ISAAC’S FIRST COMPUTER CHOIR HIT HIGH NOTES ON VIDEO Four weeks of tuning vocal chords across the Isaac Region has reached a crescendo in a video of the region’s first computer choir giving voice to pure people power.

The joint project between the Isaac Regional Council and the Cheep Trill Music School brought together 50 would-be choristers for an online, interactive community experience.

This culminated in recording a four-minute video of a song by acclaimed singer-songwriter Emma Dean, “Bigger Than You, Bigger Than Me”, especially arranged for the choir.

Mayor Anne Baker said she was thrilled by the enthusiasm and community spirit shown by the choir members, who represented the pure people power the Isaac Region was noted for.

“The choir was part of Council’s COVID-19 Community Support and Wellbeing Package, developing shared virtual experiences to maintain and strengthen community spirit during uncertain times,” Mayor Baker said.

“There is so much fun and enthusiasm in this video you can’t help smiling and humming along.”

Isaac Computer Choir is funded by the Regional Arts Development Fund which is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Isaac Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.

Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch said the Palaszczuk Government was proud to continue its RADF partnership with local governments with an investment of $2.08 million, through Arts Queensland, for the 2019-20 fund.

“This investment will support the delivery of hundreds of arts experiences and professional development opportunities across the state,” Ms Enoch said.

“Projects funded through RADF provide pathways for learning, contribute to the creation of jobs, foster creativity and boost cultural tourism.”

ALOE CLERMONT GARDENERS! PUT SPRING IN YOUR STEP WITH DIG IT, ISAAC! Residents in the Isaac region who love gardening from their head tomatoes will have the chance to share in $3700 in prizes.

Dig It Isaac is a fresh and ground-breaking competition to unite green thumbs across Isaac as well as supporting local business.

“Entries will be accepted for Best Overall Garden, Edible Garden, Drought-Resistant Garden, Grown from Seeds Garden, Potted Garden and School, Kindy or Day Care Garden.

Isaac Regional Council in partnership with generous local businesses have planted the seeds to encourage residents to get back to basics by starting a new garden or completing a project that’s been sitting on the to-do list.

Mayor Anne Baker said this is the competition for those who absolutely love their time in their yard and there is a Dig It Isaac! Category for all budgets and abilities.

“Let’s put spring in Isaac’s step and take advantage of our incredible weather this time of year,” Mayor Baker said.

“Dig It Isaac! is all about getting back to nature, in your own backyard. Winners will share in $3700 worth of Shop Isaac gift cards with the major prize winner walking away with $1000 to spend at Isaac businesses.

“A huge shout out to our local sponsors for supporting this community initiative. We’re hoping to grow this competition every Spring.”

YOUTH ENCOURAGED TO SHARE THEIR STORIES OF ISAAC LIFE A unique chance for young people to amplify their stories about their life in the Isaac region is being offered through the national broadcaster.

Participants will be sent a link to join the online workshop - you must have internet capabilities, and a microphone and camera is preferable for full interaction.

Heywire is an opportunity for young rural Australians to have their voices heard, and share what life is like in their part of the world with the rest of the nation.

This annual storytelling competition, run by the ABC, showcases what it’s like to live in regional, rural and remote Australia.

Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker said the creative pure people power of the region’s youth is undeniable.

“It’s not always easy to write a story about ourselves.

Sometimes we don’t know what we want to talk about, or we don’t know how to start,” she said.

“Because of this, we want to offer the youth of Isaac the opportunity to develop skills in an online Heywire storytelling workshop, where an ABC producer takes you through the storytelling process, from helping you find your own unique story to then getting your thoughts and ideas on paper.

“The workshop also includes videos of true stories from past Heywire winners, and plenty of opportunity for discussion and to ask questions.”

The free online workshop on Monday 7 September at 4pm is open to Isaac residents aged 16-22 years old, who are encouraged to register via www.speakup.isaac.qld.gov.au and follow the prompts.

