Welcome to the Autumn edition of The Overflow.

Hello again,

What a long hot summer we’ve had and it’s extended into the autumn season. It’s been a busy season for the industry and the talk of the town is rain or the lack of it. It's becoming concerning for all parties in the industry. I’ve watched the Bureau of Meteorology climate outlook and it is looking like above-average temperatures and below-average rainfall are in the forecast. It seems we may all soon find ourselves resorting to rain dancing soon.

Our primary focus for the last month has been on Conference deadlines and managing some significant staff movements.

We’ve installed a new irrigation system at two of our sporting ovals in the City of Cockburn, using poly plow method. This is less invasive than traditional trenching and enables sporting clubs to continue to train and play scheduled games on it.

Recovery of the turf and lack of trench settlement has been well worth the installation method.

The conference program features three main rooms hosting two concurrent conference streams and an "Irrigation Australia Workshops" stream.

During the first quarterly meeting of 2024, we engaged with stakeholders Water Corporation. It was encouraging to receive positive feedback on both the Spring Irrigation Checkup and the Weather-Based Irrigation Controller Rebate. We anticipate further discussions on how the members of the Waterwise Programs can collaborate with the Water Corporation to support upcoming initiatives.

The irrigation installation at The Vines golf course is well underway and I am looking forward to the member event scheduled for 16th May to see the process of the mainline and laterals across the 18 holes. The Members Interest Committee will convene to identify future event locations for member events in 2024. Stay tuned for upcoming invitations in your inbox!

Invitations have been sent to all those successful in being offered presentation spots for the conference, we’ve released a preliminary program, and opened early bird registrations.

Thanks again to our incredible national committee, who have volunteered countless hours to help review and advise.

Presentations are grouped into three sub-themes: Governance, Investment, and Capacity Development, covering topics such as climate-driven infrastructure, innovative technologies, and community engagement. Keynotes and panel sessions will be updated regularly, with poster presentations and interactive opportunities during lunch breaks. Additional workshops and activities, including technical tours, are offered for delegates, with themed tours exploring irrigation projects and case studies.

Exhibition sales are progressing well but there are plenty of booths and sponsorship opportunities still available – our exhibitors and sponsors are the primary reason we are able to host these events and thanks again to the growing list who’ve already committed to supporting our industry. This is the last opportunity to be a major part of an international irrigation and drainage conference for a while – don’t miss out.

Finally, I’d again like to acknowledge the huge contribution Tracy Martin made during her time with Irrigation Australia.

Her departure has led to a few other changes including the investigation of a new office space, with details to be confirmed soon. In addition, congratulations to Bec New who has taken over the National Memberships Manager role (still with a chunk of time devoted to oversight of WA projects and activities) and welcome to Abby McCorriston, who has recently been recruited into a new administrative support role based in Perth.

Regional Update

As the year races by, the transition to cooler weather is evident, with recent rains breaking the grip of scorching temperatures. Amidst these shifts, the irrigation industry is experiencing unprecedented activity, underscoring the importance of our commitment to sustaining and enhancing customer investments over time.

Our WA Regional Committee convenes monthly to assess regional endeavours, with a particular focus on our collaborations with the Department of Water & Environmental Regulation and Water Corporation.

Mark your calendars for Thursday 16th May 2024, as we gather for the first WA Members Breakfast at The Vines Golf Course to celebrate the successful completion of stage two: the irrigation system replacement for the initial 18 holes. This event, our second at this scenic venue, follows last year's triumph in May 2023, commemorating stage one's pump station upgrade.

Staff Movement in WA Office As communicated by our CEO, Dave Cameron, we bid farewell to Tracy Martin, concluding her remarkable journey of over 15 years with Irrigation Australia. As Tracy sets sail for new horizons, we sincerely appreciate her dedicated service and extend our best wishes for her future endeavours.

The WA team remains committed to providing consistent services, dedicated to advancing the irrigation industry in WA. This involves administering and promoting Waterwise initiatives, training sessions, and hosting member events, all with the valued support of our stakeholders.

This comprehensive resource hub is tailored to serve the needs of our members and the broader community, offering vital information on diverse Waterwise initiatives and valuable resources. From practical tips on water conservation to educational materials on sustainable practices, our website is your go-to destination for all things water-wise.

These initiatives aim to support households in the maintenance of their lawns and gardens while reducing water consumption. The Waterwise Sprinkler Checks have now closed and initial feedback from Water Corporation is that the program was a success with all 2,000 allocations being taken up.

The Weather-Based Irrigation Controller Rebate is close to being closed, as at the time of writing this for inclusion, only 200 applications remain.

