Let’s Plan!

WHAT A

YEAR

THIS HAS BEEN FOR US, but mainly, what a year for our Wisconsin wedding couples! We were thrown some real curve balls in 2020. Some we were able to hit, but others were strikeouts. When it comes to weddings, there are so many emotions involved—for the engaged couples, the families, and even for our wedding industry. Throwing a pandemic in the mix is not ideal. We must all work together to make those wedding dreams come true for engaged couples. This past year just took a lot more effort, emotions and energy to make that happen.

With all the uncertainties, many couples moved their dream wedding to 2021, or decided to elope and opted for a small, intimate gathering. What I love about this past year was that it made couples realize what was most important to them and how they really wanted to celebrate their love story. Some of the small things turned into big things, and the big things turned into small things. Again, 2020 allowed us to look at everything from a different perspective and move forward with new visions for a perfect wedding day.

NOW, LET’S PLAN! Wisconsin Bride members and the wedding industry are here to help you navigate and celebrate your love story more than ever before. No matter what your comfort level is after this past year, they are here to make all your wedding dreams come to reality, and make it the best day it can be for you and your wedding guests.

For the recently engaged couple, check out our VENDOR DIRECTORY on WIBride.com, and turn to our ESSENTIALS GUIDE in the magazine on page 36. Here you will find a variety of our amazing Wisconsin Bride members who are ready to assist you and make your wedding dreams come true. And don’t forget to sign up for our monthly eNewsletter. This is where we share our recently published real weddings, new educational and inspirational articles and more. Wisconsin Bride wants to be the tool to help you connect the dots to find the perfect wedding vendors and generate inspirational ideas for your wedding day. History With a Twist

Wisconsin has three noteworthy new spaces for modern weddings of any size, and each radiates history and luxurious touches.

ST. JAMES 1868

MILWAUKEE | STJAMES1868.COM

Milwaukee’s elegant St. James 1868, a former Episcopal church and parish hall, boasts 50-foot ceilings, Tiffany stained-glass windows and 15th-century hand-carved architectural details; the ambience of European flair and rich local history makes any wedding day a classic, sophisticated affair. The Abbey can accommodate up to 300 wedding-only guests, 250 for dining, and includes an Englishstyle courtyard. The Hyde, the church’s old parish hall, can accommodate 150 guests and includes an outdoor terrace. Owned and operated by a team of female entrepreneurs, St. James 1868 partners with food and beverage vendors Gracious Events + Catering.

THE TREASURY DELAVAN | THETREASURYDELAVAN.COM

The transformation of the 1909 Wisconsin State Bank building in Delavan is the dream come true for makeup and wardrobe stylist Jillian Niemann, a Wisconsin native, and her contractor husband, Ryan. They created The Treasury, a light-filled modern space that can accommodate 185 guests, with soaring 17-foot ceilings and large arched windows. Exposed brick adds warmth to the surroundings, and former bank vaults can be used as extra event and rental space. The year-round venue was designed as a blank canvas for every style, from artsy and bold to bohemian and rustic. Couples are welcome to bring in their own vendors, but should consider the wealth of available services The Treasury offers that are included in the rental fee. *

TINSMITH MADISON | THETINSMITH.COM

Once home to a wholesale heating equipment business, The Tinsmith is a repurposed industrial structure with a signature barrel-vault roof, built in the early 1920s by brothers George and Arthur Trachte and within walking distance of fine hotels, restaurants and nightlife in the heart of Madison. Wisconsin natives Jessica Wartenweiler and Eric Welch purchased the building in 2018 and transformed it; amenities include a plant-filled, four-season solarium, more than 9,000 square feet in an open floor plan, and dramatic 23-foot-high ceilings. With full bar, open vendor policy, and pets are welcome.

OPPOSITE

Frame your love in a deconstructed arch of smilax vines, jasmine and Wisconsin-grown geranium by daffodil*parker; bouquets spilling over with tulips, poppies, Golden Mustard garden roses, locally grown ranunculus and dainty, dance-y butterfly ranunculus complete the scene. Our bride glows in the fittingly titled “Sunday Bouquet” gown by Watters, while the groom shines in a brilliant blue suit from Banana Republic.

