A New— More Creative Normal

WE DDINGS ARE ABOUT UNITY: You and your soulmate becoming one. Your family and friends coming together to celebrate your union. Your wedding professionals working together to make your big day happen. And despite the social distancing we’ve adapted to, something magical is happening.

The soon-to-be-wed and the thousands of creative professionals who work with them are reimagining traditions, reevaluating what matters most and discovering new ways to gather in the name of love. As we put together this issue, we worked with many unknowns and a new way of doing things—but the excitement, dedication and determination of couples continues to inspire us every day. Our hearts are with you, and we are here to tell you that weddings are still happening and will continue to happen, in inventive and awe-inspiringly innovative ways.

From pressing social issues that raise our awareness and care for others (see Planning with Intention on page 42) to health concerns that spur us to think outside the cake box and concoct the cutest little single-serving sweets (see some adorably tiny treats on page 28), the wedding world is reinventing itself to become more flexible and more dynamic—better for everyone.

As safety precautions continue to evolve, we encourage you to follow the most current regulations in your area. Having a planner on your team can be a great asset during these times. They keep track of changes in regulations and provide guidance on how to make your event as safe as possible, for you and all involved.

Human nature is resilient. Together, we are facing our new challenges with imagination and determination, and uniting to celebrate what matters most—love.

Keep Planning

WHAT A YEAR IT HAS BEEN –for all Minnesotans, and especially for our Minnesotan wedding couples. 2020 has thrown some curve balls–some we were able to hit, but others were strike outs. When it comes to weddings, it is a time full of emotions for the engaged couples, families that are involved, and even for our wedding industry. Throwing a pandemic in the mix is not ideal, and we all must work together to continue to make those wedding dreams come true. This year just took more effort, emotions, and energy to make that happen.

With so many uncertainties, many couples moved their dream wedding to 2021, decided to elope or opted for a more intimate gathering. What I love about this year is that it made couples realize what was most important to them and how they really wanted to celebrate their love story. Some of the small things turned into big things, and the big things turned into small things. 2020 allowed us to look at everything in a different perspective and move forward with new visions for a quintessential wedding day. Newly engaged couples, I encourage you to keep planning, keep booking your vendors, and keep designing the wedding day that you always imagined. Your day will come–and it will be perfect!

For the recently engaged couple, check out our Vendor Directory on MNBride.com and turn to our Essentials Guide on page 91 in the magazine. Here, you will find a variety of our dedicated, knowledgeable and creative Minnesota Bride members that are ready to assist you with new guidelines while making your wedding dreams come true. And, don’t forget to sign up for our bi-weekly eNewsletter on our website. This is where we share our recently published real weddings, advice, inspiration and so much more. From finding the perfect vendors to sparking trendy ideas, Minnesota Bride is here to help you connect the dots to make your big day a dream come true.

One last thing: 2020, we are not going to miss you. 2021, we cannot wait to have fun with you! Cheers to a new year bringing more smiles, more love, and more happily ever afters!

TICKLED PINK

WARM, ROMANTIC TONES INSPIRED AriAnna Meyer and Brittany Navratil of Lilacs and Lace Events as they created this spread for couples planning amid pandemic limitations. “We thought everyone could use a little more color and a lot more love! And what better colors to represent love than shades of red and pink. Coming off of wedding trends of whites and greens, couples now have a chance to be bold with their color choices.” Whether it’s for a second celebration with a palette that brings the zest or a small reception with a more traditional look, this uplifting mix of vibrant hues and deliberate details is a welcome vision of bright, happy times.

1. POPS OF PERSONALITY

Adding pops of color with florals is a fun way of infusing your personality in your flowers, says Katie Huseboe of Abloom. Featuring trending botanicals like ranunculus and orchids, this brilliant arrangement adds a touch of nature to the party.

2.

EAT, DRINK AND BE MARRIED

If you’re planning an intimate soirée but still craving timehonored elements, Meyer and Navratil suggest single-serving versions of the classics, such as this charcuterie board by A’BriTin Catering & Hospitality. “Individual apps and desserts are perfect for keeping tradition during a pandemic.” The vivid pink dragonfruit mango lemonade from Hitch & Sip delivers extra pizazz.

3. LET’S GET PERSONAL

“Intimate weddings are a perfect setting for a memorable hand-written invitation,” says Shannon Crissey, lead designer of Epitome Papers. Soft, handmade paper adds another dimension to the suite, and the colorful calligraphy is a fun personal touch.

4. MAKE IT SPARKLE

Bring on the bling with rings that coordinate with the rosy theme. Hers is a rose-gold diamond ring with pear-shaped diamond center paired with a rose-gold diamond band, his is a simple yet sophisticated tantalum and rose-gold band; all are from Continental Diamond.

5 ORGANICALLY OMBRE

From the palest pinks to the deepest reds, this bouquet by Abloom is a mesmerizing study of shades. “An ombre bouquet is a unique take on the traditional bridal bouquet,” says Huseboe. The asymmetrical silhouette adds to the modern vibe.

6 PLATED TO PERFECTION

When it’s time to dine, a glamorous table setting by Revel & Flourish ups the ante. Glimmers of gold complement the peachy pinks, and a hand-written place card is a thoughtfully personalized detail.

NEW VENUE

Meet Me at the Lake

Couples looking for a scenic lakeside venue need look no further than the new Pavilion at Madden’s on Gull Lake in Brainerd. At 10,000 square feet, the pavilion highlights breathtaking lake views as the perfect wedding backdrop for nature-loving couples. The venue can seat up to 250 guests, so if you have a big guest list, they’ll have plenty of space to socialize. Elegant architectural features such as stone columns and a granite countertop bar add striking décor elements, while the waterfront adds natural charm. The open show-kitchen,

alongside grill and char-broiler stations, gives a glimpse of the thoughtful preparation that goes into each meal. As the sun sets, a grand fireplace warms away the chill of crisp evening breezes. A full audio system keeps the party going for guests who want to dance the night away, while those who stay on after the wedding have activity options such as waterskiing and golf.

BRIDAL ATTIRE TURNING A NEW PAIGE

Anthropologie’s wedding brand, BHLDN, recently teamed up with designer Hayley Paige to launch an exclusive bridal collection. Paige’s whimsical approach provides an array of playful new gowns and rompers created with the BHLDN bride in mind.

“This capsule collection offers accessibility, bespoke-style wardrobe options and hints of nostalgia inspired by female icons of the ’90s,” says Paige.