ABC Director of Regional & Local, Judith Whelan said Heywire is an important platform for young people living outside of the big cities to have their voices heard. “We’re proud to celebrate the stories of a new generation of Australian storytellers,” Ms Whelan said.

Heywire is a chance for young people to have their story told on ABC platforms including ABC TV, Radio National, Local Radio, triple j and iview. Entries are open now and close on 16 September 2020 via www.abc.net.au/heywire/competition/. Heywire acknowledges the support of the Australian Government through the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment; the Department of Education, Skills and Employment; the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications; the Department of Health; the Department of Social Services; and AgriFutures Australia.

PUBLIC NOTICES POOLS RE-OPEN FROM MONDAY 7 SEPTEMBER 2020 WITH COVID SAFE PLAN Isaac Regional Council wishes to advise that its eight aquatic facilities will re-open from Monday 7 September 2020 with an industry COVID Safe Plan.

The pools have been closed in the Isaac region since 23 March under a State Government coronavirus directive.

PUBLIC NOTICES WATER RESTRICTIONS ADVISORY - LEVEL 2, CLERMONT, EFFECTIVE FROM 14 SEPTEMBER 2020 Isaac Regional Council advises Clermont residents that Level 2 water restrictions will come into effect from Monday, 14 September 2020. Projections indicate that the water level will be between 1.25m to 1.5m below the spillway height of Theresa Creek Dam, which supplies the local water treatment plant, on this date. This is the trigger for Level 2 water restrictions.

Residents will be notified through Council’s website, Facebook page, next edition of the Clermont Rag and a letterbox drop to reaffirm these restrictions. We encourage residents to share this important message with their families, friends, workmates and neighbours.

Applications for an exemption must describe use and volumes required. Exemption approval will be based on social, health, environmental or economic considerations. Standpipes will not be accessible without an exemption from Monday, 14 September 2020. An application for exemption for mobile water tankers in water restrictions is available for download at Council’s website.

CLERMONT WATER QUALITY RESPONSE PLAN Isaac Regional Council would like to advise the Clermont community of the Clermont Water Quality Response Plan.

Council has committed to providing the community with regular updates on their website and will provide engagement opportunities for feedback.

The Clermont Water Quality Response Plan outlines the upcoming changes and improvements to the Clermont Water Treatment Plant and network.

A printed copy of the current Clermont Water Quality Response Plan will soon be arriving in letterboxes.

PUBLIC NOTICES CONSTRUCTION OF CYCLE TRACK AND FOOTPATH CAPRICORN STREET, CLERMONT Isaac Regional Council advises Clermont residents of upcoming works to construct a cycle track and footpath on Capricorn Street as part of Isaac Regional Council’s capital works program.

Works will be carried out by contractor Durack Civil Pty Ltd and will occur on Capricorn Street, from the Sirius Street intersection to the Kitchener Street intersection between Thursday 3 September and Wednesday 30 September 2020, weather permitting.

DOG REGISTRATION RENEWAL NOTICES WITH NEW INCENTIVES AVAILABLE Isaac Regional Council is launching new incentives thanks to the Paws-itive Blueprint for Responsible Dog Ownership.

For the first time in the Isaac region and to encourage responsible dog ownership, there will be free puppy registrations for pups who microchipped and aged less than 12 months are and it doesn’t stop there.

If you are paying your dog registration renewal before 11 September, you qualify for our early bird discount of 50 per cent.

Council is also now offering the following for registered and responsible dog owners: Paws-Itive Blueprint for Responsible Dog Ownership Free registration for pensioners who hold concession cards and own a desexed and microchipped dog.

50 per cent discount to anyone aged 65 or over who owns a desexed and microchipped dog.

In recognition of your responsible dog ownership, desexed and microchipped canines are no more than $20 for owners who have registered their pooches after 11 September!

For those registering for the first time, whether they’ve forgotten or moved to Isaac; you’ll qualify for pro rata registration discounts no matter what time of year you register.

