“Paige’s entire attitude around us buying our forever home was completely in line with us getting married. Paige absolutely kept our hopes and dreams very high even when we were worried things weren’t working out as we wanted them to. Paige not only cheered us on through the house buying process, she continuously reaches out & checks in with how we are settling in in our neighborhood & loves to hear any and all wedding plans!”

After you say yes to the dress, let me help you say yes to your new home! I understand life is full of change & I love supporting my clients through it all. If you are looking to buy or sell a home - please reach out.

“We cannot thank Paige enough for helping us stay sane during this process….she was genuinely interested in helping us decide what was best for us, not just trying to gain another client or sell another home. Being able to lean on Paige for home advice during this time was a great outlet to get my mind off those long days/nights of wedding planning.”

Dare to Be Different

WE ARE ENTERING A BOLD NEW ERA of wedding style, and we’re so happy you’re joining us for the adventure, dear reader! Norms are being redefined, rules are being broken, traditions are being rewritten, and we’re here for it.

While this issue has so many moments to be inspired by, I have a few personal favorites. Take our first cover photo, with the Monique Lhuillier "Amalia" top and "Alice" skirt from anna bé. This eye-catching combo — just one of many — was part of an incredible photo shoot (“The Good Life,” page 80) that focused on fashion-forward styles. And, not only did this shoot feature some of our state's most beloved bridal shops, I'm excited to share that it also showcased the work of two of Minnesota's own designers, Tara LaTour and Kathryn Rogers of House of KLynn.

In this issue, you’ll also find an array of tips, tricks and products to help you feel your best; sumptuous spreads of celebrations that encourage the incorporation of cultural traditions; and astounding local weddings with the trendy and out-of-the-box ideas you’ve been craving. Take a look, see what you like, and make it your own. It’s OK to be daringly different!

Finally, I’d also like to congratulate Sonja Babich, who recently made the leap from publisher to the new owner of Minnesota Bride and our five sister publications. She has an unrivaled passion for all things wedding, and I couldn’t imagine anyone better to take the helm here – not to mention making us a woman-owned company!

Cheers to all that is bold, new and exciting!

WEDDING GUESTS ARE NOT THE ONLY ONES who know how to have a good time. Some of Minnesota’s favorite wedding vendors had a blast mixing and mingling at Minnesota Bride’s 2022 Spring Social. Guests were thrilled to get together, catch up, have a drink and listen to the sounds of singer Kat Perkins. A huge thank you to Northern Stacks for hosting this marvelous event. An additional shout-out to the sponsors who made this night possible: Michelle Dunlap, Lasting Impressions Weddings, Sadie’s Couture Floral, PHOS, Alpha-Lit Twin Cities, United States Axe, Rustic Charm Rentals, D’Amico Catering, Summit Hill Studios, Après Event Décor & Tent Rental, Traveling Photo Booth and Kat Perkins

1. Every last detail was primped to perfection by the event’s planner, Sarah Trotter of Lasting Impressions

2. Northern Stacks’ generous event space provided the backdrop for the design team to create a festive atmosphere.

3. Minnesota’s own Kat Perkins’ bubbly personality charmed the audience as she provided the night’s entertainment.

4. The luxe outdoor picnic settings by Rustic Charm Rental kept guests comfortable in style.

5. The team from Minnesota Bride, Janet McLaughlin, Bri Francis, Sonja Babich, Brittany O'Neill, Katie Ringhand and Megan White, couldn’t stop smiling.

6. The pink and orange centerpieces from Sadie’s Couture Floral provided a springy flair everywhere you looked.

7. Hair and makeup artist Michelle Dunlap and her husband, Dave, were axe-tremely excited to try their hand at some axe-throwing from United States Axe.

8. The MN BRIDE sign by Alpha-Lit Twin Cities was a standout focal point at an already eye-catching event.

9. Among those enjoying the festivities were Andrew Vick of Vick Photography, Jessica Mae and Samuel Koza from WarPaint International Beauty

10. Sparkling disco balls from PHOS added a cheerful layer to the space’s whimsical decorations.

11. Vendors and planners had fun posing for the camera in the Traveling Photo Booth

12. The dainty and scrumptious desserts by D’Amico Catering were thoroughly enjoyed by all. *

FIRE & ICE

TAKE VIBRANT, WARM COLORS and combine with gleaming cool hues and you might just get steam. Jenna Culley Events used such sharp contrasts and achieved a dramatic result.

1. VERY BERRY

Mori & Co’s invitation suite in deep blueberry blue and raspberry red sets the tone for a bold event. Clean, simple typography in embossed gold adds a metallic flair, while response cards and postage stamps employ natural, botanical images. It’s all tucked in a dark-as-night envelope.

2. FROST YOURSELF

Warm gold wraps around the icy sparkle of diamonds in these unique pieces from Helzberg Diamonds. Jenny Packham’s Isolde yellow labgrown diamond engagement ring in 18k yellow gold (1 ½ ct. tw.), inspired by Jenny’s effervescent Isolde gown, pairs with her lab-grown diamond wedding band in 18k yellow gold (3/8 ct. tw) and his 1/10 ct. tw. diamond band in 10k yellow gold.

