CHRISTMAS LIGHTS COMPETITION Clermont, it’s time to light up and get festive! Christmas cheer and festivities are rolling out across the Isaac region as the 2020 Christmas Lights competitions are underway. Isaac Regional Council is encouraging residents to raise the bar on their creativity along with switching on Christmas lights and placing decorations on homes and businesses in local communities. Mayor Anne Baker said the annual tradition provides an opportunity for the community to show their festive spirit and create some magical Christmas memories. “What a year it has been! Let’s end 2020 with a sparkle,” Mayor Baker said. “The annual Christmas Lights competition
provides an opportunity to get involved, meet the neighbours and spread some sparkle, joy and fun throughout our towns. “Many of our Isaac residents and business owners spend a great deal of time and effort creating engaging light displays that delight both children and adults alike.” This year, Council will partner with Dysart Community Support Group, Moranbah’s community radio station 4RFM and Clermont’s Scripture Union to coordinate the competition in their hometowns. Mayor Baker said the partnerships with these valuable community organisations are very welcome with Council remaining the major sponsor across the Isaac region. Continued on next page...

CHRISTMAS MEGA DRAW BRINGING CHEER TO THE LOCALS Isaac Regional Council is celebrating the festive season and local businesses in the Isaac region with a Christmas Mega Prize Draw. The Shop Isaac Christmas Mega Prize Draw launches on 1 December 2020 and finishes on 15 December 2020, with the major prizes being drawn on 17 December. Ten lucky shoppers will share in over $2000 in prizes to be won and will each receive a Shop Isaac Gift card, to spend locally. Isaac Regional Council Mayor Baker said the program is more than just your average ‘Buy Local’ campaign, and incorporates a loyalty gift card program, which will see money spent back in
regional communities. “The program includes gift cards which can only be redeemed at local businesses, tourist destinations and events who are part of Shop Isaac,” Mayor Baker said. Shoppers are encouraged to buy local this Christmas and enter for their chance to win, by submitting their receipt and contact details to go in the draw. GAP ANALYSIS ON UNMET YOUTH NEEDS NOW UNDERWAY IN ISAAC Emergency and Long-Term Accommodation Moranbah service coordinator Tracy Chapman said giving young people an opportunity to voice their opinions about what would be most beneficial to meeting their needs is a powerful catalyst for change. “All young people need to have the opportunity to have their say, by doing so we understand their sense of belonging, mastery, independence, and generosity,” Ms Chapman said. “When youth needs are met in positive ways, they are likely to grow into contributing members of their families and the community.” Early engagement with young people has revealed concerns about self-esteem, bullying, mental health, schooling and a lack of training, higher education and employment opportunities. Izzy Turns, a youth member of the Isaac Youth
Unmet Needs Advisory Group, said she cannot wait to see this project progress. “Being just one of the voices for the youth within our region provides great opportunities to guide the development of the project and ensure
barriers for youth are identified for opportunity for change,” she said. Youth service providers, 10-18-years-olds and their parents can access the anonymous Isaac Youth Unmet Needs survey here: speakup.isaac. qld.gov.au/isaac-youth-unmet-needs or by calling research coordinator Kelly McGrath on 0427 544 119.
The online survey closes at midnight on Thursday, 31 December 2020, while youth interviews and focus group discussions will continue through February 2021. The Isaac Youth Unmet Needs final report will be published by June 2021.
ART FUND OPENS TO CONNECT CREATIVES TO THE COMMUNITY
Funding for artists, community groups and creatives looking to adapt and innovate in the new normal is now open for applications. Individuals, cultural groups or organisations are encouraged to apply for the Isaac Regional Council’s Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF). Mayor Anne Baker said creativity connects and energises our regional communities, improving our health and wellbeing. “As recent challenges have shown, our Isaac knows how to pull together in times of crisis,” Mayor Baker said. “In these tough times our arts, cultural and creative groups are at the forefront in showing how to innovate, adapt, support each other and, importantly, stay connected. “These attributes will serve us well as we continue our path to recovery. “Creativity connects our people, powers communities by improving their residents’ health and wellbeing, and provides opportunities for cultural tourism attracting visitors to our region and further stimulating creative industry development. “If you’re an individual, cultural group or organisation who has a creative idea to bring to your community together in a COVID safe way, I encourage you to apply.” The following rounds are now open: • Round One closed on Friday 20 November 2020. DIG IT GARDEN WINNERS HAVE SPRING IN THEIR STEP FOR THE SUMMER A show stopping garden in Clermont has taken out the first ever Dig It, Isaac! competition. Isaac Regional Council in partnership with generous local businesses encouraged residents to get back to basics by starting a new garden or completing a project that’s been sitting on the todo list. Mayor Anne Baker, who was on the judging panel, said six winners from Clermont, Moranbah and Middlemount will share in prizes totalling $3700 with the prize money to be injected back into local Isaac businesses. “Congratulations to Janet Appleton for winning the best overall garden section with her jawdropping, colour popping garden oasis,” she said. “As the major prize winner, Janet walks away with $1000 to spend at local businesses through our Shop Isaac program. “A huge thank you to everyone for taking part in this competition. We received nearly 45 entries with six winners named which is a fantastic outcome given it’s the first regional competition Council has run. “I would like to acknowledge the amazing support from our local sponsors. We could not have done
this without your incredible help. PUBLIC NOTICES CLERMONT WATER TREATMENT PLANT (WTP) WATER UPDATE Isaac Regional Council acknowledges the community’s concerns in relation to water discolouration in Clermont following an irregular fault that occurred with the Clermont Water Treatment Plant (WTP) drinking water supply pumps on Sunday, 29 November 2020.
