I AM SO EXCITED to be the new editor-in-chief of Nebraska

Wedding Day and the editorial director of Iron Diamond Media’s seven gorgeous bridal magazines. I have loved fashion magazines and weddings since I was a little girl. I poured over everything from Young Miss and Teen Beat (anyone remember those gems?) to Glamour and Vogue.

Every Sunday, I read all the wedding announcements in the Kansas City Star, clipping out my favorites and storing them in a box. So, when our owner, Sonja Babich, asked me to helm Nebraska Wedding Day, saying yes was a no-brainer. I have been the editor of our West Coast magazines for more than a dozen years, so to expand my role to include this beautiful state is an honor. In fact, I am one of the lucky ones who can say I have my dream job. Bridal gowns, bouquets and first dances all gathered on the pages of a glossy magazine … it’s perfection.

Alexis Keen’s request was simple: A European-style white bouquet that looked as though its blooms had been gathered from a garden. The bride is a member of the American Midwest Ballet company, so dance naturally held a place of great significance throughout their special day. The couple shared their first dance as husband and wife to “La Vie en Rose,” and their final dance was to Hilary Duff ’s “What Dreams Are Made Of.” In a day brimming with breathtaking details, the most heartfelt moment unfolded when Whitney and Mitch returned to the dance floor after the guests had departed. Furthermore, for guests staying at hotels, consider accommodations that offer the option to offset their stay’s carbon footprint, such as Lied Lodge in Nebraska City, where every guest can make their stay carbon-neutral through tree planting.

Hilary Kaiser of Elite Events Rental offers these valuable tips about rentals. “Two of the biggest ways to reduce the amount of waste produced from your event is by renting linens and dishware. Our linens and dishware items are used over and over again.” Using non-disposable place settings encourages the principle of reuse and promotes sustainability by reducing single-use items.

AT THE TABLE Selecting a certified zero-waste caterer is a pivotal step in minimizing your wedding’s environmental impact. It isn’t always clear, however, who should get this bonus, especially when you aren’t experienced with handling an event of this magnitude. Couples often find themselves at a loss about how to calculate the cost and which vendors should be tipped—and are dismayed to discover on the day of the wedding that their budget just increased. To prepare, think of situations where you would normally include a tip, such as a haircut or dinner out. So it stands to reason that these businesses also are on the list for a gratuity.

“WILL YOU BE MY BRIDESMAID?” The second most important question (the first being the proposal!) in the planning process is asking your nearest and dearest to be a part of your big day. “The special moments shared between the bride and her bridesmaids should be celebrated and highlighted,” says Lindsey Raridon, owner of the floral and event rental company Rose Joy. “Bridesmaids don’t get enough attention, and they’re such a big part of the day—and the planning process. They deserve some love!” As such, Lindsey joined forces with photographer Laura Cuong to inspire brides to take a moment to celebrate the loved ones who stand by your side throughout the process. A beautiful getting-ready scene at The James House was created that included a field of flowers comprising garden roses, eremurus, willow, larkspur, dianthus and tulips.

Tyler Graham and Elliot Egr said “I do” in Omaha’s dreamy Lauritzen Gardens, joined by their treasured friends and family. They worked with their planner, Rachel Myers of Rachel J. Events, to create their perfect “disco garden party.” Alongside Myers, they dreamed up the unique concept of a three-aisle ceremony.

“Elliot and I, along with our wedding parties, entered down the outside aisles,” says Tyler. “Then we exited up the middle aisle to represent equality and our unity as a couple.” Not only did the day progress from the pavilion to the Great Hall, but the color palette also took a vibrant journey. Soft florals and neutral tones set the scene for the ceremony. As the night progressed, they began to add bursts of color. Moments of pink were slowly incorporated, from the groomswomens' blush gowns to the hot pink seating chart. The color story culminated with the final statement piece: a round fuchsia bar with disco balls, a nod to the Valentino Fall/Winter 2022-2023 fashion show and Tyler’s love for fashion. The duo wore sophisticated black tuxes for the ceremony and ended the dazzling night in chic white ones, sporting wide smiles and executing joyous dance moves. From the outset, Ashley Husing and Cade Crowell were certain about infusing personal touches into their special day, starting on the bright summer morning of their wedding. The day dawned soft and gray, the sun coyly hiding, the rain mercifully holding off, as if nature itself was in cahoots with the couple’s plans.