Irrigation Australia will be working with Water Corporation throughout the year to discuss future initiatives for the 2024/2025 irrigation season and we will advise members on those outcomes in due course.

Irrigation Australia successfully engaged with the community through promotional efforts on radio station RTRFM92.1, leveraging Community Service Announcements (CSAs) to promote the Waterwise Programs website. Running from December through February 2024, this initiative yielded significant increases in customer engagement directly through the website, marking it a resounding success.

Furthermore, we've secured advertising space in the annual magazine of the Perth Garden Festival. This platform allows us to showcase the new website and emphasise sprinkler run times to the wider community. Our Waterwise sub-committee remains proactive in seeking out additional advertising opportunities. Stay tuned for further updates as we explore additional avenues to promote Waterwise Programs.

Case study commencement March 2024.

Case Study – Turf Transformation with the City of Armadale Now that we had the Vortex Water Generator it was time to put it to the test to gather some data and see these tangible results firsthand. After speaking with the City of Armadale in Western Australia, (The City) and listening to their water initiative plans, we agreed that a case study conducted within The City would be a testament to the effectiveness of Vortex Generators.

It is encouraging to see Local Government embracing new technology on such a critical issue and taking some progressive and positive steps to be leaders in water conservation. The following is a great example of partnering with The City and other water industry specialists to trial and showcase how embracing Vortex Technology maximises every millimetre of applied water.

Gwynne Park within The City was identified as the preferred location to carry out the case study. Gwynne Park is a 13-hectare, Kikuyu grassed, multiuse sporting precinct. In early March 2024 we commenced the 12-month case study through the supply and installation of a 100mm Vortex Water Generator and reduced the already

programmed water times by 25%.

The City’s feedback indicates that the oval condition has shown no deterioration to the turf since the installation of the Vortex Water Generator, whilst dropping back the watering time by 25%. The velocity of the water coming out of the sprinkler is higher than when the irrigation was originally installed, and this has led to an increase in coverage from the sprinklers.

Walk the Talk

Through the event we shared how these progressive cucumber growers have implemented the ‘one percenter’ philosophy across their farm production systems for significant business gains.

While radical change is sometimes necessary to impact business growth, the consistent pursuit of small, continuous and incremental improvements – the ‘one-percenters’ across a business – can reinforce the core of a business and establish new groundwork for long-term profitability and innovation.

Groundwater refill waning as WA's climate dries Recharge of Perth’s groundwater by rainfall has fallen by up to 70 per cent over the past half-century, according to a new study led by The University of Western Australia.

Forty per cent of Perth’s drinking water is supplied by groundwater, which is also used for agriculture, private gardens and public open spaces, and is concentrated in three large aquifers which are refilled by rain in a process known as ‘recharge’.

Researchers from UWA, the Western Australian Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) and Edith Cowan University reviewed recharge data from the Gnangara groundwater system of the Swan Coastal Plain and a new site near Gingin for their study in the Journal of Hydrology.

They found winters have become shorter since the 1960s, with fewer and weaker storms, significantly impacting recharge.

Dr Simone Gelsinari, research associate from UWA’s School of Engineering, who led the study, revealed the Gnangara system had experienced a threefold drop in recharge compared to declining rainfall, while in Perth’s endangered Banksia woodlands, recharge had fallen by up to 70 per cent.

“Our findings suggest groundwater aquifers in climates like Perth’s are particularly vulnerable to climate change, and may see larger recharge declines, as soil needs to be saturated with rain before water trickles down to aquifer level,” Dr Gelsinari said.

“The long-term data enabled us to take a significant step forward in understanding groundwater recharge and we look forward to continuing our research with this nation-leading, collaborative monitoring network.”

Joel Hall, co-author and Principal Environmental Modeller at DWER’s Aquatic Science Branch, said understanding groundwater refill was vital to effectively manage competing demands from water users and the environment.

“Partnerships between water managers and researchers are more important than ever to help us meet this challenge in our drying climate,” Mr Hall said.

The work is part of a major initiative led by DWER’s State Groundwater Investigation Program, the ‘Recharge Estimation Collaboration/Recharge in a Changing Climate’ project, a collaboration between government, industry and academic research.

Data collected at the Gingin TERN Ecosystems Supersite, and infrastructure at the site, were funded by the Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network (TERN), an Australian Government NCRIS-enabled project.

Waangaamaap – Serpentine groundwater allocation statement released Groundwater allocation limits have been revised in response to ongoing declines in groundwater levels due to reduced rainfall in the Serpentine region, which is located 30 kilometres south of Perth.

Climate change has caused a significant reduction in rainfall in the Waangaamaap – Serpentine groundwater statement area. Average annual rainfall in the area has declined by about 10 per cent since 1975.

