Adaugo’s Story "Always and Forever, each moment with you" ...famous line from a Diana Ross song, defines the story below. Love is a complicated place to be but how the journey starts, seems to be a mystery. We write our love stories over and over till the pencil fades. In the year 2018, on a rainy Wednesday in September, Demilade was busy with phone, attending different "hoooos and haaaas" found on social media till he got a message from his friend Lydia. Lydia: Hey, good afternoon Demi boy, hope sey rain no too dey disturb your side. Demilade: Lol...lydia, good afternoon. It's raining heavily here. But wetin man go do, bury myself in thick blanket and hope one day that this curse of being single will be forever broken. Lydia: Ode, you are a black goat, ewu osogbo. You better hang your shyness boot somewhere and get someone started. Demilade: see as this girl see me finish. Don't worry i will come with a testimony. Lydia: Before i forget, i have a friend that needs help. She's going through a rough time and i trust you are the right person to help her. She has refused to get help. I just can't stand watching her going through all of that. I will send her contact. Demilade: Ooooo, sigh...ok, i'm doing this just for you. What's her name? Lydia: Adaugo, she's fair and fine too. It is talk i asked you to talk with her ooo. Demilade: Haba, you know i have integrity.
Lydia: I have spoken with her, so you can go ahead. Thank you so much. Let me know as it goes. Demilade: Alright babes. Take care. *Demilade calls Adaugo* Demilade: Hello, good afternoon. My name is Demilade Walter. Adaugo: *in a bad mood* Hello, ehehn...who is this? How can i help you? Demilade: Your friend Lydia, gave me your contact. She explained the whole situation. So can we talk? Adaugo: *pissed off on why Lydia gave him her number* See i'm sorry i can't talk. Thank you. *Ends the call* *Demilade was stunned about the call ended, wasn't surprised because it wasn't his first gig* Demilade: I just pray she would be fine. Let me think of a text to send her. Hopefully it helps her. ***Demilade sent Adaugo a text to encourage her*** Lydia calls*** Lydia: Demi boy, whatsup? How did it go? Demilade: It didn't go well, but i expected it. I sent her a text. Lydia: Thank you for what you do for me. I really appreciate. I will call you tomorrow. I trust you to really do well. Sent a little something to your phone. Demilade: You didn't have to. We are just here to make ourselves live a better world. Do take care. Good night.
**In Adaugo's house Mr Diemerechi: Ada, Ada nwa, Adaugo...where is your mother? Adaugo: Papa, i don't know. She might have mentioned going to the market to buy vegetable and that your favorite stock fish. Mr Diemerechi: You see why it is good to marry a good wife, a good partner. I pray you find a husband that will love you equally as your mother loves my stomach. **they burst in laughter Adaugo: Papa, Papa, you and this your stomach. Mr Diemerechi: Come, Ngwanu, Your face is dull today, what is wrong? Adaugo: Papa nothing. I'm ok Mr Diemerechi: Are you sure? Because your generation have started accusing us of not caring. Now i'm asking Adaugo: Papa don't worry. I'll will be fine. It is just my mood. ***Adaugo's mom walks in Mrs Justina: Una good afternoon. Ada comman carry this thing to the kitchen Adaugo: Yes mama Mrs Justina: Where are your younger ones? Ebuka, Iheanyi, Ufuoma? Where are you people hiding? I dan come, una dan go hide. Mr Diemerechi: You too, your workload is too much. Do you want to kill them for me?
Mrs Justina: Papa Ada, na you dey spoil this children. I am saying my own oooo. Let them not comman call me in their marriages to comman help them. **Adaugo goes into her room. All her thoughts came back from the walls she hid them. Adaugo: Why is my life like this? Just going backward. As at last year, i still had a boyfriend, suddenly all ended in one hour, a relation of 3 years, just because i didn't want to have sex with him. Chinedu, i can't forgive you. Also femi too. That aside, school has been going backwards, 12 carry over courses. Yeeeh, papa must not hear. He will die of heart attack. I am such a disappointment. It is better i take my life than live with this misery. **suddenly, Demilade text came in on Ada's phone** Adaugo: Who is this again? This boy. Let me read what he sent. "Hi...good evening. I really don't know how you are feeling but i can relate. You are not alone. I just need you to talk to me. The sun will shine again for you. Take care"
Adaugo: hmmmm, maybe i should have a talk with him. I will call tomorrow. **Lydia and Demilade worked in the same company, Nigeria Ports Authority, Marina as interns in Training department. Lydia, a light-skinned lady, corper serving at NPA is the only daughter of her father and has a twin brother, Lyden. Mrs Ayinana: **shouts Lydia's name like a two chorused pig** Lydiaaaaaaaa..Lydiaaaa, come here. Lydia: Yes ma,**runs in response to her voice as everyone fears Mrs Ayinana**
Mrs Ayinana: Come, what are you doing? Shebi you are just sleeping, let me give you work. You will help me buy yam and egg in that car park Lydia: How much own ma? Mrs Ayinana: **hands her 1000naira with a big food flask** buy yam 500 naira, egg 500 naira. Lydia: Ok ma. **Lydia walks out of Mrs Ayinana's office and meets Demilade. It was obvious she was crushing on him but you know a woman's pride lies in keeping her heart mouth shut till prince charming opens up Demilade: Where are you going again? Lydia: **talks in a cute manner** It is mrs Ayinana that sent me on an errand. Comman follow me na. She playfully grabs his hands Demilade: **looks tired and also unwilling to reject her request** ok...but first, let me goan drop this documents on my table. Keep the elevator waiting for me *he winks at her as she melts in cuteness* *in Lydia's head** - I like him, but his religion is my problem, i don't even have the balls to tell him how i feel. But i'm super happy around him* **Demilade caught up with Lydia and they both went on the errand. An old woman was walking towards the both of them, she suddenly stopped Demilade Old Woman: Kaasan Baba mi (Afternoon, my child), oju e fe jo oju ana mi (your face looks like my son in-law Demilade: Ekaasan ma (good afternoon ma) ***stunned with no response to what the old woman said.
