WE ARE ENTERING A BOLD NEW ERA of wedding style, and we’re so happy you’re joining us for the adventure, dear reader! Norms are being redefined, rules are being broken, traditions are being rewritten, and we’re here for it.

While this issue has so many moments to be inspired by, I have a few personal favorites — our features “Sealed With A Kiss” (page 28) and “Down the Garden Path” (page 36). Vibrant hues are having a moment, and these are breathtaking examples of how to embrace colorful designs for your fall and winter events.

This sweet delicacy from Sugar Coma Treats brings in an interesting element: sprigs of cotton, along with other florals, over delicate sculpted pink frosting with gold detailing.

Pink and orange florals — among them, roses, silver dollar eucalyptus, magnolia and nude carnations — by Lavish Flower Design burst from tall gold stands. Dried grain sheaves and dried fan palms add to the rustic, natural vibe. The white table is adorned with delicate bouquets of the same florals, interspersed between the table settings.

Preserving the highlights of your wedding day on video may be one of the best decisions you’ll make.

THE LOOK ON HIS FACE when you walk down the aisle. The smile spreading across her face as she says “I do.” The tremor in Grandpa’s voice as he proposes a toast. Those small, intimate moments can be captured forever in a video. Here, four videographers offer insights on the important role they can play.

It’s not unusual for this husband and wife team to juggle four or five cameras between them — and an assistant and a drone as well! While it’s obvious that the images captured will preserve those important moments in time, audio plays a huge role, as well, they point out. “Part of hiring a professional is hiring someone who is able to capture all the angles; this includes all the audio content needed to be able to retell the story of your wedding day,” Joel Rudloff says. The Rudloffs have a backup for every audio source — for example, having the officiant wearing a recording device but also plugging into the sound board. Another tip from this savvy team is that while high quality videography might not be in your budget, having someone record important moments — the ceremony itself, for example — means you won’t live with a lifetime of regret for not having those moments preserved. @afinaltake

Alisha Cerny, Alisha Cerny Films

Having someone you really connect with is critical when you choose your videographer, Cerny says. “Take a look at their work. Does it reflect what you are envisioning for your own wedding film? Are you going to be comfortable with them around you all day on your wedding day? Will you trust them to capture everything you’ve envisioned, and tailor-make your film just for you?” Like most videographers, Cerny spends the whole day with her clients. “I start while you are getting hair and makeup done and film every moment all the way to the time you are celebrating on the dance floor,” she says. “I take all of that footage and audio and create a cinematic retelling of your day, ranging from a four-minute to 10-minute film.” She also customizes her packages and can arrange to add other scenes as requested, such as rehearsal dinner, day-after celebrations and love story interviews.

“I’m a big fan of old home videos; the nostalgia and the memories are some things that I cherish the most in my life,” says Matczyszyn. “Video on your wedding day is no different. My wife and I re-watch our wedding video every year … and it has some of the best memories with the best people in our lives!” When seeking a videographer, he advises couples look at experience, quality of work, other testimonials from past couples and how well they work with other vendors. Matczyszyn offers à la carte options of a highlight video as well as full ceremony, toasts, first dances, and any extras on a flash drive.

Husband and wife team Laura and Shayne Cuong split photo and video duties — she handling photos with two cameras, he doing the video with one camera and mic. “We match our video coloring to our photos exactly, so our couples have consistent photos and video to remember their day by,” Laura says. Video captures full moments and emotions while photos can only freeze a portion of the moment or emotion. “You also get the mom wiping tears from her eyes as the dad walks their daughter down the aisle — you can get it in photos, but the full emotion of that moment is so much more precious in video.” @lauraelizabethphotos *