During the period 1945 -1974 average rainfall was 870 mm/year, while between 1975 - 2022 it has dropped to 780 mm/year. As a result, rainfall recharge to groundwater is now significantly less. Future climate projections for the area show average annual rainfall could fall to 680 mm/ year beyond 2030.

The updated limits for the Serpentine groundwater area and the Keysbrook subarea of the Stakehill groundwater area are contained in the new Waangaamaap – Serpentine groundwater allocation statement, which was released on 7 March 2024.

The changes to allocation limits included consideration of the technical studies completed as part of the Peel Integrated Water Initiative (PIWI). These found that climate change had already affected the availability of surface and groundwater resources in the area.

The updated allocation limits will reduce the availability of groundwater in most of the Superficial and Leederville aquifer resources. The new allocation limits do not affect the entitlements of existing groundwater licence holders.

The revised allocation limits will support improved water security for current local water users, as well as the protection of our important wetlands and bushland.

With less groundwater available for additional water supplies, future water demands in this region will increasingly involve the need for improving water use efficiency, water licence trading, and in some cases, consideration of alternative sources of water.

“The Waangaamaap – Serpentine groundwater allocation statement is part of Kep Katitjin – Gabi Kaadadjan – Waterwise Perth Action Plan 2, which aims to establish leading waterwise communities for Boorloo (Perth) and Bindjareb (Peel) by 2030,” Alisia Lampropoulos, Senior Environmental Officer said.

Waterwise garden designs tick all the boxes Designing a new garden that is fit for Western Australia’s climate can be challenging. How do you balance the need for a waterwise and sustainable landscape, with bright, luscious foliage and flowers? Water Corporation’s new garden designs has a front garden design to suit every taste and region across the state.

Water Corporation commissioned Tim Davies Landscaping to produce 16 garden and verge designs for use across three regions in WA – Perth/South West, Mid West, and North West. The garden design styles include cottage, coastal, Mediterranean, tropical and arid depending on the region.

Each of the front garden designs includes a render of the façade, closeup and plan. The downloadable PDF shopping list outlines the plants used (including botanical and common names) and any other supplies required needed to create the look. The designs also break each garden into hydrozones, with information on how often each zone requires watering. Soil preparation and planting tips are also available on the Water Corporation webpages.

The native garden design features banksia, kangaroo paw, grevillea, emu bush shrubs and groundcovers with tuckaroo trees for year-round colour in the front garden.

Mid West garden designs With a warmer climate and different soil types than the Perth/South West region, plants for the Mid West designs were chosen for their sun hardiness and attractiveness.

Mid West coastal design

The native garden design includes kangaroo paws, catspaw and purple flag strappy plants combined with the silver cassia and grevillea shrubs while the groundcovers include Gingin gem, snakebush, emu bush and running postman. The weeping paperbark and coral gum provide shade on the driveway.

The coastal garden design has grass trees and coastal rosemary as accent plants with Geraldton wax, sandplain banksia, coastal rosemary Jervis gem and coastal daisy bush combined with a variety of groundcovers.

The Mediterranean design uses bergamot orange and olive trees with passionfruit and bougainvillea climbers with productive shrubs and groundcovers including pomegranate, French lavender, thyme and rosemary.

The arid garden design requires little care and maintenance with agave as accent plants, Swan River myrtle and fan flower shrubs, mulga and little ghost gum trees.

Enhancing Urban and Peri-Urban Drainage Modelling: Introducing a Comprehensive Code of Practice

As urbanisation progresses, the management of stormwater and groundwater becomes increasingly vital. Recognising this urgency, the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia (IPWEA) in collaboration with Engineers Australia and Stormwater WA, has embarked on a pioneering journey to develop a Code of Practice for Urban and Peri-Urban Drainage Modelling. Spearheaded by Ian Daniels, President of IPWEA, this initiative aims to address critical gaps in current practices and provide comprehensive guidelines for improved drainage modelling.

The Need for a Code of Practice The genesis of this endeavour traces back to a workshop held at the University of Western Australia in February 2020, where the imperative for a standardised approach to model build, verification, and reporting was underscored. Recommendation 4 emerged from this workshop, advocating for the preparation of a 'code of practice' to guide model development, particularly emphasising guidance for different scales, planning decisions, and risk assessment.

Stakeholders including SWA, Engineers Australia, and IPWEA, along with input from various governmental and industry bodies, united to champion this cause.

Addressing Competence Gaps The Perth and Peel stormwater and groundwater management workshop in October 2021 shed light on critical

competency gaps within the industry.

