A MONTH-LONG CELEBRATION FOR OUR SPRITELY SENIORS For the first time ever the week-long celebration of the wonderful role seniors play in our community will go for a month during October. From seated yoga, trivia, luncheons and even a movie matinee, there’s something for all ages in Carmila, Clermont, Dysart, Glenden, Middlemount, Moranbah and Nebo this Queensland Seniors Month. Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker said the month-long celebrations is a chance for all residents to recognise the knowledge, experience and value older Isaac residents bring to the region. “I encourage all Isaac residents, regardless of their age, to take part in this year’s Queensland Seniors Month and enjoy the wonderful program of events and activities that make up this important celebration,” she said. “This year it is all about making social connections. The last couple of years have been a trying time for all, and connections with each are more important than ever.”
Mayor Baker said the large roster of events wouldn’t happen without the help and support of community groups and volunteers across the region. “A big thank you goes out to those organisations and groups that have helped pull together so many of the events and activities. “Your support is appreciated and recognised. I would also like to recognise some of the events have been supported by additional funds from the Council on the Aging (COTA). “Don’t miss out on attending any of the 15 free events this Seniors Month.” MONTH-LONG Free entry to the Clermont Historical Centre and the Historic Nebo Museum All entrants who show a Seniors Card and have proof of Isaac residency will be granted free entry.

RATES DUE 27 OCTOBER – PAY EARLY AND RECEIVE A 10% DISCOUNT ON GENERAL RATES Keep an eye on your letterbox with rates notices set to arrive from Monday, 27 September 2021. Prompt payment of rates will secure a 10 per cent discount on general rates, if paid before Wednesday, 27 October 2021. The 10 per cent discount applies to general rates, and excludes all utility, special rates and charges, provided outstanding amounts and overdue rates and interest are paid in full by the due date. Ratepayers who have encountered delays with the postal service in their area can register their email address with Council for an additional rates notice to be issued electronically. If you have recently moved or changed your contact details, please check that you have informed Council to ensure delivery of rates notices on time. Council stood up last year in the face of COVID-19 uncertainty and froze rates and levies for residential and rural ratepayers while
continuing to support the local economy through tough economic times. Significant work has been done to keep the overall rates increase for 2021/22 to 2.4%, following on from the rates freeze for residential and rural properties last year. Council have reduced the cent in the dollar for general rates to offset some big increases to land values, in particular agricultural land values, as a result of Queensland Government land valuations. WHEN FLOWER SHOWS BLOOMED September was a busy time for Clermont gardeners in the past. The month heralded the arrival of spring and the garden coming to life with a blaze of colourful flowers. Vegetable gardens yielded bumper crops of carrots, cabbages, zucchinis and other vegies while citrus trees bore an abundance of fruit. September was also a time for gardeners to prepare for the annual flower shows. There were two Flower Shows held every year in Clermont for many decades and both were big social events. The Clermont Methodist Church (which became the Clermont Uniting Church) and the All Saints Anglican Church both hosted an annual Flower Show. The Flower Shows were first held at different times of the year to each other but by the 1970s, both Flower Shows were held a couple of weeks apart in September. The Flower Shows always attracted an abundance of entries of blooms in all sorts of varieties and colours. Everyone hoped their entry would take the ‘blue ribbon’ and many fingers were crossed for winning Champion Rose or Grand Champion Flower of the Show. The Flower Shows weren’t just about flowers as there were competitive sections for fruit and vegetables, cookery, jams and preserves, sewing, art and handicrafts. Fashion parades of the latest trends in clothing or the modelling of bridal gowns from the past were popular crowd entertainers. Cake stalls laden with delicious homemade cakes, biscuits and slices were a sell out and the sweet stall with its toffee apples, French jellies, coconut ice, fudge and Russian caramels were irresistible, especially to children.
The All Saints Anglican Church held the first Flower Show in Clermont on 16 October, 1908. The crowd was pleasantly surprised at the beautiful display of flowers despite the adverse season. Word War II could not stop the All Saint’s Anglican Church from holding its annual Flower Show. In 2007, the All Saint’s Anglican Church and Clermont community celebrated the centenary of the Anglican Flower Show. It was the final time the Anglican Flower Show was held in Clermont. The first Clermont Methodist Church Flower Show was held in 1923 and when the Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregationalist churches amalgamated in 1977 to form the Uniting Church of Australia, the new Clermont Uniting Church carried on the tradition of the Methodist Flower Show. A highlight of the annual Methodist/Uniting Church Flower Show was the Baby Show and there were always many entrants ranging from newborns to toddlers. This always presented the judges with a difficult choice of declaring which cute baby or darling toddler was the champion of their category. The Champion Boy and Girl of every category each received a small silver cup. The Uniting Church Flower Show continued to be held into the late 1980s. Clermont’s Flower Shows are another tradition that are now only memories.

ON THIS DAY... 60 YEARS AGO Friday, 6 October 1961 Tree Threatens Town’s Water Supply An 80-foot burning gum tree threated Clermont’s water supply. A grass fire that broke out on ‘The Flat’ during the weekend and set a towering gum tree alight. The tree stood next to the transmission line supplying power for the pumps of the Clermont Water Undertaking Wells, from which the town’s water supply was drawn. It was feared the tree would fall on powerlines and subsequently damage the pumps’ motors if they were working at the time. The pumps were stopped, and destruction of the burning tree was sped up so the pumps could be turned back on.
Towlines were attached to the still-burning gum tree a few days later to pull it away from power lines but in the process, the tree’s trunk split, and a lengthy portion of the tree crashed through a section of the powerline. Local CREB (Capricornia Regional Electricity Board) swiftly carried out urgent repair work on the line.