Old Woman: Mo ri pe omo daadaa ni e, ile ayo lo ma ni. Ma se rere lo, ma see rere lo. Jo ranmi lowo pelu owo ounje(I noticed you a good person. and you will have a good home. Keep doing good, keep doing good. Please help me with money to eat). Demilade: **checks his pocket, nothing was with him** Lydia, borrow me 200naira **hands over the money to the old woman. She prayed for the two of them and walked ahead to her journey. Demilade was shocked and kept laughing. Lydia kept taunting him with the son in-law scene Lydia: Hehehehehe...you are someone's son in-law. Lord have mercy. Demilade: Leave me jor. Lydia: Let's cross before laugh will make me forget my errand. **They ran the errand and delivered it to Mrs Ayinana who was already boiling because it took longer than usual. It was closing time. Demilade picked his car keys, bade goodbye to his office colleagues. Called Lydia to come join in the car park, because she lives two bus stops from his place. They both got to the car and Demilade drove off. Lydia: Have you tried reaching my friend today? Demilade: Sent her a message as usual today. Hopefully she desires to talk. Without that, i really can't force counselling on her. Lydia: Please try your best. Thank you very much. Demilade: Anything for you babes.
**They got to Lydia's bus stop, Demilade drives in to drop Lydia at her house. She tapped his cheeks and alighted after saying good bye to him.
***Demilade to himself: I like her, very caring and has a large heart for everyone that steps on her toes. Good character. But she's never serious whenever i try to talk about the relationship thing. She shuts me down. Well, another day, another battle. **He drives off to his house. Burna boy's anybody song plays in the background. Conductor: Ketu, Ojota, Maryland....**repeats it thrice...Eeekiss me sister, e maa bo(come here) **the random lady rapidly walk past him Driver: Saheed, as we no see customer, shey make we do the other package? Conductor: Ooya na...gbe body eee **Driver and conductor decided to change their operation to a one chance vehicle. The picked up passengers around Idi-iroko area. Adaugo was among the passengers. Suddenly, the conductor brought out a m16 gun. Conductor: i must not hear any noise, if i hear kpim...i go send you go meet your ancestors
**everyone was in fear, the man next to Adaugo pooed on his body. The bus was reeking of one chance odour. The driver got to their destination along ibadan express road. Told them all to come down and line up. Tied the faces with red piece of cloth, marched them down to Baba Soapylife. Baba Soapylife: Are these the candidates for the gods? Driver: Yes baba, taps an older lady"s breast. See as this one looks rumurumu...fleshy, na money full here. Conductor: Otiripopotiyoyo....we go blow. **Baba Soapylife brings out a small tortoise which was to be placed on the heads of those to be used for ritual. Baba placed it on the head of the first two, the tortoise made a sound "na dem, na dem". He ordered they should be taken to the backyard. Baba Soapylife finally got to Adaugo's turn, the tortoise didn't make any noise. Adaugo was sweating profusely, reading psalms 23 in her mind for God to help her. Still the tortoise didn't make a sound. Baba Soapylife: Where una see this one? Driver: Na for road. Baba Soapylife: This wan go spoil things for us. Make una take am far away from here. **Driver and conductor took Adaugo and one other person back to the main road. Ordered them not to look back. That was how Adaugo regained her freedom. She kept crying and weeping, thanking God also. The other passenger fainted in the process. Passers-by came to their rescue. Adaugo finally got home, told the story to her parents. Everyone was filled with Thanks, praising God in tears.
**Sunday morning, Adaugo and her family went for a thanksgiving service, it was testimony time. Pastor: Praise praise praise the Lord Congregation: Halleluyah Pastor: Our God is good, all the time. I have a daughter here whom the Lord has shown His might and placed His hands of miracle on her. Let me give her the mic to explain her ordeal. **Adaugo narrated her experience and everybody wept in tears of Joy for her. On their way home from church with her family, they decided to have a treat at Dominos. On their way, suddenly a lorry from nowhere suddenly rams into their vehicle, crushing the car and everyone in it. People rushed to save them, the lorry driver ran away before facing jungle justice. The Lagos emergency, LASEMA, was called upon to provide swift service to help the survivors. **Everyone in the vehicle asides Mr Diemerechi and Adaugo made it through. Adaugo's father was in position of life and death, Adaugo lost a leg. The Ambulance took them to the nearest hospital, Reddington. On getting there, Mr Diemerechi took his last breathe, He cried in pain and tears. But before he died, there was a death bed conversation between father and daughter as they were both on lying on the ambulance bed. Mr Diemerechi: **pants heavily** Ada Ada Where are you? Adaugo: **cries out*** papa i am here. Where is Mama and my siblings?
Mr Diemerechi: ***tries to talk as his soul was slowly draining out of him. Ada, hold my hands. **She held his hands** Ada, i want you to make it, make me proud me, make your mother proud. You know i love you so much. Adaugo, ***mumbles some words in Igbo*** stay strong for me and live me legacy. Adaugo: Papa what are you saying? Mr Diemerechi: Adaugo, my first seed, *whispers silently....takes a deep breath and gave up the ghost** Adaugo: **tries to speak out, as she is going through severe pain*** Papa, papa, papa....no ooooooooo **She cries heavily. The ambulance got to the hospital, Adaugo was taken to the theatre for quick operation.
***We are nothing but pencils in the hand of the creator, famous line from Wale Adenuga for Superstory series. Life can be quite unpredictable. When you think you are getting it right, the worse absolutely happens.
Demilade's Story **a voice screams Nurse: madam, push, push, the baby's head is out Woman: **groans** i can't push again, i am tired Man: Josephine, please try harder...the baby is almost out. Josephine: **slaps man's face with an angry lool** are you not the one that put me in this position? If only they told me labour would be like this, i would have avoided being pregnant. Nurse: we need you to push harder, push push Josephine: Hmmmmmmmmmmmfff, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr...breathes profusely..yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeh, **the baby comes out Nurse: it is a baby boy Man: thank God, our bundle of joy is here. Josephine: Derin, i need to talk to you. I want you to take good care of our son. I have a name for him, OluwaDemilade. Mr Derin: Josephine, what are you saying? We will take care of him together Mrs Josephine: **smiles** you are a good man and i know you will be a good father. Please take care of our son. **takes a deep breath and dies** Mr Derin: **holding the hands of his wife while crying heavily** Josephine don't leave me alone in this world, who will take care of Demilade, we both had an agreement. **cries heavily** Josephine has left me oooo, Josephine has left me ooooo **voice fades out
**It is almost 26 years after the death of Mr Derin's wife, Josephine, he refused to marry again because the love of his life left him. And he vowed never to commit to another woman. He remembers the story of the birth of his only son. Mr Derin, the owner of the famous "SinguPringu" franchise, with its outlet in almost every areas in Lagos and outside Lagos. They deal with creating the perfect scenes for couples at affordable rates. Even davido and chioma's engagement was planned by his company
**Mr Derin worked really hard as a single father to send Demilade to school as well as his needs. Mr Derin reaccounts a story to demilade when he was 5 years old. Demilade: Daddy, where's mummy? (*cries). You keep telling me she travelled. Doesn't she wish to see me? **Mr Derin, who always seem to come up with an answer couldn't find one. Demilade: We had composition in English class to talk about our mother, and when it got to my turn, everyone laughed at me (cries heavily). Daddy, where's mummy? Mr Derin joins in him in crying too Mr Derin: You know daddy loves you, i need to tell you something and let us get home first. .......
