A New— More Creative Normal

WE DDINGS ARE ABOUT UNITY: You and your soulmate becoming one. Your family and friends coming together to celebrate your union. Your wedding professionals working together to make your big day happen. And despite the social distancing we’ve adapted to, something magical is happening.

The soon-to-be-wed and the thousands of creative professionals who work with them are reimagining traditions, reevaluating what matters most and discovering new ways to gather in the name of love. As we put together this issue, we worked with many unknowns and a new way of doing things—but the excitement, dedication and determination of couples continues to inspire us every day. Our hearts are with you, and we are here to tell you that weddings are still happening and will continue to happen, in inventive and awe-inspiringly innovative ways.

As safety precautions continue to evolve, we encourage you to follow the most current regulations in your area. Having a planner on your team can be a great asset during these times. They keep track of changes in regulations and provide guidance on how to make your event as safe as possible, for you and all involved. The wedding world is reinventing itself to become more flexible and more dynamic—better for everyone.

Human nature is resilient. Together, we are facing our new challenges with imagination and determination, and uniting to celebrate what matters most—love.

Keep Dreaming

GREETINGS! MY NAME IS NICHOLE PLUGGE and I’m the associate publisher for Nebraska Wedding Day. Over the past couple of months, I haven’t been able to turn off my mind because of so many unknowns for Nebraska couples and wedding vendors. I have been thinking of different ways to partner with wedding businesses during this time, how to support couples changing their dreams and the new reality of future wedding days. As a publisher, a past bride, and a partner in the Nebraska wedding community, my heart goes out to all of you. I try to imagine and understand what is running through the hearts and minds of couples right now, and of our Nebraska wedding vendors as well. I also try to imagine the brides and grooms, and the challenges and emotions they are facing with rescheduling, postponing, and all the little details necessary to make wedding dreams a reality. Then, I think of all the operations that would need to be accomplished within a venue to make sure the couple’s day would be absolutely perfect, but still provide a safe, healthy and happy environment for their guests, their team of people working at the wedding, and for the couple themselves. Finally, I think about the wedding vendors. These incredible people are the main resource that will ensure that an amazing wedding day will happen, no matter if it’s postponed or not. They truly are the magicians who make all these crises disappear and surround you with positive energy for your wedding day. They got this! That’s why you hire them—they will take care of you.

We’ve assembled some helpful tips to get you through this pandemic planning. Visit our new and improved website, neweddingday.com, for recent articles and tips on how to plan your wedding during COVID-19. And of course, check out our real weddings to help you find hope and inspiration.

For the recently engaged couples, check out our vendor directory on neweddingday.com and turn to our Essentials Guide/Venue Tour on page 70 in the magazine to find a variety of our great Nebraska Wedding Day members who are ready to make your wedding dreams come true. And, don’t forget to sign up for our E-Newsletter. This is where we share our recently published real weddings, new educational and inspirational articles, and more. From finding the perfect vendors to inspiring trendy ideas, Nebraska Wedding Day is here to help you connect the dots to make your big day a dream come true.

One last thing: On your wedding day, remember to relax as you walk down the aisle, because the only thing that really matters is waiting for you at the end—with a smile.

The bride is captivating in a breezy Martina Liana gown embellished with sheer lace and floral appliqué from Ellynne Bridal. Topping off her look, art deco-style earrings from Ellynne Bridal shimmer in the sunlight. The groom, in a dapper blue-gray suit and brown leather shoes from Tip Top Tux, is appropriately smitten. The emerald-green paisley tie and pocket square, also from Tip Top Tux, hint at the greenery-filled fête to come.

THIS PAGE

Soft shades of pristine white and dreamy rose create a mesmerizing dessert display. The cake table from Rachel J. Event Rentals emblazoned with “how sweet it is to be loved by you” sums up the day. The cake perches atop a transparent acrylic stand, allowing the sweet treat to take the spotlight.

1 – In a timeless combination of white and green with hints of dusty rose, the bridal bouquet by Petals to Platinum is an ethereal mix of garden roses, butterfly ranunculus, lisianthus, astilbe and delphinium, tied together with a refined pink ribbon.

2 – The bride dares to be different with this unique Malis-Henderson tulle veil and floral crown from Dream Dress Express. Her makeup by Model Perfect Airbrush flawlessly enhances her natural newlywed glow.