Launched in summer 2020, the initial season of the collection included three wedding gowns, three cocktail looks, and an overskirt (all in sizes 0-18). The collection also featured two flower girl dresses and one bridesmaid

dress with three color options. The collaboration is ongoing, and will feature new Hayley Paige x BHLDN gowns each season. Designed specifically for BHLDN, they are available exclusively in BHLDN stores and online at BHLDN.com, making BHLDN the only place to purchase a new Hayley Paige gown online.

Modern Update on a Minnesota Classic

Willow Brooke Farm’s rustic elegance and countryside charm—acres of vineyards amid lush, rolling hills— make it an excellent location to toast to new beginnings. The venue, now under new ownership, is a serene countryside destination in southeastern Minnesota’s Flower Valley. Up to 300 guests can

celebrate here at both indoor and outside options. Within an hour of the Twin Cities, guests can escape to this enchanting property featuring a century-old historic barn, a new White Willow barn, and scenic backdrops for photos. The White Willow barn’s fairy-tale aesthetic comes complete

BEAUTY A NEW KIND OF NATURAL

Founded in 2015, Minneapolis-based skin care company Story has relaunched with a new formulation. Owner Carmen Kubista initially created this line out of a need for change. After her daughter was diagnosed with celiac disease and her son with a tree nut allergy, she reassessed the ingredients she brought into her home—not only in her kitchen, but also in her family’s skin care products. From this reevaluation, Kubista’s formulation of truly natural and gluten-free ingredients was born. Since then, the line has evolved as she continues to perfect a combination of clean, effective and safe ingredients. Story’s game changer is eggshell membrane, a powerful ingredient that will leave your skin feeling soft, supple and refreshed.

With products suitable for all skin types and no animal testing, Story offers a full regimen of serum, moisturizer and cleanser that will help you feel safe, confident and radiant as you prep for your big day. Megan White storyskincare.com

RENOVATION

The Sky’s the Limit

Located in picturesque river bluff country, the newly renovated Skyroom at Red Wing Golf Course has a classic elegance to elevate every wedding. The venue, within the sprawling, historic golf course, is open year-round for ceremonies and receptions, allowing couples to enjoy the scenery in any season.

Inside, windows stretch from floor to ceiling, and the white stone fireplace provides a striking backdrop. Two full-service bars and a cocktail lounge offer plenty of spaces for guests to mingle, while a wraparound deck adds a perfect spot where guests can stroll and enjoy the sweeping views of Hiawatha Valley. Couples can also book the Walsh House, which can function as a rehearsal location or prep headquarters before the wedding. With a neutral palette and spacious interior, the Skyroom offers a clean slate for any couple to dress up according to their vision. “We love to see our venue come to life in so many different ways,” says director of sales Brittany O’Neill. “We wanted to create a blank canvas that goes with any style, and I feel like we really accomplished that.”

DELICIOUS DISPLAYS

QUINCY HALL

Quincy Hall showcases this adventurous display that finds surprising new roles for desserts-as-décor. They star in the bright floral ensembles from Lilacs and Lace Events, and as lemon meringue cake pops and flower-studded white chocolate mendiants from Perfect Piece Sweets, and even float gently from filament as if in delectable free fall.

MINNESOTA BRIDE mnbride.com 28

Taking center stage among the traditional linen-draped tables is the cake wall with a little something for everyone, arrayed on pristine floating shelves. The round cakes from dough-phoria are almond-raspberry and vanilla-almond; “dessert boxes” from Sugarspoon Desserts each contain a single serving of cake.

mnbride.com MINNESOTA BRIDE 29

1. EDIBLE BOUQUET DOUGH-PHORIA

A perfectly crafted square, this cake from dough-phoria is like a magical spring garden on the outside with the taste of summer inside: three layers of lemon cake with raspberry jam and vanilla buttercream filling. On the surface, a sprinkling of buttercream and edible pansies add color and texture.

2. LET COLOR PREVAIL LILACS AND LACE EVENTS

Stunning florals of dianthus and statice from Lilacs and Lace Events grace the tables and play off the delicate edible blossoms in the desserts themselves.

3. PRETTIER THAN A PICTURE BUTTERCREAM

A dainty floral design wraps around the Nova, a triple layer of vanilla cake with a double layer of raspberry mousse filling, covered with buttercream icing made with heavy cream and a blend of white chocolate mousse.

4. A SPECIAL GIFT SUGARSPOON DESSERTS

Brown sugar almond cake with passion fruit gelée and Italian buttercream comes perfectly packaged in a small Lucite box to take home as a keepsake. Boxes come in different dimensions; each contains a single serving of cake topped with an edible pansy.

CITY SLICK

Are you a country girl craving a little taste of metropolitan life? Minneapolis’ Hewing Hotel has what you need. This modern gathering spot in the hip North Loop neighborhood is a reimagined farm implement showroom and warehouse that still features much of its original historic character in exposed brick and timber.

Or head to the other half of the Twin Cities and live it up with a different type of historic adventure at the Saint Paul Hotel. When it comes to timeless elegance and sophistication, you can

count on this local landmark with a storied history. Having hosted a range of celebrities and dignitaries over the years, this iconic venue will give you the star treatment.

STOP AND SHOP

Looking for a little retail therapy or a place to cash in all those gift cards you just received? Unwind with a stay at the trendy Radisson Blu Mall of America in Bloomington. Attached to the mall by a skyway, everything is just steps away. From shopping to an aquarium to mini-golf, there’s something for

everyone—and if you’re planning a winter honeymoon, it’s a great way to enjoy Minnesota without its notoriously frigid weather.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME

If immersing yourself in nature is your Shangri-la, head south for a quaint, quiet getaway at the Sacred Clay Inn. This inviting bed and breakfast is located on over 100 acres in Minnesota’s lush bluff country. Indulge your senses in their English gardens or venture out for hiking and trout fishing, then stroll the streets of historic Lanesboro nearby.

The North Shore, a staple of family vacations, will bring out the kid in you. With a variety of lodging options, Grand Superior Lodge and Larsmont Cottages in Two Harbors offer idyllic settings for a tranquil hideaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In nearby Lutsen-Tofte, you’ll be swept away by the breathtaking scenery of Bluefin Bay, Surfside on Lake Superior and the luxury log homes of Temperance Landing. Surrounded by hills, state parks and lake views, you can soak up the North Shore in comfort.

ODDS ARE IN YOUR FAVOR

Stay and play at Mystic Lake Casino, Minnesota’s largest. Located in Prior Lake on the southern edge of the Twin Cities metro, you can try your odds at blackjack or tee up for a round of golf. This one-stop shop has a wide selection of restaurants and bars to keep you refreshed and a spa where you can relax. Looking for lively entertainment? Mystic Lake also hosts a variety of concerts and comedy tours throughout the year.

