EMERGENCY FUNDS AWARDED TO COMMUNITY GROUPS Isaac Regional Council has approved almost $10,000 in financial relief for local community groups under the Special Emergency Community Grants as part of Council’s Road to COVID-19 Recovery Stimulus Packages, with more to follow in the near future. Mayor Anne Baker said four organisations in Clermont, Glenden, Moranbah and Nebo would share in grant assistance totalling $9,360 to help them during the COVID-19 pandemic and encouraged more community groups to apply. “Local sporting and recreational groups, not-for-profit organisations and cultural groups who are doing it tough are encouraged to apply and can receive up to $5,000 under the grant,” Mayor Baker said. “With the introduction of social distancing rules and limitations on gatherings, it has meant the ability to fundraise and secure sponsorship opportunities has been completely cut-off for many groups.

BOWEN BASIN COMMUNITIES TO BENEFIT FROM ALMOST $120,000 IN DEVELOPMENT FUNDING The Clermont, Nebo, Glenden and Collinsville communities a re set to benefit from a regional development initiative worth almost $120,000. Thanks to funding from Glencore, the Regional Social Development Coalition (RSDC) will mentor local community groups that struggle to maintain volunteers, governance and funding. Karen May, President of RSDC, said there was a growing need to support the members and volunteers of communityg roups in the region as well as to help identify the next generation of local leaders. “Many regional community groups struggle to attract and maintain membership which can put their committees at risk of burnout and make it challenging to manage projects and finances for the long-term,” Karen said. “What we aim to do is provide practical support through management training, leadership workshops and communityforumsso these groups can continue to deliver their services to local people, now and into the future.” Glencore’s Communi1ty Relations Manager, Craig Strudwick, said the project would provide an important connection between local needs and state-wide or national initiatives that can help to address them.

“We believe that locally based and locally managed organisations know their communities best,” Craig said. “That’s why GIencore is delighted to assist the people of Clermont, Nebo, Glenden and Collinsville to gain a greater opportunity in planning, developing and controlling their own community services.” As a part of Glencore’s funding, RSDC has appointed Ashton Ball as the Clermont Project Worker. Ashton will work alongside Senior RSDC Coordinator, Dome Wallace, to support community organisations to reach their full potential. CLERMONT4DOCTORS PROJECT Contributed by Sandy Frost, Project Coordinator Clermont4Doctors

Late last year a small group of people met to discuss a topic that has been of concern for many years - a lack of consistency of Doctors in Clermont. Community frustrations were high and people were travelling long distances for the most basic of medical care. A working party was established which was a diverse group of individuals motivated to find a collaborative solution to this problem. This group are the original Clermont4Doctors Community Champions. Together with BENI (Belyando Enterprise Network Inc) and funded by Glencore, the Clermont4Doctors project was born. The focus of Clermont4Doctors is to offer Doctors coming to Clermont more than just a place to work, but a place call home. The best thing about living and working in a rural town is the community, and one of the main aims of the committee is to make sure new Doctors get to experience that. By offering authentic community connection and other incentives Doctors are encouraged to become residents of Clermont. Sandy Frost has been appointed as the Project Coordinator, who will be the day-to-day contact for the Clermont4Doctors Project. In April, the official Clermont4Doctors committee held its inaugural meeting and is proud to announce that the project is almost ready to launch. Clermont4Doctors is looking for community minded individuals who would be willing to join a team of Champions. Keep an eye out for activities and news of the launch over the next month. The role of a ‘Community Champion’ involves supporting new Doctors and their families to encourage them all to feel part of this wonderful community. It may be inviting them for a coffee at your home or one of the local coffee shops; it may be an invitation to go for a drive to Theresa Creek Dam, climb Wolfang Peak or Tabletop or to view sorghum being harvested; it may be an invitation for a game of golf or tennis or to attend the races or the rugby. If you want to be involved, and are as proud of this town we call home as we are, call Sandy Frost on 0408 355 055. This project is funded by Belyando Enterprise Network Inc. and Glencore.

COUNCILLOR JONES’ COLUMN Hope everyone is well and still abiding by the COVID-19 restrictions. Things are looking a little better with travel throughout Queensland now allowed. However we still must abide with existing restrictions. Actually can’t wait to see my kids in Toowoomba but it will as always depend on Council commitments. Has been a long time since Christmas which was when I last saw them. Marg and I had lunch at Penny’s the other day. How nice to be able to go and sit in a public place and enjoy lunch. Distancing applied and all we had to do was sign our name and fill in a few details. Progress forward. Looks like it is time for us to get serious about Axel’s ever expanding waistline. The vet has told me he must lose 5kg by his next visit. This could be the end to his crumbed steak and gravy takeaway once a week. However, if this is what is needed to keep him healthy then I guess it will be done. After nearly 20 years of service with Council, Sue has published her final issue of Clermont Rag with the publication set to continue with a new custodian for the rag to be appointed in the future. She will be greatly missed and her local knowledge will be hard to replace.

I know there had been a fair amount of discussion around the reseal of parts of Tropic Street and the roundabout. This area of road comes under the jurisdiction of Main Roads and the when and how it is done is up to them. I had several queries about the edges of the road as to if they were safe as there was a reasonable drop. I am asking Council it there is anything we can do about it and will get back to you when I have an answer. I have included a photo of Axel taking a leisurely dip at the lagoon (complying with social distancing of course). That’s it for this fortnight. Until next time … Lyn
