NATURE FOR ALL Annual Report 2023

Letter from Our Director

For 48 years, Irvine has been a leader in environmental education, both locally and nationally, as we teach and inspire others to explore, respect, and protect nature. Approaching our 50th anniversary, a strategic priority for Irvine is to increase access and provide a community resource around education and conservation where ALL are welcome.

We strive to make each visitor, volunteer, or program participant comfortable engaging with nature regardless of experience, background, or interest — helping all community members thrive outside — and it is both a privilege and responsibility to share the joy and importance of our environment and its connection to each of us.

This year, we have made enhancements to our property, introduced new programs, and increased access to nature in a variety of ways, including the start of Free Fridays generously funded by The Orokawa Foundation. Throughout the pages of this year’s annual report, we are pleased to share highlights of these efforts.

We set out to deliver Nature For All for our community, and I am pleased to report that we’ve been successful in making new nature connections for many — largely due to you, our loyal members, and supporters.

We are thrilled to sponsor access to the Irvine Nature Center for families throughout the Baltimore region. We believe firmly in supporting the wellness of all individuals, an integral component of which is time spent outdoors. We are deeply grateful to Irvine and its staff for their tireless efforts in creating an oasis so unique and so special right here in Baltimore County.

It is a great honor to partner with Irvine as we work to improve the lives of all members of our community.

5,687 AREA STUDENTS PARTICIPATED in Irvine’s Field Trips, Nature in the Classroom, and Eco-Explorers, including 81 grant-funded programs for Title 1 schools.

632 CHILDREN experienced the benefits of learning in nature, in our Nature Preschool, Little Birds, and Earth Friends Outdoors Homeschool programs.

711 VOLUNTEERS contributed to projects on our property and our programs.

7,458 PARTICIPANTS of all ages engaged in one of Irvine’s nature programs.

OVER 35,000 UNIQUE VISITORS from around the state spent time in nature at Irvine.

1,731 TODDLERS AND THEIR CAREGIVERS enjoyed stories, music, movement, and an animal encounter during Irvine’s FREE Tales & Tails story time.

1,830 POUNDS OF TRASH WERE REMOVED from nearby roadways as part of Project Clean Stream.

Through Our Programs

Irvine’s robust environmental education programs propel our mission of inspiring people of all ages and backgrounds to explore, respect, and protect nature. Our talented team of educators work diligently to plan, prepare, and deliver lessons that resonate with all learners. Their passion and devotion provide students and program participants with the knowledge to develop a genuine appreciation and love of nature that inspires nurturing of our planet.

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

Irvine’s free weekly Tales and Tails environmental literacy program has been a signature community builder. Each week we welcome little ones along with their parents, grandparents, and caregivers to our Outdoor Classroom for music, stories, and animal encounters.

Irvine’s early childhood educators create rich relationships with their students in Little Birds, Earth Friends Outdoors Homeschool, and The Nature Preschool. In these semester-long classes, children engage in hikes, investigations, crafts, and nature-inspired lessons. Each age group continues to fill to capacity as families value learning at Irvine.

Our award-winning Nature Preschool served 56 students, a fifth of whom received financial aid through our Woodpecker Tuition Assistance Program (TAP), thanks to the generosity of the Medicine Bow Fund.

SCHOOL PROGRAMS

Thanks to the support of the Thomas Wilson Foundation, T. Rowe Price Foundation, Merritt Properties, and State of Maryland State-Aided Institutions Program, Irvine delivered nature to more students through grant-funded field trips for Title I schools in our region. Over the past year, our educators served 2,958 students for nature field trips; half of these field trips were grant-funded. For school-aged children these immersive academic experiences can be life changing; for many, a first introduction to the natural world and to animals. Students from community organizations and academic institutions such as Bridging the Gap, Holistic Life Foundation, Next One Up, and St. Vincent de Paul Head Start were among the many from underresourced neighborhoods in Baltimore City who spent time outdoors on our campus.

You have improved my child’s life so much!
And we are so happy that she had access to this life-changing experience!

