ISAAC LIBRARIES ROBOTICS CHALLENGE PROGRAM - MENTORS WANTED Isaac Libraries are seeking expressions of interest for volunteers to offer their services as mentors for the Robotics Challenge Program.

Do you work in the engineering, IT or science? Do you have a great interest in coding and robotics?

You could be a Robotics Challenge Program Mentor.

Team Mentors will work with Isaac Libraries staff to guide and assist teams of up to 10 children.

working robots, to solve problems and complete challenges. Teams will be based in Clermont, Dysart, Glenden, Middlemount and Moranbah.

The program will run from June 18 to September 7.

At the end of the 10 week-program, all teams will come face to face at the Isaac Libraries Tech Fest on September 8 with a location to be advised.

VALUED EMPLOYEE RETIRES AFTER 25 YEARS contributed by Clermont State High School

On May 19 Education Queensland lost a valued employee with Lorraine O’Shannessy deciding to retire after 25 years at Clermont State High School.

Lorraine it has been an honour working with you these past years. We wish you the best of luck and out thanks for all that you have done at Clermont State High School. Enjoy working with Ian and those cows!

Lorraine, a remarkable colleague and friend, began work at Clermont State High School on November 1, 1993.

When Lorraine started as an Administrative Assistant, the Principal was Mr Graham Hansen and Mrs Mary Vagg was the Administrative Officer.

Lorraine’s role was in the finance department where all financial information was done manually before Formula came into effect.

After Formula, came SIMS which was finance and students information and finally One School. Lorraine has seen the changes through all these systems and has been a wealth of knowledge for all staff.

In 1999 the current Administrative Office was built.

What a change this was from a small back room that she and Genevieve Purdie, along with Vicki Holmes and Marie Austen occupied.

While Lorraine was kept busy with her official job at the school, she was also the owner/driver of the Rubyvale Road bus school run from 1985 to 2005.

Driving students to school every day and seeing them grow and become young adults was something Lorraine enjoyed throughout her 20 years on the bus run.

A highlight for Lorraine was being able to work with her daughter, Wendy in the office. Lorraine and Wendy were a great team and worked together for many years.

During her 25 years, Lorraine saw around 11 Principals and 6 Business Managers come and go.

During this time she was always professional, dedicated, cheerful, productive, industrious, honest, reliable, loyal, organised and caring member of the school team.

Lorraine will be sorely missed.

Michelle Boyes came to rely on Lorraine for her organisation, thoughtful and caring ways as she was always ready to help whenever required. Lorraine would help her by keeping her informed, whether it was phone numbers or copies of where sports lines were to go or upcoming events.

Michelle especially enjoyed spending morning tea breaks with Lorraine as they became great friends often sharing jokes about Michelle’s organisational skills, but with the deeper understanding that they genuinely cared about each others wellbeing.

Messages from past and present staff members A wonderful colleague and friend, so wise and absolutely unflappable, Lorraine was a crucial member of our Administration team at Clermont SHS. Her calm presence in the office, handling student, parent and teacher enquiries along with the management of school and student data, contributed enormously to the smooth operation of the school.

Lorraine’s wicked sense of humour ensured that not a day passed without a good laugh. She has that wonderful knack of injecting a bit of perspective and levity when it is most needed. Those of us, who have been fortunate enough to come into Lorraine’s orbit, should know that when we leave we exit a better person.

Kim Wood Teacher, Acting Principal and Deputy Principal 1987 – 2012 I was fortunate to work with Lorraine at Clermont SHS for most of the two decades I was there teaching.

These years were some of the happiest of my career to date and although that is a lot to do with the students I encountered, it was also because of the people with whom I worked. Lorraine was a constant.

Always cheerful, incredibly reliable and a true professional in her many and varied roles. Not much flustered her at school (even after her morning bus run was completed year after year). Schools and their success are built upon people like her who quietly and diligently go about their day. I wish her every happiness in the future.

Lorraine was a kind face in the office. She was always approachable and obliging, even when I was asking for work to be photocopied 5 minutes before I required it! Hello, would almost certainly become a drawn out chat about life.

Rowena Thurgood Teacher and Guidance Officer 2007 – 2016 Lorraine has always been the heart of the office.

I knew if I needed to know something that Lorraine would be able to point me in the right direction.

I have never heard Lorraine say a bad word about anyone in all the time that she worked at Clermont State High School. It has been an honour to work with you these past 20 odd years, thank you for your help, kindness and friendship.