***back to the present Mr Derin: Life was really hard for me especially being a single father having to raise a stubborn kid who was adamant on seeing his mum. There were days i just wanted to run away. But i'm grateful all that story has become a tale to tell. You've become a fine young man. I am proud of you my son. But wait first, you mean to tell me that with all the 8 years in university, you didn't see a young girl to show me ehn? Demilade: Daddy...**tries to laugh knowing how uncomfortable that question was**. But you said i should face my studies and leave relationships out of the matter. Mr Derin: Ehn...i said that to make you focus but i didn't say not to lock your eyes on one. Come, where do you think i met you mother? ehn. Let me tell you a story. Ehn, you see, during my university days in LAUTECH, i saw your mother's picture on my friend's phone. She was so fine, even my soul agreed to the beauty............told my friend to link us up and tell her i liked her. Luckily, she was crushing on me, so it made things easier for me. We talked at length, and were completely honest about the kind of friendship we needed. That was how your mother became my library partner and girlfriend. You see, Josephine, will not let me rest until i finish reading my course for the day. Tell me why i won't marry her ehn. I didn't think of it twice on the day i proposed, it was a make shift ring but she accepted it with all gladness. Demilade: Hmmmmmmmn...daddy was sleek and intelligent.
Mr Derin: That's the point, finding someone that will add value to your life regardless of the extra pleasures that comes with being together. Though she was older than me 5 years difference, she bettered me, i didn't like her approach at first...i submitted because i was willing to learn from someone who cared for the growth of others. I made sure she reaped that trust and energy + faith in me by making her proud and supporting her in all ways. We respected each other. No one could find the age difference. That's the kind of partner you should find. Demilade: Daddy, but you know how this world is now, some ladies of nowadays have their priorities fixed on the endless flashy things of the world. It's hard coming by the ones i really need. Mr Derin: You see, that's where the problem is. It is not always about the one you are looking for, sometimes you need to make sure you are packaged and built for the one you need to find. Before a female penguin agrees to the male, she needs to make sure he is capable of building a home, and not just someone who wants to mate and leave her in the nest to bear all the problem. Mr Derin: I am not saying you should rush into a relationship. All i'm saying is this, if you have someone you have your eyes locked on, do not fail to express how you feel. Demilade: I understand you sir. Mr Derin: Tell Laide to bring my food ooo, i am hungry. Demilade: **walks to the kitchen** Laide, daddy said you should bring his food. Laide: ok, should i serve yours?
Demilade: No...i'm not hungry yet. Don't worry yourself, i will take my food when i'm ready to eat. **Demilade proceeds to his room, to call Lydia after that long pep talk from his dad. He suddenly realises the one woman who he has eyes on was Lydia and he wasn't going to take chances. **A stroll back in time about how Demilade and Lydia met. They actually went to the same school, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso. But met only once which led to their friendship. **We hear two voices screaming at each other. Unknown male voice: If you don't leave my phone, i will slap you. Oooya, drop it 1, drop it 2, drop it 3. Unknown female voice: I trusted you with all my life. I trusted you with the very foundation of my heart. How could you do this to me? Why? **cries** Unknown male voice: Well, it is not my fault. You pushed me to doing it. I had no choice than to go find another home since this one kept trying to put fire to suffocate the occupants of the house. Unknown female voice: Oh really? Is that the card you will play, Emeka, is that the card you will play right now? Till you got her pregnant. Lord have mercy. Emeka: can you please stop making me the guilty party here. We are both guilty. Ehn, i went overboard, but then it doesn't matter.
Unknown female voice: It matters to me because I promised love and lifetime to you. You just had to go stick your junk in the trunk of another woman because of a little heat. I hate you **cries** f**k you, f**k everything we had. I am done. **The lady walks out of the room, as it was already in the night, heading to her own place to relieve herself of the misery she got entangled in. Her boyfriend cheated on her with a mutual friend. Unknown female: I just wanna stop breathing, i just want to die. **sobs ***Meanwhile Demilade went to get food for himself at Satisfiers restaurant at Adenike, walking back home. Suddenly, he hears the voice of someone crying in the dark, puts on the torchlight of his phone to see who it is. He found a young lady crying alone in the dark soaked in her own tears. He thought to mind his business but then his conscience won't let him leave someone like that. He approached her. Demilade: Hello, good evening. Unknown female: **didn't give a response Demilade: Please are you ok? Because it is not safe for you to be out there alone in this kind of environment. Unknown female: **ignores him Demilade: Please i am concerned. I could have walked past you but i just needed to make sure all was well and besides i won't forgive myself seeing this and went ahead to ignore. Please do you mind i know your name? Unknown female: **speaks softly...my name is Lydia.
**Demilade tries to move closer to her and asked for her name again. She moves a little in discomfort. Unknown female: I'm Lydia. Demilade: I am Demilade Walter. Can you tell me what happened to you? Lydia: **sighs** it is quite complicated. Demilade: **makes a funny eyebrow look in hopes to make her smile, she smiled a little** i'm complicated myself, so talk to me. Lydia: You know what they say about happy endings not being for everyone, my name was included in that list. Demilade: I don't get. Did something horrible happen? Lydia: **sighs** It is a relationship issue. My relationship of 4 years came crashing without warning all because of my foolishness. He cheated on because i tried to frustrate him. Demilade: First rule, never solely blame yourself for something two people got involved in. Lydia: You won't understand. I played the devil and i got stung by the devil's fork. Demilade: You see, i understand beyond what you just said. But then, i still stand by my words, never solely blame yourself for what two people were involved in. It never ends well for anyone. Lydia: I was responsible. He wasn't giving me enough attention. I had insecurities, i needed constant reassurance. But then he just wasn't there whenever i needed a home. I had to throw tantrum by reminding him i am never to be ignored. Now i got burnt.
