AWARDS TO RECOGNISE THE INSPIRING WOMEN IN OUR LIVES Inspiring women across the community will have the chance to share their stories of empowerment and personal victory at the Clermont Inspiring Women in Isaac event on Saturday, 7 March. The afternoon starts at 3pm and will include the presentation of the Inspiring Women in Isaac Awards, afternoon tea, lucky door prizes, tea, coffee, entertainment by local female vocalist Hayley Howe, guest speaker and discussion panel. Residents are encouraged to recognise and celebrate the diverse community of strong women at the Inspiring Women in Isaac Clermont event as part of Queensland Women’s Week and International Women’s Day. The 2020 Inspiring Women in Isaac awards will pay tribute to women of all ages who inspire, encourage and make a positive difference to the lives of those around them.

Attendees will be inspired by guest speaker Elisha Parker, named the 2020 NAB Agribusiness Rising Champion. An impressive line-up of inspiring local women will be part of the panelist discussion. Leigh Dyer, Ella Anderson, Andrea Moller, Jody Danson and Courtney Passfield will answer questions about their inspiration, successes and give their advice to young Clermont women. Family and friends can come together for the grandmothers, mothers, sisters, daughters and friends whose daily contributions make our lives and communities brighter. The 2020 Queensland Women’s Week theme – Celebrating our diverse community of strong women – highlights the diversity of women, aiming to empower and inspire Queensland women and girls to embrace and celebrate their unique qualities and experiences.
PUBLIC NOTICES EARLY BIRD DISCOUNT FOR RATES Isaac Regional Council would like to advise residents that rates notices will be issued from Monday, 10 February 2020.
Discount period closes 11 March 2020. Ratepayers who have encountered delays with the postal service in their area can register their email address with Council for an additional rates notice to be issued electronically. If you have recently moved or changed your contact details, please check that you have informed Council to ensure delivery of rates notices on time. Ratepayers who make prompt payment on or before 11 March will receive a 10 per cent discount on general rates. Unpaid rates from 12 March will incur 9.83 per cent interest per annum, compounded daily. If you have not received your rates notice by Tuesday, 18 February please contact Council.
WATER NOTICES SET TO ARRIVE Isaac water users are urged to keep an eye on letterboxes as water notices are set to arrive from February 2020. The water notices, for the period between July 2019 to December 2019, will be issued to more than 8,500 Isaac properties. Residents are encouraged to pay before 5pm on 13 March 2020. Council’s ongoing water consumption charging program is in effect across all Isaac communities. Council has worked hard to keep this as a fair system to stop lower water consumers subsidising heavy users. Users can set email and SMS alerts and be notified of water leaks and high consumption within days of occurrence through MiWater. Ratepayers can sign up online at www.isaac.qld.gov.au/miwater and visit www.isaac.qld.gov.au/water-charges for more information. 1080 WILD DOG AND FERAL PIG BAITING PROGRAM 2020 Isaac Regional Council would like to advise all graziers that the second round of baiting for 2020 will be conducted to provide landholders with an opportunity to undertake further control of wild dog and feral pig populations. Currently this baiting period is scheduled for the dates below:
Round 2 – Monday 24 August to Friday 18 September ‘Doggone’ factory baits are available outside of these times, orders must be made in advance and delivery is approximately three weeks from order date. ‘Doggone’ baits are supplied ‘at cost’. Factory baits are available for purchase through Council. Unfortunately, it was destroyed in the 1916 flood. The new bridge, erected in the 1990’s, was built on the initial foundations of the bridge.
The original foundations can still be seen today. The photo above illustrates the previous Town Hall situated at the current playground in Centenary Park.
ON THIS DAY - 120 YEARS AGO - 2 MARCH 1900 Sister Beatrice Huston was the first Queensland nurse to volunteer to serve in the Boer War. In 1879, Beatrice Huston was born to Mr Robert and Mrs Bessie Huston in Clermont. She was a nursing sister at the Peak Downs Hospital when the Australian colonies offered troops for the South Africa war. Her brothers William John Huston, a Lance corporal in the 3 ACH and Robert Ernest Huston, a Farrier Sergeant with the 4th Queensland Imperial Bushmen as well as many Clermont young men were enlisted. She wanted to support the troops and was quoted stating, ‘You know I thought it was bad not to have a representative at all from Queensland in South Africa, so I paid my own expenses over and offered my services to the authorities.’ With letters of introduction from the Queensland Premier, Robert Philp, Sister Huston was farewelled in Brisbane at the Botanical Gardens and again by the Clermont boys in the military camp on 2 March 1900. She commenced nursing duties as a civilian nurse on the 14 April 1900 at the No 3 General Hospital Rhondebosch. Her efforts were recognized, and the
Queens South African Medal was awarded to her by King Edward VII at Marlborough House. HAVE I READ THIS BOOK BEFORE If you are an avid reader, it can be frustrating to remember which books you have read. All books in the Isaac Libraries collection have a memory jogger at the front of the book. Library staff use the memory joggers to stamp the book’s return date when it’s borrowed. The memory joggers can also be used to write your initials on it, so you know you have borrowed the book.