Working with Lorraine was always a pleasure, and we shared many a laughter during the 19 years I worked with her. Many changes were implemented over those years, and although some took a little longer than others, Lorraine always mastered whatever was thrown at her. With her local knowledge, Lorraine became invaluable to new and old staff alike. The school will certainly miss your knowledge and I wish you all the best on your retirement, Lorraine.

PUBLIC NOTICES 1080 WILD DOG AND FERAL PIG BAITING PROGRAM 2018 Isaac Regional Council would like to advise all graziers that a second round of baiting will be conducted during the period below to provide landholders with an opportunity to undertake further control of wild dog and feral pig populations.

Currently this baiting period is scheduled for the dates below:

Monday August 27 to Friday September 21 Manufactured baits are available outside of these times, orders must be made in advance and delivery is approximately three weeks from order date.

Manufactured baits are supplied ‘at cost’ and are available for purchase through Council.

FREE GREEN MULCH TRIAL CLERMONT WASTE MANAGEMENT FACILITY Isaac Regional Council advises that residents will be able to access free green waste mulch for their gardens from the Clermont Waste Management Facility on:

The last Sunday of each month starting from Sunday April 29 between 9am to 1pm Residents will be entitled to two cubic metres of free mulch until 30 June 2018 or until the stockpiles are exhausted.

The trial will assist in reducing the amount of waste going to landfill through the recycling of green waste as quality mulch. The use of mulch as a conservation tool to reduce evaporation and to hamper underlying weed growth is widely accepted.

For safety purposes, the mulch will need to be loaded by a Council-operated loader and not manually by hand, so customers will require a suitable utility or trailer for collection. Any children or animals accompanying a customer collecting mulch must remain within the vehicle at all times.

It is also a requirement that the load be fully secured and covered by a tarpaulin or similar before departing the site.

Customers will have to show they have a suitable cover before loading commences.

Customers wishing to collect free mulch will be required to accept the full terms and conditions of the green mulch trial at the Waste Management Facility Gatehouse prior to the commencement of the loading process.

CLASS OF THE WEEK - 3/4A

HICKORY DICKORY DASH BRINGS CHILDREN TOGETHER It was cat and mouse mind games at Clermont Library when children came together for National Simultaneous Storytime.

Organised by the Australian Library and Information Associaiton, this year was the 18th year of National Simultaneous Storytime with Hickory Dickory Dash written by Tony Wilson, illustrated by Laura Wood and published by Scholastic Australia as the chosen book.

The event was a colourful, vibrant and fun event that aimed to promote the value of reading and literacy and also provided the opportunity for parents and grandparents to enjoy the occasion along with the children.

CELEBRATING QUEENSLAND DAY Clermont Library will host a morning tea on Wednesday, June 6, starting from 10.30am to celebrate Queensland Day. Queensland Day is held on June 6 to commemorate the official separation from New South Wales as an independent colony on June 6, 1859.

Queensland Day is also a celebration of ‘everything Queensland’ from the Mighty Maroons to pineapples.

Spineout is for young adults to express their ideas and thoughts and to share their creativity in words, art, film or music.

Spineout publishes poetry and short stories written by young adults.

GUT AND BUTT BLAST: Is a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane, simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps.

This will increase fat metabolism at rest and help slim and tone those problematic areas.

Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level.

OPEN GYM: This is your opportunity to use the gym facilities, there will be a basic weights program and WOD on offer for your utilisation, or you could just be creative and do your own training.

LETS LIFT: This program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45 minutes whole body workout.

This is achieved through the use of barbell and dumbbell weights.

This class is suitable for all fitness levels.

METAPWR: MetaPWR is a fast moving circuit, using moves that need strength, speed and power.

All MetaPWR workouts use the entire body,involving your upper and lower body and core muscles.

Muscle is metabolically active tissue, so the more muscles you work the more calories you burn.

The more calories you burn, the more productive your workouts will be and the faster you will lose fat.

CIRCUIT TRAINING: This is a form of body conditioning or resistance training using highintensity/low-intensity aerobic energy. It targets strength building and muscular endurance.

An exercise ‘circuit’ is one completion of all prescribed exercises in the program.

It is highly enjoyable and recommended to all levels of fitness.

METAFIT: This is a 30 minutes bodyweight training system that gets results! It is a functional and effective, metabolic workout that will change the way you train.

Created by a former Royal Marine Commando, Metafit combines the latest HIIT techniques with traditional ‘old school’ bodyweight exercises to set the metabolism on fire.