Demilade: maybe he had issues of his to deal...i fault you for you not considering that part but then you are a couple, it means you are supposed to be transparent about each other's personal battle. "Be my strength in my weakness, be my voice when i can't find mine". Well, we are humans and a lot can go wrong. You shouldn't blame yourself. It is not fair to you. Lydia: what can i do? **sobs** i ruined it all. Demilade: The first thing you can do is sharing this food with me? Lydia: No, i'm fine. Demilade: There’s nothing to be afraid of. I went to get food for myself. I won’t mind you joining me... *He brings out the food from the nylon, hands her the spoon. They both ate the food. **Demilade saw Lydia was relaxed, she could wear a smile. Lydia: Thank you for tonight. I really dunno how i could have coped without your help. One minute i was totally miserable, now i feel more relaxed. Demilade: It's safe to call us friends and that’s what friends are supposed to do, be there for each other. Lydia: Thank you so much. I'm really grateful. Demilade: Let me walk you to your place. Lydia: Alright. **Demilade helped Lydia up and they both went ahead to Lydia's place Demilade: What level and department are you in? Lydia: Food Science & Engineering 200L Demilade: All these our food people...i guess you must like food that much to want to study it Lydia: **bursts into laughter*** you are a funny person
Demilade: But sincerely, when things don't seem to go in your favor, ending your life is not the solution. Instead, cry all you can, get up and make happiness your home. Lydia: It is so easy to say. Demilade: as expected, a lot of things will want to swallow you in life, it is up to you to face it and say enough is enough. I need to breathe. Lydia: Thank you for your wise words. **looks up** we have gotten to my place. Demilade: This is where i say good bye for now but before give me your number. Lydia: Ok...07024092019. **hugs demilade**Thank you so much. Demilade: Haba, it is what we do. I just need you to be fine. I will call you as soon as i get to my place ok? Lydia: Alright...good night. ***Demilade and Lydia became really close friends as some would call her his sister. He made sure things went back to normal for Lydia especially regaining her academic stance by helping her with tutorials. He graduated before her, but yet still made sure she was good all the time.
***Back to the present, Demilade tried calling Lydia to tell her his feelings before he went to bed. She didn't pick, he called like 3 more times, still no response. He decided to send a WhatsApp message. "Dear Lydia, of course you know how much i adore you. Honestly, every moment with you takes me back to the very first day i saw you. Ok let me not sound like every other guy. Your friendship has been so genuine, very honest and loyal. The times apart and we still come back to continue where we stopped. I haven't had that in a million years. That's how sincere we are with each other. We could have parted ways after so many moments shared but no, no...We find home in ourselves. Seeing you every time we come back together feels like the very first day of meeting you ...that innocence you carry in your spirit. I could have easily maintained this as friendship bit i will be so stupid and foolish not to attempt to try to build a forever home with you.
**Demilade goes to bed
***** (Alarm - baby shark do do do do do ) around 5:00am on Adaugo's phone, as she was still in the hospital. It was a rainy morning. There was a broadcast message sent by the Nigerian Weather Commission telling Lagosians to stay in their houses as it would be raining hailstone. It was a day for her to be discharged by the doctors after spending 3 months with intensive physiotherapy. Adaugo decided to look through the window to see the outside world, limping slowly towards it. The doctor walks in. Doctor: **with a smile** good morning sunshine, how are you today? Adaugo: Well, i'm ok...i guess i can say i'm good. Doctor: How is that area of the leg? Less pain?
Adaugo: Not really, but it's time to start getting used to having one leg to walk. I know it will be tough at first, but i will overcome my physical limitation. Doctor: That's good to hear. We will be discharging you this evening. Any family member you can call? Adaugo: **tears filled her eyes** No, but i have a friend who should be able to help. Let me call her. Doctor: I have my morning rounds with other patients, so i will be back. **Adaugo calls her friend Lydia** Adaugo: Hello, Lydia, it's me Ada Lydia: **waterworks on Lydia's eyes** Ada, how are you? i am sorry about everything. Adaugo: It's fine dear. I need a favor from you. Lydia: Tell me Adaugo: I will be getting discharged this evening. Can you help with a cab? Lydia: Of course, i will. What time do you want me to come pick you up? Adaugo: Can't say precisely but in the evening. As soon as the doctor signs on my discharge form, i will call you. Lydia: Alright dear. I am here for you. Adaugo: See you later.
**Adaugo sits on the hospital bed, memories of her lost family flashed through her head. From the ritualists issue to a whole family dying in an accident. It was just too much for her to take in. Adaugo: God, i really don't know how i will go survive the rest of the journey from here but i need you to guide me. I will miss dad, mum and my 3 siblings. I need you all to keep watching me. I am going to live for you all. **It was time for Adaugo to go home, she called Lydia after the doctor has confirmed her fit to go home. Lydia came with Demilade to the hospital. She needed to use his car. Demilade and Lydia stepped into Adaugo's ward. Demilade: hi...good evening **Lydia rushed to hug her friend Lydia: This is the guy i told you about that time, do you remember? Adaugo: oh, your counsellor guy? i remember. Nice to meet you. Demilade: Nice meet to meet you too. How are you feeling? Adaugo: I am better now just that i don't have two legs to prove it. Lydia: He is the one driving us home. I told him to help book a cab but insisted on helping out. Adaugo: Thank you so much. I pray God repays your kindness.
**They helped with Adaugo’s bags and headed to Demilade's car. Adaugo still had PSTD so she held on tight to Lydia's hands till she slept off. Demilade finally got to Lydia's place, so that she can get all the help she needed at her place and meanwhile, also help Adaugo clean her place before she moves in. Lydia's family welcomed Adaugo, treated to her a wonderful evening and Lydia helped her to bed. Adaugo: Somebody help help me, somebody help me. **she kept running as some dark creature kept chasing her. Adaugo: **feeling tired already** somebody help me, help me. i don't want to die yet. Papa, Mama, help me. **Suddenly Adaugo wakes up from that horrible nightmare, panting heavily and sweating profusely. Then she bursts into tears, all alone in the room she was given to rest. She cried heavily. She cried herself back to sleep.