Registration fees help to fund essential services for animal management including our pounds. The great thing about registering is that if Council picks up your dog, rangers return them for free for the first time.

Ain’t nothing but a pound dog if it’s unregistered – owners will be up for an impoundment fee and registration fee before they’re released home. Register, microchip and make sure your yard is secure and safe.

Reciprocal Free Dog Registration up to 12 months if the dog has an active registration in another local government area.

COMMUNITY NEWS CLERMONT JUNIOR MOTOR CROSS CLUB HOUSE REFURBISHMENT Like the thrilling art of motor cross, ups and downs are part of everyday life.

2020 so far has been such a challenging time for all sporting clubs and organisations with the uncertainty around the when and how to operate within the confines of COVID -19. The upside has been the opportunity for clubs and organisations to do some much-needed maintenance to their facilities in the absence of participants.

The Queensland Corrective Services work camp prisoners have done an amazing job completing a refurbishment to the Clermont Junior Motor Cross club house. Prisoners stripped back and repainted the entire building, patching up the timber fascia and making repairs, sanded and re-painting the aluminium shutters giving this valuable facility a fresh new lease of life. Now as the participants return to their beloved sport, they will be met with a new fresh space in which they can enjoy.

MEALS ON WHEELS CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS Clermont Meals on Wheels delivers meals to those who need it, either on a permanent or temporary basis, to assist them to remain in their own homes. The committee is calling for volunteers to fill a few vacancies in our delivery team.

The role entails delivering midday meals prepared and packed at the hospital to clients around the town who are in need of this assistance. A car is provided.

Meals are delivered on week days only and each round takes about an hour to an hour and a half. Each volunteer is rostered on only one day a month and they usually work in pairs. Substitutes are available if something crops up and you are unable to do your rostered delivery.

ST MARY’S CHRISTMAS FAIR 2020 CANCELLED A huge thank you to the Clermont community for the incredible support over the years for the St Mary’s Christmas fair. It is always a fun family night.

This year, due to the strict guidelines of COVID-19, it is necessary to cancel the 2020 Christmas fair. Instead, we will be doing a few other fund raising activities and thank the community and businesses of Clermont for your continued support.

Queensland Corrective Services prides itself on being able to provide a labour source to the clubs and organisations of the communities in which they live. The work camp initiative is important in offering low-security inmates the opportunity to make reparation to the community harmed by offending behaviours, whilst developing skills that will increase employment opportunities upon their release.

CLERMONT HISTORICAL CENTRE WHO WAS DUNCAN HALL? Duncan Hall was the boy from Blair Athol who became one of Australia’s greatest post-war rugby league footballers. Born in 1925 as Douglas Hockins, he grew up with the Duncan family in Blair Athol and to honour the Duncans, Douglas changed his name to Duncan.

After his mother, Nell married Bill Hall, he adopted his stepfather’s surname and became known as Duncan Hall.

Hall started his rugby league career in Rockhampton, and it was while he was a senior player for the Rockhampton Brothers that his skills were thought to be exceptional. Many believed he could become a rugby league star player. This was in 1944 and Hall later moved to Brisbane to further his rugby league career. He played for Brisbane Valleys, Newtown in Toowoomba, Home Hill and finished his playing career with Wests in Brisbane in 1957. Amazingly, every club that Hall played for qualified for the finals.

Hall also had a successful career as a Queensland and Australian representative, playing 24 matches for Queensland, 22 tests for Australia and going on two Kangaroo tours. Hall unexpectantly captained the Kangaroos while touring France in 1953, thanks to a toe injury that stopped team captain, Clive Churchill, from playing.

Duncan Hall Jnr, followed in his father’s footsteps of being an elite sportsman, representing both Queensland and Australia in rugby union. Duncan Hall Jnr donned a Wallaby jersey and played 15 tests for Australia during a four-year international career.

