LANDMARK BUILDING TO HOUSE POPULAR CLERMONT EXHIBITION Visitors will continue to be transported into Clermont’s history books when a landmark building reopens for the first time in five years.
Records show that both the Clermont Oddfellows and the Peak Downs Masons met at the upper storey of the Town Hall in Clermont during the 1880s.
The milestone re-opening of Masonic Lodge in March will feature the popular 2018 exhibition 100 Objects.
In 1913, enough funds had been raised to build their own premises.
Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker said the landmark building is etched into the gold and coal mining town’s history.
This structure, built by William Southgate, was completed in July 1913 and has since been relocated to the Clermont Historical Centre where it still stands today.
“The building has been brought back to life after it was closed in 2012,” Mayor Anne Baker said.
Since 2012, renovations of the lodge include a partially new roof and guttering, new stumps, new drainage system under the building, new landing and stairs at the front entrance, the old asbestos flooring was removed and replaced with new flooring, interior and exterior paint, extensive electrical work, installation of display cabinets, air-conditioning and threephase power.
“The renovations took quite some time and we appreciate the efforts of staff involved in preparing this building for a new chapter.” “We look forward to the reopening on March 6 and we hope the community and tourists rally behind us in the reopening and to experience a large piece of Clermont’s history.” The Loyal Hope of Clermont Lodge No. 9 was opened by District Deputy, PG Craven on September 17, 1878. The Peak Downs Masonic Lodge No.1825 was established a year later, on October 13, 1879.

The new exhibition Towns of Minerals and Metals opened at the Clermont Historical Centre on Wednesday, March 6. The centre will resume its normal operating hours of Wednesday to Saturday 9am to 3pm up until its closure on Christmas Eve 2019.

GETTING OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT-PATH Clermont’s Capella Street is set to receive a facelift under foot. Work is beginning soon on improvements to the footpath between Herschel and Box Streets as part of Isaac Regional Council’s 2018-19 Building a Stronger Isaac Budget, with funding provided under the Queensland Government’s Works for Queensland (W4Q) program. The type of treatment for the footpath was chosen following feedback from Clermont business operators and the community in August last year. Exposed aggregate was the preferred choice, resulting in a lightly ground surface to display the honey stone and concrete colour for a pedestrian friendly surface. Mayor Anne Baker said it was great to have the community involved in the process to help to identify concerns and give feedback. “Capella Street is the commercial activity centre of Clermont. We wanted to upgrade the footpath for aesthetic and safety reasons, while minimising disruption to the affected businesses,” Mayor Baker said. “The comments and conversations were invaluable and gave Council an opportunity to share the details of the project with the people who will be impacted by it. Thank you to everyone who participated.”

Minister for Local Government Stirling Hinchliffe said the Palaszczuk Government is pleased to be contributing $400,000 towards the project. “It’s another great example of how our $600 million Works for Queensland program is benefiting towns throughout regional Queensland, including Clermont. These improvements will significantly improve the amenity of the town for local residents and businesses, and I want to congratulate Isaac Regional Council on this initiative,” Minister Hinchliffe said. Mayor Baker said the contract for the works had been awarded, with construction expected to commence in May. “Council will be working with the contractor to minimise any disturbance to Capella Street businesses during construction, but if you do experience any issues, never hesitate to contact Council’s Customer Service Centre on 1300 ISAACS (1300 472 227).” Construction of the footpath is being spread over two financial years, with stage one comprising of the eastern corner of Capella and Daintree streets at the post office and the western side of Capella Street between Hershel to Daintree streets. The area of the footpath for stage one is 794 square metres, with the remaining 788 square metres being completed in 2019-20.

In 2018 the Clermont Men’s Shed decided to contribute to Queensland’s terrible drought. The Clermont Men’s Shed, men and ladies donated all monies raised from their raffles run at the Leo Hotel on Friday nights, along with monies raised from the regular sausage sizzles held at Mitre 10 on Saturday mornings.
To Les Bones and John Wright for all their efforts running the regular sausage sizzles on a Saturday morning at Mitre 10. The Clermont Men’s Shed has been able to once again contribute to QCWA Clermont Branch an amount of $780 towards the current flood relief appeal.
A total of $911 was given to the QCWA Clermont Branch for the 2018 drought relief. Whilst we are a not- for- profit organisation, we felt that the drought relief and flood relief were of significant importance and both warranted our support. We have decided to do a similar gesture for the flood relief for our western mates. Thank you for the valuable help from our ticket sellers Kev Burns, John Wright and Mary Roncato. Mary also is responsible for the setting up the raffle trays and thanks also to Peter Bleakley for his offer of help. Thanks also to Les Boal from the Leo Hotel and the great bunch of people who gather there every Friday night and support us with our fund raising. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

