FESTIVE CONTEST TO LIGHT CREATIVE SPARK Christmas is just around the corner and residents are invited to join in the spirit to light up their community as the Isaac region Christmas Lights competition is announced.

“Many of our wonderful residents and business owners spend a great deal of time and effort creating spectacular light displays that enchant both children and adults alike.

Council is encouraging residents to unpack their Christmas cheer, unravel their lights and get busy creating some festive sparkle with their light displays.

“The annual Christmas Lights competition provides a wonderful opportunity to gather together, meet the neighbours and get involved in your community.”

Mayor Anne Baker said nominations will open for this annual community Christmas tradition on November 12.

Residents wishing to help light up Isaac’s streets can find all the competition details at www.isaac.qld.gov.au/christmaslights.

“The Isaac Christmas Lights Competition will be held in Clermont, the Isaac Coast, Dysart, Glenden, Middlemount, Moranbah and Nebo,” Mayor Baker said.

PUBLIC NOTICES CLERMONT POOL TEMPORARILY CLOSED Isaac Regional Council advises residents Clermont residents of the temporary closure of the Clermont Pool on:

The Clermont Pool will resume normal operating hours on Sunday, November 4.

Council apologises for any inconvenience and thanks residents for their patience.

This temporary closure is due to the Belyando Shield swimming carnival being held.

CAUTION MOTORISTS - CATTLE DROVING ON HUNTLEY ROAD TO GREGORY HIGHWAY, CLERMONT Isaac Regional Council wishes to advise motorists that there are 1,450 head of cattle travelling along Huntley Road to the Gregory Highway, Clermont.

The droving of the cattle commenced in our region on Monday, October 29 and will remain droving Until Monday, November 12.

The drovers have the necessary permits to be able to carry out this droving expedition.

All traffic travelling these roads are advised to be aware of the signage, slow down and take care around the cattle.

CLERMONT WATER RESTRICTIONS NOW LIFTED Due to significant rainfall in the Theresa Creek Dam catchment over the last 24 hours, the dam is overtopping the spillway.

Isaac Regional Council advises Clermont residents all water restrictions has now been lifted in Clermont as of Wednesday, October 31, 2018.

Residents are encouraged to continue to exercise water conservation measures.

PARTIAL TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF CENTENARY PARK, CLERMONT - UPDATE #2 Isaac Regional Council advises that due to the expansion of the flying fox colony the temporary fencing to isolate the roost will be extended from:

Thursday, October 25 Until further notice This means that part of the pathway adjacent to Hoods Lagoon will be partially closed until further notice.

Majority of the park, including the shade structure and toilets, is unaffected by this temporary closure. The roost is away from residential backyards, in the trees on the south bank of Hoods Lagoon (corner of Capella and Lime streets).

Council will continue to monitor the flying fox roost and will provide the community with updates once a course of action is established.

Workers have trimmed some trees in the park to try and discourage more roosting in the area.

Council will monitor and assess the colony and continue discussions with ecologists as to possible management options.

Residents are reminded that it is against the law to harm or disturb a flying fox roost, and unplanned and unauthorised actions can impact on you, your neighbours and your community. Council recommends that residents undertake proactive vegetation management at properties to prevent flying foxes from camping in their backyards. The best way to do this is to trim or remove potential camp trees, commonly mature mango, fig, or poinciana, little red flying foxes can also camp in eucalyptus, palm and other trees.

Council thanks residents for their understanding and apologises for any inconvenience caused.

COUNCIL ADVOCATES FOR RESOURCE REGIONS AT STATE CONFERENCE Isaac region is making the case for change and advocating for a fairer deal for resource communities at the annual conference of Queensland’s councils.

The Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) is the peak representative body for local councils and its members are meeting in Brisbane this week to set the organisation’s policy platform for the forthcoming year.

“In Isaac, we pride ourselves on being a region driven by pure people power and, this week, we are bringing that message to the LGAQ conference. We want to capitalise on the people power created by a collective voice speaking for all local councils,” Mayor Anne Baker said.