***It is morning in the city of Lagos. A vibrant city that never sleeps. Lydia came into her friend's room to see if she is doing ok. She moves the window blind to allow the early morning sun dazzle round the room. Lydia: Ada, good morning. Adaugo: **with a faint smile** good morning Lily Lydia: I hope you slept well? Adaugo: Not really, but i guess will be fine. Lydia: I have boiled water for you, you can come have your bath. What would you like to eat?
Adaugo: **tries to sit upright*** what do you have at home? Lydia: Oats, Custard, Pap, egg, waffles...just name it. I will cook for you. Adaugo: Alright, i will have custard, egg and bread too. Lydia: Before then, let me help you to the bathroom and help you with your bath. **Lydia helped her friend clean-up and other necessary body care. Picked out the clothes for her to wear. Massaged her body also and helped her to the bed. Lydia: Let me go make your breakfast. I will be back in a jiffy. Adaugo: **sobs** thank you my friend. I really don't how i will do all this without you. I am grateful. **Lydia hugs and heads to the kitchen to make breakfast for the both of them. Lydia: Food is ready...*as she glows up the room with the amazing breakfast* **Lydia made sure her friend ate to satisfaction and also used her meds. Adaugo slept off.** (westlife - flying without wings lyrics) Everybody's looking for that something One thing that makes it all complete You find it in the strangest places Places you never knew it could be You find it in the deepest friendship The kind you cherish all your life And when you know how much that means You've found that special thing You're flying without wings
**Demilade pays a visit to Lydia's house to check on her friend. He stopped at Addide to get farm fresh, chi iced tea and oreos for them. He got to her house, helped himself into her house, since there was no at home asides her and Adaugo. He decided to check Lydia in her room. He saw Adaugo with a knife trying to cut herself to bleed to death. Demilade: Jesus....Adaugo, please can you drop the knife. Adaugo: **cries** what is the point of living? i basically have nothing to hold on to. I lost my family all in one dat Demilade: no no no...You have me and Lydia to help. Please don't do this to yourself. **He tries to move closer to get the knife from her. That slight movement from Demilade caused a shock to her and made her cut her thigh. Everywhere steeeeeww...sorry blood, reeking of blood. Adaugo was bleeding heavily. Demilade quickly collected the knife and tried calling for help. No one responded. He remembered his basic first aid rule to tie a piece of cloth around that area to minimize the blood flow. He did that. Adaugo passed out. Demilade quickly carried her out of the house to the hospital. **Did she survive? Doctor: pass me the scapel? Nurse Amaka: ...doctor, her b.p is dropping. **It was an urgent surgery. It took 2 hours to get it done. The doctor came out to meet Demilade, to tell him the surgery was successful and she made it. Demilade made a call to lydia to explain what happened.
Demilade: Can i see her? Doctor: In the next 30 minutes, see nurse Amaka. Demilade: Alright, thank you doctor. **Demilade walks into the ward Adaugo is being admitted. She looks so worn out and frail. Demilade sits by her side waiting for her to wake up. He sleeps off. Adaugo wakes up, she sees Demilade has slept off. She taps him. Adaugo: Demi...*she speaks faintly** Demilade ***Demilade wakes up Demilade: Heyyyyyyy...How are you feeling now? i didn't even know when i slept off. Adaugo: Thank you for coming to my rescue. I didn't know what i was thinking. Demilade: You don't have to blame yourself. I am glad i was there at the right time. Would you like to eat something? Adaugo: Not now, maybe later. **Demilade and Adaugo had deep conversations about life. They clicked off as friends instantly. Lydia rushes in to Adaugo's ward. Lydia: Ada, Ada...are you ok? **she holds on to her hand** Demilade how are you? Thank you for helping and staying with her. I went to the market, got stuck in traffic, a serious one at that, one petrol tanker caused the whole drama. Demilade: It's fine dear, I’m glad i was there at the right time. It could have been another story. Besides i didn't know Adaugo is a good chess player. She told me about her champion reign in her school. ***They all burst into laughter. Lydia: All hail the queen
Adaugo: Stop it jor..**she taps Lydia
**The mood in the ward brightened up a bit. Adaugo spent 3 days more in the hospital before she was discharged. "Circumstances takes you to places where you've never been before or where you don't want to be." Adaugo forged ahead on her recovery journey, gotten used to her wheelchair and helping Lydia with some chores too. She calls Demilade. Adaugo: Hello...good evening Demilade: Hi hi...Ada pepperoni, good evening Adaugo: You have started again, which one is pepperoni Demilade: You know wassup na, you are the pepper in town now. Before i forget, i really don't know if you would be interested in working with a NGO, The Circle of life, and their mission is providing better learning environment for homeless children. You will working as a project coordinator. Adaugo: Oh woow Demilade: A friend told me about the offer, i told him i have someone who would be very good in that position. I also explained your situation to him. Adaugo: What did he say? Demilade: He was super fine with it. In fact he was excited to have you be a part of their team. Adaugo: I'm speechless. I really dunno what to say. Demilade: It's nothing something to rush on. You have enough time to think about it. Besides your salary will be 149,960 naira (tax removed). Adaugo: Let me think about it. I will get back to you. Thank you so much for going the extra mile for me.
Demilade: Remember we are friends. We help each other move. You know a pepper such as you as needs to keep making awesome sauce out there. Adaugo: **laughs*** Demilade, you no go kill me. How did your day go? Demilade: well, bad. I misplaced my lunch money. I just couldn't cry. Adaugo: How? When? How did it happen? i am sorry about that. Demilade: Don't worry about the details. I am fine. Adaugo: You sure? Demilade: Yes i am. How about your day? Adaugo: went well, it was really great. I was able to accomplish some goals. Demilade: I am happy for you and for the progress. Adaugo: Thank you so much. Demilade: Do you mind if i take you out on a weekend amala date? Adaugo: Sure sure, i don't. Demilade: Great, i will keep you posted. I have to go now. Take care of yourself and my regards to Lydia. Adaugo: I will. Take care of you too. **Adaugo spends her night thinking about this next step presented to her. Is she ready to forge ahead? Go out of comfort zone? And series of other questions. She also discussed it with her friend, Lydia, who felt it was a right opportunity for her to regain her confidence.
