When Robert Osberg was assigned a random roommate his freshman year of college, he had no idea it would take him down a path that ended with meeting Jennifer Yanagida, his future wife. His roommate happened to be a friend of Jennifer’s; after she walked into their room on her first day of classes, she spent the following weeks finding excuses to swing by. Robert spent a good amount of time pretending he didn’t notice—until her consistency paid off. After eight years of dating, Robert took the plunge and left a trail of rose petals in Lincoln’s Wilderness Park for Jennifer to follow. At the end of the trail, she

found love notes, flowers, champagne and Robert on one knee. The couple had an intimate wedding with immediate family members in attendance. The space, in shades of blush and burgundy, kept the décor minimal, with simple florals. The mansion holds a special place in the couple’s hearts as it was also the location of their first date, and they returned to it every fall for the scenery and activities. Jennifer’s parents built custom yard games the group played during after-dinner drinks, and everyone ended the memorable night with a hayrack ride to a nearby fire pit to roast s’mores as a family.

Ana Aponte and Matt Benshoof met while working at the same nursing home. Though they worked working in different departments, he continuously sought her assistance with residents—just to be around her. Some time later, Ana came home from visiting family in Mexico for Christmas, and Matt acted as though he had another gift for her. He had her turn her back so she couldn’t see the big box with a fake gift, then started talking about how much he loved her and wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. Ana figured out his plot and turned toward him

as he went down on bended knee to pop the question. The couple had an intimate wedding in the Magnolia Hotel’s romantic outdoor courtyard, decked out with a jewel tones of deep burgundy, plum, and emerald green. A harpist added elegance to the ceremony, and Matt’s friend, Dylan Kriz, surprised the guests when he rose to marry the couple. The reception was decorated with garden-style bouquets of roses, dahlias and peonies, while vintage décor and a plethora of candles and twinkle lights made the evening even more magical.

Even though the Caitlin McDermott and Jared Mertz had gone to the same school since kindergarten, it wasn’t until the seventh grade that they were in the same class. What started as a middle school crush turned into the love of a lifetime love when their friends squished the two of them into a bowling alley photobooth. Several years later, after following each other to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and back, Jared proposed to Caitlin at the Joslyn Art Museum. After she said yes, he took her to a friend’s apartment clubhouse where he surprised her with a dazzling engagement party filled with friends and family. The same air of excitement pervaded the wedding, with a romantic palette of mauve and

blush, accented by greenery. After getting ready for the big moment at The Barn at the Ackerhurst Dairy Farm, Caitlin and Jared had their first look; they read love letters to one another and shared an intimate moment before heading to the church they both grew up attending to say “I do.”

The personalized ceremony included favorite songs and close family members playing important roles. The reception was equally exceptional, featuring a live band and everyone on the dance floor. Jared showed off his skills on the drums, Caitlyn and her dance team performed the UNL fight song, and everyone polished off a snack of fries and shakes to commemorate the pair’s first date at Dairy Queen.

friend, Eli Hershier, played saxophone during the dinner, part of an elegant evening. The couple chose the Durham Museum as their reception spot for its rich history and its central location in downtown Omaha. Colleen and Karl shared a special first dance to Leon Bridges’ “River” and spent the rest of the evening celebrating their future among those closest to them.

Katie Carlson and Ross Reichardt met in Chicago; the rest is history. The couple celebrated their love with an indoor ceremony and outdoor reception. Lavish florals set the tone, with crisp whites offset by lush greenery. The bridesmaids wore dresses in blush pinks and cool, rosy satins in varying styles, reflected the eclectic vintage décor. Inside, exposed wood contrasted with posh lounge chairs for chic whimsy; assorted candles, candies, and

floral centerpieces of white roses, dahlias and lilacs adorned the farmhouse tables and made the tablescapes simply enchanting. A mouthwatering two-tier strawberry vanilla bean cake from Sweet Magnolias Bake Shop took center stage — with playful florals from Bouquet Omaha, it looked as divine as it tasted. Later, a live band got everyone on their feet, and the fairytale evening ended with a grand finale fireworks display.

For Darby Jones and Dakota Loudner, the night of the proposal took them back to where it all began: Kansas City. It was a romantic adventure—a scavenger hunt visiting various date locations. Their wedding day found them surrounded by fall colors of oranges and yellows, but they were inspired to incorporate shades of pink and added

pampas and other natural grasses throughout their floral arrangements. Stella, their puppy, joined in on the walk down the aisle. Later that day, the couple enjoyed watching their wedding video, seeing their love story played out. A favorite moment came in the evening, dancing to “Piano Man” surrounded by friends and family.

Amber Gonka and Tyler Knuth both grew up in Columbus, but didn’t start dating until late in college — then dated long distance while Amber completed optometry school. After almost 10 years as couple, Tyler popped the question. He planned it to be a complete surprise, and after a long day of house renovation shopping, the two were on the back patio admiring the sunset when Tyler dropped to one knee and asked her to marry him. Before he could even finish, Amber was already saying yes. Because of Covid-19, planning was revised several times, moving the ceremony from a destination wedding in Mexico to an Omaha

wedding—which turned into a wonderful opportunity for an intimate ceremony at a timeless venue. The historic Cottonwood Hotel was the perfect place to say “I do.” Florals of muted creams and blush signaled the ambiance of romance, while statement custom pillars laced with lush flowers and greenery complemented the venue’s charming architecture. The couple treated their guests to a mouthwatering five-course meal paired with wine and live jazz. A surprise drive-by of friends who couldn’t attend because of Covid-19 was an extra-special moment in their celebration of love with close friends and family.