PLAY HOUSE

Escape to the historic Hope Glen Farm in Cottage Grove in the east metro for a fun-filled stay in their whimsical Tree House Honeymoon Suite. Nestled among the sturdy limbs of a 150-year-old oak, it’s everything childhood dreams are made of. Look for the “secret room” or climb to the top of a 40-foot tower that’s home to a telescope, perfect for a romantic evening of stargazing. It features four levels, four outdoor decks, two fireplaces and a Jacuzzi, making it a dreamy retreat for all ages. *

Wedding Planning with Intention

AS SOCIAL JUSTICE PROTESTS SWEPT ACROSS THE GLOBE and prompted new levels of awareness last summer, changes were also happening in the wedding world. Locally and nationally, professionals in the industry are uniting to empower their fellow business owners who are Black, Indigenous and people of color (BIPOC).

How does that relate to your wedding? Your big day creates memories that last a lifetime—and planning that day can have a lasting impact on

the people who help make your vision a reality. Here are a few simple things you can do to support BIPOC vendors.

PLANNING
BELLA MYSTIQUE

1. CHOOSE YOUR VENDORS WITH INTENTION. Faith Folayan, owner and creative director of This Love Weddings points out, “The most impactful way is to hire BIPOC-owned vendors, especially when their values align with yours. Engaged couples can support by being intentional with their buying power. As you’re researching businesses, styles and prices, take a few minutes to research the owners, too, and keep BIPOC-owned businesses in mind.”

“I have seen a huge increase in the past few months from people wanting to support BIPOCowned businesses. Since May [of 2020], probably eight out of 10 orders are from people wanting to support minority businesses,” says Brandie Itman, cake artist and owner of Bella Nava Creations. To start your vendor research, Itman suggests checking out Spicy Green Book, which is a directory of Black-owned food and beverage businesses.

Also keep in mind, however, that you should view diversity as more than the trend du jour: Josey Stafford, owner and lead planner of Sixpence Events clarifies, “The vendors you hire for your wedding should be a good fit for you and your fiancé. You shouldn't hire a BIPOC just because it’s currently the thing to do." Consider such businesses as you would any vendor and hire based on merit, expertise in their field and whether their style aligns with yours.

“I've been lucky to begin working with an influx of folks who share my values: justice and liberation for all people,” says photographer and racial justice educator Celisia Stanton. “The folks who've reached out to me don’t just want to support me because I check a diversity box, they want to support me because we mutually believe and want to work towards a future where all people can truly be free.” Stanton adds, “The most important thing that engaged couples can do is the same thing that any person can do: Continue the momentum and continue working alongside folks doing amazing work. This is a lifelong commitment.”

Folayan says that her company makes a point to work with a diverse group of vendors for each event. “Be open and intentional when it comes to sourcing and booking wedding professionals of color,” she says. “They are excited and welcome the opportunity to be a part of your special day!”

Besides traditional wedding vendors, think outside the box for other wedding needs. Brittany Morris, owner and creative designer of event planning business Bella Mystique, suggests purchasing wedding party gifts from local BIPOC-owned businesses, such as Style a Go-Go, and Spoon and Theory. Folayan also recommends pampering your party with services from The Nail Bar or goodies from Body Love Products.

2. THANK YOUR VENDORS BOTH DURING AND AFTER THE PROCESS. A little kindness goes a long way in supporting all the people who work tirelessly to bring your vision to life. Offer to donate to an organization in their name or give them a gift card to a local business to show how much you appreciate them.

3. SHARE THAT APPRECIATION FOR YOUR WEDDING VENDORS AFTER THE BIG DAY. “If any couples have worked with BIPOC-owned vendors, leave a review of their services, talk about them to friends or family or give a shout out to them on social

media,” Morris suggests. In a world of smartphones, we often judge based on reviews that are at our fingertips. Taking a few minutes to write about how well your vendors treated you or how beautiful their creations are can help them immensely. Little things like this can help BIPOC-owned businesses expand to a larger client base.

4. PROMOTE YOUR VENDORS ON SOCIAL MEDIA. Like, comment and share the work that your vendors post on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest. "It’s been great to see more diversity in the images that brands, businesses and brides are sharing and posting,” Stafford says. She reminds us, however, that this goes a little deeper than just reposting. “I think it’s important to not view this movement as a pet project, as something [people] can just repost, repin or retweet mindlessly, without actually doing some legwork. Before you share something, make sure you understand it and have read the whole story."

5. BE OPEN ABOUT YOUR OWN BACKGROUND AND THE POSSIBILITY OF DISCUSSING DIVERSITY WITH OTHERS. Express yourself and share your heritage with your vendors; they can use it as inspiration in planning for your wedding. "Part of what makes this movement so special is the way it teaches us to step out of our ‘normal’ and be open to other possibilities and avenues,” Morris says. “Couples can take the same approach when planning and designing their wedding. Don't be afraid to showcase more of who you are and make your own traditions."

Embracing your families’ marriage traditions and beliefs can be a powerful starting point for planning your wedding, and it’s empowering for people to see you showcasing your cultural background, especially if they see people like themselves reflected in your celebration.

mnbride.com MINNESOTA BRIDE 45
Weddings can be a really useful time for reflection, as they are one of the rare times in life where all your friends and family can come together in one space.

Planning with a more diverse team of vendors can also present an opportunity for discussions with friends and family. Sometimes these discussions take people out of their comfort zone, but they can also lead to constructive conversations where everyone learns something new or starts to see life from a new angle. Greater awareness and a deeper understanding of people who aren’t “like me” can help normalize the notion of diversity—that we’re all different in our own unique and beautiful ways, yet share much in common with each other—often outweighing the differences.

You could also consider the diversity of your guest list. “Weddings can be a really useful time for reflection, as they are one of the rare times in life where all your friends and family can come together in one space,” says Stanton. “If it's not very diverse, why might that be?” You don’t need to invite more people hoping to ‘improve’ the diversity of your list, she says; but “racism so badly needs to be dismantled, and reflecting on how you’ve been showing up in your own life is an important first step toward that goal."

6. PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS AND INCORPORATE CHARITABLE GIVING INTO YOUR CELEBRATION . Consider forgoing the traditional wedding registry and instead donate to organizations that are working toward more inclusive communities or helping level the playing field for people from marginalized communities. In lieu of gifts, ask your guests to donate to an organization in your honor. Or instead of party favors, leave a little note card at their place setting informing them that you have donated in their honor to your organization of choice.

