New bill a win for Queenslanders In a win for all Queenslanders, a historic bill, critical to the future of regional resource communities, was passed in Parliament last week.
Mayor Anne Baker, who has been fiercely advocating with Isaac Regional Council and regional communities, for an end to forced fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) practices, with Premier and Minister for the Arts Annastacia Palaszczuk.
Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker, who has been fiercely advocating for an end to forced fly-in, flyout (FIFO) practices, witnessed the landmark win with Cr Gina Lacey and Cr Kelly Vea Vea. “This bill signifies a clear intent of all sides of government to put mining communities and regions back on a level playing field “We have won the right for people to make their own living choices no longer is where you live a condition of where you work,” she said. “This bill will also provide genuine ongoing opportunity for communities to have a seat at the table on managing social impacts. “I want to sincerely thank the community for their ongoing steadfast support, and for working tirelessly to advocate for genuine choice for all. “We must pay tribute to the Palaszczuk Government, Minister for State Development and Minister for Natural Resources and Mines Dr Anthony Lynham,
the Coordinator-General and their teams, the Chair of the Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources Committee Jim Pearce MP and his committee for taking the time to understand the complexities of this issue, and having the courage to legislate for fairness. “And I need to acknowledge my team in all of this, for their unwavering commitment and passion to righting a wrong. “This is a win for the people.” “I acknowledge there is still a lot of work ahead to maximise the fundamental intent of the bill.” “We welcome the ongoing opportunity to genuinely influence outcomes for our communities alongside government and industry,” Mayor Baker said. “The way we see it, today the rules have been set, and our communities now have a seat at the table.” For more details on Council’s submission for the Stronger and Sustainable Resource Communities Bill 2016 visit www.isaac.qld.gov.au/advocacy. On the Shelf contributed by Sue and Laura from Clermont Library Library program/event bookings Bookings are essential, call Clermont Library on 4846 3746. Please note: Children 12 years and under must be accompanied by an adult at all times when visiting the library, including during organised programs.
Journey to Croqland Come on a Journey to Croqland at the Clermont Library during the September school holidays. Croqland is an initiative of artist Walter Stahl, and artists of all ages and abilities are invited to bring to life a three-metre long Croqland-scape silhouette. The Croqland-scape looks very much like a crocodile and with imagination, the crocodile’s back can morph into a mountain range or a knee be transformed into an erupting volcano. The only rule is no numbers, words or letters are to appear in the artwork. School holiday craft/art sessions will be held at the Clermont library on Tuesday, September 19 and 26 and Thursday, September 21 and 28.
All sessions will be held from 10am to 11am. Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) sessions will continue through the school holidays and be held on Thursday afternoons from 3.30pm to 4pm. Bookings are essential as all sessions will have only 15 places available.
Books and Authors e-resource
Books and Authors enables you to search for new and old authors, books titles and more. Browse by titles, authors and genres and read an overview of books as well as recommended similar titles. Set up a My Reading Room account to create books you’d like to read or lists of favourite authors.
Isaac Libraries exchange books
Do you have a favourite author but want to find other authors who write a similar way? The Books and Authors e-resource can help. You can access Books and Authors through the Library, Arts and Culture link on Council’s website at www.isaac.qld.gov.au/e-resources
Isaac Libraries have been busy with an exchange of books between all libraries over the past few weeks. The exchange allows the libraries to refresh their collection and many patrons find new authors to read following an exchange. Don’t forget that if you want a particular book and don’t see it on the shelf, enquire with the staff.

Isaac SES ‘Be Extraordinary’
No matter who you are, or what you do, the SES needs you! The Isaac State Emergency Service (SES) is part of a national organisation of ‘ordinary people doing extraordinary things’.
SES members work as part of a skilled team and have approved functions based on local hazards and skill sets.
Each year they help their communities in times of emergency and disaster, protecting the safety of our people.
As an SES volunteer you may not be activated on a regular basis, however your assistance will be critical when needed.
Who We Are The Isaac SES is always in need of volunteers. All SES volunteers are trained and equipped to help their communities with the primary purpose of helping our most vulnerable community members. Isaac SES operate across depots in Moranbah, Nebo, Clermont, Middlemount, Dysart, Glenden, St Lawrence, Carmila and Greenhill, and welcomes volunteers aged 16 years and over.
Becoming ‘Extraordinary’ Our volunteers come from all walks of life - office workers, miners, farmers, students, tradies and retirees. In addition to helping your community in times of need you’ll become part of a like-minded yet diverse group of people. Many Isaac employers support volunteers in their workforce, meaning if you’re activated while at work they will support your SES commitments.