**Papa papa papa...Adaugo screams out loud from yet another nightmare. SPirit of Mr Diemerechi: Adaugo, my darling daughter, there's no day i don't cry seeing everything that happened to you. I need you to rise and fight back at life. Give happiness and love a chance. Become successful and make a name for yourself. I won't be appearing as usual anymore. Remember my legacy and most important, the things i taught you. Remain humble, submit when necessary, and embrace peace all the time. Live life to your satisfaction. God will always be with you as long you pray to him. Live up to your name, Adaugo - daughter of the crown, be that princess of goodness, grow into a beautiful queen. I love you my daughter. Adaugo: **cries, papa don't go... **This time he was leaving her to be in a better place. She wakes with a panic attack, her heart pounding faster than a 450HP Ferrari. She was this close to passing out. But as the universe would have it, she's got a long journey ahead of her. From an accident, to close suicide...she was the cat with 9 lives. Adaugo goes back to sleep. It was morning already, she calls Demilade. Adaugo: Hello...good morning, hope i didn't wake you up? Demilade: No ooooo, good morning. Been awake since 5. I hope you are good? Adaugo: I should be fine. I am calling to tell you that i have accepted the work offer. Demilade: Oh great, i will inform my friend. Adaugo: Are we still seeing today? Demilade: Yes, can i come pick you by 4pm. Adaugo: That's fine by me. See you later. ***ends the call
**Adaugo told Lydia about this fun outing with Demilade. An atmosphere of jealousy suddenly rose up from Lydia, but she didn't show it. She gave a fake smile off to show approval to Adaugo. ***It was 4pm already, Demilade comes to pick Adaugo. He enters Lydia's house in hopes to see her before leaving. Lydia seemed uninterested in his courtesy visit. Demilade was just surprised about her reaction, nothing could be done. Demilade: Adaugo, are you ready? ***Here comes a beautiful lady in a polka dot dress with her wheelchair and a big smile. Demilade was beauty struck. He never saw this part coming. He was lost in the moment. Adaugo: Demilade oooooo, you better snap out. Demilade: Woooow, wooow, you look so beautiful. Adaugo: Thank you, big thanks to my friend for the makeover. Demilade: Oh woow. I really dunno what's wrong with her, she seems off. Adaugo: I really dunno too. Lydia we are going already. Lydia: Please bring back my friend early. Demilade: You trust me na.
**Demilade and Adaugo head off to Lufasi Park - Lekki Urban Forest Animal Shelter Initiative (is a unique Park located along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, It’s so hidden beside a residential Estate you won’t believe such existed on that stretch of road, once you get into the grounds of the Park you get a feeling of tranquillity. The beautiful Garden, the playground for kids, excellent tour guides and plenty of educative activities. Ideal place for families, private and group tours). **They sat in a gazebo within the park. Adaugo: I know you must be tired already from pushing me around. Demilade: Nope, i'm actually pumped up for more experience. **Adaugo gives off an engulfing smile. Demilade heart was beating faster than the speed of light. Adaugo: I'm really glad for this outing. It has been a long time i felt this kind of happiness. Demilade: I'm happy you are happy. **Adaugo moves her fingers and places them on Demilade's palm. Demilade: I see you, i really do see you...**he holds her hands, staring into her eyes. Adaugo: I SEE YOU TOO...thank you for happening in my life. You might not understand but you have become a light to always hold on to. I want to hold on to this light forever.
Demilade: Wooow, i guess it's time for me to open up. I am glad I’ve been responsible for someone, not because of the situation but how genuine i truly wanted to be involved. I saw you as a human regardless of everything that happened. Every day, i have come to like you more and more, i also wanted to have you to myself forever. So Adaugo, will you do me the honors of being my girlfriend? Adaugo: Yes, Demilade, i do. I hope the journey from here becomes great and a tale to tell daily. Demilade: I hope so too. Thank you for accepting me. **Demilade stands up to hug Adaugo, they had their first kiss. It was out of this world, they both felt the zing, smiled at each other and continued their adventure in the park. (Demilade's mind) Some say love it is a river that drowns the tender reed. Some say love it is a razor that leaves your soul to bleed. Some say love it is a hunger, an endless, aching need. I say love it is a flower, and you its only seed. It's the heart afraid of breaking that never learns to dance. It's the dream afraid of waking that never takes the chance. It's the one who won't be taken, who cannot seem to give. And the soul afraid of dying, that never learns to live. When the night has been too lonely, and the road has been too long. And you think that love is only, for the lucky and the strong. Just remember in the cold, far beneath the bitter snow, lies the seed that with the sun's love, In the spring, becomes the rose. Thank you for being my Rose that is love, Adaugo
**Demilade and Adaugo got back from turned out to be a memorable outing, a romantic afternoon. Just as the wise ones will say "There are three things sealed in the stars: love, people of love and the heart of love." Demilade: Thank you for making my day great. I assure you to be the best version of myself for you. Adaugo: **blushes** I know, i will be the best version of myself for us too. I pray God grants and guides that journey of forever for us. **The two of them shared a kiss. Demilade walks Adaugo into the house. Lydia was already fast asleep. The joy of Adaugo's face was too obvious. A miracle happened to her heart. She found love. Demilade bids her goodbye and off to his house. Demilade got home, had a cold shower and lays on his bed thinking about the wonderful moment he had today. He turns on his radio, the perfect song for the moment is being played. Demilade: Such a big move today, bold indeed but i'm my attempt was mutual. My sleep this night will be awesome. **he smirks to sleep, drowning in excitement** **Adaugo resumes work at TCOL (The circle of life) as their project coordinator. She meets the creative director, Mrs Fola-Reese. Mrs Fola-Reese: Hello, we are glad to have you here as a part of this big family. Adaugo: I am glad to be here. Mrs Fola-Reese: So i will be guiding you on your role here and provide all necessary tools. **She points at a space up**...so that's your office. Adaugo: Oh great.
