Nebo resident wins Colours of Isaac A picture painting a peaceful outback setting has pulled at the public’s heart strings and been crowned the 2017 Colours of Isaac photography competition winner.

Nebo’s Charley JonesPrizeman’s image of the sun setting over a space with peacefulness won by popular vote on Facebook.

Entries were open to everyone, with keen photographers capturing the theme: Isaac inspires me because.

Ms Jones-Prizeman’s effort won out of a total of 75 entries.

Colours of Isaac photography competition winners:

“I’m truly overwhelmed by the community support. Thank First place: Charley Jones-Prizeman’s photo of the sun you to everyone for voting,” setting over a space with peacefulness she said.

“It was fantastic to win especially with all the amazing entries that were submitted.

Third prize: Paula Heelan’s River Run attracted 114 votes.

“Thank you to Isaac Regional Council for helping us showcase our devotion to the region through our imagery.”

Voting by ‘likes’ on the Isaac Regional Council Facebook page, closed at 8.30am on Friday, June 16.

Artist to grace Isaac with cultural tradition An internationally acclaimed Aboriginal artist will host a free inspirationally-filled workshop in Clermont.

“Children will decorate their own talking stick to take home for use in their family’s yarning circle.”

The art workshops are made possible thanks to a grant from the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF).

Queensland Premier and Arts Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk said the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) delivered on the Queensland Government’s commitment to foster diverse and inclusive communities, grow strong regions and provide training, education, and employment opportunities for Queenslanders.

An internationally acclaimed Aboriginal artist will host a series of free inspirationally-filled workshops across Isaac.

Lloyd Hornsby Gawura will visit nearly all corners of Isaac Regional Council’s area just in time for NAIDOC Week and the school holidays.

Mayor Anne Baker said residents and local artists are once again honoured to have Mr Hornsby back for a fourth year.

“Lloyd has a great talent for creating colourful visions, to show us Aboriginal Art as we have never seen before,” Mayor Baker said.

“Lloyd is also the winner of the 2015 Australia Day Arts and Culture Award.

“He was recognised for his work to promote Aboriginal culture and art over the past 10 years.

“Lloyd is deeply involved in the community, running workshops and school art programs.

“He also works closely with disadvantaged youth, through art therapy programs in youth detention centres and prisons.

“He uses his art to bridge the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.”

Mr Hornsby said he was excited to run another series of art workshops in Isaac libraries in July.

“I will speak with children about the history of the talking stick in indigenous culture,” he said.

“In a community circle, a talking stick is passed around from member to member allowing only the person holding the stick to speak.

“The Queensland Government is contributing $2.08 million to leverage up to $1.92 million from local councils resulting in up to $4 million available to support arts and cultural activities throughout the state in 2016–17,” said the Premier.

“This funding promotes promote the role and value of arts, culture and heritage as key drivers of inclusive communities and strong regions and ensures Queenslanders can engage with arts locally,” she said.

“Each year around 500,000 people are involved in RADF projects as practitioners, participants or audience members.”

The Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF), is a partnership between the Queensland Government and Isaac Regional Council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland.

The Lloyd Hornsby free art workshops will be held at Clermont Library on:

Monday July 3, from 10am-11am and 2pm-3pm Mr Hornsby will also visit Nebo State School, Coppabella State School, Mistake Creek State School, Kilcummin State School, Valkyrie State School, Carmila State School, St Lawrence State School, and Clarke Creek State School.

Isaac Libraries will also be hosting free school holiday activities catering for all school ages.

The healing power of music: Queensland Music Festival stages mass community production uniting hundreds of locals from the Isaac region Queensland Music Festival (QMF) will celebrate the talent, diversity and resilience of Central Queensland’s agricultural and coal mining Isaac region by uniting hundreds of local community members to star in a world premiere musical spectacular on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 July in Moranbah.

In the most significant cultural event to be staged in the region, The Power Within will reflect on the realities and resources of pop-up mining towns – boom and bust cycles, the vagaries of weather, and subsequent economic and social challenges – and the sheer power and beauty of a united community.

The massive outdoor show will star more than 250 locals including schools, town choirs, instrumentalists, featured vocalists, dance groups and horse riders, all set against an inventive industrial backdrop.

The Power Within tells the story of discovering an abundant supply of music under the ground, and a town being built to mine the natural resource. A historic flood threatens to destroy everything and the citizens must come together again to recapture their spirit, and reveal the true meaning of cooperation and kinship.

The production is the result of an 18-month-long community engagement project in which QMF, working in close partnership with Isaac Regional Council (IRC), has embedded its team in six of the towns across the Isaac region: Moranbah, Clermont, Dysart, Middlemount, Glenden and Nebo. QMF’s creative team has been working with schools and community groups since October 2016 to mine the local creative

forces, increase skills to create a show that reflects the stories of the region.

