HEALTHY DOSE OF CONNECTION AS ISAAC CELEBRATES SENIORS WEEK As COVID-19 regulations have seen many older people in self-isolation, never has it been more important this Queensland Seniors Week to ensure Isaac region residents remain connected. From tai chi, learning about nutrition to sharing stories and being creative through art, there’s something for all ages in Clermont, as well as Carmila, Dysart, Glenden, Middlemount, Moranbah, Nebo and St Lawrence in mid-August. Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker said the significant week is a chance for all residents to recognise the knowledge, experience and value older Isaac residents bring to the region. “I encourage all Isaac residents, regardless of their age, to take part in this year’s Queensland Seniors Week and enjoy the wonderful program of events and activities that make up this important celebration especially in these uncertain times,” she said.

BUILDING RESILIENCE AND ADAPTATION THROUGH COMMUNITY GRANTS Pure people power is set to ignite through the Isaac Community Grants program, helping to energise local communities.
“They are another example of the pure people power which drives our local communities and make the Isaac such a great place to live.”
To help the region’s social, sporting and cultural fabric through a cautionary COVID-19 period, the grants powered by Isaac Regional Council have been re-instated.
There are four categories for funding and applicants are encouraged to think about how their project, event or activity will benefit the people and community of the region, and what outcomes it will provide.
Mayor Anne Baker said building and supporting the region’s resilience is key through uncertain times.
Applicants are required to head to www.speakup. isaac.qld.gov.au and read the Isaac Community Grants Guidelines before proceeding with their application through the following categories:
“Isaac Community Grants fund local projects, events and activities that help develop resilient, adaptive and vibrant communities while it contributes to the social well-being of our residents, workers and visitors,” Mayor Baker said. “Council has reactivated this program as part of our regional vision and strategic community plan as Isaac not-for-profit and community organisations return to business-as-usual activities, all while adhering to COVID Safe practices. “Many of these organisations rely on volunteers and ongoing community support to deliver events and activities for the enjoyment of residents and visitors especially in these unprecedented times.

PUBLIC NOTICES 2019-20 WATER NOTICES SET TO ARRIVE FROM 5 AUGUST Isaac water users are urged to keep an eye on letterboxes as water notices are set to arrive from August 2020. The water notices will be issued to more than 9000 Isaac properties. The payable water notice has been issued for the period January 2020 to June 2020 which falls under the 20192020 consumption charges. Residents are encouraged to pay before 5pm on 4 September 2020. Council has worked hard to keep this as a fair system to stop lower water consumers subsidising heavy users. The below applicable remissions to be applied to water notices are as below: Reading adjustment: A reading adjustment may be displayed on a residents upcoming water notice. Reading adjustments are generally to correct an estimate from a previous billing cycle. Not-for-profit organisations during COVID-19 restrictions: Council adopted a report (Resolution number 6554) to provide the maximum relief possible to eligible not-
for-profit organisations. Organisations under the Rates Concession – Not for Profit Policy will be provided a 100 per cent concession where the organisation has not already received the full concession for the 2019-2020 financial year. Clermont 17-day water remission: Isaac Regional Council has endorsed the application of the Utility Charges Remission - Extraordinary Circumstances Policy in response to the March water discolouration event in Clermont. Residents will receive an annualised 17-day proportional rates remission for Clermont properties which receive water consumption for the period between 1 January 2020 to 30 June 2020. Users can set email and SMS alerts and be notified of water leaks and high consumption within days of occurrence. Ratepayers can sign up online at www.isaac. qld.gov.au/miwater. CLERMONT WATER QUALITY RESPONSE PLAN Council has developed a plan to outline what changes and improvements are planned for the Clermont Water Treatment Plant and network. Isaac Regional Council is committed to maintaining, renewing and expanding its water infrastructure to meet the present and future needs of the communities of the region. In partnership with government and industry, Council continues to invest significantly in this essential function as part of a focus on improving water infrastructure and service delivery. Council acknowledges the region’s communities have experienced past issues in relation to water supply, but is working hard to deliver long-term solutions, particularly in the area of drinking water quality. In 2019-20, Council is spending over $1M on maintaining and improving the region’s water infrastructure. In 20/21, over $2.5M has been approved and additional funds are also proposed to be spent specifically on projects relating to the sustainability of the Clermont water supply network. Council is committed to providing regular updates on the progress of the actions outlined in the Clermont Water Quality Response Plan. Regular updates on the progress will be made on Council’s website. Each item outlined in the Clermont Water Quality Response Plan will be updated on the website so the Clermont community can regularly keep track of the progress.
To obtain a copy of the Clermont Water Quality Response Plan, visit Council’s website to download or pick one up from the Clermont Library, Cnr Karmoo and Herschel Streets.

