GUESTS GATHERED AT THE EMPIRE ROOM in Turner Park for this year’s must-attend event, Nebraska Wedding Day’s Best of 2021 Awards.

As guests and wedding professionals mingled, a pleasant evening emerged in the midst of a busy season. They were welcomed and celebrated as they enjoyed specialty drinks, hors d’oeuvres and desserts along with live entertainment. This celebration of the hard work that Nebraska’s wedding professionals put in every year was sponsored by some of their own, including AAA Rents & Event Services, A&D Technical Supply, Alpha-Lit Marquee Letters, Attitude on Food, Chaos Productions, Dana Osborne Design, Hotel Deco, Image Entertainment, Laura Elizabeth Photography, Letter Lane Design Studio, Rachel J. When Kaitlynn Grube and Spencer Ulven met through mutual friends on New Year’s Eve 2017, they never imagined they would be each other’s midnight kiss for the rest of their lives. Fate was at work that summer, when their friend group made plans for tacos and margaritas, but only Kaitlynn and Spencer showed up. Two years later, the couple was gazing at Christmas lights when Spencer asked her to marry him. Their wedding showcased a classic palette of blush, white and pops of greenery, with décor mostly made by the groom and the bride’s father. Guests were welcomed by a cornhole “guestbook” the bride’s father

made, and a ladder by the groom’s father holding photos of the couple. Kaitlynn’s “something borrowed” was an emerald ring borrowed from her mother (and originally owned by her grandmother). One of the couple’s best friends officiated, and Kaitlynn and Spencer read handwritten vows. The day was a perfect representation of the couple with multiple desserts, craft beers and ’90s throwbacks. In May, the couple plans to relive the joy of the day by reading letters they wrote to each other at the ceremony. And a sign hangs in their home reading “All because they ate tacos and drank margaritas.”

Brea Muhle and Josh Goodenkauf’s serendipitous meeting happened while waiting in line to see a Chase Rice concert in Lincoln, and even though they came for the music, the highlight of their night was definitely each other. After three years together, Josh proposed on Father’s Day, when the couple’s family and friends were gathered at Brea’s family lake house. The Fountains Ballroom owner—who is also Brea’s sister—brought Brea’s boho wedding dreams to life. Pampas grass made a statement against the neutral palette, with

centerpieces and bouquets of roses, hydrangeas and eucalyptus. Brea and Josh’s favorite moment was seeing each other for the first time. “That very first moment we made eye contact was magical. Everything about that moment was perfect,” she says. Behind the head table was a neon sign reading “Love you more” to remember Brea’s mother, who said it all the time. “This sign was super-special to us, as we both had lost our moms, and it was a reminder that they were both there with us throughout it all,” Brea says.

Tessa Hlavaty and Jared Thomsen have Husker football, and her younger brother, to thank for their tailgate meeting in 2014. Jared was her younger brother’s fraternity pledge educator, and introduced the two at a game. Four and a half years later, Jared surprised Tessa with photos of their favorite memories as he asked her to marry him. After Tessa said yes, she was greeted by family and friends for a surprise celebration. They exchanged “I do’s” surrounded by spring flowers at the historic Joslyn Art Museum; their first look was a special moment before Jared’s father officiated the ceremony. At

the reception, antique containers held roses and greenery, channeling the eclectic flair the couple wanted to showcase. As major foodies, bride and groom served Coneflower Creamery’s prosecco and margarita sorbet drinks at cocktail hour, Greek and Indian food at the reception, and three flavors of cake. And crowning the cake? The very same cake topper that Tessa’s parents had on their cake. The flawless day ended with full hearts (and bellies). “We felt love and intimacy from those celebrating with us in person, and those celebrating with us in spirit,” Tessa says.

A mutual friend of Andrew Mancuso and Victoria Sorrentino knew they were destined to be together when he told them the first time they met, “All Italians must sit on the same couch!” And he was right; their connection was instant. Two blissful years later, the couple visited Victoria’s father’s family in England. On Andrew’s first overseas trip he carried the ring in his backpack and wrote a note for TSA asking that no one say anything. Over a family dinner, Andrew started to give a toast, which confused Victoria—but it all

made sense when he got down on one knee. Their June wedding was full of loved ones and memories of those who had passed. To honor the bride’s late father, a flower was placed on the seat next to her mom. Victoria also attached a charm on her bouquet to represent her dad walking his daughter down the aisle. Timeless florals of roses, hydrangeas and orchids and a black-and-white palette made it an elegant affair. A neon sign proclaiming “The Mancusos” lit up the room as everyone danced the night away.

Kassi Nelson and Matt Foote knew about each other long before they met in person. Kassi heard about Matt through one of her colleagues in the TV newsroom who wanted to set up her husband’s pal—Matt—with a “good girl” (that would be Kassi). They tried to set up a double date, but their schedules didn’t cooperate. Meanwhile, Matt saw Kassi reporting on TV, and after eight months of watching her on the news, he worked up the courage to DM her. Breaking news: It worked! On Matt’s birthday a year and a half later, the two were exploring a new-to-them dive bar near Kassi’s family’s

lake house when she said, “This would be a perfect place for an engagement party!” Within the hour, Matt had dropped to one knee. Her assent prompted rounds of free drinks (and unsolicited marriage advice). Their summer Southwestern-style wedding welcomed guests with a Champagne wall as they entered the outdoor ceremony site. The couple paid homage to their home in New Mexico with florals in terra cotta pots and a bohemian rug as the aisle. The celebration flowed indoors, with a floral installation above the main table and warm lighting illuminating the venue.

After meeting through mutual friends in 2012, University of Nebraska Omaha students Lauren Barratt and Marco Ortiz became best friends and spent almost every day together. Two years of friendship later, Lauren moved to Houston—only to realize she was in love with Marco. They finally made it official and spent the first year of their relationship long distance before Lauren moved back to Omaha. Four years later, Marco planned a picnic at the Arboretum—a typical date for the couple—except this time he proposed to the love of his life. Their garden wedding

welcomed spring with florals arranged by the bride, featuring gardenias, garden roses, sweet pea and fresh topiaries. To honor Marco’s Mexican heritage, the ceremony was held in Spanish as well as English. The couple also did the traditional watering of a new tree to symbolize the growth of their marriage in the coming years. Marco’s favorite part of the day was when he first saw Lauren. “At that moment I understood that I made the right decision,” he says. From friends and family surrounding them with love to their close friend officiating, their big day was unforgettable.

Nick Kayton was a college pal of Claire Bergen’s older brother when they first met a decade ago. When the two were reconnected through mutual friends on Husker Game Day, it was quite a surprise for Nick to realize he was meeting up with “Bergen’s little sister.” They spent much of the pandemic getting to know each other—Nick even persuaded city girl Claire to do cattle chores with him on the farm. After a year of dating, the couple was finishing farm duties at sunset when Nick asked Claire to marry him. “I would have never dreamed

that cattle would witness our proposal!” she says. On their wedding day, Claire held a bouquet of white florals with a touch of blush, greenery and two earrings that belonged to her grandmother. Before the “I do’s” Claire and Nick shared an emotional first look and some quality time together before loved ones arrived. Hanging florals and candles suspended above the head table at the reception helped create the fairy-tale atmosphere Claire had always imagined.
