Mayor says communities’ fight for a future in hand of Bill The future of resource communities is in the hands of the Strong and Sustainable Resource Communities Bill 2016 according to the Mayor of the largest mining region in Queensland. Mayor Baker said Council fundamentally supports the intent of the Bill. “When we read the objective of the Bill we were genuinely moved. “We felt for the first time in a long time that the state government and our communities were on the same page.” “As I said at the public hearing, we cannot continue to remove choice and divide families and communities. “The objective of this Bill, ‘to ensure that residents of communities in the vicinity of large resource projects benefit from the operation of those projects’, was and remains very encouraging for us. Mayor Anne Baker said she acknowledges the Queensland Government’s commitment to regulating mining projects and improving the Bill. Mayor Anne Baker said it’s encouraging that the voices of regional resource communities were reflected in a Committee report tabled this week examining the Bill.
“Council’s submission and participation in the public hearings provided practical and meaningful ways the Bill should be strengthened to get the job done which has been clearly documented in this report.
“It’s a clear demonstration of what can be achieved when Council and community refuse to give up until they’re heard.
“Council looks forward to seeing the Bill progress through Parliament.”
“The penny has dropped - what we’ve known and understood to be the reality on the ground for many years, and our fight for a future, was listened to, acknowledged and recognized in this report.” The Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources Committee Report Strong and Sustainable Resource Communities Bill 2016 was tabled in Parliament this week.

Isaac winner loves local Moranbah local Owen Thompson has an extra $100 in his back pocket for ‘loving local’.
“For the remaining 11 months we’ll be drawing $100 vouchers at six locations across the region. “To enter just spend $20 or more in a participating Love Your Local business in Isaac, fill in an entry form, attaching your receipt of purchase and drop it in to one of our collection points around the region. “Monthly winners will be able to spend their vouchers at participating businesses, so it’s a win-win. Mayor Baker congratulates Owen Thompson, winnder of Isaas Regional Counicl’s local spending habits survey as part of the Love Your Local campaign.
During February, Isaac Regional Council encouraged residents to take part in a survey on their local spending habits.
“Business registration is free, with participating businesses receiving monthly promotional packs and incentives for locals to shop in-store. “I encourage everyone to show their support and get involved in the Love Your Local competition.
From the 227 survey entrants, Thompson was drawn as the lucky winner of a $100 voucher to spend in Isaac.
“If we each spend just $5 extra per week, we generate $8 million and create nine new job opportunities in Isaac per year*.”
Mayor Anne Baker said information gathered in the survey will contribute to Council’s long term economic development program.
The Love Your Local Campaign is proudly supported by funding through Isaac Regional Council and the Local Buying Foundation.
“The survey was the perfect lead into Council’s Love Your Local competition,” she said.

Gold and Coal Festival 2017 - cancelled contributed by Danny McKay
Unfortunately due to a lack of numbers at the Gold and Coal Festival meeting held on Tuesday March 7, we were unable to form a Committee to run the 2017 Gold and Coal Festival and as a result the Festival is cancelled. We will call for a Committee early in 2018 with the hope of running the Festival in 2018. It may become a 2 yearly event. The Festival has served as a valuable platform for several events over the years including the Q150, 100 years of settlement in Clermont and the 100 year Flood Remembrance, all of which were remarkable events of which the Committees were immensely proud. I do think that the Gold and Coal Festival has a place in our Community to help with Tourism and to promote and celebrate our rich history in mining and agriculture.
I would to thank our Committee members both past and present for their efforts over the years and hope a new Committee can be formed for next year to continue this event. I would also like to thank the Clermont Community and Businesses for its enormous support over the years. The Gold and Coal Festival Committee will still host the Senior Citizens Christmas luncheon early December 2017. We live in a great community, be proud and give your support. Many thanks Danny McKay.

How good does the skate park cover look? Not only will it be used more often but it’s good to know that the kids are sun safe. March markets went off well with plenty of stalls and a lot of variety. Our hard courts got a boost of funding which will see the tennis, basketball and netball have their surfaces repaired or recovered. No more losing the balls in the cracks. More than 450 bids to energise Isaac More than 450 bids were submitted in the latest round of Isaac Regional Council Community Budget Bids. Mayor Anne Baker thanked the community for their contributions to the 2017-18 Budget. “I’m proud of our communities for taking the time to lodge submissions,” she said. “This is their opportunity to let us know where they think funds are most needed. “Of the more than 450 submissions, there were 64 unique bids. “Suggestions include upgrades to showgrounds, various community halls, sporting facilities, roads, parks and more.
“While we can’t guarantee all bids will be successful, your valuable feedback will help Council prioritise projects using the available funds. “Council is working hard for ratepayers and residents to deliver a financially sustainable budget. “Your ideas may contribute to Isaac’s future long-term planning.” Council also provides help to community groups and organisations through its Community Grants Program. Round 4 of Major Grants is open now, with applications closing April 15.