QMF Artistic Director Katie Noonan said The Power Within demonstrates first-hand the healing power of music.

“The Power Within offers the wonderful communities of the Isaac region a chance to observe their own resilience, reflect on the importance of family and their hopes for the future through self empowerment, and to forge new friendships and partnerships across the region,” Ms Noonan said.

“The event addresses important social and economic themes such as mental health, agricultural heartache and the complicated nature of mining, which we cannot turn a blind eye to, but it also highlights innumerable reasons to be hopeful and to celebrate.”

Premier and Minister for the Arts Annastacia Palaszczuk said the Queensland Government was proud to support the Queensland Music Festival and its The Power Within project, which uses music and performance to strengthen social cohesion and celebrate local identity.

Isaac Regional Council Mayor Anne Baker said Isaac is thrilled to host this spectacular, free community event showcasing a cast of more than 250 talented locals and supported by well-known music industry professionals.

“At the heart of this project is the youth of the Isaac region and giving them the opportunity to unite and shine.

“A huge focus is to promote wellbeing by helping young people develop skills, build confidence, and create a better connection to self, peers and the place they call home. The potential outcomes and benefits of this project are inestimable.

“There is an incredible amount of talent waiting to be seen and heard in the Isaac region. In fact, we decided early on in the project to dedicate more resources towards building on the strengths of the community rather than bringing in a headline artist.

The Power Within is presented by Queensland Music Festival, Isaac Regional Council and Queensland Government and supported by the Tim Fairfax Family Foundation, Australia Council for the Arts, QUT Creative Industries, BHP Billiton Mistubishi Alliance, Anglo American, Moranbah Community Workers Club, Pembroke Resources, Glencore Clermont Open Cut Mine and ABC Tropical North.

Colleen’s Walk for Cancer - update contributed by Colleen Nicholas From the Track….

By the time this hits the shelves in Clermont I will be well and truly down the track…My first days’ walk went well and looking back it’s hard to believe I’m already nine days in!

“I spent a night in Perth, a comfy bed, hot shower, purchased my gas, spare batteries, matches and enjoyed a delicious steak at a great Italian restaurant. I was determined to have the steak as figured I would need some ‘oomph’ today! No truer word as I required a ‘degree’ of energy. I also knew there would be no eggs on the brekky menu for at least 12 days so I made the most of a healthy breakfast before starting the walk.

Kalamunda is a lovely area and I would love to visit it again. It took me awhile to fiddle with my backpack to get it comfortable and also to set up Spot Tracker, camera etc. It was then ‘full steam ahead’, except I felt as though I was crawling till I got into the swing of it.

I continually bless my walking poles ‘heckle and jeckle’ as they save me from many busters and slip overs. The ground changed from slippery to little pebbles to rocks to boulders, so the terrain was quite challenging and it didn’t take long for me to be questioning my sanity!

Basically I walked up and over the Perth hills and over creeks a few times. I missed a turn at one section where the track had been diverted so ended up scrambling through a creek as I could see the proper track. Figured it was easier then climbing back up with heavy pack. Gave myself a clip in the ear to really concentrate as the tracks are narrow and very heavy undergrowth, shrubs and trees so one could be confused very quickly.

I also learnt that I cannot stand and tilt my head back to gaze at the amazing tall trees as the weight of the pack pulled the body backwards!! Once again the walking poles came to the rescue with a scramble. Also have found that when I stop (and put my pack on the highest log or rock in sight) that I feel as if I’m walking on air till the weight settles out!

The scenery is spectacular. Walked through the Kalamunda National park. Jarrah, marri forest, also

sheoak and banksia. Lots of rocky outcrops, huge boulders. Kalamunda has a strong timber and rail history.

There are Dieback boot cleaning stations to help prevent spread of disease. Plenty of watercourses to cross. Passed two massive jarrah trees with burnt out girths that are estimated to be 300 to 400 years old.

Hewett’s Hill campsite was very much a welcome sight as was feeling rather weary. I had the camp to myself so it was very quiet and peaceful though I felt cold during the night and a very heavy dew so very damp. I learn as I go!!

I was woken by kookaburras and butcher birds who came to check me out. I know I enjoyed a hot cuppa.

Every day is a new challenge with ever more beautiful scenery to tempt me from navigating my sometimes very slippery slope!

My original plan to ‘double hut’ has proven ambitious as the terrain has me looking forward to my little cocoon each night right on dark. I do sneak the odd one in though.