Kayla Thompson and Johnny Turco literally took a philosophical approach when they met at Creighton University. They first met in a big philosophy lecture hall, but it wasn’t until the second, much smaller course, that sparks started to fly. Kayla discovered she was the only student who wasn’t a philosophy major, but she recognized one guy (yes, Johnny), so she sat down next to him. Eventually a study session turned into dinner, then, after a lot of patience and a little persuasion from Johnny, Kayla agreed to go on a “real” date. After many more dates, on a camping trip in Lovewell

State Park, Johnny popped the question. They held the wedding at Creighton, too, with a small gathering of 20 family members and friends, because of COVID precautions; they honored departed loved ones with photos at the ceremony and reception. After the ceremony, they celebrated at Nicola’s Italian Wine and Fare, a favorite for special occasions. Kayla was delighted with her bouquet of bountiful pink, ivory and purple blossoms, plus a locket in memory of her grandfather. A highlight was the reception toasts — “They made us laugh and cry,” Kayla says.

Andrew Flair and Macy Hollingsed were complete strangers before she went to a friend’s family lake house in 2015. Macy’s friend had also invited Andrew to teach them how to fish. They hit it off and began dating the next month. Fishing again figured in their romance when Andrew surprised Macy four years later at the same lake house. She thought she was helping Andrew test some new fishing baits, but as he went to change his bait, he pulled out a ring box instead. The couple chose The Barn at Ackerhurst

Dairy Farm because they had attended a wedding there a few years prior and loved the intimate, elegant feel of the space. To balance the warm wood in the barn, they used fresh, neutral-hued florals with dried grasses. They wanted to make each guest feel special so included personalized hand sanitizers and Albanese Gummi Bears in their gift boxes. Macy reports that the best moment was at the reception, when they were announced as Mr. and Mrs. Flair, as friends and family cheered.

Jessica Flores and Joel Dizona share a love of exercise; in fact, it’s what brought them together, as they met through a mutual friend at the gym. Being in shape no doubt helped when they hiked the Manitou Incline in the Colorado Rockies (billed as “the holy grail of cardio for locals and athletes alike”) that ended with a very scenic proposal. Their wedding was an equally scenic affair. The couple celebrated by preparing with family and friends throughout the day, which concluded

with a stunning sunset as the backdrop for their outdoor garden venue. Lauritzen Gardens was the perfect setting for the couple, providing the fresh greenery they loved, a natural background for their palette of greens and neutral colors. Jessica was especially pleased with her hometown florist, Bloomworks Floral in Council Bluffs, Iowa, who brought her ideas to life. A favorite detail was the handwritten calligraphy on the escort cards by Miranda Writes. *

For her big day, bride Lily Gillam drew inspiration from the warmth and caring she’s always felt visiting her Grand-daddy and Gigi— the same pure love that she feels with new husband Ryan. As fate would have it, she found a dress she knew captured all those feelings as soon as she tried it on. The elegant boho “Marcail” gown by Willowby features intricate lace, a tassel-tied back and billowing bell sleeves. “It felt like I was a 1970s bride,” she recalls. “I’ve always been an old soul, and so has Ryan, so I knew he’d love it too.”

Inspired by the colors of a hazy summer day, this suite in soft whites and peaceful blues, is like a refreshing breeze, coupled with intriguing details and owner/designer Laura Green’s signature calligraphy in a shimmery bronze ink. “I love layering different textures in my designs,” Green says. “Here, I used handmade paper and envelopes, recycled chiffon ribbon and a naturally gathered feather to create a fascinating visual and tactile experience.”

Luxurious jewel tones and the glow of candlelight made this intimate evening at The Magnolia Hotel absolutely magical. From the vintage décor to the garden-style bouquets to the fairy lights twinkling above, Ana Aponte and Matt Benshoof’s wedding was a dream come true, with a creative assist from Jessica Berzins of Magnolia Events and Creations.

Laura Elizabeth Photography is based in Lincoln, but who could say no to Utah’s Arches National Park, where she documented this adventurous elopement? “Between the barefoot bride and her flowy cape, the couple fit in perfectly with the natural desert element,” says Laura Elizabeth of this dreamy moment she captured.

Leave it to a florist to have the best florals at her own wedding— even if it means planning her date around when her ideal choices would be in bloom. “Flowers were definitely top priority, so we decided to plan a spring wedding, when all of my favorite spring blooms were in season,” says Lauren Barratt, owner of Lavish Flower Design. For the bouquet in her May wedding, she chose a fragrant mix in shades of peach, creams and lavender, with garden roses, sweet pea, clematis, poppies, ranunculus and plumosa vine. She continued the spring garden theme in her reception. Fragrant blossoms greeted guests thanks to a mix of potted plants, plus cement vessels and clear glass urns overflowing with flowers. “It was definitely the spring garden wedding of my dreams!” Barratt recalls.
