PROUD NEW AUSTRALIANS WELCOMED IN ISAAC Isaac warmly welcomed seven new citizens to the region in a special ceremony in Moranbah recently.

“Being part of the ceremony to welcome our new citizens is a real privilege and we are thrilled to help them embark on this exciting new journey in their lives.”

The proud new Australians gathered with friends and family at the Isaac Regional Council Chambers in a close knit ceremony officially welcoming them to the country and the region.

The new citizens welcomed are Cesar Bequillo and Rian Bequillo, Elmer Manio and Mark Manio, Zaldy Santiago, Gavino Siatrez and Regie Taguiling, all from the Philippines.

Mayor Anne Baker said citizenship ceremonies provide a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and honour the rich diversity of cultures that exists within the Isaac region and Australia.

Isaac Regional Council, under direction of the Department of Home Affairs, conducts Australian Citizenship Ceremonies throughout the year for registered applicants.

“It’s an honour to invite and witness people make the pledge to become citizens of our great nation,” Mayor Baker said.

Any persons interested in becoming an Australian Citizen should contact the Department of Home Affairs on 131 881 during office hours from 8.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday.

“Our new citizens have undertaken a journey much greater than most of us could imagine.

“The process can take some people several years to bring to fruition and I congratulate them for their commitment, persistence and desire to be officially recognised as an Australian.

CLERMONT WATER QUALITY INFOSHARE NOVEMBER 2018 WHAT HAPPENED? About 90% of the Isaac region is presently drought-declared, including Clermont and the catchment which supports Theresa Creek Dam. Prior to significant rainfall on October 30, Clermont had been subject to level two water restrictions. Inflows into the dam were such that the spillway overtopped.

Unfortunately this storm event and subsequent rainfall washed large volumes of sediment and organic matter into the dam, which supplies the Clermont Water Treatment Plant.This impacted the overall quality of raw water supply to the water treatment plant and Council operators have continued to adjust treatment measures to address this.

High sediment levels in the raw water supply caused a chemical pump that was set up to cope with this turbidity failed on November 16.

Whilst the supply was still treated, the turbidity passed into the distribution network.

This issue was addressed by operational staff as soon as practicable.

When the pump was restarted manually, it addressed the turbidity issue, but the chemical mix created a discoloration of the treated water.

The chemicals used are tasteless and odourless, harmless to human health, but in quantity do discolour water.

WHERE TO FROM HERE? Council will be installing new pumps and controls at the Clermont Water Treatment Plant by the end of January 2019.

These measures will ensure poor quality water will be identified and the plant shut down immediately so operators can make necessary adjustments to treatment processes. This will also prevent water delivery into the town water supply until water quality is at a high level.

In the long-term, the town of Clermont is in need of a 5ML clear water storage reservoir and valves to isolate problems from the rest of the network. A project scope has been written and grant funding opportunities have been sought.

On November 20, Council approved a letter seeking further funding on desilting the Theresa Creek Dam. This project will also develop silt traps in the catchment/creeks.

WATER QUALITY Our trade qualified plumbers and operators in Clermont which share nearly 150 years of experience follow a rigorous process.

The Australian Drinking Water Guidelines are used by Isaac Regional Council to provide safe, good quality drinking water.

Council’s Drinking Water Quality Management Plan (DWQMP) is approved by Department of Natural Resources, Mines and Energy. As detailed in the DWQMP, Council strictly follows various testing and monitoring regimes to ensure drinking water is always safe.

Contaminated water may not look, taste, or smell different to safe drinking water.

This is why monitoring and testing of water is so important. The Australian Drinking Water Quality Guidelines (ADWQG) are followed stringently by Isaac Regional Council with implemented monitoring programs to ensure a safe drinking water supply and protect public health.

Each year, we conduct over 10,000 tests at all Isaac water treatment plants for more than 100 parameters. We perform daily operational testing and continuous online monitoring at our water treatment plants and many of our water storage tanks and dams.

In addition to this, compliance sampling, verification monitoring and analysis is also conducted by a National Association of Testing Authorities, Australia) certified laboratory. All of this data is closely monitored by our Drinking Water Quality team.

When the water is discoloured water Metals such as iron and manganese occur naturally in water. Iron and manganese are not always completely removed during the water treatment process and can slowly accumulate in the pipe. When this accumulated material is disturbed, it can cause discoloured water through your tap. This can last for several days however, if this is the cause, the water is usually safe to drink. In relation to the November issues in Clermont, if you have any concerns, please call us on 1300 ISAACS as we’re here to help.

When there is dirty water Where Council is undertaking planned maintenance works, we will notify residents ahead of time, however unexpected events such as mains breaks or fire-fighting may result in dirty water. This may be due to deposits that build up over time in the pipes being disturbed by the change in the water flow rate and direction.

If you experience dirty water, run the tap closest to the water meter for five minutes and your water should run clear. If not, avoid using the dishwasher or washing machine during this time and call Council on 1300 ISAACS (1300 47 22 27).

HOW YOU CAN HELP Council appreciates that the community are understandably concerned about the water discolouration. The community are entitled to expect quality drinking water and Council shares that expectation. The water quality seems to have improved however if there is anyone with continued discolouration or dirty water to please call 1300 47 22 27 so it can be lodged and actioned.