What to do if you experience discoloured water
Council appreciates that the Clermont community are understandably concerned about water discolouration in the town water supply and we are currently assessing a range of measures to address this.
How to report a water issue
This fault caused the Jeffery Street Reservoir to run dry for a period of approximately 75 minutes. Once the fault was identified, the secondary standby pump was activated and water was instantly delivered to Jeffery Street Reservoir and throughout Clermont. These events caused the release of discoloured water into the network and a number of residences.
The discoloured water, although undesirable, is safe to drink. Regular internal testing is undertaken at the WTP and across the town network in accordance with our Drinking Water Quality Management Plan. Council has a 24-hour response capability and encourages the community to report any water quality issues immediately to 1300 ISAACS (1300 472 227). The community is entitled to quality drinking water supply and Council shares this expectation, which is why we are prioritising this issue and working to resolve these water colour concerns. What are we doing?
Planned water outages will occur for only a short period of time during the cutover to the new water main. Newlands Group will make contact prior to this occurring as residents and business may experience instances of dirty water following this procedure. If this occurs Council recommends flushing tap water for up to five minutes or until the water becomes clear.
The existing water mains have incurred a series of breaks and has reached its end of life. Council has engaged contractors Newlands Group to undertake the project which will construct new water mains to service the area. To improve the robustness of the water network the new mains will be upsized creating a ring main to improve water security.
Access to individual properties may be restricted for short periods of time. Newlands Group will make contact prior to work occurring.

PUBLIC NOTICES 2020-21 FLYING FOX SEASON UPDATE #2, ISAAC REGION - 5 NOVEMBER Flying foxes migrate into Isaac region townships between September and April each year which is a part of a greater yearly migration across the Australian eastern coast. Flying foxes are protected wildlife in Queensland under the Nature Conservation Act 1992, with some species classified as endangered. It is important to note that Australian flying foxes DO NOT carry the COVID-19 coronavirus. CLERMONT Isaac Regional Council advises that Centenary Park will be partially closed, and the western public access gate temporarily closed from: Thursday, 5 November 2020 Until further notice
Council understands the impact on park users and is undertaking planning to minimise disruptions to park users in the future. Temporary fencing will be constructed this week to isolate a roost of up to 80,000 little red flying foxes that have progressively grown since their arrival since September. The temporary fencing is necessary to minimise risks of falling tree limbs on park users. The roost is away from residential backyards, in the trees on the south bank of Hoods Lagoon (corner of Capella and Lime streets). This site is considered a protected roost, under Queensland Government legislation. As flying foxes have used this site for breeding and rearing young, this has impacted on the potential vegetation management.
WATER RESTRICTIONS ADVISORY - LEVEL 2, CLERMONT, EFFECTIVE FROM 14 SEPTEMBER 2020 Isaac Regional Council advises Clermont residents that Level 2 water restrictions came into effect from Monday, 14 September 2020. Projections indicate that the water level will be between 1.25m to 1.5m below the spillway height of Theresa Creek Dam, which supplies the local water treatment plant, on this date. This is the trigger for Level 2 water restrictions. Residents will be notified through Council’s website, Facebook page, next edition of the Clermont Rag and a letterbox drop to reaffirm these restrictions. Applications for an exemption must describe use and volumes required. Exemption approval will be based on social, health, environmental or economic considerations. Standpipes will not be accessible without an exemption from Monday, 14 September 2020. CYCLONIC WINDS WREAK HAVOC TWICE IN A WEEK Summertime can be really hot in Clermont and storms often form, bringing rain and relief from the searing heat. Good rainfalls can top up our dams and water tanks, revive the garden and bring on green grass and “How much rain did you get?” is a favourite topic of conversation. The thunder and lightning maybe noisy but storm chasers and photographers love Mother Nature’s fireworks. Strong winds sometimes accompany the thunderstorms and cause havoc, bringing down powerlines and trees and tearing pieces of roofing iron of homes and businesses. Clermont was hit with cyclonic winds twice in one week in December, 1925. A cyclonic wind struck Clermont early in the evening on Sunday, December 6 and caused considerable damage. The Methodist Church was nearly demolished as it was battered by the cyclonic winds and left with a list of 12 inches. The Leo Hotel’s front balcony was flipped over the building and into a yard behind it. An adjacent drapery shop lost its roof. Damage to both buildings was estimated to be £500-£600. Many homes had their roofs either partially or wholly blown off. Another cyclonic storm swept over Clermont on the evening of December 10, 1925. The Town Hall was unroofed and the wall of one Town Hall office was blown out. The School of Arts Building and 40 homes were also unroofed. Two hotel verandas were demolished, and the raindriven wind was like solid sheets of water. Two men and a woman received minor injuries from the debris. Banchory Station west of Clermont was in the pathway of the cyclonic storm and there was considerable damage done to buildings around the homestead. The men’s quarters, butcher’s shop, stables and store were blown down.

