The Clermont Show Committee recently hosted the judging and announcement of the 2018 Clermont Miss Showgirl and 2018 Clermont Show Rural Ambassador. A huge congratulations goes to Miss Melissa Robertson (Moranbah) who was announced as the 2018 Miss Showgirl. Miss Courtney Eckhardt was sashed Junior Miss Showgirl, Miss Katie Fearnley (Moranbah) Junior Miss Showgirl runner-up, Mini Miss Showgirl Libby Cook (Clermont). Thank you to all our other entrants who were fabulous in their roles. Hannah Coghill Junior Showgirl Entrant and Miss Mini Showgirl Entrant Nari Smith. Mr James Pisaturo (Middlemount) was announced the 2018 Clermont Show Rural Ambassador, Mr Joshua Lysaght White (Clermont) Junior Rural Ambassador and Miss Anna Cook (Clermont) named Mini Rural Ambassador. The Judges were impressed with the high quality of entrants and commended the entrants on their passion for the show movement. Forty-five people attended the relaxed long lunch at the Clermont Showgrounds Heritage Building overlooking the lush Showgrounds. Sealing works Clermont-Alpha Road The Department of Transport and Main Roads advises motorists that roadworks will be undertaken to pave and seal sections of the ClermontAlpha Road. As part of the project almost 17km of road will be upgraded from about 40km to 60km north of Alpha. Works will be completed progressively from mid-March 2018 to mid-2019, weather permitting. Hours of work are expected to include Monday – Saturday, 6am to 6pm. Motorists are advised that side tracks will be in place as part of this project and are reminded to drive carefully through the roadworks zone, be aware of changed traffic conditions (including speed restrictions) and follow the direction of traffic control on site. Be part of our special storytime session featuring this year’s picture book Hickory Dickory Dash written by Tony Wilson and illustrated by Laura Wood. Before the clock infamously strikes one, a poor mother mouse must search the house for her two missing sons. But she’d better watch out for the cat! The event aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children’s book that explores age-appropriate themes. ICONIC SHOW IS ONE OF QUEENSLAND’S OLDEST contributed by Jan Burnett on behalf of the Clermont Show Society
Over the years much discussion and debate has occurred in various parts of the state over Queensland’s oldest show. 2018 being 150 years since the first ‘Clermont Exhibition’, committee members and helpers have been researching this and other show related topics for the past few months. As far as we are able to determine, it seems the first show in Queensland was held at Toowoomba with the Darling Downs Royal Agricultural Society being formed in 1860. In Central Queensland, the Queensland Pastoral Society(QPS) was formed at a meeting at Cardbeign Station, Springsure on January 5, 1865, with President, William Archer of Gracemere, Vice-President, Peter McIntosh of Wealwandangie and Honorary Secretary, Jesse Gregson of Rainworth. The objective of the society was “The Improvement of Livestock and the awarding of Prizes for the same”. The society’s first exhibition, held at Springsure in the Leichhardt District on June 21, 1865, awarded prizes for ‘Imported Stock’ (horses, cattle and sheep) and ‘Colonial Bred Stock’ (horses, cattle and sheep). A reportedly large attendance of interested spectators viewed “Remarkably good quality stock.” (Rockhampton Bulletin and CQ Advertiser, 4 July 1865, p 4).
In 1867, it was resolved that the Queensland Pastoral Society extend its operation with shows to Clermont, Banana and other outlying districts, providing there were at least twenty local subscribers and they satisfied the requirements of the Springsure Central Committee of the time. William Thomas Young Burnett of Peak Downs Station and Henri de Satgé of Gordon Downs Station (and later Wolfang Station) were the representatives of the Peak Downs district. In August, interested gentlemen in the Clermont area met and were confident of success, should it be agreed that an exhibition be held. Already there were sixty local members of the QPS. By May 1868, the decision had been made to hold Branch Exhibitions of the QPS in Clermont, Banana and Tambo. On the June 3, Clermont’s first show, an exhibition of Colonial Bred and Imported Stock, (horses, cattle sheep) was held in the grounds of the Hibernian Hotel, near the Racecourse on the old Copperfield Road. Although Clermont is not the oldest Show in Queensland, it is certainly one of the oldest, and it is definitely one of the best! Along with horse racing and cricket, shows are one of the oldest continuous events in post-colonial Australian Society and are still popular local community events. In 1822 Hobart hosted Australia’s first show.
PUBLIC NOTICES 1080 WILD DOG AND FERAL PIG BAITING PROGRAM 2018 Isaac Regional Council would like to advise all graziers that a second round of baiting will be conducted during the period below to provide landholders with an opportunity to undertake further control of wild dog and feral pig populations. Currently this baiting period is scheduled for the dates below:
Monday August 27 to Friday September 21 Manufactured baits are available outside of these times, orders must be made in advance and delivery is approximately three weeks from order date. Manufactured baits are supplied ‘at cost’ and are available for purchase through Council. FREE GREEN MULCH TRIAL CLERMONT WASTE MANAGEMENT FACILITY Isaac Regional Council advises that residents will be able to access free green waste mulch for their gardens from the Clermont Waste Management Facility on:
The last Sunday of each month starting from Sunday April 29 between 9am to 1pm Residents will be entitled to two cubic metres of free mulch until 30 June 2018 or until the stockpiles are exhausted. The trial will assist in reducing the amount of waste going to landfill through the recycling of green waste as quality mulch. The use of mulch as a conservation tool to reduce evaporation and to hamper underlying weed growth is widely accepted. For safety purposes, the mulch will need to be loaded by a Council-operated loader and not manually by hand, so customers will require a suitable utility or trailer for collection. Any children or animals accompanying a customer collecting mulch must remain within the vehicle at all times. It is also a requirement that the load be fully secured and covered by a tarpaulin or similar before departing the site. Customers will have to show they have a suitable cover before loading commences. Customers wishing to collect free mulch will be required to accept the full terms and conditions of the green mulch trial at the Waste Management Facility Gatehouse prior to the commencement of the loading process.