PUBLIC NOMINATIONS POSITION OF DIVISION 4 COUNCILLOR Under the provisions of the Local Government Act 2009, nominations are invited from eligible members of the community to fill the position of Division 4 Councillor, Isaac Regional Council. A vacancy has arisen in Division 4 following the resignation of Peter Freeleagus, effective 26 February 2019. As per s166(5) of the Local Government Act 2009 (the Act), the vacant office must be filled by the local government appointing, by resolution, a person who is qualified to be a councillor. Under the S166(8) of the Act, the Chief Executive Officer invites nominations from residents of the Isaac Regional local government area to fill the position of Division 4 Councillor. To be eligible to nominate you must be: (a)
be an Australian citizen aged 18 and over
(b)
a resident of the local government area
(c)
enrolled on the electoral roll
(d)
not disqualified from being a councillor under the provisions of the Act
Nominations close on 29 March 2019. All nominations need to be completed on the appropriate form, which is available from Council’s website and all Council offices. It’s been over a year since I took over as Officer- in-Charge at Clermont Police station, and this is my first article for the Rag so it is long overdue. I am aware my predecessor was a regular writer for the Rag so hopefully I will be able to submit more regular articles. Many of you may not be aware that the station has had an almost complete staff change. Here is a list of our current officers/staff: • • • • • •

In 2018 Clermont Police achieved some excellent results. We charged 18 drink or drug drivers, impounded or immobilised several vehicles in relation to hooning complaints, executed search warrants for drugs at multiple addresses across Clermont. We charged or drug diverted 23 people with possession of dangerous drugs, possession of drug utensils and supplying dangerous drugs. If you know of any information that may assist us in investigating drug matters, please call crime stoppers on 1800 333 000, or let us know at the Police station. By law, we must keep any information strictly confidential. We have taken a tougher stance on alcohol fuelled violence at licensed premises, banning identified offenders from all licensed premises in Clermont until their court appearance and then requesting six month banning notices from the courts.

We also had a chance to get into the community, linking in with Clermont Community Housing and Other Services Inc to put on an afternoon tea at Centenary Park for domestic violence awareness month in May. We were able to conduct a bike and road safety presentation in August at the Clermont State School. Mackay Crime Prevention also came out and conducted a few presentations at the high school. This year we are hoping to initiate and involve ourselves in more community events including Blue Disco’s, Coffee with a Cop, Domestic Violence Awareness Month (May) and Crime Prevention presentations. We had to seize a number of firearms in 2018 due to persons letting their weapons licence expire. It’s a lot easier to just renew your licence than applying for it all over again! Just a reminder regarding getting in contact with police, if it’s an emergency please call triple zero, if it’s not urgent call Policelink on 131 444 or call the station on 4983 4444. Please be aware that the station is not staffed 24 hours a day, so if you leave a message on our phone we will only be able to action it when the next officer begins their shift. Policing is only really successful with the support of the community and I thank you for assisting us with information, patience and great country spirit. I really am enjoying working and living in Clermont and am looking forward to the years to come.

BABY BOUNCE, STORY TIME AND CRAFT STORY TIME GROWS Story Time is one of several children’s program held at the Clermont Library each week. Every Friday morning for the past 10 years, children and adults have visited the library for an hour of storytelling, singing and craft.
The Clermont Library runs several weekly children’s sessions. They are a great way to connect with other parents with young children. BABY BOUNCE (0-2 years) Come along on Thursdays from 9.30am to 10am.
Story Time has grown so popular that library staff are introducing an extra Story Time session on Tuesdays from 9.30am to 10.30am and of course the usual Friday session will continue from 9.30am to 10.30am.
Baby Bounce is a chance for parents to interact with their child through movement, music and song.
Story Time sessions need to be kept to a limited number for safety and planning, and so that everyone can get the most out of their Story Time fun.
This is held on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9.30am to 10.30am.

SPOTLIGHT ON SHERRYL WOODS Sherryl Woods is an American author of romance and mystery novels. She has written more than 110 books and also writes under the names of Alexandra Kirk and Suzanne Sherrill. Woods had a career in journalism and was the coordinator of a motivational program for staff at the University of Miami-Jackson Memorial Medical Centre. She began writing full-time in 1986.

HAVE FUN WITH SPHERO STEM sessions with Sphero are held at the Clermont Library on Thursday afternoons from 3.30pm to 4pm. A Sphero is a small robotic toy that interacts with an app on a device such as an iPad. A Sphero can be programmed to move around or through an obstacle course.

Kids Club runs from 4pm to 5.30pm every 2nd Friday of the month during term time. It is for kids from Prep to Grade 6 and held at Life Church, 58 Capella Street.
Please contact Lloyd on 4983 2010 or Frances on 4983 1478. We shoot on the first and third Sunday of every month. Arrive at the range at 9.30am to commence shooting at 10am. There is no cost for these activities. Parents are to sign their children in and out when bringing them and a registration form will need to be completed on your child’s first attendance. Friday, March 8 - Superheroes. Come dressed as your favourite superhero or make on up. Friday, May 10 - Minute to win it. Fast paced games for a fast paced night. Friday, June 14 - What’s in the box? You don’t find out till the end of the session. You must protect your team’s box at all costs through all the games.