A dreamy invitation suite from Windswept Design Studio captures the mood of oldfashioned amour to come in nostalgic pink and gold floral artwork. Details like a gold wax seal and deckle-edged stationery add elegance and a touch of whimsy.

Clockwise from top left: Frosting-sculpted flowers meet cheery natural blossoms on this classic two-tier cake, iced in a tender blue. Coral, peach and golden poppies, ranunculus and lisianthus centerpieces by 1209 Creative add opulent charm to the tabletops. The menu card, mirroring the lush style of the invitations, reveals the palate pleasers that await. All the colors of the day bloom in the sumptuous bridal bouquet by daffodil*parker. Here’s a tip from daffodil*parker’s Casey Bilyeu: Trust your florist to find the freshest local blooms with just a touch of color. It’s not just fun for the designer — you’ll find you get a splendid, unique-to-you look.

Flowers aren’t just for bouquets anymore —try a striking hanging installation for more blooms to your décor. This one, by Milwaukee Flower Co., features roses, dahlias and ranunculus in pink, sand, champagne and coral shades, along with ferns and assorted greenery, all displayed against an original abstract artwork.

Grace your space with flowers and you’ll have an enchanted garden, no matter the season. For the autumn or winter bride, this little burst of spring by Milwaukee Flower Co. adds a carefree, festive air.

Clockwise from top left: From the top of her head to the tips of her toes, our bride brightens her look with color in unexpected places, such as with these Camellia knotted sandals by Loeffler Randall. A fresh floral headpiece crafted by Sunborn Gardens, featuring feverfew and ranunculus, adds novelty for the daring bride who’s looking beyond the veil. Guests will enjoy the petite flowers on this adorable cakesicle. It’s made to match the main event, highlighted amid floral splendor created by Sunborn Gardens in an arrangement including hellebore, snapdragons, garden roses and scented geranium.

Jake McElmury and Rachel Bursey weren’t even 16 when they went on their first date. They were introduced by a mutual friend in Minnesota, and Rachel picked up Jake, equipped with a bouquet of red roses, at his parents’ house. Fast-forward to 2019: Jake proposed during a weekend trip to Chicago on the North Avenue Beach with a perfect view of the city skyline. The Villa Terrace Museum provided an elegant Italianate

venue for their big day and helped inspire their theme and palette of soft peach, apricot and creamy tones. Officiated by the bride’s cousin, their moving ceremony featured memories from both parents and a prayer from the bride’s grandfather. The maid of honor, who was expecting a baby, opted to stay home, but was still part of her best friend’s special day with a recorded speech played during dinner.

Brooke Aho, an intensive-care nurse, met Tony Bello, a cardiovascular perfusionist, as they cared for a patient, and he caught her eye immediately. Two weeks later, they ran into each other at Cowboy Jacks after a Twins game, and Brooke knew she had to seize the moment, walking up to him to start a conversation. The conversation continued and eventually led to a trip to Bangkok, where the couple went out on the town for a romantic dinner, followed by drinks at the top

of the tallest building in the city—75 floors straight up. When they asked the waitress for a quick photo, Tony took Brooke by surprise and fell to one knee. Their October wedding took place during a blizzard, but Brooke and Tony embraced the falling snow that created a serene backdrop for their ceremony, first dance and kiss. Shades of pink and green in the florals graced the tables. Though it was chilly outside, the warmth of Brooke and Tony’s love filled the day.

While attending Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota, Emee Udo and Walker Danielson felt that first spark at a Canadian tuxedo-themed party. Many dates and a few years later, Walker dropped to one knee along a tree line planted by his late grandfather on his grandmother's property, to ask her to spend their lives together. Emee had expected the event to be a photo session with Walker’s family, so

she was truly surprised when he presented her with a ring. Their wedding day was filled with an abundance of flowers, including quicksand roses, eucalyptus and white spray roses against a classic palette of cream, navy and terra cotta. With drinks and appetizers in hand, Emee and Walker celebrated their union in the warmth of the Enchanted Barn with friends and family and later danced the night away.

