DISCOVER A CURIOSITY OF CREATURES THIS SUMMER Children around the region are invited to join Isaac Libraries’ Summer Reading Club Program this December and January.

Offering another fun-filled season of reading and activities, the national Summer Reading Club program kicked off on Saturday, December 1 and is now available through local libraries and online.

Created for children and young people pre-school age to 17, the Summer Reading Club is a free program led by State Library of Queensland (SLQ).

Mayor Anne Baker said children aged four years and up can register for the program aimed at inspiring young imaginations and a love of libraries and reading.

“Curious Creatures, this summer’s theme will encourage young readers to discover new worlds as they explore and connect with a curiosity of creatures,” Mayor Baker said.

“Through a range of age-appropriate interactive activities in Isaac libraries and online, young readers will find plenty to keep their minds engaged and busy this holidays.”

Over 43,000 children registered with the Summer Reading Club in 2017, reading over 360,000 books between them over summer, and organisers are hoping participants will crack half a million books in 2018.

Summer Reading Club members can also meet 21 new Australian authors and illustrators online, read their helpful creative hints and tips and preview exclusives of their up and coming work.

Online participants will also have the opportunity to blog with children’s authors, Dr Cameron Stelzer and Emma Middleton, search for answers to Encyclopedia Britannica’s sponsored quiz, craft a What Happens Next story ending to Dave Lowe’s story starter, share their book raves and artwork, and lots more.

Summer Reading Club runs from December 1, 2018 to January 31, 2019, so be sure to check out your local library’s calendar of events or go online to www.summerreadingclub.org.au to join in the fun activities.

COUNCIL CHRISTMAS/NEW YEAR CLOSURES Council facilities All Council administrative offices, libraries and depots will be closed for the Christmas/New Year period from close of business Friday, December 21 2018, reopening Wednesday, January 2 2019.

Waste services Council’s waste management facilities will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day public holidays but will otherwise operate as normal over the festive period.

Due to public holiday closures, the Nebo waste facility will open from 7am to 12pm on Monday, December 24 and Monday, December 31.

Kerbside collection services will also operate as scheduled, even on public holidays.

PUBLIC NOTICES PARTIAL TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF CENTENARY PARK, CLERMONT - UPDATE #3 Isaac Regional Council advises that the temporary fencing to isolate the flying fox roost will remain partially closed until further notice.

This means that a pedestrian gate on the corner of Capella and Lime streets will be partially closed.

Alternative access is available since majority of the park, including the shade structure and toilets, is unaffected by this temporary closure.

The roost is away from residential backyards, in the trees on the south bank of Hoods Lagoon (corner of Capella and Lime streets).

The flying fox roost has decreased substantially in the past week however Council will continue to monitor the flying fox roost in case the number increases over the coming weeks.

Council workers had trimmed some trees in the park to try and discourage more roosting in the area last month.

Residents are reminded that it is against the law to harm or disturb a flying fox roost, and unplanned and unauthorised actions can impact on you, your neighbours and your community.

Council recommends that residents undertake proactive vegetation management at properties to prevent flying foxes from camping in their backyards.

The best way to do this is to trim or remove potential camp trees, commonly mature mango, fig, or poinciana, little red flying foxes can also camp in eucalyptus, palm and other trees.

Council thanks residents for their understanding and apologises for any inconvenience caused.

STORYTIME CHRISTMAS PARTY It will be Christmas at Storytime today as Clermont Library holds a Storytime Christmas Party.

Isaac Libraries are participating in the Summer Reading Club Program during December and January.

Summer Reading Club (SRC) is a free program that inspires a child’s imagination and instills a love of reading and libraries in children.

SRC registrations can be made online at www.summerreadingclub.org.au/theclub or at the Clermont Library. Children who register through the library will receive a pack of SRC goodies.

SPOTLIGHT ON J.A. JANCE Judy Ann (J.A.) Jance is an American author of mystery novels.

She has written three series of novels centering on retired Seattle Police Department detective, J.P. Beaumont, Arizona County Sheriff Joanna Brady, and form Los Angeles news anchor turned mystery-solver, Ali Reynolds.

Jance uses her initials as her pen name because a publisher told her that revealing her gender would be a liability for a book about a male detective.

Round Two of the RADF grants program is now open.

We’re investing in creative and cultural experiences through the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) which strengthens regional communities, boosts cultural tourism, and enhances the quality of life in rural and remote towns and cities.

RADF is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Isaac Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.

STRETCH CLASS Improve the flexibility of your joints and muscles with our stretch classes. Stretching is a vital component in any fitness regime, whether you’re a fitness newbie or a professional level athlete, it can boost the effectiveness of your workout routine.

THUMP A 1 hour boxing for fitness class, boxing equipment is provided (gloved, focus pads, kick shields, etc). Inners must be worn, these can be purchased from reception for $5 prior to beginning the session.

VIRTUAL RIP A high intensity strength conditioning class using barbell and light dumbbell weights. 45 minutes – 1 hour in duration.

VIRTUAL CYCLE CHALLENGE Revolution by group Rx is a cycling program that brings the outdoor ride – inside. Interval bases cadence training takes your classes through sprints, hill and mountains, to achieve results and personal goals.

Revolution is a 60-minute cycling program tailor-made for anyone who can ride a bike. This class is capped at 10 participants.

KANGA TRAINING Kanga training is a complete workout during which both cardiovascular endurance/flexibility and muscular capacity/strength are enhanced. Unlike traditional exercise classes, new mums need not worry about finding a babysitter or minding an unsettled baby during class because the babies are worn on them and get to be part of the action!

As well as the physical benefits, the opportunity to meet other local mums in a fun, relaxed environment boosts their emotional wellbeing.

The pelvic floor and abdominal muscles as well as correct posture are given special attention.

Kangatrainers are also trained in babywearing best practices and can help mums ensure the safest and most comfortable carrying positions for their babies.

HEALTH, FITNESS AND SPORTS NEWS GOLF NOTES Last Sunday a stableford was played.

FIGHT CLUB JIU JITSU Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art specialising in submission grappling. It is a non-striking sport that promotes fitness, self-confidence, respect, flexibility and teaches self defence strategies.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes have now started for Adults and Kids (8+). Both Gi and no-Gi classes are being offered.

GUT AND BUTT BLAST: is a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane, simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps.

This will increase fat metabolism at rest and help slim and tone those problematic areas.

Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level.

METAPWR: is a fast moving circuit, using moves that need strength, speed and power. All MetaPWR workouts use the entire body, involving your upper and lower body and core muscles.

Muscle is metabolically active tissue, so the more muscles you work the more calories you burn.

The more calories you burn, the more productive your workouts will be and the faster you will lose fat.

LET’S LIFT: this program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45 minutes whole body workout. This is achieved through the use of barbell and dumbbell weights.

This class is suitable for all fitness levels.

CIRCUIT TRAINING: this is a form of body conditioning or resistance training using high-intensity/ low-intensity aerobic energy. It targets strength building and muscular endurance.

An exercise ‘circuit’ is one completion of all prescribed exercises in the program. It is highly enjoyable and recommended to all levels of fitness.

METAFIT: this is a 30 minutes bodyweight training system that gets results! It is a functional and effective, metabolic workout that will change the way you train.

Created by a former Royal Marine Commando, Metafit combines the latest HIIT techniques with traditional ‘old school’ bodyweight exercises to set the metabolism on fire.