SUMMER NATURE CAMP

Under the direction of our new Director of Nature Camps, Colby Warner, over 650 campers soaked up the summer at Irvine enjoying fun-filled, nature-based adventures on our property. We are grateful to our Summer Camp sponsors: Ortho Maryland, David Ross Orthodontics, Davey Mitigation, and Northwest Hospital. Thanks to several generous individual donors in addition to the Shawe Family Foundation and The Dillon Fund, we were able to offer 18 camp scholarships to students in nearby Reisterstown and Glyndon.

Irvine’s programming is the best children’s programming we have ever seen, and we continue to have this opinion after three years spent at summer camp.

Adult Programs

This past year, we continued our popular adult programs including the monthly Eat, Drink, and Learn speaker series sponsored by Lumina Solar, seasonal Lunch and Learns, and many weekend learning programs such as Pine Needle Basket and Natural Wreath Making.

Irvine continues its Health and Wellness through Nature program and is grateful to Qigong and Tai Chi leader Mary Pinkard for conducting classes to inspire others through holistic wellness. Mary and her team are grounded in their passion for helping adults deepen their connections with nature through meditative motions of body, mind, and spirit.

Eat, Drink and Learn combines the best of so many worlds – socializing with other Irvine supporters and meeting new friends, sharing a top-notch meal, enjoying clever (and tasty!) drinks, and being introduced to experts in a variety of fields. Each speaker is working on a project that has meaningful and lasting impacts on the natural world around us. I have invited many to EDL over the years. Everyone always has a wonderful time – many of them have become repeat subscribers themselves!

At Our Events

Just as Irvine offers a wide array of programs and activities for all ages on our property, we also host a multitude of events throughout the year. Like our nature programs, our events serve as community builders for people to come together.

NATIVE PLANT SALE AND WORKSHOP

Hundreds of plant lovers made their way to Irvine on a beautiful Saturday in May to shop the wide variety of native plants from several different expert growers and attend informative workshops. Attendees could even build their own planter to attract pollinators throughout the season. Irvine is grateful to Biohabitats for underwriting this event.

PUMPKINS ON THE GREEN

Last October, our signature annual fundraiser, Pumpkins on the Green welcomed over 50 corporate sponsors, headlined by M&T Bank, Constellation and Arbor Valley. Sponsors, VIP Underwriters, and guests gathered on a cool autumn evening for drinks, dinner, live music from the Jody West Band, and a fabulous silent auction. We are grateful to all of our event sponsors, as well as our chairs, Embry and Harris Peace, Hanna and Jeff Fountain, and Kiley and Will Mellor, and an enthusiastic host committee.

FAMILY EVENTS

Irvine hosted many weekend events this past year including our annual Maple Magic, Holidays with Hoot, and Springfest to create easy access for families to enjoy seasonal festivities while spending time in nature. These events welcomed children and adults from around the community, many for the first time.

NEW PROGRAMS

In October, we introduced our first Indigenous People’s Day community event to honor the many contributions of Maryland’s First People. This year, we also introduced PRIDE Outside for teens and are preparing to become a local chapter of LGBT Outdoors, a national organization that is connecting the LGBTQ+ community to the outdoors and its members to one another.

On Our Property

Irvine provides an extraordinary resource and destination for outdoor nature exploration and education. First time visitors are often surprised to find our special gem of 211-acres of preserved land in Baltimore County. With eight miles of trails through wetlands, forests, and meadows, there is constant upkeep and preservation required to welcome visitors of all ages.

WEDDING POINT

On Earth Day, a group of over 150 local real estate professionals from 40 different organizations, NAIOP Maryland, spent many hours at Irvine on an unusually hot spring day building a new pergola and arbor at Wedding Point, mulching 325 linear yards of the Understory Loop Trail, reseeding our Pollinator Meadow with over 100 pounds of native plant seed, and removing 33 trash bags of garlic mustard weed from our trails. In addition to their volunteer day of service, NAIOP made a substantial contribution to Irvine for the purchase of solar panels for our barn which will provide much-needed electricity for the campsite area.