Kelly Davis and Matt Kathol’s summer wedding was swoon-worthy, from the idyllic farm setting to the carefully curated playlist in the dance tent. The couple’s love of nature was on display at their reception at Serenity Ridge, with their dogs participating in the nuptials — one was the “flower dog,” another accompanied the ring bearer. In lieu of a traditional unity candle ceremony, Kelly and Matt planted a tree to honor their grandfathers. “Both of our grandfathers had a love for nature and a love for trees,” Kelly says. “It was only fitting that we planted a tree to start our life.” To save the first look for Kelly’s walk

down the aisle, the two met pre-ceremony outside the church to say a prayer together. “My beautiful bride did make me cry seeing her come down the aisle,” Matt admits. As a nod to Matt’s work in the cattle industry, a friend made leather ear tags for each guest, and an artist friend even made a buffalo skull sculpture. Because Kelly and Matt are both avid equestrians, English and Western tack was incorporated into the décor in the dance tent. The bride and groom hand-cut and tied the napkins, and Matt built the bar. To honor the newlyweds’ passion for all things arboreal, guests left with seedlings as favors.

After working at the venue for two summers, Alexa had dreamed about having her wedding there; Alexa and Jon had officially tied the knot a year earlier in a backyard ceremony, but thought it would be great to celebrate their love here. Their daughter, Cecilia Madison, was the star of the show on their big day, coming down the aisle in a red wagon, as the “babe of honor.” The magic was

there for Jon, who says his bride looked “as beautiful as ever,” outfitted in a darling lace mini dress. Bridesmaids were styled in an array of floral gowns to go with the botanical theme. In the barn, wildflowers in amber glass bottles served as centerpieces, while hanging florals dressed windows, and a wall of mirrors added an eclectic touch. Family and friends are still talking about their unforgettable one-year anniversary. “The whole thing turned out beautifully,” Alexa said. “I could not have asked for a better day.”

Joe Dougherty’s romantic proposal to Sophia Dongilli was almost thwarted when his fiancée-to-be didn’t want to leave the house the night he planned to pop the question. With wet hair and no makeup, she finally went to her friend’s place for a girls’ night, and returned to find her home filled with rose petals, candles, photos and Joe on bended knee. The two immediately started planning their woodland-inspired wedding. The bride was dressed to impress in a show-stopping champagne-colored gown. As Sophia’s something borrowed, a band of cloth from her mother’s wedding gown tied stems of her bouquet together. Small framed photos

of the couple’s late grandmothers hung from the bride’s bouquet, and wedding portraits of grandparents from both sides also were on view. Hues of emerald, sage, copper and orange filled the venue, despite the summer date. “We don’t subscribe to the need to follow old-fashioned seasonal rules!” Sophia says. Centerpieces of candelabras, glass shadow boxes, metallic vases and lamps showcased their style. To pay homage to Sophia’s Italian roots, a traditional cookie table featured over 1,500 homemade cookies made from family recipes from both families; labels noted who made each cookie, with their relationship to the bride or groom.

Alecs Rumery’s favorite band, Amity Affliction, was making a stop in Kansas City on the Vans Warped Tour, and their lead singer, Joel Birch, was offering photo shoots, so Alecs booked a photo shoot for him and his girlfriend of two years, Steph Weides. Little did Steph know, this was more than a date at a concert — it was their engagement photo shoot with Birch behind the camera! During their three-year engagement they added a family member — their daughter, Presley, who was appointed the role of flower girl on their big day. She wore a custom gown that matched her mother’s and did a wonderful job lining the aisle with flowers before her parents tied the knot. Steph and her ladies in green

got ready in the on-site bridal suite as they prepped for the day. The bride’s bright botanicals were a spirited mix of roses, mums, cornflowers and ranunculus, among others. Steph’s favorite moment was when they posed for photos as newlyweds, because “it was the only time we were actually alone as a couple to slow down a bit,” she said. Inspired by vintage décor, the couple opted for brass and silver candlesticks for the tables, while the cake rested on an antique Singer sewing machine base table from Alecs’ grandfather. Steph and Alec were thrilled to officially get married surrounded by loved ones. “We loved all of our friends and family being able to come together and help us celebrate,” Steph said.