My dehydrated meals are delicious, though I suspect anything would taste good by the time I get to camp!

I am managing anywhere between 9 and 16km a day depending on the terrain and my ‘stuffed’ factor.

126 kilometres down so safe to say I’ve completed one tenth of the track – thankfully my fundraising efforts are looking much closer to our end goal!

Children wing it during author’s Isaac tour Burst of laughter and winging an emu-tation of walking like Australia’s feathered coat-of-arms icon energised Isaac libraries last week.

Armed with her new picture book Eddie, Excellent Chef, Robin Adolph’s wit and charm set children into an array of fun at Dysart, Clermont and Moranbah libraries.

Mayor Anne Baker said the accomplished writer was an instant hit with Isaac residents.

Public Notices Water meter reading underway Isaac Regional Council’s water meter reading program will commence throughout the region as part of the introduction of the two-part water tariff.

Following a 12-month reprieve by Council, water consumption charges take effect from July 1, 2017.

Ratepayers will not be charged for water consumption for usage between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017.

The first water notice issued will be for the period July 1, 2017 to December 31, 2017 and will be issued during January 2018.

To help ensure the charging system is accurate, efficient and reliable a manual water meter read program will take place Monday to Friday between the hours from 7am to 5pm:

Ozobots are back!

Ozobots are small robots that can teach children basic programming and coding.

Children can draw tracks using red, blue, green and black markers for the Ozobot to read and move about.

Don’t miss the holiday fun at library

Week, which is also the second week of the school holidays.

The fun continues at the Clermont Library next week with more school holiday craft sessions.

These sessions are suitable for children aged from five years and bookings are essential as each session is limited to 15 participants.

Clermont Library will host two workshops with Lloyd Hornsby on Monday, July 3 and both workshops are suitable for children aged five years and up.

All craft sessions will be held from 10am to 11am and will have a NAIDOC theme.

Come along on Tuesday, July 4 and make a ‘Ngaka Ngaka’ game, which is an indigenous game similar to Tic-Tac-Toe. You can also decorate a wooden emu or turtle with indigenous art.

STEM: Ozobot sessions will be held at the Clermont Library on Thursdays from 3.30pm to 4pm until early July.

Children attending the craft session on Thursday, July 6 will be creating Aboriginal art hand portraits where they can trace around their hand and use the ‘dot’ painting technique to make a unique painting.

The sessions are aimed at children aged from four years and bookings are essential.

A Stem session will also be held on Thursday, July 6 from 3.30pm to 4pm.

Lego building sessions are being held in conjunction with the STEM: Ozobot sessions on Thursday afternoons.

TRX Suspension Training Every Suspension Training exercise builds true functional strength and improves flexibility, balance and core stability all at once.

Intermediate sessions are higher intensity workouts as basics should be well ingrained in participants.

Yoga A class for everyone! For ages 5 and up to 90 or more. You will learn breathing exercises and positions that can help improve arthritic symptoms, insomnia, blood pressure, mood and aid with relaxation and flexibility. This class is suitable for pregnant women, screening will be conducted prior to participation.

CLASS DESCRIPTION Gut and Butt Blast Is a target class that focuses on strengthening and toning the nine core divisions of the abdominal plane, simultaneously blasting the three muscles of the buttocks, hamstrings and quadriceps. This will increase fat metabolism at rest and help slim and tone those problematic areas. Although not targeted, general whole body conditioning applies and while challenging, is more than suitable for any fitness level.

Open gym This is your opportunity to use the gym facilities, there will be a basic weights program and WOD on offer for your utilisation, or you could just be creative and do your own training.

MetaPWR MetaPWR is a fast moving circuit, using moves that need strength, speed and power.

All MetaPWR workouts use the entire body,involving your upper and lower body and core muscles.

Muscle is metabolically active tissue, so the more muscles you work the more calories you burn.

The more calories you burn, the more productive your workouts will be and the faster you will lose fat.

Circuit training This is a form of body conditioning or resistance training using high-intensity/low-intensity aerobic energy. It targets strength building and muscular endurance.

An exercise ‘circuit’ is one completion of all prescribed exercises in the program. It is highly enjoyable and recommended to all levels of fitness.

Lets lift This program has been designed to target the eight large muscle groups in a 45 minutes whole body workout. This is achieved through the use of barbell and dumbbell weights.

This class is suitable for all fitness levels.

Metafit This is a 30 minutes bodyweight training system that gets results!

It is a functional and effective, metabolic workout that will change the way you train. Created by a former Royal Marine Commando, Metafit combines the latest HIIT techniques with traditional ‘old school’ bodyweight exercises to set the metabolism on fire.