Fuzzbook contributed by The Sarge First off on a personal note. A lot of people have asked after my lovely wife Kristine and her current condition. Many of you may not know that my wife has been suffering from a debilitating condition which progressively took her mobility, concentration, focus and in some instances her dignity. After nearly two years of watching my wife get slowly worse, no matter what therapy we tried, Dr Eduardo Roderigez from Clermont Surgery decided to send us to a Neurosurgeon in Rockhampton and then onward to Brisbane where her condition was finally diagnosed as a dangerous level of fluid on the brain. This has now been treated through surgery and almost instantly we saw our old Kris back again. She arrives home soon and I hope everyone shares a yarn or two with her. I wholeheartedly thank Dr Roderigez for his decision and his humanity. On the crime front we have had break ins at the Tennis Club and Football Club with the responsible teenagers being apprehended and dealt with. On this subject please all parents work out where your kids are and make sure they are doing what they are supposed to be. To often I see kids walking around the streets and I assume that their parents know where they are. I can’t be dad to all the kids, so keep an eye on them so you don’t get any surprises when we come knocking. Drink driving apprehensions are at an all time low with a couple of low readings being processed this fortnight. It’s good to see this drop and keep the good behaviour up. Those that sneak around when they think we aren’t looking will eventually become unstuck.
Speeding motorists seems to be a constant, with most apprehensions being people driving through the area. Some ridiculous speeds which were a bit of a shock as I can think of better ways to spend anywhere from a few hundred dollars to nearly $1200! Also motorbikes and kids annoying their neighbours is still going on. Court day which is on Monday April 3 will have some people appearing that did not listen to previous warnings. If you want to lose those motorbikes and all the kit, keep riding. I am currently two officers down with the transfer of Sharon and Ordet in recent weeks. I have received a lot of applications for the positions so hopefully we will have some replacements that are suitable to our town. I can’t make any promises but a certain teacher at the high school has put in her preferences. Finally its good to hear all the mowers hacking away at the ever growing grass, which you can hear growing if you listen close enough. I recently drove through the rest of central Queensland and the Burnett region. Some of that country is so dry with even councils on the beach being drought declared, I hear. The rain is a blessing. On that note I say farewell for another week and I should let you all know that the counter will be open Monday March 20 for any licences that need urgent renewing. I have Jan away for another couple of weeks with some health issues so I’ll see what I can do. Until next time, The Sarge.

Storytime will celebrate World Harmony Day next week and if you have an interesting souvenir from overseas travels, bring it along and tell us about it at Storytime. As Storytime has also been focusing on wildlife this month, snakes will be the theme for March 31.
2500 stars made in Clermont Well done and thank you Clermont. You have made 2500 for the ‘One Million Stars to End Violence’ star weaving project. This is one quarter of the Isaac Region’s goal of making 10,000 stars for the ‘One Million Stars’ project. Can Clermont rise to the challenge of making the same number of stars to match its postcode of 4721? We have a star weaving station set up for people to drop in anytime during opening hours to weave a star from ribbon. What’s happening in Storytime? It will be the wearing of green and celebrating St Patrick’s Day at Storytime today.
Spotlight on Judy Nunn OAM You may remember Judy Nunn as Ailsa Stewart in Home and Away. After an internationally successful acting career and scriptwriting for television and radio, Judy Nunn began writing novels in the early 1990’s. Her first three novels, The Glitter Game, Centre Stage and Araluen were instant best sellers.
Holiday craft…stay tuned Clermont Library will be holding Children’s Holiday Craft sessions during the April school holidays. The sessions will have an Easter theme…stay tuned over the next couple of weeks for details.
Judy was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2015 for her services to the Australian performing arts as an actor and scriptwriter, and to literature as an author.
Have a Movie Night at Home Movie nights are always a great way for families and households to ‘chill out’, so why not come to the library to borrow DVDs? The Clermont Library has an extensive range of DVDs to suit all ages, from young children to adults. We have movies, TV series, animation, health, documentaries and indigenous themed DVDs for loan.

Children love Baby Bounce, Storytime, Craft and Rhymetime The Clermont Library runs several weekly children’s sessions. They are a good way to connect with other parents with young children.
Baby Bounce is a chance for parents to interact with their child through movement, music and song.
Rhymetime and Craft is held from 9.30am to 10am every Tuesday for children up to five years old, where they can sing and dance to nursery rhyme songs.
Storytime and Craft time for the littlies is held at the Clermont Library every Friday from 9.30am to 10.30am and caters for children up to Prep age.
Baby Bounce is held on Thursday from 9.30am to 10am and is aimed at children aged up to two years.