3 – The palest roses and ranunculus from Petals to Platinum grace the statuesque cake with textural, raw edges, created by The Confectionist.

4 – Spring canapés—herb cream cheese spread on marble bread, garnished with cucumber, carrot, cherry tomato and sage—are little works of palate-pleasing art, crafted by Patricia Catering and Cocktails.

5 – The minimalist menu by Dana Osborne Design is accentuated with deckle-edge paper and a blush botanical wax seal. Gold chargers and white dinner plates are topped with salad plates that feature delicate gold floral illustrations, all from Rachel J. Event Rentals.

A peaceful spot to steal away for a few moments of newlywed bliss, a lounge area features an arrangement by Petals to Platinum. This vision of delphinium, roses, eucalyptus and spritely strawflower rests atop a goldand-glass table from Rachel J. Event Rentals.

A backdrop of flowing greenery and white drapery pairs with a rosy floral table linen from BBJ Linen, inviting a hint of the outdoors to the dinner table. Plush velvet chairs elevate the ambiance with rich texture and tone, provided by Rachel J. Event Rentals.

1 – Guests can feast amid a garden of delights in this divine setting. Lavish centerpieces by Petals to Platinum are bathed in flickering candlelight from floating tea lights arrayed in candle holders. Acrylic floral place cards by Laser Focus Design designate the place settings in the most charming way. White Chiavari chairs provided by the Soirée Room subtly complete the look.

2 – The stationery suite from Dana Osborne Design conveys a message of pure elegance. Muted mauve brushstrokes beneath the clear acrylic invitation pair innovative style with timeless romance. Botanical line drawings find their complement in the backdrop of white linens with floral appliqué and fresh blooms from Petals to Platinum.

3 – Acrylic stands from Rachel J. Event Rentals create a modern ceremony installation filled with airy florals, including baby’s breath, hydrangea, statice, Misty White limonium and bleached ruscus from Petals to Platinum.

4 – Cheers to edible flowers, this season’s sweetest trend. Tantalizingly presented, they’re infused in ice cubes swimming in a summery, sparkling pink lemonade from Patricia Catering and Cocktails.

5 – Amid an array of blossoms, the newlyweds step into their new life together on a cool boho rug from Rachel J. Event Rentals.

Keep it cool in this glamorous beaded fit-and-flare Ellie Wilde by Mon Cheri gown from Dream Dress Express. A fierce bridal bouquet by Russ’s Market is bursting with a spirited color combo of garnet, mauve and chocolate. The groom is classically debonair in a Justin Alexander black tux with satin lapel, black dotted bow tie and black leather shoes, all from Tip Top Tux. And, of course, the best bling: a hexagon halo diamond ring for her and a white- and yellowgold band for him, both from Borsheims.

The design-forward invitation suite by Revolution Paper Co. embodies your fearless style, as asymmetrical shapes in shades of gray and dusty rose set the tone for your big day.

Your wedding day should be carefree and easy, so, like our bride, settle back on this French provincial settee from Hillcrest Wedding Décor Rentals and let the magic begin. And how can a bride feel anything but special in this frothy Essense of Australia gown from Ellynne Bridal? Layers of organza and tulle with delicate lace and sequins make this a fairy-tale classic. Topped off with a charming hat, the look is relaxed and sophisticated.

A tablescape that’s showy without showing off adds to the casual mood. Blush-tone salad plates and white and tan dinner plates are shown to advantage on chargers in antique bronze and gold-web placemats from Hillcrest Wedding Décor Rentals.

WHEN YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW

Holly & Nick

TEXT: Sydney Stevens WEDDING: June 20, 2020

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: Wilderness Ridge

HONEYMOON: Estes Park, Colorado

“Oh, I’m going to marry that girl,” Nick Sullivan told his friends after meeting Holly Clauson at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. The 18-year-olds were undeniably attracted to each other when they met in their dorm hall, living only two floors apart. Five years later, down on one knee, Nick asked Holly to marry him at The Dairy Store, where they had their first date. “It was the easiest yes I’ve ever said,” she recalls. Rain was in the forecast on the wedding day but it miraculously cleared up; with a beautiful

75-degree day, they had the outdoor ceremony they had always dreamed of, with a special “first look” as their favorite moment. The wedding featured light and airy nature-inspired details, a token of their love for the outdoors. Half the tables were decorated to match the bride’s bouquet of hydrangeas, while eucalyptus and votive candles adorned the others. Under the greenery and globe lights hung from the antler chandelier, everyone played bride-andgroom trivia, then shared fun stories about the newlyweds.