International Women’s Day will be celebrated on Sunday, 08 March and the theme is Each for Equal.
Judith Wright (31 May 1951 – 25 June 2000) was an Australian poet, environmentalist and campaigner for Aboriginal land rights. She studied philosophy, english,psychology and history at the University of Sydney.
International Women’s Day recognises the achievements of and contributions by women in science, engineering, literature, sports, the Arts, human rights and more. The Clermont Library has many books, both fiction and non-fiction, in its collection on Australian pioneering women, female athletes, women in law enforcement and more.

Wright’s first book of poetry, The Moving Image, was published in 1946 while she was working as a research officer at the University of Queensland. Her first collection of short stories, The Nature of Love, was published in 1966. Wright was a founding member of the Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland and was an active campaigner for the conservation of the Great Barrier Reef and Fraser Island. Wright has been recognised posthumously in many ways, including a Queensland Electoral seat named in her honour and the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts in Brisbane dedicated to her. During Queensland’s 150th anniversary celebrations in 2009, Wright was announced as one of the Q150 Icons of Queensland.

CLERMONT BEARS The 2020 season is bearing down on us and in readiness, the team is heading into Yeppoon this weekend for their first trial match of the season. The Yeppoon Seagulls are the reigning premiers in the Rockhampton district senior rugby league competition so it will be exciting to see how the Bears will measure up. Coach Tony Wilkinson who has organized the trial with the Seagulls Shaun Goode is excited for the opportunities the game will provide. “It’s a great opportunity for some team building, and to see how much they really want to play for each other, said Tony. Wilko says the trial against a team outside of the regular competition gives him a chance to see the individual efforts the boys put into the game and the way they represent their club. “Clermont has a very proud history, and everyone keeps talking about the great culture the club has. I can’t wait to see this on the field,” he said. Our fervent supporters will agree with this. This game will be held at Webb Park Yeppoon from 6pm Saturday March 7. The following weekend sees the Bears take the field in another pre-season trial at Emerald in the Central Highlands 2020 Hitout. This is a round robin competition held in Emerald on March 14. Leading up to the season start, we will be profiling our players and the line up is impressive! Coach Wilko can’t fault their efforts at training, and he is excited about the first home game. He’s heard about the energy that comes from the crowd at Bear Park… and can’t wait to experience it. The first home game is currently set to be played on a Friday night April 17, against the Middlemount Panthers, however the Blackwater Crushers have had to withdraw from the competition so there will be draw changes. Stay tuned…any changes will be advised through the Rag, and through our Facebook page… A few changes to the clubhouse of late with our wonderful sponsors Built To Plan extending storage space inside the club house.