These gaps ranged from understanding groundwater dynamics to applying climate change considerations in modelling. The consensus was clear: a unified approach to modelling, review, and approval processes was imperative. Additionally, managing data limitations and defining survey methodologies emerged as pressing challenges.

Ensuring proper maintenance of your orchard irrigation system is key to protecting your income and remaining competitive.

In the world of farming, investing in orchards and permanent crops is like planting seeds for long-term success— think a decade or even up to 50 years!

Planning is key, and having a solid business strategy that considers crop and variety, climate, terrain, water sources, and soil data is crucial.

Creating a reliable irrigation system is a big part of this plan. This involves getting fields ready, designing the system, and building proper drainage. The irrigation system covers everything from controlling the water source to fertigation, the pipe network, and drippers for each tree. Farmers who take good care of these systems see a significant impact on their profits.

Once the trees are planted, some things are out of a farmer's hands—like climate and tree DNA. But assuming proper crop protection is in place, farmers can control factors like pruning and irrigation-chemigation to improve yields.

Irrigation systems typically have three main parts:

factors including the water source, product quality, and maintenance.

1. Head Control (roughly 20% of the cost): This includes the pump, filter, valve, fertigation and automation and can last around 15 years.

Ongoing monitoring of dripper uniformity and replacing them when needed is important. Each tree is a production unit, and a reliable dripper is crucial for water and nutrient supply.

2. Pipeline Network (approximately 50% of the cost): Made mostly of PVC and HDPE, it can last around 50 years.

3. Drip Lines (around 30% of the cost): The part that feeds the trees.

The coefficient of variation is a technical term that essentially says that water distribution should not only be consistent in quantity, but also evenly spread across drippers and the root system.

There are three main methods to evaluate your dripline uniformity: 1. Flow Rate Monitoring: System flow rate from the flow meter, collect water samples from different spots along the dripline or blocks and measure dripper flow rate. Compare these numbers to what the system was designed for and the variation between the drippers.

When you decide to replace the drip laterals in your orchard, consider using closer drip line emitter spacing. Closer drip line spacing, with more drippers per tree, results in denser feeding roots and support for improved crop yields. Upgrading the dripline before the irrigation season starts is the

2. Pressure Measurement: Think of this like checking your system's blood pressure or car tyres. A pressure gauge is an easy way to check your system - it is visual and low-cost (it needs replacing when it is stuck), and you should install all blocks with the option of checking the dripper end line.

3. Visual Inspection: Take a good look at your drip line. Any leaks, clogs, or damage? Check those emitter outlets – are they playing fair and distributing water evenly? If you spot any issues, it's like giving your system a little TLC. Fix up anything that's not quite right to keep the water flowing where it needs to go.

How summer 2023–24 affected groundwater in Perth Why was this Western Australian summer different?

Western Australia just had its warmest summer on record, and much of the state also had a drier than average summer. In the South West Land Division of WA, rainfall was below to very much below average and maximum temperatures were above average to the highest on record.

•

Average water levels in the Superficial aquifer of the Gnangara groundwater system, below Perth’s north, have notably dropped since September 2023 to the lowest level in 8 years (see figure 1).

•

While Swan Coastal Plain wetlands have cycles of drying and wetting (that certain wildlife rely on), some Perth wetlands which haven’t dried in many years are now drying out.

For example, Lake Gwelup dried for the first time since 2013.

Climate factors involved in creating WA’s extreme summer conditions include El Niño in the Pacific and, importantly, a strong positive Indian Ocean Dipole. These two climate events interact, intensifying the drying effect in WA. Climate change likely influenced Western Australia’s record-breaking summer, which has resulted in less rainwater than usual moving into aquifers.

Observed effects of the dry, hot summer in Perth on the back of a dry 2023 include:

The Government of Western Australia is tackling the impacts of climate change on Perth’s groundwater resources State Government initiatives to manage Perth’s groundwater resources in a changing climate include the Waterwise Perth action plan and Kep Katitjin – Gabi Kaadadjan – Waterwise Perth action plan 2 which aim to establish world-leading waterwise communities for Boorloo (Perth) and Bindjareb (Peel) by 2030.

Under these successive Waterwise plans, the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation have released the following water

allocation planning documents to manage groundwater in response to reducing rainfall due to climate change: •

The 2022 Gnangara groundwater allocation plan requires water users across the system to reduce their abstraction to ensure the longterm sustainability of our precious groundwater resources as climate changes.

As part of implementing the Gnangara groundwater allocation plan, the State Government has invested in programs to support water users to adjust to using less water and to help Perth become even more waterwise. This has included funding support programs for local governments, the horticulture industry and garden bore users.