As always, be sure to vet the organizations beforehand to verify they are legit. Don’t have time to research them? Here are a few local organizations recommended by Folayan, Itman, Morris, Stafford and Stanton:

• Spicy Green Book, an online directory of Black-owned food and beverage businesses across the nation.

• The Wilder Foundation's Community Equity Program; it helps BIPOC community leaders and changemakers gain experience in public policy at the Minnesota Legislature.

• Big Brothers, Big Sisters, whose goal is to create mentoring relationships that will help children achieve their full potential.

• A Mothers Love Initiative, whose mission is “Bringing Back the Village.” They aim to strengthen families and the community with boots-on-theground outreach, moral support and mentorship.

• Twin Cities Mutual Aid Project, a network that can help you find individuals and organizations in your community that need assistance. *

CAMROSE HILL FLOWER FARM

(OPPOSITE PAGE) Surround yourself in the lush, natural beauty of Camrose Hill Flower Farm.

(THIS PAGE) Historic and picturesque, Hope Glen Farm exudes rustic elegance.

WHAT’S MORE BLISSFUL THAN A FRESH SPRING DAY or lazy summer evening in Minnesota? After being cooped up all winter, enjoying the kiss of warm breezes is a celebration in itself. Brides have plenty of options for taking it outdoors (and Minnesota Bride has a few special favorites). First, though, here are some general considerations as you’re planning your big day.

LOCATION

Find out if there are regulations at the location you want. A local park, for instance, may make a beautiful setting, but before you order a tent, tables and other necessities, check with the parks and recreation department. Some cities or counties require event permits and/or have rules on closing time, noise or serving alcohol.

Wherever you decide to hold your event, note beforehand the height and angle of the sun throughout the day. You can download a sun position app to track it so your guests won’t be squinting into the sun during the ceremony.

Also determine whether your location is marked and accessible to all your guests, whether there’s enough parking and if alternate transportation to the ceremony or reception is available.

PARTY CRASHERS

Unwanted guests also are a factor. We’re talking the flying kind: Mosquitoes and wasps flourish in spring and summer, and are busier at certain times of the day. Be prepared with insect repellent for yourself and guests, and consider having some remedies on hand in case of bites or stings. Also note whether feathered friends frequent the locale you’ve chosen, especially if it’s near a lake or pond. These guests can be noisy intruders and often leave behind messy…presents.

WEATHER

You’ll want to do everything possible to make your guests comfortable. Even the most glorious day can end with a sudden

mnbride.com MINNESOTA BRIDE 49 PHOTOS BY:
JANELLE ELISE PHOTOGRAPHY.
HOPE GLEN FARM

thunderstorm, so make sure you have a place to shelter in case Mother Nature has plans of her own.

Keep temperature in mind. In the heat of summer, a shady place to escape is a must. Note whether the venue has outdoor spaces to provide cover for guests, like a large pavilion, or places where you could set up a canopy or tent. Have water available for your guests, too. If the evenings tend to be cool, a bonfire where guests can gather is a cozy option.

RESTROOM ACCOMMODATIONS

If your chosen spot doesn’t include existing restroom facilities, don’t despair: You can rent luxury restroom trailers, which are allowed on most properties (check with the venue to be sure, though). Amenities can include private stalls with flush toilets, heating and air conditioning, and hot and cold running water, as well as lighting and mirrors. Even if you choose a more modest option, you can customize the signage, offer scented hand sanitizer and wipes, and provide a waiting area with seating and a floral installation.

LIGHTING

Dancing in the moonlight sounds lovely, but safety comes first. Rent outdoor lights or hire a company to hang them to enhance the setting and to make sure guests can see where they’re going. Strings of Edison bulbs are a gorgeous way to add ambience to your reception space; batteryoperated lanterns look beautiful hanging over the dance floor. If you plan to hang mason jars or tea lights from trees, always opt for battery-operated lights to avoid fire hazards.

(ABOVE) GRADDY PHOTOGRAPY, (BELOW) CARINA PHOTOGRAPHICS. LEOPOLDS’S MISSISSIPPI GARDENS REDEEMED FARM

FOOD AND DRINK

With the onset of COVID-19, guidelines on food and drink service have seen constant change. If you’re planning to serve refreshments, check for safety advisories from the local government. Plan accordingly, depending on your location and the available food preparation facilities. Will there be refrigeration or will you rely on coolers? Will you have access to ice for drinks as well as for your coolers? Will you have cake or desserts that can withstand warm temperatures?

What kind of utensils and dishware will you require? This is a situation where a wedding planner or catering company can be especially helpful navigating the best options for your wedding.

CHOOSING YOUR SPACE

Minnesota boasts an almost unlimited number of gorgeous outdoor spaces where you can say your “I do’s,” whatever the size of your event. Options range from rustic barns on historic

farms to pristine formal gardens to your own back yard. Here are a few we especially like for this spring and summer.

GARDENS

Imagine walking down a path surrounded by a glorious landscaped display of flowers and greenery; perhaps you’re accompanied by the music of a trickling waterfall or the heavenly scent of roses and peonies. A garden wedding can offer the most delightful combination of

mnbride.com MINNESOTA BRIDE 51

sights, smells and sounds of the outdoors. In natureloving Minnesota, venues range from elegant rose gardens to natural spaces featuring ornamental grasses and towering oaks and maples. Some gardens bring the outside in, in the form of a conservatory or greenhouse.

WE SUGGEST: Minnesota Landscape Arboretum | Como Park Zoo and Conservatory | Leopold’s Mississippi Gardens | Lyndale Park Rose Garden | Duluth Rose Garden

TENTS

Make any location your own by setting up a tent and decorating it to express your personality as a couple. From a simple canopy to shield guests from the sun to a grand structure that offers air conditioning, dining, dancing and kitchen facilities, tents are available to rent in all sizes and with an array of amenities. Many tent rental companies also have other rental pieces— tables, chairs, linens and lounge furniture—to create relaxed, intimate spaces for the couple, their attendants and the guests.

WE SUGGEST: Ultimate Events | Après Event Décor and Tent Rental | Minnesota Party and Tent Rental | Broadway Party & Tent Rental

BARNS

Barns just might be the perfect balance of indoors and outdoors. Often surrounded by picturesque fields and forests (get ready, Instagram!), a barn can serve as home base for your wedding, providing a place to primp before the ceremony as well as serve as a reception site, dining area and dance floor. While some barns show evidence of their age and former four-legged residents, others are newly built to function solely as event centers. Almost all have that boho, rustic vibe that outdoor enthusiasts especially prefer.