Ashley’s sentimental side was evidenced by her getting-ready robe—crafted from her mother’s wedding dress. Cade, meanwhile, planned a poker game for his groomsmen, blending camaraderie with playful relaxation. The couple’s aesthetic combined classic elegance with intentional simplicity, a perfect mirror of their romance. The emotional crescendo of the day was at their first look, a moment suspended in time during which they shared their private vows. Ashley’s grandfather officiated the outdoor ceremony at the altar set against a small waterfall. As the newlyweds recessed up the aisle, they were enveloped in a cloud of bubbles blown by happy family and friends. The reception featured candles casting a warm glow and the head table under a canopy of lights and greenery, setting a romantic ambience. The Crowells entered their celebration via the grand staircase and performed a choreographed first dance to a Michael Buble tune.

In a quirky touch, guests were invited to leave messages of happiness and blessings on a “phone” in a repurposed telephone booth. Describing their love story as a “modern fairytale” after meeting at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Yenisleidy Ojeda and Brian Wilke decided to fuse the lively energy of Sin City and their romantic relationship into their wedding day. Sarah Meduna, owner and CEO of Styled in White Events, designed a breathtaking celebration at A View West Shores featuring soft textures and light hues with modern touches. Standing at a flower-bedecked outdoor ceremony site with picturesque lake views and surrounded by 70 of their closest loved ones, Yeni and Brian became husband and wife. Guests found their seats at the custom escort wall bearing luggage tags that doubled as favors. The reception featured lavish blooms of baby’s breath, roses, hydrangeas and orchids. Cold sparklers welcomed newlyweds to the space, and Yeni debuted her second look, a fun, fringed and feathered dress, the perfect outfit in which to dance the night away. Flickering candles created a dreamy sense of enchantment as everyone gathered on the dance floor to celebrate. The three-tiered cake, a sundae bar and a coffee cart offering an array of lattes and espresso were sweet ways to wrap up the festivities. As nurses, Anahi Saenz and Jake Steiner got to know each other through work—during COVID, no less. But it wasn’t until they were at a mutual friend’s birthday party that they got a chance to really talk. They not only kept talking, they began dating, then traveling—together, as traveling nurses. During their assignment in Florida, Jake decided it was time to propose to his best friend. They kept their wedding at A View on State simple so they could spend time with the friends and family members who converged on Omaha from across the country; they said their vows under a sunny sky as the important people in their lives looked on from the shaded seating area, then everyone headed inside for the reception. Twinkling lights and a wealth of candles glowed over tables set with white and mauve linens and bouquets of pink and white blooms. They don’t call it the heartland for nothing. Kellen Wagner and Wyatt Kee proved it with the most magical movie-worthy meet-cute. Kellen, a nurse, moved to Nebraska a few years prior to care for her ailing grandpa. “While staying at her grandparents’ farm, she got to know their farmhand, a boy named Wyatt,” explains their photographer. “And so, the farmer’s granddaughter and the farmhand ended up dating.” The pair hosted a sweetly rustic wedding where the cornfields meet the sky. From the outset, their plans were laced with elements deeply rooted in their story. They sought to have a wedding day that mirrored their bond: simple yet profound, modern yet timeless. Among the must-haves were bouquets bursting with white roses and greenery set against a color palette that whispered elegance: black, blush and peach. The couple opted to follow tradition and wait until the ceremony to see one another but chose to exchange private letters beforehand around a corner from one another. Under a white gazebo bedecked with large, lush arrangements and backed by open fields, the couple made their promises. The reception space was a vision of down-home chic: a rustic farm setting with the sophistication of a classic ballroom. The barn, draped in diaphanous white fabric, became a canvas for Kellen and Wyatt’s love story, with wagon wheel chandeliers overhead and glowing marquee letters spelling out their now-shared last name. Quynh Tran and Hai Dinh have traveled the world together, but when it came to their wedding day, it was very much about family. The couple said their vows in a Vietnamese Catholic ceremony at the Immaculate Heart of Mary, during which both bride and groom read passages from the Bible, and a large choir filled the air with music. Quynh, breathtaking in her Justin Alexander gown, accessorized her look with delicate gold and pearl earrings from Tiffany & Co. The bridesmaids’ gowns, in blue-green sea glass satin, added a wash of soothing color, as did Hai’s deep blue suit. The reception at the Lincoln Commercial Club featured arrangements of white roses, hydrangeas and baby’s breath—much like the bridesmaids’ bouquets—gracing each table, while guests were full of smiles and congratulations for the newlyweds. Though the ambience was sophisticated, the day was about food and fun, with Vietnamese traditions playing a central role. A seven-course dinner was served family style, with dishes including a seafood combo with fried rice and crab, roasted quail, Szechuan-style whole fish, lobster, and gai lan (a type of broccoli) and beef. Afterward, the bride and groom took to the dance floor, and the fun continued with karaoke.