A love of adventure led Hannah Lederman and Colin Minden to Peru, where Hannah unfortunately ended up with a 104-degree fever. She pushed through and continued to explore with their tour group, and even made it to the peak of a nearly 16,000-foot climb. Making the trek even more memorable? During the hike, they stopped at a stunning lunch spot and while exploring the surrounding area, Colin got down on one knee and asked Hannah to

marry him. Their wedding day at The Farm at Dover was heavenly, with a modern boho theme and a ceremony in the woods. The endless gardens provided the perfect backdrop for a couple who value nature and adventure. The bride’s aunt officiated their wedding, which included such Jewish traditions as signing the ketubah and breaking the glass. Standing under the chuppah, the couple enjoyed a moment of calm and joy, happy to be married.

PHOTOGRAPHY

“Not all love stories start with beer and a fish fry, but maybe they should.” So began Tyler Twing’s vows to Amelia Abraham at their August wedding. The two met when Amelia’s parents hosted a fish fry for her roommates during their senior year of college at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Amelia offered a plate of fish to make friends with the neighbor boys playing beer darts, one of whom was Tyler. He proposed at The Paine Art Center and Gardens on their fifth dating anniversary, even hiring a

photographer for the event. The Carriage House at Lac La Belle provided the perfect combination of Amelia’s equestrian passion and a picturesque venue near the lake. The couple incorporated red, Tyler’s favorite color, paired with crisp whites and bright pinks. This palette made a striking contrast to the bridesmaids’ white dresses, a bold choice that worked beautifully to create the clean, spare look the bride envisioned. Acting as flower girl and flower boy were the couple’s dogs, Millie and Milo.

TEXT: Amanda Christensen WEDDING: September 12, 2020

CEREMONY AND RECEPTION: Bride’s father’s property, Luck

HONEYMOON: Cherokee, North Carolina, and & Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

PHOTOGRAPHY Eyetography Film & Foto

High school junior Hayley Zappa met high school senior Scott Jewett at a graduation party. After their first connection over party snacks and conversation, their relationship grew. They soon discovered their dads had worked together and they had met as little kids many years before. Fast-forward to 2019 deer hunting opening day: Sitting in a stand together, Hayley dozed off, then woke to Scott, a small box and a ring, as he asked her to be his hunting partner for life. With a small, stylish wedding that featured a unity ceremony,

Hayley and Scott spent the day basking in the warmth of friends and family as they celebrated the beginning of their life together. The setting, on rustic land belonging to Hayley’s father, was serene and mystical. The greens and cream shades of the bride’s gown and bridesmaids’ dresses coordinated with the color palette—and the towering trees. Pops of pink accented the lush florals. The bride’s father fashioned ceremony benches from timber on the property for another personal touch.

During a Saturday night on the town in Whitewater, Lauren LaDell found herself at a small bar with a friend—the same bar that Zakary Kurtz found himself at after returning from Army basic training. When her friend persuaded Lauren to go say hi to Zakary, he turned around and immediately recognized her: They had met three years earlier at Panama City Beach during spring break. Zakary made sure to get her number this time—and the rest is history. After returning from a 13-month deployment to Afghanistan, Zakary

joined Lauren on a work trip in Nashville, Tennessee. They strolled the streets and when they paused on a bridge overlooking the city, Lauren turned to find Zakary on one knee. On their special day, Lauren was escorted down the aisle by both of her parents at the Catholic wedding Mass. The event featured shades of cream, gold and black, lit by glowing candles. Dried branches and florals adorned the walls and tables at Onesto, the backdrop for Lauren and Zakary’s romantic day to remember forever.

HONEYMOON: Postponed due to COVID

Many a love story has started on a high school dance floor—which happened for Ethan Bown and Bethany Schmitt in 2012. They attended different high schools, but when Ethan saw her, he wasn’t going to miss his chance to get to know her. Six years later, Ethan dropped to one knee by the family Christmas tree in Bethany’s parents’ house for a dazzling, holiday-inspired moment; Bethany’s dad had

asked her mom to marry him in the very same spot, making the moment even more special. At an outdoor wedding at Bethany’s family’s farm, the couple had a day full of love, family, and friends. Sunflowers and eucalyptus adorned the barn, along with rustic décor that enhanced the walnut siding and weathered steel roofing. Since they both grew up on a farm, the setting was especially meaningful.