WE SUGGEST: Hope Glen Farm | Historic Furber Farm | The Cottage Farmhouse | Redeemed Farm | Rolling Ridge | Sacred Clay Weddings | Camrose Hill Flower Farm | Ashery Lane Farm *

TYPE & TIMBER

Capturing emotion—the raw, unfiltered moments that define you as a couple and show you as your best self—that’s the goal. In the in-between moments—the ones that happen after a posed smile, when you’re goofing around with your other half, forgetting a picture is being taken. And in capitalizing on natural surroundings, utilizing the bold and industrial and natural to explore the balance between a little bit wild and a little bit tame. Because at the end of the day, it’s about capturing the memories and remembering the details—one picture at a time.

LOVE CONQUERS ALL Whitney &

Sam

WEDDING: August 1, 2020

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: Royal Golf Club, Lake Elmo

HONEYMOON: Hewing Hotel, Minneapolis; Maui (planned)

Lindsay Miller Photography

Whitney Hernlem and Sam Schoeberl’s relationship stood the test of time—as well as the tests they faced as they planned their wedding during the COVID-19 pandemic. The couple met in high school in Hastings and had been dating for seven years when Sam proposed at sunset on a balcony overlooking the ocean in Clearwater, Florida. Their wedding day turned out perfect, Whitney says, but the lead-up was not without setbacks and difficult decisions. “I think we made at least 20 different versions of that day in the months leading up to it,” Whitney says. Their smaller wedding allowed the couple time to talk with all their guests. Their Lutheran ceremony incorporated a “unity hibiscus”

that the couple planted together in honor of their delayed honeymoon to Hawaii. Neutral tones of taupe, black and white formed the base palette, with flowers providing color. A mix of vintage candlesticks, glasses and vases graced the guest tables, while Sam and Whitney sat at a sweetheart table during the reception. To avoid contact, guests grazed on individual charcuterie boxes before dinner, then had cupcakes instead of the typical and wedding cake. Whitney says one of their favorite moments was their first dance, to the Dixieland jazz-style “La Vie en Rose,” played by The Riverside Hitmen. “The band included a three-piece horn section that made our first dance one to remember.”

Leslie & Kevin

TEXT: Kristin Snyder WEDDING: June 6, 2020

CEREMONY: PAIKKA, St. Paul RECEPTION: Home of the couple

HONEYMOON: New Zealand (planned)

Despite some twists and turns, and an ocean separating them, Leslie Byun and Kevin Huang found their way back to each other, only to have their wedding derailed—briefly—by COVID-19. The two met in 2014 and there was definitely a spark, but a year later, Leslie moved to Sweden to teach at an international school. When she moved back to Minnesota three years later, the two reconnected, rekindling feelings from years before. In 2019, a 6½-mile trek on the Superior Hiking Trail led to a viewpoint overlooking Bean and Bear Lakes—and a proposal. The pandemic initially put their original plans for a March wedding on hold, but the couple only postponed their vows for a few months. They found PAIKKA’s small wedding package through

Instagram, and instantly fell in love with the venue’s simple, industrial aesthetic. With only their immediate families, pastor and photographer present, Leslie and Kevin embraced the laid-back atmosphere. Leslie added a fun hat at the last moment; dried florals and grasses made up her bouquet and Kevin’s boutonniere, adding more texture to the backdrop of live plants and modern architecture. A sweet personal moment—Leslie and Kevin each reading letters to their parents—moved Leslie to tears. Not wanting to miss out, a few friends planned a small reception—a highly anticipated event, after everyone had been separated during the lockdown. Though they plan to have a bigger celebration post-COVID, their new life is off to a meaningful start.

Anna & Abel

TEXT: Sherri Hildebrandt WEDDING: January 25, 2020

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: Hewing Hotel, Minneapolis HONEYMOON: Florida Keys

First impressions are important, as Anna Ahart and Abel Sessofia can attest. The two matched on Tinder and had exchanged messages, but hadn’t met up. Then one night when they were each out at a bar with friends, Abel recognized Anna from her pictures, introduced himself, and the two went on their first date the next week. Two years later, they bought a house together, and before they moved in, Abel surprised Anna with a proposal there, amid rose petals and candles. Having their wedding at the Hewing was an easy decision: The couple had regularly enjoyed stopping for a nightcap after a night out, and they wanted a cozy place where everyone could gather and avoid January weather. Their most memorable moment was the first look on the rooftop of

the Hewing, with the Minneapolis skyline behind them. “There was so much anticipation and excitement leading up to that moment,” Anna remembers, “that we felt like after that we could relax a little.” The day was full of fun, from getting ready with friends to the ceremony to photos with family and the bridal party, followed by “cocktail reception, dinner, and lots and lots of dancing and drinks!” Anna says. Instead of a photo booth, the couple hired an illustrator, so everyone got to take home a sketch of themselves. “Abel’s family is from Africa, so we had guests from all over the world. It was such a melting pot of people from different backgrounds and cultures, and it was beautiful to see everyone come together and celebrate our marriage!”

FORMULA FOR LOVE

Rachel & Evan

TEXT: Sherri Hildebrandt WEDDING: August 8, 2020

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: Creekside Farm, Rush City

HONEYMOON: Jamaica

For Rachel Dvorak and Evan Hesse, it was all about chemistry—literally. The two met during their sophomore year in chemistry class at Augsburg University. After three years of dating, the couple’s love of travel took them to Colombia in 2018, where they made friends with an Irish woman who—unbeknownst to Rachel—played a role in Evan’s proposal. When they visited her in Dublin, she took them to some of her favorite spots. “We were climbing around a waterfall, and the next thing I know, Evan was proposing!” says Rachel. Because of the pandemic, some of the guests—

as well as the photographer and the best man—couldn’t attend. But the photographer found replacements and the best man made a video for the reception that “turned out to be more emotional than anyone expected, and it’s something we’ll always remember.” The couple kept their colors on the neutral side because the venue itself was so lovely. There were so many special moments, Rachel says, that it was hard to process them all until the next day. “I’m thankful that Evan and I took time to sit on the balcony during the reception and watch everything that was happening below us.”