Lauren Diffey and Steihl Reeves wed in effortless style at the historic Durham Museum in Omaha. Steihl’s love of history, plus the art deco venue’s grand architecture and luxe details, clinched their decision. Their hues of dusty blue and navy popped against the venue’s neutral backdrop. As her “something blue,” cloth from Steihl’s great-grandmother’s dress was tied around Lauren’s bouquet, which also included blue thistle to go with their colors. The anticipation of the first look with the groom was a standout moment for Lauren. “I was so nervous and excited to see him,” she says. Steihl accessorized

with his great-grandfather’s pocket watch and handkerchief and his grandfather’s cufflinks. His favorite part of the day? Watching his breathtaking bride walk down the aisle among family and friends. The venue was filled with a timeless mix of hydrangeas, peonies and roses, while orchids, the groom’s pick, were present in the bridal bouquet and boutonniere. Guests could roam through the galleries during cocktail hour or opt for a sundae from the soda fountain and candy shop at the Durham. As a nightcap, newlyweds cut into one of four cakes which was topped with their new honorifics of Mr. & Mrs. Reeves.

With friends from near and far present, Tressa Little and Adam Gillen tied the knot on a crisp October day. Orange hues created an impeccable autumn color scheme, from the bridal party’s gowns and tuxes to the linens dressing the tables. Vintage Venue’s hardwood floors, exposed brick walls and dangling lights made their boho-chic wedding vision a reality. Emotions ran high during the bride and groom’s first look, as well as the father of the bride’s first look. “They were both very sentimental moments that I will treasure forever,” Tressa says. During the ceremony, the bridal

party and both families gathered with the couple to pray before they said their vows, followed by a unity candle lighting. In lieu of a traditional guest book, music-lovers Tressa and Adam thrifted records of their favorite genres and artists for guests to sign at their “for the record” table. To ensure one-on-one time with each guest, newlyweds greeted everyone as they got in line for the Chipotle-catered dinner, a crowd-pleaser. As the night went on, Adam savored the first dance. “We were just able to be alone and focus on the beauty of the decision we had just made,” he says.

Laurissa Germishuys and Christian Jelinek joke that they did things backwards, going on “honeymoon-quality vacations” before their wedding, thanks to her job as a travel agent. Though they stayed close to home for their wedding, the autumn ceremony at Lied Lodge was as enchanting as any exotic trip. Family abounded, with four sets of parents, plus step-brothers, sisters, and in-laws taking part, and Laurissa’s mother gave her a charm of all four grandparents to put in her bouquet. Bridesmaids were styled in mauve floor-length gowns, complementing the neutral palette of whites, nudes and light pinks.

After their first look, Laurissa and Christian said their vows at the ceremony installation swathed in beige drapery, pampas grass and blush roses, followed by rousing cheers from all present. The grand ballroom’s tables were adorned with tall centerpieces of dried and fresh flowers atop metal stands, with low candles to add to the ambience. Laurissa and her dad impressed everyone with their father-daughter waltz (they had been practicing for months!), and guests feasted on the delectable cake, decorated with the same pattern as Laurissa’s gown, just a few of the weekend’s unforgettable memories.

Grand views, soaring ceilings, a rich history and the warm ambience of a barn all appealed to Erynn Westfall and Aaron Mason when they sought a wedding venue. But “we wouldn’t consider ourselves country,” Erynn says, “so it was our goal to make the barn more of a black-tie venue.” They transformed the venue with twinkling lights on two dozen holiday trees and black and white décor with accents of mixed metals and greenery. On the eve of the winter wedding, they were blessed with a fresh dusting of snow, fit for their winter-inspired theme. The bridesmaids, in floorlength black gowns, matched the dapper groomsmen outfitted in black tuxes. “Every detail was perfect,” Erynn says. There were also some

memorable surprises, like when their five-tier cake toppled (their wedding crew managed to salvage it); meanwhile, despite shoes that didn’t quite fit (ouch), Aaron didn’t let that slow him down. As a keepsake, Polaroid photos with a greeting and signature from every guest were added to their guest book. Loved ones sipped on signature drinks, inspired by the couple’s dog, Yogi (who also showed up in their custom cake topper), and read fun facts about the couple on cocktail napkins. An anniversary dance had people flooding the dance floor, and the last couple dancing — the longest-married couple there — were Aaron’s grandparents. Everyone danced the night away and basked in the newlyweds’ bliss. *