TEXT: Audrey Pickering WEDDING: July 18, 2020

CEREMONY: Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, Sheboygan RECEPTION: Whistling Straits, Sheboygan

HONEYMOON: To be determined

PHOTOGRAPHY

Katrina Schuchardt was out with friends at the Blue Velvet Lounge in downtown Madison, and just as they were leaving, Komlan Assignon asked her for a dance. She tried to make excuses, but he insisted—and now he’s her forever dance partner. During dinner in the Eiffel Tower while visiting Paris, he surprised her with dried rose petals spelling the words “Will you marry me?” They left the tower just as it lit up with a sparkling light show. They held the wedding at the same church where the bride’s parents

were married, and the couple’s siblings joined the wedding party, making it a family affair, with some of Komlan’s family in traditional African formalwear to represent their home country of Togo. Whistling Straits provided a breathtaking outdoor location featuring an Irish barn and a palette of ivory, vintage rose, blush, champagne, burgundy and violet, along with the surrounding greenery. That first dance on a night out rewarded the couple with one very special first dance at their wedding.

Molly & Katie

TEXT: Audrey Pickering WEDDING: September 6, 2020

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: Cedarburg HONEYMOON: Disney World (planned)

PHOTOGRAPHY

Kaitlyn

When Molly Johnson and Katie Allbee stayed on campus one summer during college at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, their fast friendship eventually led to not one, but two, proposals. Molly proposed to Katie in the Morocco Pavilion at Epcot in Disney World after their first half-marathon race in 2019, and Katie proposed to Molly on one of her favorite hikes in Boulder, Colorado. After canceling their original plan for a March wedding in Florida, the couple opted for an intimate affair at Katie’s family home, incorporating the radiant fall colors into their palette for a laid-back September celebration. The wedding day was relaxed,

and the couple took time to enjoy a bottle of champagne before the festivities. They incorporated several Jewish traditions into their ceremony, including signing the Ketubah, the Jewish marriage contract. Molly's father designed and constructed an arch as a centerpiece accented with florals. The couple also wrote their own vows with meaningful memories, bringing them together for a life of many more ahead. Despite the small celebration with only their officiant (a friend), Katie’s brother, parents, and their puppy, Barley Pop, they streamed the event so friends and family could virtually celebrate and even participate in a toast to the happy couple.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Mutual friends brought Nora Olson and Matt Murphy together as undergrads at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; many Badger football games and final exams later, Nora and Matt’s relationship continued—long-distance, with Nora in Milwaukee and Matt in Madison. During a classic Madison weekend of Badger football and good food at Union Terrace, Matt capped things off with a proposal at the elegant Edgewater Hotel. Due to COVID-19, the couple decided on an intimate ceremony with close friends

and family at Nora’s parents’ home. Neutral and natural shades of green and pink shined in the forest setting for a magical vibe, as the couple celebrated among wildflowers and pines. Small bouquets accented trailing linens of the dining table as Nora and Matt cut their wedding cake. After the ceremony, everyone took a trolley to favorite Door County spots, from Ephraim Dock to Peninsula State Park, ending the night with a delicious meal outside amid Wisconsin’s north woods.

A VINTAGE LOVE

Lauren & Robert

TEXT: Audrey Pickering WEDDING: October 16, 2020 CEREMONY & RECEPTION: Brookfield

HONEYMOON: The Pfister Hotel, Milwaukee (a honeymoon to Athens was postponed due to COVID)

Lauren Lukacek and Robert Parks’ love story flourished thanks to happy happenstance. With their best friends married to each other, they met at a party while Lauren was visiting her best friend in San Diego. A year later, while Lauren was on tour performing in Love Never Dies , a sequel to Phantom of the Opera , she visited the area of California where Robert was living and invited him to the show. They began dating, and Robert flew to 10 different cities just to see Lauren perform. Robert got tickets to Wicked on Broadway, where Lauren’s college friend is the conductor, and while on a backstage tour after the show, Robert popped

the question on stage in the Gershwin Theatre—the perfect proposal for his theater gal. The wedding was a lovely private affair at the bride’s childhood home and featured numerous heirlooms, including Lauren’s gown. The dress was made by her grandmother for her mother to wear in the 1968 Miss Louisiana pageant (which she won). As part of their 1950s vintage wedding theme, the couple aimed for a sustainable, low-waste wedding with locally grown, brightly colored flowers and mismatched dishes. The white mums her father planted to line the aisle magically turned pink—Lauren’s favorite color. *