CR LYN’S COLUMN “Anzac Day” and once again the township and its surrounds displayed their heartfelt gratitude to those who have fallen and those who are still in service in Army, Navy and Air Force. The crowds for the Dawn Service and the 9.30am service far exceeded those of last year. Talk about make a person feel proud to be an Australian and a Clermont resident! This year was the first year I have not had Uncle Theo there and I admit to it being a bit of struggle to get through my speech at times. This tradition will live on while we have the younger generation feeling the passion that was there on the day. Also, could I please say a big thank you to all involved in making Anzac way look absolutely magnificent on the morning. I had so many people comment and say how wonderful not just Anzac Walk looked, but the well maintained look of that whole area. What a credit to our Council. The Clermont Rodeo also hit town the other weekend. A fantastic success by all accounts and I still have the dog seat at the front of my office. This is a bit of a bonus as the last one went walkabout the same time last year.
It might help that Straw welded this one’s chain around his neck, secured the chain to a post and stuck his feet to the concrete with liquid nails. Not sure what I will do when I am no longer at the office but I am sure we will think of something. Axel has been getting rather a lot of compliments about his behaviour when we are out and about walking. I must admit, he can be a very good dog when he wants to be and a right pain when he feels like it. Oh well that comes with the responsibility of owning a dog. This could be a timely reminder for people to make sure that they have their dogs registered with Council just in case they do stray. Axel is registered with Council, micro chipped at the vets and he has his name and phone number on a tag attached to his collar. Not taking any chances with him. Until next fortnight........ Lyn

