RURAL RECHARGE WITH BOOT-SCOOTIN’ AT CLERMONT SHOWGROUNDS Dancing in hope the heavens will open is at the top of the agenda at Clermont Showgrounds as a Golden Guitar award winner leads the chorus for Isaac’s droughtstricken communities. Multiple award-winning singer songwriter, horseman extraordinaire and Dolly’s Dream Ambassador Tom Curtain is the headline act at the We’re Still Here concert, incorporating the Rural Recharge Night this Friday. Mayor Anne Baker said 90.3 per cent of the Isaac region is gripped by drought but it is the region’s fighting spirit which carries the sheer resilience and determination one day at a time. “The lack of rain is having a devastating flow on effect not just economically but emotionally,” Mayor Baker said. “There’s so many in the agricultural industry doing it tough and this free concert in Clermont is about positive recognition that our communities know they are not alone. “We will continue to support one another and this community event, driven by pure people power, is about letting our landholders know that genuine help is available. This night is about connecting you to the right agency. “Community outreach is so important and there’s a range of assistance programs, subsidies and other relief packages have been announced by the Australian and Queensland governments to assist primary producers and agriculture sector businesses impacted by drought.” The gross value of Isaac agriculture commodities

produced is $549.7 million and $480 million is directly from the Isaac’s robust beef industry. Clermont-based Divisional 6 Councillor Lyn Jones said to celebrate the release of his fourth studio album, the Northern Territory’s Tom Curtain will also bring his award-winning outback show Katherine Outback Experience. Rural Clermont and Glenden Divisional 1 Councillor Greg Austen said Tom’s latest single, We’re Still Here, is inspired by the resilience he witnessed while touring through Queensland during the drought in late 2018, and again after the floods in early 2019 as he drove back to the NT. The We’re Still Here concert, incorporating the Rural Recharge Night, is on this Friday, 6 December, 2019 from 6pm at Clermont Showgrounds. Register for your free ticket at tomcurtain.com.au/tour/ and this will include entry, a free burger and non-alcoholic drink. Bring your own chairs and picnic blankets as well as some cash for food, drinks and merchandise. This is a major fundraiser for Clermont Junior Netball. The event is sponsored by Rural Financial Counselling Service, Isaac Regional Council, Isaac Regional Charity Fund, Clermont Open Cut - Glencore and Terracom. Council, on its public website, provides quick access to Drought Assistance measures through a scrolling banner with linkages to the Federal and State Assistance Programs, seasonal climate information on ‘The Long Paddock’ together with other key mental health, financial and industry agencies.
A ROOMFUL OF STORIES TO RAISE THE ROOF ON IMAGINATION Children and teenagers around the region are set to rave about reading in the ‘off-season’ this school holidays with Isaac Libraries’ Summer Reading Club Program. Featuring a slightly different format to previous years, the program aims to engage even more young readers in 2019 through a 40-day reading challenge with participants able to earn a fun reward for their efforts. The Summer Reading Club Program, created especially for children and young people, is a free program led by State Library of Queensland (SLQ) and run in public libraries across the state. Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker said children aged from four to seventeen years were encouraged to register for the program aimed at inspiring young imaginations and a love of libraries, language and reading. “Reading is an essential skill for everyone, and our libraries are the perfect space to encourage the development of a high level of literacy in young people,” Mayor Baker said. “Stories are everywhere waiting to be discovered and this year’s theme A Roomful of Stories offers young readers an exciting opportunity to discover new characters and worlds within the pages of books.
“Celebrating the International Year of Indigenous Language, this year’s program will also draw attention to the use of spoken language as being central to storytelling and self-expression. Mayor Baker said the Summer Reading Club program runs from 1 December 2019 until 31 January 2020 with participants able to engage with the program online at summerreadingclub.org.au and in local Isaac libraries. “Council’s library staff work hard to provide a fantastic range of age-appropriate, interactive activities and programs to keep young minds engaged, particularly over the longer Summer break,” Mayor Baker said. “I encourage families to come and connect with their local library this school holidays, especially if they haven’t visited before, and be part of the fun, engaging and educational activities that are on offer.” Registration week for the 40-day reading challenge is being held from Monday 2 December to Friday 6 December at all Isaac Libraries however participants can become part of the program at any time. For more information about the Summer Reading Club or what’s on at Isaac libraries this summer, visit www.isaac.qld.gov.au/library-arts-and-culture/ home
COUNCILLOR JONES COLUMN I just do not know where the last fortnight went. Every day seemed to be full with a lot of Christmas functions now well and truly on the go. I managed to see my kids on the weekend and the time once again just flew. I cannot believe my grandson will be turning 17 in a few weeks’ time. My daughter and I took the inland drive from Brisbane to Toowoomba so that I could have a look where the grand daughter had been helping the SES in fighting fires in that area. The devastation was something I had not imagined. My hats off to all those who participate in fighting fires, helping to save people, homes and wildlife. Driving into Toowoomba I could not believe that this was the same City of Flowers of a year ago. Never had I seen the grass so dry and yards without a beautiful garden. Even the air was thick with smoke and dust. It makes you realise just how widespread this drought is and just how cruel Mother Nature can be. This past week has been one of my favourite parts of being a Councillor. I was able to see so many kids transition from primary school to getting ready to go to high school next year. Gosh, it just doesn’t seem so long ago that these children had just started school. The lead up to our Christmas break is full of Council meetings and decisions still needing to be discussed.
I have noticed the lessening of the bats down at the lagoon. Let’s hope they soon say farewell to our community and move on to greener pastures. Fingers crossed. Our lagoon level is really starting to drop. Rain, rain and yet more rain would be welcomed by all at this point. Can people remember when we always had a wet season in the school holidays at Christmas time, and if you went away it was always a bit risky with flooding to get home. Goodness me that was a long time ago. Meanwhile, Axel came up to Montcler with me last week. Not sure if it is all of our lovely residents that he likes to visit or just the absurd amount of cake he consumes while he is there. He just about waddles when we leave. I am fairly certain my craft making is improving. Actually made a candle holder out of old Mills and Boons books that looked like it was what it was supposed to be. Mind you it did take me four goes before I got it right. That’s it for now.
Until next time … Lyn and the sidekick.

October to April is the peak time for natural disasters, exposing our communities and infrastructure to repeated damage from devastating cyclones, floods, fires and other natural disasters. Visit getready.qld.gov.au for tips and factsheets to help you prepare for the upcoming disaster season.
