CLERMONT RAG FRIDAY, 5 APRIL 2019
TRACK OPENS TODAY FOR A BMX-HILARATING RIDE Riders in the Clermont region can make tracks from today as the BMX Track on Collins Street has finished construction and is open to the public for use.
The $445,000 project, co-funded by Isaac Regional Council in partnership with the Queensland Government under the Works for Queensland (W4Q) program, underwent construction from 14 January by contractor BMX Tracks Australia. Mayor Anne Baker said the 400-metre track is a wonderful new asset to Clermont’s sporting precinct. “This is a great effort from the collaboration between the Queensland Government, Council, the Clermont community and the contractor, BMX Tracks Australia,” Mayor Baker said.

“We enjoy bringing projects like the BMX Track to fruition in our region to encourage an active and healthy lifestyle, as well as being able to showcase the great activities that can happen in a regional community.” Mayor Baker is grateful to the W4Q program that allowed Council to deliver on the project. “The Clermont sporting precinct has previously received funding from Works for Queensland to renew our hardcourt facilities, and the track is another great example of how funding like this can benefit a community,” Mayor Baker said. “The BMX Track will revitalise the precinct and promote Clermont as a great place to live, work and play. “The new track also opens the door to sporting tourism, as the quality of the track is able to support state-level BMX events.”

CLERMONT MEN’S SHED contributed by Allan Ufer A few men getting together in a mate’s shed and doing odd jobs and repairs started off the Australian Men’s Organisation. With Aussie get up and go, it slowly expanded to other suburbs, then towns and now it is truly international. The Men’s Shed Association has expanded to Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, New Zealand, Canada, America, Denmark, Sweden, Iceland and Kenya. Don’t think there are too many woodturners working on wood lathes in Iceland! A few guys led by Scott Rathbone brought to life the Clermont Men’s Shed. A generous grant from Clermont Coal helped in establishing the shed. The organisation has now been leasing the old powerhouse in Jellicoe Street for almost 3 years. Under the able leadership of Ken Burns and his Executive committee, the Shed has expanded in terms
Save the date
of equipment and its ability to take on and complete a wide variety of tasks. In the coming weeks I shall attempt to bring news, of some of the things that the Shed does. Better still call down and have a cuppa with us on Mondays, Wednesdays or Saturdays. We are there from 8.30 to midday and take a look for yourself. As long as you are over 16 years of age, either male or female you are most welcome. The purpose of the Men’s Shed: we are a community based, not-for-profit, non commercial organisation accessible to all. We provide a safe, friendly environment where we are able to work on meaningful projects in our own time in the company of others. We aim to promote mental, physical and emotional well-being for the people in our community.

Gallipoli birthed a proud legacy described by correspondent and war historian Charles Bean as follows: “Anzac stood, and still stands, for reckless valour in a good cause, for enterprise, resourcefulness, fidelity, comradeship, and endurance that will never own defeat.” Today that legacy lives on, with the qualities of mateship, courage and sacrifice embodied by those first Anzacs very much defining our national character and what it is to be Australian. We would like to encourage Clermont residents to attend our Anzac Day services on April 25 to pay homage to those who have risked and today still continuing to risk their lives for our freedoms. Lest we forget.