Sadly, Hall died at the age of 85 in 2011 but this boy from Blair Athol gained a legacy of achievements, awards and fame in rugby league during his lifetime.

A STEP BACK IN TIME... 95 YEARS AGO On 5 September 1925 there was a food shortage due to the railway strike.

Grocery shelves were empty and stores were low on stock but not because of panic buying and people having to isolate because of an outbreak of disease.

In early September, 1925, trains stopped running throughout Queensland and the entire state was at the mercy of striking railway workers. About 18,000 railway employees were on strike and had demanded an increase of the basic wage from £4 to £4/5/-

Clermont, like many country towns, was reliant on trains to bring in food supplies and other stock for the town’s businesses. Properties also used the trains to take their livestock to markets or meatworks. When the trains stopped running, stores quickly sold out flour, sugar, Hall was awarded an Australian Sports Medal in 2000 and was inducted into the Australian Rugby League Hall butter and other produce. One local baker had enough flour to last a week while a couple of other bakers of Fame in 2006. The Duncan expected they would have no flour left at the end of the Hall Medal, which Queensland week. Emerald and Blair Athol were in a similar situation.

Rugby League introduced in 2007, is awarded to the best and Banchory Station near Clermont, trucked cattle to the fairest player in the Queensland railway yards on the day the strike began and the cattle Cup. had to be trucked back to Banchory.

Isaac Libraries now offer Freegal Music to patrons.

Freegal Music is a free music service offering access to about 15 million songs and over 40,000 music videos.

All Isaac Libraries now offer free Wi-Fi to visitors. You can access up to 500MB of data per day via your smartphone, tablet or laptop. It’s great for browsing and downloading some of our fantastic online resources.

Patrons can access Freegal Music through the Libraries, Arts and Cultural Services link at Isaac Regional Council’s website or download the Freegal app on to a device.

Just search for the IRC Libraries network in your settings and follow the prompts to register and log-in.

It’s available inside and outside the library so you can maintain social distancing.

You will need your library membership number and Libero password to access Freegal. You have 24 hours 7 days a week of free music streaming and you can download three titles to keep per week.

MOVIES ONLINE WITH KANOPY Kanopy can bring the cinema to you in the comfort of your lounge. Kanopy is an on-demand streaming video platform for public libraries that offers viewers a large collection of award-winning films and documentaries.

There are collections on Australian films, popular films, foreign films, documentaries. Kanopy for Kids has many popular children’s TV shows and films.

To access Kanopy, you will need to download the Kanopy app on your device and be an Isaac Libraries member to create an account. You will then be able to download 10 films/documentaries each month, but each download has a time limit for viewing.

E-RESOURCES An Isaac Libraries membership allows you to borrow out not just books, DVDs and audiobooks on CD, but also e-books and digital audiobooks. Library membership also gives you access to e-resources, digital magazines, movies and music online.

You don’t even need to visit a library to sign-up.

CLERMONT WATER QUALITY RESPONSE PLAN Council has developed a plan to outline what changes and improvements are planned for the Clermont Water Treatment Plant and network.

Isaac Regional Council is committed to maintaining, renewing and expanding its water infrastructure to meet the present and future needs of the communities of the region.

In partnership with government and industry, Council continues to invest significantly in this essential function as part of a focus on improving water infrastructure and service delivery.

Council acknowledges the region’s communities have experienced past issues in relation to water supply, but is working hard to deliver long-term solutions, particularly in the area of drinking water quality.

In 2019-20, Council is spending over $1M on maintaining and improving the region’s water infrastructure. In 20/21, over $2.5M has been approved and additional funds are also proposed to be spent specifically on projects relating to the sustainability of the Clermont water supply network.

Council is committed to providing regular updates on the progress of the actions outlined in the Clermont Water Quality Response Plan. Regular updates on the progress will be made on Council’s website.

Each item outlined in the Clermont Water Quality Response Plan will be updated on the website so the Clermont community can regularly keep track of the progress.
