ISAAC CELEBRATES ITS COMMUNITY CHAMPIONS Isaac region celebrated its quiet achievers, unsung heroes and local champions at Australia Day events held across its communities. Award ceremonies and community gatherings were held throughout the region in Moranbah, Clermont, St Lawrence, Carmila, Middlemount and Dysart, with Glenden hosting a joint celebration with Nebo.

Australia Day Award categories included the regionwide Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Community Event of the Year, in addition to community based Achievement Medallions for groups and individuals in the fields of achievement, culture and sport, as well as a Mayor’s Award. Local philanthropist Beryl Neilsen was honoured with the region’s Citizen of the Year award, selected from a field of 27 nominees.

Mayor Anne Baker said the annual Australia Day Awards were an important recognition of those individuals and groups who had contributed to the civic, social, cultural and sporting fabric of the region.

“Beryl is a true champion of the bush, working tirelessly to advocate for and provide educational opportunities to rural and regional children,” Mayor Baker said.

“Isaac is resource rich from coal to cattle, but we are also blessed with the greatest resource of all, our pure people power,” Mayor Baker said.

“In 2011, she founded the John and Beryl Neilsen Winchester Foundation which funds scholarships for geographically remote children, allowing them to attain a secondary and tertiary education or study a trade.

“Australia Day is an opportunity to bring our residents together across our many towns to celebrate the people power which drives our communities and makes them thrive.”

Community Event of the Year was awarded to Queensland Music Festival – The Power Within, selected from a field of 13 nominees.

Young Citizen of the Year was awarded to university student and community volunteer Caitlin Petersen from Carmila, who was among 11 nominees for the award.

“Approximately 280 community members from across the Isaac region came together to create and perform The Power Within. Participants of all ages were drawn together from Clermont, Nebo, Middlemount, Dysart, Glenden and Moranbah,” Mayor Baker said.

“Caitlin is a past Isaac Region Youth Ambassador and is actively involved in her local community through sporting and service clubs, as well as campus life at her university,” Mayor Baker said. “She has also achieved her Bronze, Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards and is a Diamond Jubilee recipient. “Among her many achievements, she represented Australia as a delegate to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Marrakech, Morocco, working with participants and stakeholder groups to produce and present recommendations to the United Nations for consideration.”

“Over a nine-month period, community members worked with a team of professional creatives to develop this project, which culminated in two twilight performances on 28 and 29 July, as part of the 2017 Queensland Music Festival. “Behind the scenes, there were many stories of individuals who went above and beyond to be part of this production, overcoming personal adversity, and dedicating untold hours in the preparation.” “Given the scale of this event, the Community Event of the Year award was presented to representatives in each of the participating communities and will be displayed in local libraries.”

Shane Webcke is coming to Clermont

Elders Clermont is excited to announce that on the 24th of February 2018 Shane Webcke will be coming to Clermont as a Guest Speaker at the Elders ‘Give It’ Charity Gala – Proudly supporting beyondblue. Shane is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer, he represented Queensland on twenty-four occasions and represented Australia in twenty-six tests. In that time, he spent his entire top-grade career of 12 years playing for the Brisbane Broncos and was named Daly M Prop of the year three times. Since retiring from a career in rugby league, he now spends his time as a farmer, family man, businessman, author, news presenter, safety ambassador, guest speaker and host. Shane has kindly donated his time to attend our Charity Gala to share his story and together with the Isaac community help raise awareness for rural mental health. Shane draws upon his experience in football, family life, public life and career after football to deliver a grounded message woven with a few tales and a bit of humour. This will be his only public appearance in town, for the chance to meet and hear from Shane please insure you book your tickets soon to the Elders ‘Give It’ Charity Gala as numbers are limited. During Library Lovers Month, readers will pick a wrapped book from the library shelf for borrowing as well as staff sharing the love with chocolate giveaways. Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker said it’s time to love your local library. “Whether it‘s at Clermont, Dysart, Middlemount, Glenden, St Lawrence, Carmila, Nebo or Moranbah library, there’s plenty of reasons to discover and love your local library,” Mayor Baker said. “If it’s been awhile since you’ve visited, February is the perfect month to reconnect.” Mayor Baker said Blind Date with a Book is back by popular demand. “Staff have been randomly selecting books this week, wrapping them ready for the February 1-28 celebrations,” Mayor Baker said. “They are picked from across all genres of fiction– romance, thrillers, adventure, crime – with maybe a couple of true tales - who knows what you’ll get. “So take a lucky dip and save the surprise for when you get home, you never know what exciting new title you may discover. “Our library staff will also share the love with weekly chocolate giveaways.

FEBRUARY IS FOR LIBRARY LOVERS February is a month for romancing and Isaac Libraries will celebrate Library Lovers Month in many ways.

SPOTLIGHT ON AUTHOR - MEREDITH WEBBER

Patrons will be encouraged to have a blind date with a book.

Meredith Webber is an Australian writer of contemporary romance and has published more than 50 books.

A selection of books will be wrapped and placed on shelves for borrowing and those who borrow them will not know what the book is until it is unwrapped.

Prior to becoming a writer she worked as a teacher, travel agent, pigh farmer and co-ordinator of a respite care service.

Patrons who borrow ‘blind date’ books will be gifted a heart shaped chocolate (until supplies run out).

Webber began writing medical romances in 1992 and gave herself 2 years to become published. She sold a novel within the first year.

From February 14, adult patrons who borrow adult literature will also be gifted with a chocolate (until supplies run out). Adult patrons who borrow adult literature between February 1 to February 28 will go into the weekly draw to win a box of chocolates.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN STORYTIME Storytime is held on Friday mornings from 9.30am to 10.30am and during February will be celebrating the Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day during February. BABY BOUNCE, STORYTIME, CRAFT AND RHYMETIME The Clermont Library runs several weekly children’s sessions. They are a good way to connect with other parents with young children. RHYMETIME AND CRAFT This is held from 9.30am to 10am every Tuesday for children up to five years old, where they can sing and dance to nursery rhyme songs. BABY BOUNCE Come along on Thursday from 9.30am to 10am and is aimed at children aged up to two years. Baby Bounce is a chance for parents to interact with their child through movement, music and song. GUT AND BUTT BLAST: Is a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane, simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps. This will increase fat metabolism at rest and help slim and tone those problematic areas. Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level. OPEN GYM: This is your opportunity to use the gym facilities, there will be a basic weights program and WOD on offer for your utilisation, or you could just be creative and do your own training. LETS LIFT: This program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45 minutes whole body workout. This is achieved through the use of barbell and dumbbell weights. This class is suitable for all fitness levels.

PROGRAM METAPWR: MetaPWR is a fast moving circuit, using moves that need strength, speed and power. All MetaPWR workouts use the entire body,involving your upper and lower body and core muscles. Muscle is metabolically active tissue, so the more muscles you work the more calories you burn. The more calories you burn, the more productive your workouts will be and the faster you will lose fat. CIRCUIT TRAINING: This is a form of body conditioning or resistance training using highintensity/low-intensity aerobic energy. It targets strength building and muscular endurance. An exercise ‘circuit’ is one completion of all prescribed exercises in the program. It is highly enjoyable and recommended to all levels of fitness. METAFIT: This is a 30 minutes bodyweight training system that gets results! It is a functional and effective, metabolic workout that will change the way you train. Created by a former Royal Marine Commando, Metafit combines the latest HIIT techniques with traditional ‘old school’ bodyweight exercises to set the metabolism on fire.