TAKING A CHANCE ON ROMANCE

Shannon & Brian

TEXT: Sherri Hildebrandt WEDDING: March 14, 2020

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: Machine Shop, Minneapolis HONEYMOON: Belize (planned)

Shannon Tomfohrde was about to give up on online dating and told herself that Brian Zou would be the last person from eHarmony she’d date. Meanwhile, Shannon was the first woman Brian messaged after joining the service—and he didn’t have to look further. After two years of dating, the couple was visiting Shannon’s family in Wisconsin and took dogs Nika, Bowie and Millie for a walk. “The dogs were incredibly misbehaved,” Shannon says, “and just as we were about to give up and go back, they decided to cooperate.” They all sat down—and even kept

quiet when Brian proposed and Shannon joyfully answered “Yes!” Though many guests had to cancel, Shannon’s grandparents made sure they were there—celebrating their 68th wedding anniversary; they even did a “first dance” after Shannon and Brian’s turn on the floor, since they hadn’t had one at their own wedding. The couple kept their décor simple and neutral, with plenty of fresh greenery; for centerpieces, each table had a cake on a unique cake stand. As the evening wound down, the couple stole away to a quiet spot overlooking the Mississippi to share a special moment.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS McCall & Brady

TEXT: Kristin Snyder WEDDING: September 21, 2020

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: RiverHaven Events Center, Moorhead

HONEYMOON: Spain and Italy (planned)

McCall Goehner was getting a little impatient with Brady Goeson, her boyfriend of more than three years. After all, they already had a house and a dog together. And though Brady had a plan—to propose on a downtown rooftop venue in Fargo—it didn’t feel right. Back home that evening, while preparing dinner, McCall wasn’t sure why Brady insisted she grab their dog Bruin’s favorite stuffed toy—until she discovered Brady had hidden a ring in it. “It was sweet, simple and sentimental,” McCall says. Bruin played a role in their special day, too, when they

took a break during the cocktail hour to snap photos with their furry friend. Keeping things simple and close to home was important, McCall says, so holding everything at the event center made everything easy. For her florals, she chose wildflowers with a simple palette of greens, whites, mustard and a pop of blue. They incorporated some personal touches, such as their cake, created by a high school classmate, and, in a sign of the times, individual face masks for the guests that McCall had personalized with the newlyweds’ initials and wedding date.

THE HEART OVERFLOWS

Kaila & Blayne

TEXT: Sherri Hildebrandt WEDDING: November 9, 2019

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: The Grand 1858 at Minneapolis Event Center

HONEYMOON: Maui

Kaila Urick and Blayne Dulian’s love story began on the University of Minnesota track and field and cross country teams, just up the road from where they said their “I do’s.” The two had been dating five years when they were on vacation near San Diego; they had just arrived at the beach when Blayne dropped to one knee and proposed. “We knew we wanted to capture the simple beauty of a Minnesota fall with a touch of modern elegance,” Kaila says, so the Grand 1858 was the perfect venue; the couple had been on early dates nearby and had run many miles together

along the Mississippi, and the riverfront location perfectly captured the autumn magic. Deep greens in the bouquets and ceremony backdrop accented the classic fall palette of rust and cream. Elements of pure fun included a doughnut wall behind the dessert station, and illustrations of cat Oliver and dog Ziggy graced the beverage menu. “It’s hard to pick a single favorite moment because the entire day was perfect,” Kaila says, “but walking down the aisle and seeing my husband surrounded by our bridal party and family and friends made my heart overflow.”

LOVE AT THE LAKE

Hayley & Justin

August 2, 2020

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: Edgewild Resort, Fifty Lakes

HONEYMOON: Edgewild Resort; Australia and New Zealand (planned)

PHOTOGRAPHY

Hayley Bodin might want to thank the ducks for her engagement ring. She and Justin Lunde had been together almost eight years—since high school in Red Wing—and she told him he had to get her a ring before he could get a new boat for duck hunting. Hayley, a wedding photographer, was hurrying to leave one Saturday for a photo shoot when she found Justin on one knee at the bottom of the steps, ring in hand—and when she got home that evening, a new boat in the garage. (Turns out he had planned something more romantic, but it had been raining for a week, and he couldn’t wait any longer.) Their small ceremony and reception combined many of the things they love. After a morning of fishing and wedding

preparations, they spent a relaxed day at Edgewild Resort, where Hayley’s family has vacationed for more than 50 years. Her aunt officiated at the lakeside ceremony, which was followed by a bridal party pontoon outing. The couple’s romantic, woodland-themed wedding and reception employed colors to complement the surroundings: deep red and blush-toned flowers interspersed with pine boughs in the bouquets, tables decorated with pine cones and brass and crystal candlesticks. “I won’t ever forget doing our first dance on the dock and looking up and seeing the lights and the special place and everyone watching us,” Hayley says. “We were really able to enjoy our day and spend it with the most important people in our lives.”

BUILDING ON LOVE

Kimberly & Kene

TEXT: Sherri Hildebrandt WEDDING: August 31, 2019

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: Landmark Center, St. Paul HONEYMOON: Tucson, Arizona

PHOTOGRAPHY

Mariah Joy Photography

A chance meeting on Facebook through a mutual friend was the start of a romance that took Kimberly Evuleocha and Kenechukwu Onwuzurumba around the world. After a year of dating, Kimberly joined Kene in Finland for his brother’s wedding, where they agreed they’d meet the following week in Los Angeles to celebrate Kim’s birthday. Since they both love the architectural beauty of cathedrals, Kene told Kimberly to pick one out for them to visit on their trip. A morning of fun at Venice Beach flowed into an afternoon visit to St. Vincent de Paul Church. When she went into the church, Kim was surprised to see one of her best friends—then she turned to find Kene on one knee. “The fact that he incorporated so many of the things I love into the trip was super-sweet,”

Kimberly says. “Not to mention he flew halfway around the world to propose!” Their appreciation for classic architecture drew the couple to the Landmark Center for their venue. They wanted the architecture to stand out, so décor was minimal, with a palette of dark green, white and gold and cascades of white and green floral arrangements. “The best part of the wedding was our entrance dance and our first dance. It stands out because in those moments the crowd and guests disappeared and it was just the two of us.” But that was only the start. “In our Nigerian culture, dance is often involved in most of what we do,” Kimberly recounts. “However, along with the dancing, the guests ‘shower’ the bride and groom with money while dancing, and it serves as a send-off gift.”