CEREMONY: Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Omaha

RECEPTION: Le Boullion Restaurant, Omaha

HONEYMOON: National Park road trip in Utah (Park City, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Arches & Capitol Reef )

After meeting through a mutual friend and future best man on a float trip down the Elkhorn River, there was no denying Lauren Hinkle and John Musil were meant to be together. The soon-to-be couple messaged for a couple weeks before going on a dinner date. Two blissful years later, they took a trip to Maine. As the lovebirds watched the sunrise on Cadillac Mountain amid autumn splendor, John dropped to one knee and popped the question. “Our engagement was so much better than anything I could have imagined,” she says. Their original large ceremony

had to shrink because of COVID-19, but Lauren and John said it turned out exactly how it was meant to. A last-minute venue cancellation led them to cold-calling restaurants, and Le Boullion delivered. “I feel like I owe them a kidney or my first-born,” Lauren jokes. “They were absolute lifesavers.” Inspired by the French countryside, the couple incorporated whimsical, ethereal looks into the dusky blue and rose palette, graced by greenery. A favorite moment happened before the reception when they went to a local bar for some alone time.

SOMETHING BORROWED

Abbie & Alex

TEXT: Sydney Stevens WEDDING: July 25, 2020

CEREMONY: St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, Omaha

RECEPTION: Omaha Country Club

HONEYMOON: Vail, Colorado

PHOTOGRAPHY

Abbie Schmid and Alex Cuenca’s kismet meeting was at a Durand Jones & the Indications concert in Kansas City. Little did the two know a couple years later they would have their first dance to a song by the same band. After a year together, Alex proposed, with Abbie’s grandmother’s wedding ring, at the iconic Shuttlecock statue at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City. The couple was more than content with their intimate celebration with family and friends, in-person and virtually. The couple paid homage to both families: The priest from Abbie’s parents’ wedding

was in attendance; Mexican traditions were part of the ceremony, a nod to Alex’s family. Floral arrangements added a special touch with Cuenca roses (which happen to have the same name as the couple).

Abbie’s bouquet was personalized with heirlooms passed down from her grandmother, godmother and mother, tied with a handkerchief from her great-great grandmother. To honor Alex’s past as a band member, a personalized guitar served as the guest book. Eating churros and dancing the night away was the perfect way to end their special day.

SPARKS FLY

Charity & Adam

TEXT: Sydney Stevens WEDDING: June 4, 2020

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: The Gallery at Turbine, Lincoln

HONEYMOON: Spain & Italy (planned)

PHOTOGRAPHY

A game-night with mutual friends is where Charity Green and Adam Wieberdink first met. After a summer running around in the same circle, Adam asked her to watch a meteor shower, and she felt sparks begin to fly—and not just from the sky. After eight wonderful months, the two found themselves at Glacier National Park by a lake with a beautiful mountain view, when Adam popped the question. Their original Colorado wedding plan was derailed due to the pandemic, resulting in a wedding party of two in late

May, “It was so special to share those moments with just us two and our two friends who stood as our witnesses,” Charity says. When June arrived, the two opted for an intimate celebration with loved ones. A rustic-romantic theme reigned, accented with pops of peacock blue and rose pink. Charity and Adam set up the venue themselves to create a beautifully personalized space. Despite the changed plans and a smaller guest list, the couple loved the simplicity of the day and really being able to take everything in.

THE SOUND OF ROMANCE

Eric & Guneet

TEXT: Sherri Hildebrandt WEDDING: August 9, 2020

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: Bella Terre Reception Hall and Vineyard, Glenwood, Iowa