CLERMONT SHOW 150 - HIBERNNIAN TO THE HILL CONTRIBUTED BY JAN AND JOHN BURNETT Have you heard? This year’s show is extra special, be sure that you are here, The CLERMONT SHOW IN ISAAC celebrates its 150th year. Three days of show, fat cattle, chooks, pavilion, all to fill, Wood chops, sideshow alley and fireworks for a thrill! The first one, we are told was near the old Hibernian Pub, A hotel on the Gemfields road, near the present Racecourse hub, About halfway to Copperfield, this started a tradition, Animals were the focus; it was called an ‘Exhibition’. Sheep, cattle and horses were judged, colonial and imported, “Exhibits were quite pleasing”, or so it was reported! Pastoralists made huge efforts and drove their stock around, Leichhardt, Cotherstone, Wolfgang, Huntly and Peak Downs Were amongst the winners on that day, The first show in Clermont town. The weather was inclement, on that historic day, Rain came down in torrents and kept the Copperfield crew away, While at the Prince of Wales Hotel, according to “the blurb”, Guests found the room “gaily decorated” and the meal “Quite superb”! The very best that could be served in this part of the world. Well, ‘Dinners’ haven’t changed much in our town over time, Still a great night had by all, just too much beer and wine!! Increased numbers please us now, and our ladies may attend, But “Oratorical effort” and “enthusiasm” are with us to the end. A second ‘Clermont Exhibition’ was held in ‘69, At the ‘Halfway House’ on old Copperfield Road, so that’s changed over time. We wonder, is this the same venue as the previous Clermont Show? It seems so, but we’re uncertain, perhaps we’ll never know. The Show was “well attended”, but exhibits seemed in doubt, Was it the drought, or “apathy” that brought this result about? Maybe we work together, and have races this week too, Perhaps “alternate with Springsure” was suggested by a few. Then seasons changed miraculously, five good ones in a row, But it was so disappointing, still no Clermont Show. And then, at last another show was held in 1875, A new group took up the challenge, with the suggestions kept alive:
For two days of ‘Exhibition’, the Pound Yards were the venue, Add two days of country racing, and ‘Show Week’ was on the menu. The schedule was prolific, thirty-eight classes, quite a feat, The committee had decided Clermont Show would not be beat! Maize, potatoes, poultry, oats, dogs, all joined the local stocks, Pig and horses, ewes and rams, and a pen of ‘three fat bullocks’. Scroll down through the years now, to 1953, When Bill Faint won the ‘Deedle Hunt’, whatever that may be! For Gymkhana, Campdraft, Rodeo, now they were all the go, Let’s put them all together with the mighty Clermont Show. More volunteers were needed, no room for class or deity, The answer was to form the Clermont Rodeo and Show Society. And through the years so many folk have lent a helping hand, Some 40 made Life Members, for commitment oh so grand! New Showgrounds built near Sandy Creek, and they would be there still, But floods throughout the 70s, so we built on Wattle Hill! Challenges abound throughout those 150 years, Droughts and floods, the Depression, wars: it’s hard to hold back tears, Committees battled on, success could not be denied, Perseverance, dedication, resilience - they kept the dream alive. Quality follows competition, that was their main resolve, Over years improved cattle and crops, the show helped them to evolve. The land has been developed by the pioneers from the ‘Peak Downs’, And now we all enjoy the Show, thanks to those who settled our town. Our forebears laid the platform. Clermont, stand proud among the best, But now, it’s up to us to ensure the Show’s success. What have YOU done this year to ensure this show is great? Come on Clermont! Get organised Isaac! The show will soon be here, mate! Take a moment, spare a thought, and spend just a little time, Bake a cake, find a flower, or just pick a pumpkin or lime, Support your local committee and our Show that we hold so dear, Remember all who forged the path, and celebrate our 150th year!

IT’S SHOWTIME
The Clermont Show will be held from Monday, May 28 to Wednesday, May 30. This year is the 150th anniversary of the Clermont Show. The Arts and Craft Pavilion is always an attraction at the Show, featuring the talents of many artists, sewers, photographers, gardeners and schoolchildren from across the Isaac Region. If you are looking for some inspiration for Pavilion entries, whether it is a biscuit recipe or photography tips, come and browse through the craft, cookery and photography books at the Clermont Library.
SPOTLIGHT ON AUTHOR Neil Gaiman was born in the United Kingdom but now lives in America. Gaiman began his writing career in England, working as a journalist. He is credited with being one of the creators of modern graphic novels and is well-known for writing sciencefiction and fantasy that appeals to readers of all ages.