HONEYMOON: Bayfield, Wisconsin

The dramatic beauty of Lake Superior provided the inspiration and backdrop for the wedding of nature lovers Krista Humbert and Brandon Fiedler, who met at Colorado State University. Colorado was also the site of the Brandon’s proposal while the two hiked in the Poudre Canyon amid stunning fall foliage. “It was just the two of us— with only the rattlesnake sunning itself along the trail to witness our pure joy and excitement!” Krista chose emerald green, ivory and gold for her color palette, using bright dahlias, ranunculus and hydrangeas and streaming emerald green ribbons. Originally planned as a larger

wedding, Krista says they were happy to be able to celebrate safely with only eight guests—parents and siblings—taking part. Each person had a job to do: Krista’s dad officiated, Brandon’s dad performed the treeplanting ceremony, their mothers added soil and their siblings made up the wedding party. Although the day saw clouds and rain, the clouds parted after dinner and a double rainbow magically appeared. At the end of the evening, everyone sat around a campfire, enjoying sparklers and celebratory s’mores. “It was a beautiful reminder,” Krista says, “that in the midst of a global pandemic, hope and love prevail.”

Casteele & Charlie

TEXT: Kristin Snyder WEDDING: October 19, 2019

CEREMONY: Nazareth Chapel at University of Northwestern, St. Paul RECEPTION: Leopold’s Mississippi Gardens, Minneapolis HONEYMOON: Italy (planned)

Casteele Miller and Charlie Thauwald’s love story started at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire, when Charlie was visiting the hockey team. Casteele knew he wasn’t on the team and snagged an introduction, and, as she says, “The rest is history.” After five years of dating, the couple was at Spoon + Stable in Minneapolis, Casteele’s favorite restaurant, waiting for a family celebration to start, when the waiter came to their table, holding a cake with a ring on it. After Casteele gave a teary “Yes!” the couple went to a private dining room where their families were waiting to pop the champagne. On a sunny October day, a year later, guests gathered at Nazareth Chapel for the

ceremony, then relocated to Leopold’s Mississippi Gardens, where the space had been transformed with stunning florals and a champagne wall inscribed with “Best Day Ever” for a charming photo backdrop. Among special guests was the couple’s golden doodlepup, Lola. Family was integral to the event, and the couple set up a donation box for guests to contribute to the Minnesota Cancer Society in honor of relatives fighting cancer. Continuing to spread their love throughout the community, Casteele and Charlie donated their floral arrangements to Bluebirds & Blooms, which brings the flowers to patients experiencing memory loss and long-term illness.

HONEYMOON: Denali and Kenai Fjords National Parks, Alaska (planned)

Kaitlin Kimmel and Robert Hass bonded over their shared love for the outdoors – so a mid-hike proposal on the Superior Hiking Trail was perfect. Natural elements also made their way into their January wedding. As a snowstorm raged, they tied the knot inside the cozy Van Dusen Mansion in Minneapolis. Kaitlin wore an ethereal light gray gown complete with floral embellishments on the bodice, complementing her bouquet of lush greenery. Their loved ones were essential to making

the day special, as they replaced a traditional wedding party with their parents, siblings and nephews; one of their close friends officiated. The newlyweds fondly recall embracing a quiet, intimate moment to appreciate being together after they had exchanged vows and signed the marriage license. Having always spent Saturday mornings eating doughnuts, Kaitlin and Robert replaced the traditional cake with this breakfast dessert for one more personal touch.

WALTZ TO REMEMBER

Sydney & Ian

December 28, 2019

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: Ashery Lane Farms, Mayer

HONEYMOON: St. Lucia

PHOTOGRAPHY

Vick Photography

In eighth grade, Ian Eliason taught Sydney Kamp how to make paper airplanes. The duo then dated in high school but parted ways in college. They got back together a few years later, and while on a trip to Portugal, Ian proposed to Sydney on a balcony overlooking the mountains and valleys of Duoro Valley. Reminiscent of their days in junior high, guests threw paper airplanes inscribed with well wishes as the newlyweds made their way down the aisle. Full of personality and charm, Sydney and Ian’s wedding brought warmth to a snowy day. Snug inside Ashery Lane Farms, Sydney shared a private moment with her mom, who helped Sydney into her flowing gown.

The bride carried a lush bouquet of white roses and bay leaves—a nod to her profession as a chef—that matched the garland set above the grand fireplace—all of which harkened back to the white blossoms Ian used to give her in high school. As a chef, Sydney gave special attention to dinner, with personalized menus with color-coded seals and wine pairings; one wine came from the Portuguese winery the couple visited the day after they got engaged. After dinner, the couple tripped the light fantastic with a first dance to the Piano Guys’ “Pictures at an Exhibition”—a waltz they had learned in their high school Latin- ballroom class.

HONEYMOON: To be determined

PHOTOGRAPHY

Lucas Botz Photography

After countless after-work walks around Boom Island in Minneapolis, Albert Maruggi made one walk more memorable with a shiny ring for Nicole Brinza and a new story for both to cherish. On a sunny summer day, the chandeliers at the Earl and Wilson Event Center glowed as the bride walked down the aisle in a form-fitting gown with a stunning embellished back. Nicole met her groom in front of a geometric arbor adorned with greenery and mauve florals built by Albert’s father, and his sister officiated. The

couple added a personal touch, swapping the traditional cake for cookie ice cream sandwiches, and instead of the champagne toast they had limoncello as a nod to their favorite vacation in Italy. Guests danced the night away after Nicole’s 18-month-old niece started the party by showing off her moves on the dancefloor, and the group bonded over Elton John and Blink-182. As they ended the night eating pizza in their hotel, Nicole and Albert had time to savor the new memories they had just added to their story.

WINTER WONDERLAND

Abby & Connor

TEXT: Megan White

WEDDING : January 17, 2020

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: Kellerman’s Event Center, White Bear Lake

HONEYMOON: To be determined

PHOTOGRAPHY

Type & Timber

Abby Hansmeier and Conner Mullaney’s love story started with a semi-blind date to go bowling. Abby knew that she was going to meet him, but Connor had no idea that a Tuesday evening at the bowling alley with friends would lead him to Abby. After a fall pumpkin patch proposal, the duo tied the knot on their eighth anniversary of dating on a fairytale-worthy winter day. A snowstorm on the big day turned their photos into

dreamscapes and made their celebration at Kellerman’s Event Center even cozier. Family members were a special part of the ceremony, with Abby’s dad as the officiant and the couple’s two daughters as flower girls. A family friend provided unique floral centerpieces that complemented the venue’s industrial vibe. The day seemed to fly by, Abby says, but taking photos in the snow with her new husband is a memory she’ll cherish forever.