COUNCIL CHRISTMAS/NEW YEAR CLOSURES Council facilities All Council administrative offices, libraries and depots will be closed for the Christmas/New Year period from close of business Friday, December 21 2018, reopening Wednesday, January 2 2019.

Waste services Council’s waste management facilities will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day public holidays but will otherwise operate as normal over the Christmas/New Year period.

Due to public holiday closures, the Nebo waste facility will open from 7am to 12pm on Monday, December 24 and Monday, December 31.

Kerbside collection services will also operate as scheduled, even on public holidays.

PUBLIC NOTICES PARTIAL TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF CENTENARY PARK, CLERMONT - UPDATE #3 Isaac Regional Council advises that the temporary fencing to isolate the flying fox roost will remain partially closed until further notice.

This means that a pedestrian gate on the corner of Capella and Lime streets will be partially closed.

Alternative access is available since majority of the park, including the shade structure and toilets, is unaffected by this temporary closure.

The roost is away from residential backyards, in the trees on the south bank of Hoods Lagoon (corner of Capella and Lime streets).

The flying fox roost has decreased substantially in the past week however Council will continue to monitor the flying fox roost in case the number increases over the coming weeks.

Council workers had trimmed some trees in the park to try and discourage more roosting in the area last month.

Residents are reminded that it is against the law to harm or disturb a flying fox roost, and unplanned and unauthorised actions can impact on you, your neighbours and your community.

Council recommends that residents undertake proactive vegetation management at properties to prevent flying foxes from camping in their backyards.

The best way to do this is to trim or remove potential camp trees, commonly mature mango, fig, or poinciana, little red flying foxes can also camp in eucalyptus, palm and other trees.

Council thanks residents for their understanding and apologises for any inconvenience caused.

SPOTLIGHT ON CHRIS HAMMER

Bright, vibrant picture book tales come alive when read by library staff along with a simple craft activity which helps enhance fine motor skill development.

Chris Hammer is an Australian author with a journalism background.

He worked as a journalist for more than 30 years, covering Australian Federal politics and international affairs, as well as a reporter for SBS. Hammer has published two non-fiction books – The River: A Journey Through the Murray-Darling Basin and The Coast: A Journey Along Australia’s Eastern Shores.

His first fiction novel, Scrublands was published in July, 2018. Scrublands is a crime novel set in an isolated country town crippled by drought.

This is held on Fridays from 9.30am to 10.30am.

All the under 11’s played at home.

Under 13’s defeated Magpies White.

Junior Bulls defeated Clermont Gold, a great game was had by all.

Magpies were bowled out for 117 runs off 18 overs.

Clermont made 2 for 118 off 17 overs to convincingly win the game.

It was a great team bowling effort. Captain for the day Clayton L took two wickets.

Clermont Green 5 for 192 defeated Brothers Blue 10 for 129.

Batting was at its best with Cooper H 54 runs off 35 balls and Clayton M 34 runs off 35 balls.

Noah G showed great form with the bat scoring 23 runs.

Cooper N made 24 runs and took 1 wicket. Brea W took 2 wickets. Luke F 12 runs, Barney H and Jake P each took a wicket.

Great team come back from being down, 2 for 8 to win a tough match. Well done under 13’s.

Great work from these experienced players as role models in their first season.

THUMP A 1 hour boxing for fitness class, boxing equipment is provided (gloved, focus pads, kick shields, etc). Inners must be worn, these can be purchased from reception for $5 prior to beginning the session.

VIRTUAL RIP A high intensity strength conditioning class using barbell and light dumbbell weights. 45 minutes – 1 hour in duration.

VIRTUAL CYCLE CHALLENGE Revolution by group Rx is a cycling program that brings the outdoor ride – inside. Interval bases cadence training takes your classes through sprints, hill and mountains, to achieve results and personal goals.

Revolution is a 60-minute cycling program tailor-made for anyone who can ride a bike. This class is capped at 10 participants.

KANGA TRAINING Kanga training is a complete workout during which both cardiovascular endurance/flexibility and muscular capacity/strength are enhanced. Unlike traditional exercise classes, new mums need not worry about finding a babysitter or minding an unsettled baby during class because the babies are worn on them and get to be part of the action!

As well as the physical benefits, the opportunity to meet other local mums in a fun, relaxed environment boosts their emotional wellbeing.

The pelvic floor and abdominal muscles as well as correct posture are given special attention.

Kangatrainers are also trained in babywearing best practices and can help mums ensure the safest and most comfortable carrying positions for their babies.

FIGHT CLUB JIU JITSU Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art specialising in submission grappling. It is a non-striking sport that promotes fitness, self-confidence, respect, flexibility and teaches self defence strategies.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes have now started for Adults and Kids (8+). Both Gi and no-Gi classes are being offered.

GUT AND BUTT BLAST: is a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane, simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps.

An exercise ‘circuit’ is one completion of all prescribed exercises in the program. It is highly enjoyable and recommended to all levels of fitness.

METAFIT: this is a 30 minutes bodyweight training system that gets results! It is a functional and effective, metabolic workout that will change the way you train.

Created by a former Royal Marine Commando, Metafit combines the latest HIIT techniques with traditional ‘old school’ bodyweight exercises to set the metabolism on fire.