ON THIS DAY….52 YEARS AGO Thursday, November 7, 1968 RAAF plane forced to land at Clermont draws a crowd AN RAAF aircraft that made a forced landing at the Clermont aerodrome also attracted many ‘stickybeaks’. On November 7, 1968, a Hawkre Sidderly 748 with a crew of 10 on board on a routine navigational flight from East Sale in Victoria to the Townville RAAF base when it experienced engine failure while flying near Clermont. The plane took a low swoop over Clermont to make it’s forced landing at the aerodrome. The Hawkre Sidderly 748 made a perfect and safe landing. A fire siren sounded at 1.30pm, alerting the town of an incident. The Clermont Fire brigade, Ambulance and Police personnel drove to the aerodrome, ready to help but weren’t required. COMMUNITY NEWS 2020 ACHIEVEMENTS FOR CLERMONT QUEENSLAND CORRECTIVE SERVICES The Clermont Queensland Correctice Services work camp has managed to complete some amazing projects for the community of Clermont. The Pony Club has a new water tank and freshly painted arena ready for the 2021 season. The Clemont Showgrounds has a freshly painted toilet block and the Clermont Motorcross Club has a sparkling new Club House. The Bowling Club has a fantastic new ramp and steps which will enable people of all abilities to enjoy the activities offered at the Club. Amongst all of this fantastic activity, the work camp assisted in the set up and pack up Clermont’s favourite social activities the Elder’s Gala and the Clermont Races. We also provided ongoing assistance to the Clermont Saleyards and Clermont Historical Museum. Moving forward, 2021 is shaping up to be a busy year with plenty more projects to be completed for

the community and more skills to be learnt by the prisoners. Queensland Corrective Services prides itself on being able to provide a labour source to the clubs and organisations of the communities in which they live. The work camp initiative is important in offering lowsecurity prisoners the opportunity to make reparation to the community harmed by offending behaviours, whilst developing skills that will increase employment opportunities upon their release. Clermont work camp is always ready to hop in and help the non-for-profit organisations to achieve their goals for their much-loved community clubs and organisations. Merry Christmas, Clermont! ON THE SHELF MERRY CHRISTMAS! Christmas is near and many of us look forward to taking time out with a book over the Christmas/New Year break. Come in to the Clermont Library and borrow out some books to enjoy over Christmas. If you’re not an Isaac Libraries member, you are welcome to sign up for a membership if you have proof of residency in the Isaac region. If you are travelling over Christmas, an e-audiobook will help keep drivers and passengers entertained and alert while on the road. This year has been an interesting and challenging one with the threat of COVID-19 and the shutdowns and restrictions because of it. Clermont Library staff thank patrons and the community for their patience and co-operation while the library has adapted to being COVIDSafe. Staff wish everyone a Happy and COVIDSafe Holiday Season.
TRAVEL WITH WORLD TRADE PRESS Many of us may have had plans to travel abroad this year but international borders were closed globally due to COVID-19. You can still travel overseas virtually through World Trade Press, an e-resource available through the Library, Art and Culture link on the Isaac Regional Council website. If you are interested in travel or planning a trip overseas, you may find World Trade Press helpful as it has travel guides, information about health and safety, phone and modem plugs, world time zones, clothing size guides and more. Click onto World Food to explore recipes and food culture by country. A new country is featured daily.
Other sub links to explore in World Trade Press include, World Culture, Lingo Lite, Global Road Warrior, MapsOnline, World Business, A to A the USA and Food America. There are also junior versions of many of the sub links. World Trade Press can be accessed through the Library, Arts and Culture link on the Isaac Regional Council website at: isaac.qld.gov.au/library-artsand-culture/e-resources. You will need an Isaac Libraries membership number to log on.
E-RESOURCES An Isaac Libraries membership allows you to borrow out not just books, DVDs and audiobooks on CD, but also e-books and digital audiobooks. Library membership also gives you access to e-resources, digital magazines, movies and music online. You don’t even need to visit a library to sign-up.