HONEYMOON: Sonoma & Carmel, California

PHOTOGRAPHY

The Mullers

Eric Van De Graaff and Guneet Kaur met at the Omaha hospital where both are doctors, but it wasn’t until Guneet went with friends to a 2017 show celebrating Frank Sinatra’s birthday that she and Eric—the pianist in the jazz band performing that night—began to get acquainted. A year and a half later, the couple was visiting Austria, where Eric had lived, when, surrounded by “Sound of Music” alpine splendor, Eric popped the question in a mountainside hikers’ hut, just as it began to rain. Putting together a wedding during a pandemic while Guneet, a cardiovascular specialist, was doing specialty training

in Texas was, Eric says, “hectic but immensely rewarding.” They pulled it off in six weeks, aided only by younger siblings who shared tips from their own recent wedding experiences. Members of both Guneet’s and Eric’s far-flung families attended, making the day “unexpected and wonderful,” he says. For Eric, the high point was sharing the wedding vows they wrote themselves — “and I learned that Guneet is poetically brilliant.” Since Guneet and Eric already had homes and were wellestablished, they asked guests, in lieu of gifts, to contribute to charities they chose through thegoodbeginning.com.

THE LUCKIEST NUMBER

Johnna & Matthew

TEXT: Sherri Hildebrandt WEDDING: Sept. 13, 2019

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: Falconwood Park, Bellevue

HONEYMOON: Seattle and Bainbridge Island, Washington, via Amtrak

Contrary to popular lore, Friday the 13th has been the lucky day for Johnna and Matthew Hjersman Everson. The couple, who met on Tinder, had their first date on Friday, Feb. 13, 2015, and Matthew’s proposal was on Friday, Oct. 13, 2017. So it followed that their wedding took place on a warm evening, of Friday, Sept. 13, 2019. Johnna and Matthew love spending time in nature—camping, hiking and gardening are favorite pastimes—so an outdoor ceremony was important. With a venue boasting loads of lovely green grass and tons of trees, Johnna decided to

lean into it, with bridal party apparel in blues and greens, sunny yellow in the flower girls’ outfits, and greenery-heavy floral elements crafted by Matthew’s Aunt Gwen. Matthew’s family embraced their Polish heritage by leading the tradition of tossing the bride and groom into the air while singing “Sto lat,” a traditional Polish song of good wishes, good health and long life. The reception treats included Winchell’s doughnuts, a nod to Matthew and Johnna’s frequent visits to the shop near Matthew’s house. The evening ended with dancing under a harvest moon.

BEST DAY EVER

Tessa & Christopher

TEXT: Sherri Hildebrandt WEDDING: July 18, 2020

CEREMONY: St. John’s Lutheran Country Church, Adair, Iowa RECEPTION: Schafer Barn on the Hill, Adair, Iowa

HONEYMOON: Yellowstone National Park & Glacier National Park

Tessa Knutsen says she hates decorating the Christmas tree, but her sentiments might have mellowed when, after two years of dating, boyfriend Chris Bireline handed her a gift and told her it was a special tree ornament. That ornament was inscribed with “Will you marry me?” Recalls Tessa, “I obviously said yes, right after asking if he was sure!” Their ceremony, originally planned for May, was postponed to July because of COVID-19. “Our wedding day was the hottest day of the year in a church and barn with no air conditioning,” she says. Despite their change of plans, close family and

friends were in attendance to make it what Tessa calls “the best day ever.” The moment that stands out, she says, was when she and Chris had their first dance. “It gave us a few minutes to truly appreciate those who came to celebrate our love,” she says. Tessa chose white, silver and blush for her color palette and used fresh flowers and greenery for a clean, simple look. A food truck serving tacos and gyros made catering a simple matter—and was an overwhelming success. And since neither Tessa nor Chris is fond of cake, they put in an order for one of their favorite treats: Starbucks cake pops.

Brad Newton and Grace Pavlik had just enjoyed a lovely dinner out, reveling in the recent purchase of their new house. When they returned home, Grace opened the door to flowers and candles, the perfect setting for Brad’s proposal. As New Year’s Eve is a favorite day for Grace, full of memories of celebrations past and reflections on the year gone by, it seemed the perfect day to get married. “It was an incredibly heartfelt and personal day because of the things we chose to incorporate,” Grace says. The couple wrote their own vows, Brad’s father officiated and

their parents helped them plant a unity tree, while Grace’s uncle played piano and her aunt made the late-night snacks. A palette of blush and champagne tones with black and white details, a bounty of candles and globe lights, and vintage furniture to create cozy gathering spaces gave the evening a warm, classic vibe. Making the evening even more spectacular was a countdown to midnight, complete with hats and noisemakers and Omaha’s New Year’s fireworks display, followed by a sparkler send-off from family and friends. *