BABY BOUNCE, STORYTIME, CRAFT AND RHYMETIME The Clermont Library runs several weekly children’s sessions. They are a good way to connect with other parents with young children. RHYMETIME AND CRAFT This is held from 9.30am to 10am every Tuesday for children up to five years old, where they can sing and dance to nursery rhyme songs. BABY BOUNCE Come along on Thursday from 9.30am to 10am, Baby Bounce is aimed at children aged up to two years. Baby Bounce is a chance for parents to interact with their child through movement, music and song.
BOUNCE INTO LANGEROO Langeroo is a new e-resource available through the Isaac Libraries’ link on the Council’s website. Langeroo features over 300 activities and games and more than 500 words, divided into 27 fun and interesting topics for early learners and ESL students aged three to 11 years. There are three levels of learning. Langeroo can help toddlers identify parts of the face, colours, numbers and shapes while older children can learn about the four seasons, sports, school and food.

RIP: A high intensity strength conditioning class using barbell and light weights. 45-1 hour in duration. Bring towel and water bottle. RIP EXPRESS is a 45 minute major muscle group workout. AXIS: Power to the core in 30 minutes. TRX SUSPENSION TRAINING: Every Suspension Training exercise builds true functional strength and improves flexibility, balance and core stability all at once. Intermediate sessions are higher intensity workouts as basics should be well ingrained in participants. THUMP: 1 hour boxing class. Boxing equipment is provided, inners must be worn and can be purchased for $5 from reception.
TRX FLEX incorporates strength through stretching. VIRTUAL REVOLUTION: Great music and a fantastic calorie burning hour of indoor cycling. You will learn correct technique for improved performance and have fun cycling. Bookings essential. This is a virtual run class - follow the instructor on the screen. YOGA: A class for everyone! For ages 5 and up to 90 or more. You will learn breathing exercises and positions that can help improve arthritic symptoms, insomnia, blood pressure, mood and aid with relaxation and flexibility. This class is suitable for pregnant women. Screening will be conducted prior to participation. Bookings for Yoga are essential. BOOTCAMP: A fun (mostly bodyweight) class run by Lockie. Based around cardio fitness.

Eight of our members travelled to Sarina for the Annual Anzac Memorial Inter Club shoot. A good weekend was held by all. Clermont did very well in the shooting department with most shooters bringing home prizes. Clermont also won the Anzac Memorial Shield - after trying for 5 years.

GUT AND BUTT BLAST: Is a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane, simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps. This will increase fat metabolism at rest and help slim and tone those problematic areas. Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level. OPEN GYM: This is your opportunity to use the gym facilities, there will be a basic weights program and WOD on offer for your utilisation, or you could just be creative and do your own training. LETS LIFT: This program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45 minutes whole body workout. This is achieved through the use of barbell and dumbbell weights. This class is suitable for all fitness levels.
METAPWR: MetaPWR is a fast moving circuit, using moves that need strength, speed and power. All MetaPWR workouts use the entire body,involving your upper and lower body and core muscles. Muscle is metabolically active tissue, so the more muscles you work the more calories you burn. The more calories you burn, the more productive your workouts will be and the faster you will lose fat. CIRCUIT TRAINING: This is a form of body conditioning or resistance training using highintensity/low-intensity aerobic energy. It targets strength building and muscular endurance. An exercise ‘circuit’ is one completion of all prescribed exercises in the program. It is highly enjoyable and recommended to all levels of fitness. METAFIT: This is a 30 minutes bodyweight training system that gets results! It is a functional and effective, metabolic workout that will change the way you train. Created by a former Royal Marine Commando, Metafit combines the latest HIIT techniques with traditional ‘old school’ bodyweight exercises to set the metabolism on fire.