EDITOR’S PICKS

SOME OF OUR FAVORITE MOMENTS FROM THE YEAR IN WEDDINGS

BEST FLORAL DESIGN BIRD & BUMBLE

Rebecca Hawkins, owner of Bird & Bumble in Elm Grove, is pushing botanical boundaries with innovative wearable designs, such as this “floral tattoo.” This compelling creation was made for a client to wear to an intimate soirée at St. James 1868 in Milwaukee that not only commemorated her wedding anniversary with her husband, but also to celebrate her new status as a U.S. citizen. Paired with a simple off-the-shoulder silk dress, this cascading arrangement of ranunculus, hellebore, and roses is accented with hyacinth hips, clematis buds and bleached pepperberry trailing across her collarbone. It appears to stay put magically; in fact, an “invisible” combination of first aid tape and strategically placed eyelash glue keeps it in place.

BEST CAKE THE BAKED LAB

Shawn Bolduc, owner and cake artist behind The Baked Lab in Madison, creates custom confectionary masterpieces, such as this pure-white head-turner. With architectural inspiration and a design centered on texture and structure, hand-sculpted edible wafer paper accents three tiers of vanilla bean Swiss-meringue buttercream. Inside, it’s even better: Layers of vanilla bean butter cake, a unique balsamic raspberry jam and champagne buttercream are the mouthwatering delights that await.

BEST EVENT DESIGN CHERRY BLOSSOM EVENTS

This cozy space by Andrea VandeBerg and Sarah Sarbacker, the duo behind Madisonbased Cherry Blossom Events, is the quintessential intimate event, with moody blooms adorning a fireside table space and custommonogrammed wall art. At the whiskey tasting station, an inspiring addition to this celebration, you and your guests can sip as you take in the serene waterfront views at the Edgewater.

DAVE STREMIKIS PHOTOGRAPHY

Does it get more spontaneous than a barefoot dance at sunset?

Madison-based photographer Dave Stremikis managed to capture this magic moment between Abby Staley and Eric Castillo at their reception at a family friend’s property. From the perfect twirl of her skirt to the look in Eric’s eyes, this image captures their newlywed bliss in a natural moment that’s Stemikis’ hallmark.

BEST DRESSED KATY SCHUELE SCANLAN IN MONIQUE LHUILLIER

Statement sleeves are of-themoment this season, but bride Katy Schuele Scanlan took it up a notch with an all-around captivating gown for her wedding at the Kohler Riverbend Estate in Kohler. This aptly named “Lovely” ball gown by Monique Lhuillier could have been made with this bride in mind; “I knew I wanted a Monique Lhuillier dress,” says Scanlan. “I just love her aesthetic, and her dresses are so timeless and classy.” With its sculpted shape in luxurious mosaic lace and a spellbinding off-the-shoulder neckline, it’s the dress of her dreams, Scanlan says.

BEST INVITATION SUITE BAY VIEW PRINTING CO.

Upscale, earthy inspiration plays well with rustic textures in this ideal invitation suite for the modern outdoorsy couple. Unconventional materials are trending in paper goods; Bay View Printing Co. in Milwaukee incorporates hints of leather with velvet ribbon, letterpress on hand-deckled paper and a dried flower seal. A feminine botanical print peeks out from the envelope liner to balance the strong colors and typography, while a sly little fox illustration adds a touch of woodland whimsy.

BEST CATERING IDEA FROMAGINATION

Not to be confused with a traditional cheese cake, Fromagination’s “cakes of cheese” are an out-of-the-ordinary appetizer that will satisfy the cheeseloving palate and heritage of many a Wisconsinite. At their shop in Madison, the cheesemongers at Fromagination work with you to determine which artisanal cheeses best suit you, your guests and your event, then create an eyecatching treat that’s not only tasty, but also attractive in—dare we say— the cheesiest way. *
