SEWING PASSION TAILOR-MADE FOR CLERMONT HISTORICAL CENTRE He could arguably be the Tailor Swift of the sewing world in regional Queensland with his unique passion for antique sewing machines. Les Walsh will share his extensive knowledge on the history of the sewing machine at the Clermont Historical Centre on May 14. The former aircraft mechanic is also a proud collector of 150 antique sewing machines with one dating back to 1860. Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker said Mr Walsh’s visit will be a little bit of a homecoming mixed with excitement to share his story and passion. “Our Clermont Historical Centre is proud to host Clermont-born Les Walsh,” Mayor Baker said. “We’re thrilled he will appear to talk not just to people who sew but also to anyone who enjoys tinkering with machines or who remembers the prominent place the sewing machine once held in most households.”

Mr Walsh, former owner of a Townsville quilting business, said the sewing machine was the first piece of machinery introduced in most households. “Back in those days, you had to make your own clothes and mend them, make curtains and everything had to sewed,” he said. “When I was operating my business, I became interested in the mechanisms that made sewing machines sew”. The Clermont Historical Centre will be open from 3pm on Tuesday, May 14 with visitors welcome to wander the centre and view the outdoor exhibits including the Masonic Lodge, home to the centre’s sewing machine collection. The event is free with afternoon tea to be served from 3.15pm before Mr Walsh’s talk begins at 3.30pm. For catering purposes, RSVPs are appreciated by calling the Clermont Historical Centre on 4983 3311.
CLERMONT SHOW LIFE MEMBERS contributed by Margaret Henn The Clermont Show - the Isaac Region’s Show is approaching fast and the Committee members are becoming easy to identify by their harried looks and preoccupied demeanour. For they are the ones who are responsible for the planning, the organisation and the running of the Show. They do a wonderful job. But it must not be forgotten that the Show also owes a debt to the past Committee members as it was they who built the framework on which the modern Shows operate. These past Committees are represented by the Honour Roll of those who have been awarded Life Membership in recognition of their dedicated service to the Society. Although the Show has been operating for 151 years, the first Life Memberships were not awarded until 1973. Last year as part of the 150 year celebrations, personal profiles were composed from the recollections of as many of these Life Members (or their families) as possible and the following provides excerpts from some of these profiles. The first recipient of Life Membership was Charlie Tindale in 1973. Born in Clermont in 1904, Charlie was the second boy in a large family. They lived at Peak Vale as his father, Walter Reginald Tindale, was at that time General Manager for Coreena Pastoral Company. During the floods of 1916, the lives of the Tindale family were saved when they were able to shelter in the upper story of the Peak Vale homestead. Charlie Tindale was considered the founding father of the cattle section of the Clermont Show. He believed that the Clermont district was one of the best cattle producing areas in the state and should be showcased by a fat cattle Section. He pushed this idea to the committee and finally they agreed to go with the plan, if he would undertake to organise it, which he did with enthusiasm. The venue for 1958 was the local sale yards. The interest and support demonstrated at the first event ensured that the section would be on-going. Agents refunded most of their commission from the sale to the Show Committee, and soon their own yards were built at the old grounds on the flat. Charlie and his wife Isobel boosted funds for the yards by introducing a ‘Guess the Weight of the Cow’ competition. The more convenient yard site attracted many more spectators. Sideshows followed and the Show ‘took off’ and has gone from strength to strength ever since. Another worthy recipient was Des Salmond. Des was the voice of the Rodeo and the Show, acting as announcer for 45 years. He started announcing in the early days using a tin funnel, progressing from that to a
microphone made out of an old telephone. As well as announcing at the Show, Des spent many hours selling tickets in the ‘Guess the Weight Competition’. From all reports, it seemed that Des sold an outstanding number of tickets each year and according to some, “Could sell ice to an Eskimo!” The Salmond family often donated a Degulla bullock to be the Guess the Weight animal. When he retired from announcing after the 1986 Show, Des said that at last he would have time to talk with all the friends he had made over the years, and have an opportunity to see what went on outside the main ring. In 1985, the Clermont Rodeo and Show Society awarded Des a Life Membership in recognition of his long years of service. His daughter, Joanne has also been a keen supporter, and in 2003, she too was awarded Life Membership – a fine family record! In 1988 there were two Life Members honoured, Arthur Dixon and Frank ‘Cobber’ Patch. Arthur was particularly interested in the social aspect of the organisation and acted as MC at the dances, helped organise the Balls, Beef Cattle Dinners and Street Parades for years. Arthur took a keen interest in the Cattle Section of the Show, holding the positions of Chief Steward and Cattle Committee Secretary for a long period and doing a power of voluntary work at the old rodeo grounds on the flat. As Beef Cattle Secretary, Arthur kept meticulous records of exhibitors, their nominations and the winners, all neatly hand written and organised in a hard covered book. At Show time, this record book was his bible and this, together with the help of a couple of whiskeys, helped him announce the prize winners at the annual Beef Dinner for many years through some of the 1970s, 1980s and the early 1990s. Frank ‘Cobber’ Patch was an enthusiastic and active member on the committee for 25 years. In 1988, special guest at the annual Show, Governor of Queensland, Sir Walter Campbell presented Life Membership badges to Cobber, Alan Pownall and Bill Faint for dedicated services to the association. Cobber acted as Chief Steward of the Fat Cattle Section for many years and after a very busy career spanning over forty years in the cattle industry, he retired from Primac in 1982. When the EH Faint Memorial Showgrounds were completed, Cobber was brought out of retirement to be given the honour of conducting the first auction of bullocks in the new saleyards. More memories of Life Members past, next week.
CHANCE TO ENJOY SOCIAL DRINKS IN CENTENARY PARK
Residents in Clermont will get a chance to enjoy social drinks in Centenary Park as Isaac Regional Council is increasing the number of designated public places for the purpose of the Liquor Act 1992. Mayor Anne Baker said council is committed to improving the liveability of the region through implementing safe opportunities for residents to use public parks and facilities. “We live in a great region that is driven by pure people power and is highly social,” Mayor Baker said.
achieve open, welcoming communities that are inclusive and resilient.”
Centenary Park as a designated public place where liquor may be consumed will have its own period or times that specify when the designation is to have effect. Mayor Baker said residents should read the notice signs to ensure they are following the law. “We have some wonderful parks and facilities across the region, and we want people to be able to take full advantage of them,” Mayor Baker said.
“Through creating additional spaces where people can gather for a social drink with friends and family, we will

TOWN FULL OF SUPERKIDS At the beginning of March you may have noticed an increase in the number of superhero kids in town. That’s because Kids Club had a Superhero night. Many kids and leaders dressed up as their favourite Superheroes or used their imaginations to invent their own superheroes to save the world in a series of fun games. Kids Club runs the 2nd Friday of the month (during school terms) from 4pm-5.30pm and the next one is today, Friday, 10 May with a ‘Minute to Win It’ theme. Kids Club is for kids from Prep to grade 6, is held at Life Church (58 Capella St), and is completely free. We’d love to have kids come along. Also this year, Kids Club is going EXTREME with a Kids Day Camp planned for the first two days of the school holidays – registrations open soon.