COMMUNITY NEWS KIDS VOICE 2020 What is KidsVoice 2020?
What are the objectives of KidsVoice 2020?
A FREE online musical community project for Isaac Kids 17 and under.
To give our kids a safe space of their own to do something creative and fun together.
The project idea was originally conceived during the Coronavirus Lockdown. It is a project created to allow kids to sing and record a song together while staying at their own homes, using just their smartphones/PCs and the internet, to be released worldwide on social media sites. Modern mixing technologies now allow us to collaborate across long distance, transcending physical locations.
To help our kids connect and give them a sense of community.
While the project is aimed at kids 17 and under, the entire family can get involved as all the materials are supplied and family members can each learn a part and sing along the backtrack at home! Who is behind KidsVoice 2020? The project had been started by Kwan Chan with collaborations with Clermont Artslink, DownUnder Brothers, Dysart Arts Inc. and Moranbah Art Council. The main organisers are Dean Pearce, Jasmine Pearce and Kwan Chan, all passionate local artists (read more about them in our bio section on our website), with lots of help from our families and friends!
To give our kids a chance to push their own limitations and in the process empowering themselves in their artistic, self-expressive, and social aspects and to boost their confidence in themselves. To continue our community projects and help keep our community spirit high despite the looming pandemic risks and restrictions. To give families opportunities to participate fun activities together at home, especially with social distancing. To create beautiful memories, TOGETHER! For more information, visit: www.kidsvoice2020.com
LAGOONA RECEIVES UPGRADE Lagoona, one of Clermont’s vital community services will receive an upgrade of almost $180,000, thanks to funding provided by Glencore. Lagoona is operated by Clermont Community Housing and Other Services Inc (CCHAOSI), a not-for-profit support agency that provides a range of services and emergency relief to people in need. CCHAOSI representative, Barbara Stranks, said the facility will now be able to offer the privacy required to assist those seeking help. “This renovation project will transform the building by creating functional, private spaces where people can feel comfortable to share their story and receive the support they need,” Barbara said. The renovation will include a new office space and meeting room in an underused patio area, internal doorways to link new areas to existing offices and a fresh coat of paint to the exterior of the building. Areas used by CCHAOSI will also be repainted internally and will receive new floor coverings. “Thanks to Glencore’s contributions, the Clermont community will be able to access support in a safer and more secure environment for many years to come,” Barbara said. Environment and Community Manager at Glencore’s Clermont operation, Morne van Zyl, said they were proud to support CCHAOSI with a project that would deliver long-term benefits. “We aim to provide positive and lasting benefits in the communities near our operations, and are delighted to fund this renovation project,” Morne said. Renovations will begin in August, starting with the transformation of the front patio area, and continue through to October. Lagoona will continue to operate during this time.
CLERMONT HISTORICAL CENTRE REMEMBER THE TOWN BAND? The Clermont Town Band was formed after a public meeting was held in the Belyando Shire Office, Clermont in May 1940. Councillor F F Mills chaired the meeting and those attending the meeting were in favour of forming a town band. However, a few attendees were concerned about the impact the proposed town band would have on the community’s Boys’ Band. The formation of a town band would enable members to the Boys’ Band to join the town band after leaving school. It was agreed at the meeting that a town band would be formed. A Town Band committee was formed with committee members being Messrs Birchall, Neilson, Hauenschild, Larcombe, Barnes, Haines and Slade. Mr A Haines was elected acting bandmaster. The Peak Downs Brass Band was a predecessor to the Clermont Town Band and formed in the 1890s. The Peak Downs Brass Band members were very devoted to their music, practising for about six hours a week and playing in the street every fortnight. A town band also existed in Clermont from about 1912 to 1916. A United Boys’ Club Orchestra had been
ON THIS DAY ... 40 YEARS AGO A Cairns-based company was granted an authority to prospect for coal in the Wolfang area near Clermont. In announcing the grant of authority to White Industries, the then Member for Peak Downs, Vince Lester, said the area covered 194 square miles with an authority for three years. Tenders from 12 other companies were received for the Wolfang project. Mr Lester said the Wolfang area had reserves of about 200 million tonnes of steaming coal. He said if the exploration and feasibility study showed satisfactory results, the company could establish a mining operation before the three-year authority to prospect period finished. In 1981, White Industries wrote a report on investigating relocation of arterial roads in the Wolfang area. Fast forward to 2007 – Construction of the Clermont Open Cut mine and associated infrastructure starts in the Wolfang area about 12 kilometres from Clermont A section of the Peak Downs Highway (the Mackay Road) was relocated around the Clermont Open Cut Mine site. SPORTS NEWS CLERMONT BEARS UPDATE Welcome to a very overdue Clermont Bears update. If you haven’t heard the news, the Central Highlands and clubs decided not to proceed with the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 restrictions, and the uncertainty of future restrictions. It is with great sadness that unfortunately our 2020 Bears are #backinhibernation until 2021. While this was very sad, it paled in comparison to what came next. For those of you who have met our 2020 coach, Tony Wilkinson, you know what a personality he is and how lucky we are to have someone with the passion and knowledge, not just for rugby league but for small communities. Wilko is a Longreach lad, so knows only too well how important sporting clubs are to the social fabric of a community. He has recently been dealt a difficult hand and diagnosed with colon cancer. Wilko is taking it in his stride and facing each treatment with courage and optimism. We are right beside him, offering him all the encouragement and support we can. The Bears have always backed one another – in good times and bad – it’s what we do. So, to support Wilko and his family through his treatment, we will be hosting a number of fundraising activities. We sincerely hope that we can help them cross financial concerns off the list of things to worry about during this time. The Central Queensland Capras have set up a GoFundMe page for Tony. If you would like to donate, please visit: www.gf.me/u/yiy3ts or visit our Facebook page: @ClermontBears. Locally, we will be selling tickets in a $10,000 board; we will be hosting a sportsman’s dinner with some Queensland Origin legends, a huge memorabilia auction and a monster raffle to draw on the night. Save your pennies, Clermont; this will be a night to remember! And most importantly, we will be digging deep to help our mate, like we always do. Save the date for 14 November and prepare yourself for some fun, frivolity, and most importantly, lots of fundraising!