Heading Isaac region’s advocacy agenda is a call to review government funding arrangements for regional communities that host large non-resident workforces.

Mayor Baker said present funding methodologies did not take account of non-resident populations, such as fly-in/fly-out workers, and change was needed to recognise both the resident and serviced population in regional communities.

“Present funding models place affected communities in a position of greater disadvantage and this needs to be addressed if we want sustainable regional resource communities. This is fundamentally an issue of fairness and equity,” she said.

“Failing to acknowledge the additional strain on government services and facilities in regional

and remote communities created by large non-resident populations means these are not adequately and equitably funded to support total population demand.”

Isaac region is also calling for the State Government to engage more closely with local councils before altering the eligibility criteria for future funding under the Building our Regions (BoR) program.

“The BoR program is funded, in part, by royalties generated from the resource sector. Mines in the Isaac region contribute $1.5 billion in royalties to the State, so this is about returning a portion of these revenues to provide important infrastructure for industry and the resource communities which support the sector,” Mayor Baker said.

“As a result of changes to BoR eligibility criteria, made with limited consultation with affected councils, Isaac region has been unable to obtain funding assistance for important projects which are required as a direct result of increased activity in the mining sector.

“This included a proposed expansion of our landfill facility in Dysart, which takes 70% of its waste from the resources sector. We need long-term certainty to ensure we can adequately plan for and fund the future infrastructure required to support major mining and energy projects.”

Isaac region is also powering up a campaign for legislative change to permit the use of private generators around the clock during disaster situations.

CR LYN’S COLUMN I’m penning this column on a Sunday; I know this because Axel had his bacon, pancakes and maple syrup this morning.

Yes, I know it sounds a bit over the top but he has been having this on and off for almost three years now and I know he would think that his throat had been cut if we stopped his Sunday treat. Enough about Axel.

I attended the Senior Citizens Cent Sale last week, sadly only a few of the Montcler residents came along but we still had a lovely time and I won a few prizes to pass out to those who could not attend.

Friday saw nearly all the residents go down to Penny’s Cafe for morning tea. Once again many thanks to Penny and her staff for making us all feel so welcome and accommodating to all of our requests.

You don’t realise what a big job it is for Jules to transport our ressies (making several trips) until you get in there and help. This is where the people who volunteer their time make such a difference in some peoples’ lives.

Last Tuesday and Wednesday saw me in Moranbah attending meetings and workshops, and, by the time you read this, Clermont will have hosted its annual Beef Expo on 31 October.

You can’t tell me that the last 12 months haven’t flown by. It really seems like no time has passed since the last time I was there and had a great breakfast.

I am hoping to get over to Mackay some time this week to spend some time with Mother Huston. We usually go shopping and have lunch out but mainly we just talk.

I certainly have missed her since she shifted to Mackay That’s about all for now.

THANK YOU CLERMONT - A FANTASTIC RESPONSE TO SENIORS LIVING SURVEY CONTRIBUTED BY BELYANDO ENTERPRISE NETWORK INC

The Belyando Enterprise Network (BENI) would like to express gratitude to the community for becoming involved and taking an active part in the Seniors Living Survey.

BENI, a Clermont based not for profit organisation, facilitated a series of community briefings, drop-in sessions and a community survey.

BENI President, John Burnett challenged the BENI committee to receive 100 survey responses.

The community response exceeded expectations with a total of 158 surveys received!

“Quite impressive, but not at all surprising for our small but vibrant community,” John commented.

Congratulations to the winner of the $100 Beales IGA voucher - Julia and Peter Anderson.

The purpose of the survey was to better understand the opinions and drivers of the Clermont Community with regard to senior lifestyle and retirement options.

Wall Planning & Environmental Consulting is in the process of finalising the survey results.

The survey included 10 questions. A summary of the key findings is highlighted below: • The majority of respondents (78%) would be extremely likely, very likely or likely to stay in Clermont if suitable retirement options are available.