Mrs Fola-Reese: Settle in, later i will introduce the rest of the house to you, probably during the meeting at 9am. **Adaugo calls her new found lover boy, Demilade Adaugo: Hey boo, how are you? Demilade: **chuckles** hi dear, i'm great and you? Adaugo: I am revved for work today. You need to see my office. Demilade: stop rubbing it on my face jor Adaugo: ***laughs ...jealous bobo. Well, i have to go, will check on you later. Demilade: take care. **It was 9am already at TCOL, Adaugo is to be introduced to the house. She meets Lance Ijene, Damian Yusuf, Iseoluwa Faith, Khaffi Kay, Olayemi Harrington, Joyce Okafor, Harriet Kadiri. These are vital members of her team as she would be be coordinating all activities by them. A wonderful first day at work it was for Adaugo and she looked forward to the next day also. **Back at Demilade's work place Mrs Ayinana: Lydia, Lydia...somebody call me Lydia. Lydia: **rushes to her office** Maaa Mrs Ayinana: Have you seen Demilade, please call him, both of you should come. Lydia: ok ma **Demilade and Lydia walks into Mrs Ayinana's office
Mrs Ayinana: I called you two here as you have been chosen for an official assignment in Shani, Borno state for 3 days (Shani is a Local Government Area of Borno State, Nigeria. Its headquarters are in the town of Shani). You will be representing this department at a United Nations humanitarian exercise in Borno. Demilade, you are in charge, so represent us well. Demilade: Woow...ok ma Lydia: **looks stunned Mrs Ayinana: before the end of the day, your travel allowances (hotel, flight, and feeding) will be paid. So find a way to book flight tickets for tomorrow. **hands Demilade a book**. This is a copy of the event. So that will be all. **Demilade and Lydia walks out of Mrs Ayinana's office with much excitement. They are going on a trip to a place they had once planned together. Lydia: can you see miracles happening? Demilade: My dear, i can see it happening? Lydia: was it not this time last year we were planning a road trip. Now we have all expenses paid for. Demilade: **laughs‌our week just got better. Let me call Adaugo **Demilade calls Adaugo to tell her about the event in Abuja. She sounds excited for him. Lydia: Can you call that your travel guy to help us to book tickets with Grey Skies, their services are super standard for the Nigerian community. Demilade: you know wassup. Let me call him.
**Demilade calls his travel agent to book their flight and hotel too. It is 4pm, time to go home. Demilade walks up to Lydia, Demilade: Are you set? Lydia: ...i think so **looks sad **Demilade noticing the expression on her face. Demilade: are you sure you are ok? Lydia: i will explain to you in the car. Derinola: alright. **They get to the car, entered and Demilade drives off Demilade: can you now tell me what happened to you? Lydia: errrrrrm...errrrm...i don't know if i will be able to go tomorrow. Demilade: Why? Did something happen? Lydia: Nothing really, i just have a bad feeling about something happening. Demilade: sigh...nothing will happen ok by God's grace. We will get there and leave safely too. Please i need you to cheer up and we can both pray when we get home, ok? Lydia: ok...**lightens her face a little Demilade: I just know that we will do what is required of us and leave there peacefully. God is on our side.
**After 1 hour driving in Lagos traffic, they finally got home. Demilade drops Lydia at her house and continues to his own place. They prepare for their journey tomorrow. 9am, Demilade and Lydia met at the airport. After passing all the necessary checks, they board the flight to Borno state. The 1 hour flight felt like a whole day for Demilade. They finally arrive in Borno state. The weather was not friendly as it was sunny. They boarded a taxi to Shani. Shani is a very welcoming community. As the taxi dropped Demilade and Lydia at their lodge, children ran to meet them singing in their native songs. The joy on their faces as they helped them carry their luggage. Shani is known for its fish market. Demilade and Lydia finally settled in their lodge. Lydia: What a journey‌who would know such a community exists in this part of the country Demilade: **call Mrs Ayinana telling her about their arrival to the place. Lydia, have you called your friend, Adaugo? Lydia: I am about doing that...**she calls Adaugo, who felt relieved after hearing her voice. Demilade: By 6pm, we will go to the UN office and report for the programme. Meanwhile we should freshen and rest ourselves. Lydia: You are right.
**They both rested till it was 6pm. Demilade and Lydia stepped out to the UN office, the children ran to meet them, and they all seemed excited. Demilade and Lydia finally got to the UN office. They were ushered by a woman, Aisha Yahari. Aisha Yahari: Are you the two we are expecting from Lagos? Welcome. I'm Aisha Yahari, the coordinator of this project. Demilade & Lydia: Thank you. We're glad to be here too. Aisha Yahari: We are just about to brief everyone on the details of what we are to do here. So please, find a seat and enjoy yourselves. **Demilade & Lydia found themselves seats amidst 10 other people. The briefing began. It went on for an hour. Everyone in the room were handed documents to go through and tool boxes to get familiar with ahead of tomorrow. After the necessary introductions, everyone went to the various lodge to sleep. The next day: It is 7am, a brand new day for the big project to begin. Demilade, Lydia and the rest of the group were to gather at the city centre for a short briefing by Aisha Yahari. Then the worse happens, a bomb was set off by a suicide bomber in Shani market. **After the incident happened, the Nigerian army came to fight off the insurgents who decided to set up their camp. It was a massacre. No one saw this coming. The Nigerian Red Cross came into action to help those badly injured. Only two of the UN camp survived, the rest of them including Aisha Yahari died. An emergency hospital was set up. The news had gone round the country with the president commenting on it.
**The lodge Demilade and Lydia stayed was affected by the impact of the blast, the bathroom area of their room collapsed and Demilade was having his bath at the time of the incident. Lydia: **rushes to help him...Demilade Demilade Demilade **he got caught under the rumble and had passed. **Lydia shouts for help Lydia: someone help, help me ***she runs outside after her attempt to lift the rumbles failed. She finally founds someone, a Soldier. Lydia: Uncle please help me, my friend has been injured. Soldier: take me there ***he calls two of his colleagues to assist. **They got to where Demilade was stuck and brought him out of the ruins. He passed out. He was rushed to the emergency hospital for help. Lydia suffered just a scratch on the back of her and was attended to by the available nurse. It has been over 3 hours since Demilade passed out, his vitals were normal and all he needed was to wake up. Adaugo having heard the news, calls Demilade but his number didn't through. She tries Lydia’s number, and she picks. Adaugo: Lydia, how are you? i heard the news, were you people affected? Lydia: It is a disaster over here. I am fine but Demilade isn't. Adaugo: ***panics*** what happened?