Partnering with Irvine Nature Center was the perfect opportunity for our over 150 volunteers to connect with nature and to provide a meaningful day of service. We appreciate the staff and their efforts to create a program day that enabled our volunteers to have significant and positive impact on our watershed.

NATIVE AMERICAN EDUCATIONAL SITE

Irvine’s unique and authentic Native American Educational Site was originally constructed in 2016 with the cooperation of the Baltimore American Indian Center, Stevenson University, and primitive naturalist and educator, Jeff Gottlieb. Recognizing the original stewards of our land, the Site offers visitors and students a glimpse at the dwellings, structures, and tools used by the First Americans. A primary structure at the site, our longhouse, was in desperate need of repair. In late May, Jeff Gottlieb dismantled and rebuilt it reusing natural materials and harvested tulip poplar bark. Numerous individual volunteers and groups rolled up their sleeves to be a part of this effort and learned a lot of new skills in the process.

OUTDOOR CLASSROOM

Another principal feature on our property is our Outdoor Classroom. This unique space is used by our early childhood programs including The Nature Preschool during the week, and for weekend birthday parties and families who visit year-round. The centerpiece of the Outdoor Classroom is the stage, which is used for play and for performances, including Tales and Tails. Due to constant weather exposure, the stage needed major renovations. In memory of their colleague Michael B. Klein, WPM Real Estate Management employees and volunteers rebuilt the stage to make it bigger, better, and sturdier.

TRAILS

Kyle Gillen, our Natural Resources Manager, works yearround to ensure that our trails are safe and accessible for our visitors and program participants. With the help of volunteers and the summer trail crew, the group labored through this year’s unprecedented heat and humidity monitoring trail conditions, clearing debris, removing invasive species, and planting natives throughout our property.

In Our Community

Two of Irvine’s main outreach programs that take nature into schools and classrooms are Eco-Explorers After-School Nature Club and Nature in the Classroom.

Both are engaging, immersive, and fun learning opportunities that connect young learners, many from under-resourced areas in our region, to the benefits of our natural world. An integral part of both programs is showcasing our animal ambassadors to teach students about their purpose, habitats, and living environments.

In the past year, Irvine’s educators delivered Nature in the Classroom to 2,134 students and our Eco-Explorers afterschool club to 595 students in Baltimore County, Baltimore City and Carroll County. Irvine is most grateful to the Galanthus Foundation, Venable Foundation, the Fancy Hill Foundation, and Thomas Wilson Foundation for supporting these enriching and impactful academic programs.

Many of our families do not have consistent transportation, or the financial means, to expose their children to opportunities outside of school and home. Irvine’s EcoExplorers program gives students hands-on experiences and opportunities to learn about their local environment.

Reisterstown Elementary School

PUBLIC OUTREACH

Just as we take our nature programming to classrooms, we do the same in the community to build connections and invite neighbors to Irvine’s property and programs. With animals in tow, Irvine makes frequent appearances at area farmers markets and festivals.

Through a partnership with Greenberg Gibbons, a new corporate underwriter, Irvine took part in Tuesday Tots at Kenilworth Mall and a family concert at Hunt Valley Towne Center, two of their retail properties.

Irvine’s environmental educators also present nature and animal programs at local libraries, senior centers, retirement communities, and garden club meetings.

PROJECT CLEAN STREAM

1,830 pounds of trash – 60 trash bags, 21 tires, 6 road signs, various scraps of metal, an old swing set, and about a dozen cinderblocks – that is what 23 volunteers from the local wealth management company The StepStone Group, along with Irvine staff, collected on Garrison Forest Road and Crondall Lane in Owings Mills on Irvine’s Project Clean Stream Day in April. This annual watershedwide cleanup initiative was started by Irvine in 1977 and has continued every year since that time.

Donors

Thank you to our loyal and generous donors for your support in helping Irvine provide Nature for All on our property and in the community over the past year. A special thank you to our Trailblazers, Irvine’s Leadership Giving Society, for supporting our mission at the highest level.