•

The main reasons people would like to stay in Clermont are:

1. Friends and family

2. Home town

3. Community, and

4. Lifestyle.

Responses also indicate a concern about access to services for the elderly and ageing families in Clermont.

• 77% of respondents stated a quality residential development for seniors would increase the likelihood of them staying in Clermont when they retire.

• The essential aspects for a successful seniors development, in order of priority are:

1. Access to medical services (87%).

2. Support for independence (67%), and

3. Close to town/ walking distance of amenities (61%).

Better medical support and safer access for the elderly, with more transport options would make Clermont a more attractive retirement hub.

• The majority of respondents (71%) are interested in the concept of what was described in the survey as a Virtual Village. This is simply an idea to connect the seniors within our community with its services, clubs and facilities – ‘Clermont Community Connect’.

• Approximately 50 people would like to be involved in a Focus Group.

Next steps To keep up the momentum and to continue the discussion within the community, BENI is actively working towards the next stage of this process, with Focus Group sessions planned for November.

If you volunteered to be part of a Focus Group when you completed a survey, you will be contacted by Wall Planning & Environmental Consulting in the next couple of weeks.

We’re investing in creative and cultural experiences through the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) which strengthens regional communities, boosts cultural tourism, and enhances the quality of life in rural and remote towns and cities.

RADF is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Isaac Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.

We’re encouraging Isaac residents to help celebrate the pure people power which drives the communities of the region by nominating a local champion, quiet achiever or unsung hero for a 2019 Australia Day Award.

The Isaac Region Australia Day Awards comprise the regional awards of Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Event of the Year, and local medallions presented to individuals and groups in each community for sport, culture/arts and achievement.

Head to Council’s website for more details, or to nominate a deserving local today. Forms are also available at Council offices. Nominations for the annual community awards will close on Friday, December 7.

The WiFi has received a Smarty Grant to been installed and is now up update the technology and running. services available at the CCBG office. This would give community members Sharon Jansen making good and visiting business use of the Wifi at the CCBG services access to free office.

Smiling for Smiddy The Smiling for Smiddy cycle team once again made their way to Clermont on 29 August on a 1600km journey from Brisbane to Townsville to raise money for Cancer Research. This year they have raised $215,000.

Clermont coal once again sponsored a dinner for the riders, their crew and Clermont community members who billet the riders for their night in Clermont.

Smiling for Smiddy morning tea On 29 August we held a special morning tea in support of the Smiling for Smiddy cyclists and managed to raise $425.55 for this important event.

Battle of the mines The Battle of the mines was once again hosted by the Clermont Bears on a hot Saturday in September.

There was a good turnout of teams and spectators, and thanks to the Junior and Senior clubs for the great food and drinks. A first this year is that the games were streamed live for those who couldn’t be there to watch. Competition was tough with the men’s competition being taken out by the Oakey Creek Gladiators and the ladies competition by the Clermont Huntresses. Congratulations to all those involved!

Artslink Peace poles The Clermont Artslink peace poles were officially unveiled on 21 September in Pioneer Park. Look out for theses poles as you wander around Hoods Lagoon. Thirty poles were decorated and sponsored by various community organisations and then planted all around the park. Make sure you look out for the pole sponsored

by Clermont Coal.

UNLEASH YOUR CREATIVITY Have you ever wanted to take up pastel drawing, dabbling in watercolour or painting in oils?

The Clermont Library has a range of books on pastel drawing, painting in watercolours, acrylics and oils, pointers on drawing flowers and trees and more.

If painting and drawing is not you’re thing, there’s also books on woodcraft, mosaics, sewing, embroidery, textile art and unusual craft such as Temari (Japanese ball embroidery).

OPEN UP THE STORY BOX LIBRARY The Story Box Library is an e-resource offered by the Isaac Libraries through the Council’s website.

The Story Box Library is full of favourite stories for children read by Australia’s best storytellers.