**Lydia explains what happened but also assured Adaugo that he is recovering. Lydia and Demilade went back to Lagos after it took Demilade two weeks to recover from the injuries he sustained. He was glad he didnt break his spine but he suffered PTSD - post traumatic stress disorder (A disorder characterised by failure to recover after experiencing or witnessing a terrifying event. The condition may last months or years, with triggers that can bring back memories of the trauma accompanied by intense emotional and physical reactions). Any shock or loud sounds always relive that moment for him. He hardly sleeps at night because of that incident.
**After every storm, the sun always finds its way through the clouds. Demilade resumed work 3 months later. It was a tough decision for him, he had earlier wanted to quit. His girlfriend Adaugo had been a miracle to him despite her disability. Adaugo: **calls Demilade you gotten to work Demilade: Yes, the whole department welcomed me with gladness. Adaugo: Please i need you to be just fine. Let me call Lydia to help look after you. Demilade: Thanks dear, do have a wonderful day ahead. I love you. Adaugo: I love you too **call ends
**They say "all stories whether good or bad must come to an end" and another saying goes "whatever life presents to you attend to it with all the seriousness". It has been over 2 years since Adaugo and Demilade agreed on the forever journey and the ship attracted a lot of admirations from their friends, work mates and families. Everybody wanted them to get married as soon as possible.
As it was in the Beginning True love presents itself more than twice in a timeline so is the story of Demilade and Adaugo. Their story was written 211 years ago, 1808 in the western lands of Spain, Lanzarote. The story of Adrian and Adriana. **Adrian was a young poor farmer who worked hard to make sure that his father and mother ate daily. They own a cattle whose milk are being collected and he travels down to the neighboring city center to sell them. Adriana, the daughter of the Priest of St Luzaroti church, the fairest of all maidens in the village of Lanzarotti. Her father never let her go out. Adrian and Adriana met in a strange manner. One night Adrian was on his way back from selling the dairy products from his farm, he heard a strange sound from the church. He stops to confirm, there he saw someone trying to escape through the window of the mission house. He decides to challenge the individual Adrian: ¿Quién es ese? estás tratando de robar de la iglesia? Hoy estás atrapado. (Who is that? you are trying to steal from the church? today you are caught.)
**The individual succeeded in coming down from the window. It turned out to be Adriana Adriana: No, solo estaba tratando de salir de la casa por la ventana (No, i was just trying to leave the house through the window). Adrian: Oh ok Lo siento. Entonces, ¿a dónde te diriges a esta hora de la noche? (Oh ok. I am sorry. So where are you heading by this time of the night) Adriana: Realmente no lo se. ¿Puedes sugerir un lugar? (I really don't know. Can you suggest a place?) Adrian: ¿Te gustaría ver mi granja? (Would like to see my farm?) Adriana: Sí, siempre y cuando me implique irme de aquí. (Yes, as long as it involves me leaving here) **That was how their friendship started. Adriana's father was never in support of the friendship. He made sure Adriana was dealt with for breaking his rules. In the process of punishing Adrian too, he lost a leg. Adriana's father also locked up Adrian's old parents in prison. None of these stopped them from loving each other deeply. Adriana made sure she found a way to see Adrian in his condition. One night, they planned to run away, Adrian was waiting for Adriana at the city border. She had doubts about her decision at first because of the thought of leaving her father. But she remembered how happy her moments with Adrian was, it was never to be found. She took the bold step of sneaking through the window, meets up Adrian and they joined a van going to the city center. There, they got married.
(i vow to love you exceedingly in all your forms. I promise that our love will be written over and over in sands of time. To stand by you no matter the challenges that we will face together and find home in ourselves) Adriana: Prometo abrazarte con todo el cuidado, amor, ser paciente y hablar con amabilidad a tu corazón. Para compartir el vacío del vasto espacio de este mundo contigo. (I vow to hold you with all the care, love, to be be patient and speak in kindness to your heart. To share the emptiness of the vast space of this world with you)
**Back to the present day, 2019 Demilade: Dad, i found someone i want to spend the rest of my life with. I want to marry her. Mr Derin: oh, proud of you my son. What"s this young woman's name, when do i meet her? Demilade: Adaugo, she's an orphan. Mr Derin: And you sure about your decision? Demilade: Yes, dad. With all my heart. I need something from you. Mr Derin: What is that? Demilade: I need mum's ring and your blessings to go ahead. Mr Derin: I know Josephine will be proud of you in heaven. I give you all my blessings. Let me get you the ring.
**Mr Derin hands over the ring and blesses him as Demilade had planned the perfect engagement scene. He had earlier told Adaugo to meet him at his favorite garden, telling her he had something important to discuss. They both met there. Adaugo: So what's that important thing you had me running down here for? Demilade: ....*goes down on his knee, slowly sliding out the ring box. He opens it. Then his favorite music starts playing in the background **Immediately Adaugo saw the box, she knew what was happening. She was tearing up already. Demilade: Adaugo, my one true heart. The past few years of knowing you has been the best part of me. Can't say how the days will unfold, can't change what the future may hold. But I want you in it, every hour, every minute. This world can race by far too fast, hard to see while it's all flying past. But it's clear now, when you're standing here now. I am meant to be, wherever you are next to me. All I want do is, come running home to you. And all my life I promise to keep running home to you. And I could see it right from the start. That you would be, be my light in the dark. You gave me no other choice but to love you. Yes, i love you, will you marry me? Adaugo: **shedding tears of joy....Yes yes, i will. **Demilade slips the ring into Adaugo's finger.
Adaugo: I vow to help you love life, to always hold you with tenderness, to have the patience that love demands, to speak when words are needed, and to share the silence when they are not, to agree to disagree about red velvet cake, to live within the warmth of your heart, and always call it home. Demilade: I vow to fiercely love you in all your forms, now and forever. I promise to never forget that this is a once in a lifetime love. And to always know in the deepest part of my soul that no matter what challenges might carry us apart, we will always find our way back to each other. **They kissed
THE END.