Sydney & Tony

TEXT: Megan White WEDDING: July 18, 2020

CEREMONY: St. Christopher’s Catholic Church, Nisswa

RECEPTION: Blacksmith Main at the Northern Pacific Event Center, Brainerd HONEYMOON: Riviera Maya, Mexico

PHOTOGRAPHY

Janine Litzau Photography

Sydney Dotty and Tony Umland met one evening when a mutual friend invited her to hang out at Tony's cabin, where they bonded over games and music. In 2019, after planning it for weeks, Tony led Sydney off a trail at Elm Creek Park Reserve in Maple Grove. Awaiting them, he had a romantic picnic with champagne and flowers—the perfect setting to pop the question. For their big day, they had their ceremony at St. Christopher’s Catholic Church because faith is an important

part of their lives. Then they took the party over to Blacksmith Main to fulfill their dreams of vintage elegance. With a theme of navy, olive and pops of pink, Blacksmith Main was transformed with dusty rose blooms, for a vision that exceeded their expectations. In lieu of a traditional cake, they opted for macarons so that guests could easily grab the hand-held snack whenever they wanted. To top off the evening was a late-night snack of walking tacos, which guests raved about. *

The Countdown Begins

FIRST THINGS FIRST :

Tell friends and family. Set the date.

Choose the type of wedding you want (formal, semi-formal, informal; which season). Set a wedding budget and decide who will be able to contribute and how much. Visit, choose and book your ceremony and reception sites.

Pick a photographer/videographer. Have engagement photos taken. Start shopping for your gown. Start working on your guest list. Arrange for both sets of parents to get together.

9 TO 12 MONTHS BEFORE:

Sign up for any pre-marital counseling or classes.

Announce your engagement in local newspapers, if desired.

Choose your wedding party members. Arrange the first meeting with your minister, priest, rabbi or officiant and wedding planner (if using one).

Throw an engagement party.

Gather wedding inspiration. Start a Pinterest board. Search magazines and websites for ideas. Begin adding the names of vendors and their contact information into a master contact list.

6 TO 9 MONTHS BEFORE:

Select a caterer.

Choose a baker, schedule cake tastings. Order your gown and schedule fittings (remember to bring your shoes). Shop for bridesmaid dresses. Hire a florist. Book a band/DJ.

Start researching honeymoon spots. Finalize the guest list. Book a stationer (and calligrapher, if using one).

Mail save-the-date cards. Purchase your shoes, headpiece, jewelry and lingerie for the big day.

CHECKLIST
It’s never too early to start planning. Follow these steps and you’ll be well on your way to matrimonial bliss.

Book hair and makeup artists for the big day. Reserve event necessities. Book portable toilets for outdoor events, extra chairs, linens, lighting and so on. Start making a day-of timeline, determining what should happen when (speeches, first dance, etc).

Book a block of hotel rooms near the reception site for out-of-town guests. Register for gifts at two to three places. Start to keep track of favorite songs.

4

TO 6 MONTHS BEFORE:

Order all wedding stationery (invitations, envelopes, thank-you notes) and work out pricing for programs, menus and place cards, which will be printed closer to the date. Hire wedding-day transportation. Book flights and hotel reservations for your honeymoon.

Arrange the rehearsal dinner. Schedule any beauty treatments (brow-waxing, facials, teeth-whitening) that you’d like to have done before the wedding. Send a guest list to the host of your bridal shower.

Order passport, if necessary. Purchase wedding rings; order engraving. Remind mother and mother-in-law to start shopping for their dresses.

2 TO 4 MONTHS BEFORE:

Order the suits for the groom and groomsmen. Meet with the caterer or facility manager to discuss menus, wine selections, serving style, etc. Choose and order wedding favors and welcome baskets, if desired.

Order the wedding cake.

Meet with your officiant to discuss your ceremony; invite loved ones to perform readings, if appropriate.

Choose songs for the ceremony and reception. Buy thank-you gifts for your attendants. Confirm group hotel rates for out-of-town guests.

Book your pre-wedding and wedding-night hotel.

Finalize your honeymoon plans. Send invitations to the calligrapher if you’re using one.

Plan your bachelorette party with your attendants.

Send a day-of timeline to your vendors so they’ll have ample time for tweaks and feedback.

Sign up for dance lessons, if desired.

1 TO 2 MONTHS BEFORE:

Mail invitations. Do a hair and makeup run-through (with headpiece).

Meet with the caterer to finalize a menu. Send programs, menus and escort cards to the stationer to be printed (if not using a calligrapher).

Send your wedding announcement to local newspapers, if desired. Write thank-you notes as you receive gifts. Maintain a list of all presents received and thank-yous written.

2 TO 4 WEEKS BEFORE:

Plot the seating for the reception. Confirm times with all vendors. Have your final dress fitting. Write your rehearsal dinner toast. Compose your vows, if desired. Visit the salon for one last cut and color. Send escort cards and the seating chart to your calligrapher to fill in guests’ names and table numbers.

Enter RSVPs into a guest-list database, and call invitees who haven’t yet responded. Get your marriage license. If you’re changing your name, order several extra copies. If changing your name, make arrangements with Social Security, Department of Motor Vehicles, credit card companies and your bank. Mail the rehearsal dinner invitations, if applicable.

Stock the bar using your final head count as a guide. Send out as many final vendor payments as you can.

Provide addresses for drivers of transport vehicles.

Create a must-take “shot list” and discuss it with your photographer.

1 WEEK BEFORE:

Compile the fees that will be due on the wedding day.

Give the caterer a final head count. Appoint a reliable pal to transport the cake knife, toasting glasses, etc. to and from the reception site.

Get final beauty treatments (facial, waxing, brow-shaping, etc.).

Pack for the honeymoon. Ask someone to bring your luggage to the reception if you’re leaving from there.

Give your honeymoon itinerary to a friend or family member in case of emergency. Pick up your dress or make arrangements for it to be fetched or delivered.

Arrange for the cake to be delivered to the reception venue.

Buy a guest book, if you choose to use one. Delegate small wedding-day tasks: someone to carry your things; someone to bustle your dress; someone to manage the gifts; someone to hand out tips; and so on.

Send a timeline to the bridal party, including every member’s contact information. Break in your shoes.

Assemble and distribute welcome baskets to out-of-town guests, if desired. Pick up wedding rings, check engravings and sizes.

Remind men to pick up formalwear and shoes, and check them for fit.

If you don’t have a personal attendant, ask a friend to help you get dressed on the big day. Talk to head usher about any special seating arrangements.

Arrange for a light snack for the wedding party to eat while getting ready for the ceremony.

LAST 24 HOURS :

Help decorate the venue, if necessary. Have a manicure, pedicure and any other last-minute pampering treatments.

Distribute thank-you gifts to the wedding party, special attendants and parents. Organize for a note or gift to be delivered to your fiancé on the wedding day.

Take a relaxing bath, go to bed early and start getting excited. You’re about to get married! *