Children can read a picture book on line while listening to the author.

You can browse by storyteller or author/illustrator and watch short films to meet the author behind many of the books in the Story Box Library.

Library patrons can have free at-home access to the Story Box Library through the Public Library/Tertiary link on the Story Box Library website.

Patrons will need to create an account and log-in, using their library card number.

SPOTLIGHT ON TRENT DALTON Trent Dalton is an award-winning journalist who writes for The Weekend Australian Magazine.

His debut fiction novel Boy Swallows Universe was published in 2018.

Dalton was inspired to write Boy Swallows Universe while celebrating Christmas with family on Bribie Island a few years ago.

Dalton’s tough childhood was also an inspiration for writing Boy Swallows Universe.

Under 13’s all out for 119 in the 24th over defeated Brothers White all out for 115 in the 22nd over.

Best with the bat was Clayton M with nineteen runs, including his first 6. Clayton L and Aidan H also batted well. Clayton L, Darcie M and Landon W each took 2 wickets.

Brilliant catch by Harvey saved the match. What a great game.

CLERMONT TENNIS NEWS A social tennis night will be held this Saturday, November 3 commencing at 5pm.

The night is open to anyone in the community who may like to come along and have a game or two and a great night out.

We intend to have a sausage sizzle on the night with BYO drinks, if you wish to do so. Soft drinks will be on sale.

GUT AND BUTT BLAST: is a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane, simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps.

Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level.

METAPWR: is a fast moving circuit, using moves that need strength, speed and power. All MetaPWR workouts use the entire body, involving your upper and lower body and core muscles.

Muscle is metabolically active tissue, so the more muscles you work the more calories you burn.

The more calories you burn, the more productive your workouts will be and the faster you will lose fat.

LET’S LIFT: this program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45 minutes whole body workout.

This is achieved through the use of barbell and dumbbell weights.

This class is suitable for all fitness levels.

CIRCUIT TRAINING: this is a form of body conditioning or resistance training using high-intensity/low-intensity aerobic energy. It targets strength building and muscular endurance.

An exercise ‘circuit’ is one completion of all prescribed exercises in the program.

It is highly enjoyable and recommended to all levels of fitness.

METAFIT: this is a 30 minutes bodyweight training system that gets results! It is a functional and effective, metabolic workout that will change the way you train.

Created by a former Royal Marine Commando, Metafit combines the latest HIIT techniques with traditional ‘old school’ bodyweight exercises to set the metabolism on fire.

FIGHT CLUB JIU JITSU Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a martial art specialising in submission grappling. It is a non-striking sport that promotes fitness, self-confidence, respect, flexibility and teaches self defence strategies.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes have now started for Adults and Kids (8+).

Both Gi and no-Gi classes are being offered.

STRETCH CLASS Improve the flexibility of your joints and muscles with our stretch classes. Stretching is a vital component in any fitness regime, whether you’re a fitness newbie or a professional level athlete, it can boost the effectiveness of your workout routine.

THUMP A 1 hour boxing for fitness class, boxing equipment is provided (gloved, focus pads, kick shields, etc). Inners must be work, these can be purchased from reception for $5 previous to beginning the session.

VIRTUAL RIP A high intensity strength conditioning class using barbell and light dumbbell weights. 45 minutes – 1 hour in duration.

VIRTUAL CYCLE CHALLENGE Revolution by group Rx is a cycling program that brings the outdoor ride – inside. Interval bases cadence training takes your classes through sprints, hill and mountains, to achieve results and personal goals.

Revolution is a 60-minute cycling program tailor-made for anyone who can ride a bike. This class is capped at 10 participants.

KANGA TRAINING Kanga training is a complete workout during which both cardiovascular endurance/flexibility and muscular capacity/strength are enhanced. Unlike traditional exercise classes, new mums need not worry about finding a babysitter or minding an unsettled baby during class because the babies are worn on them and get to be part of the action!