3. ARCTIC INSPIRATION

Distinctly glacial in appearance, this three-tiered beauty from Emily Grace Cakes is frosted in the blue of pure glacier ice and has hints of “earth” around the edges — just like the real thing. The textured sides have a wind-weathered look, and sculptedsugar details add to the cake’s icy “landscape.”

4. DESIRE FOR FIRE

A deep, red, smoke-shrouded cocktail from D’Amico Catering is sure to warm the hearts of your guests. Perfect for a cold winter’s day.

5. ELEGANCE ON ICE

A dollop of caviar served on ice is the star of this show. In keeping with the sophisticated delicacy, Linen Effects has prepared the perfect place setting with a frosted white charger and clear plate with fluted edges atop a shimmering bronze table runner. Gleaming gold cutlery and smoky bronze goblets complete the setting, with a gold-dipped sprig of dill as a piquant accent.

6. BEAUTY BURNING BRIGHT

This fiery arrangement by Petals and Beans almost screams “passion” with its bursts of deep reds, sensuous pinks and regal purples. Twists of greenery wind through the bouquet that is tamed with a romantic, hand-tied blue ribbon.

DRESS SHOPS

First Black-Owned Bridal Boutique in Minnesota

Before opening the first Black-owned bridal boutique in Minnesota in May, Lorraine Love spent eight years as a hair and makeup artist and two years as a wedding planner. She was inspired to open LaNoire Bridal after dress shopping for her siblings’ weddings, and she hopes to eventually sell more than just dresses. Some of Love’s goals for La Noire Bridal are to become a “one-stop shop” that sells menswear as well as gowns for women from different cultures to be custom-made by local designers or sourced from around the world.

You can expect to be treated with the utmost care when you shop at La Noire Bridal. After scheduling your appointment,

you will complete a questionnaire to give the stylists a sense of your unique style. Upon entering the store, brides will receive a complimentary 90-minute appointment (which can be upgraded), a bridal stylist, and light refreshments including champagne. Be sure to bring your entourage!

Currently, this boutique offers designers including but not limited to Dovita, Chic Nostalgia, Pantora, and La Premiere in sizes 2 to 36. They also carry veils, hair accessories, belts, jackets, hats and bridal jewelry.

LaNoire Bridal is passionate about staying engaged with brides. They host monthly events and trunk shows, and

the shop can also be turned into an event space. Brides can book the location for private dress fittings with up to 15 guests, or it can be booked as a micro wedding or bridal shower venue.

An appointment at La Noire Bridal will be unlike any other. While searching for your gown, you will be bathed in natural light while gazing into gorgeous French mirrors that inspired the boutique’s royal aesthetic. The St. Paul shop, located in the heart of Lowertown in the Pioneer Endicott building, was the original home of the Pioneer Press and is just upstairs from the Minnesota Museum of American Art. Luxurious Lodging

If you want the hottest luxury hotel and venue for your upscale wedding, look no further than the new Four Seasons hotel in Minneapolis. Located at the corner of Hennepin Avenue and South Washington Avenue, the Four Seasons hotel has gorgeous visual aesthetics to impress your guests and set the scene for your stunning event.

The building architecture, the hotel interiors, and the guest rooms were designed by Smallwood, an Atlantabased international design firm.

“All of these spaces were designed so thoughtfully, reflecting the beauty of Minnesota landscapes and the Twin Cities’ continued commitment to industry and innovation,” says Jessica Tober, the wedding and events manager for the hotel. “Plus, the artwork you see highlights an abundance of local talent.”

The hotel offers many options for venues. The largest indoor venue, the Mill City Ballroom, is roughly 6,500 square feet to hold a maximum of 700 occupants. If you are opting for a smaller wedding, you may prefer the smallest indoor venue, the Celebration Suite, which is about 420 square feet. There are plenty of venue options in between, among them the Riva Plaza, an outdoor venue that can hold up to 350 occupants.

Beyond the beautiful venues, the hotel also offers impressive indoor and outdoor pools, spa treatments, and a 24-hour fitness center.

Hotel personnel can suggest a variety of vendors to accommodate your wedding needs. The staff will share ideas and is also open to working with outside vendors if preferred. For the most part, food and drinks are provided by their expert culinary team.

For your guests, there are 222 spacious hotel rooms with options to connect to additional rooms, wellstocked private bars, 24-hour in-room dining and luxury amenities like twice-daily housekeeping. Tober also cited the wonderful city views that guests will enjoy upon their stay: “With guest floors ranging from the twenty-third to thirtieth floors, everyone who stays with us enjoys unobstructed views of the city or Mississippi River.”

For other logistical concerns like parking, your wedding event manager would be happy to review options for the couple and the guests. There is also valet parking available. Minneapolis, fourseasons.com/ minneapolis/

AWARDS

Radisson Blu MOA Wins Three Stella Awards

The Radisson Blu hotel at the Mall of America in Bloomington has received multiple Stella Awards recognizing its staff, design and sustainability efforts. The Stella Awards are given to hotels, convention centers, airlines, and other service providers that offer quality service to events professionals.

“We’re honored to receive Stella Awards recognizing both our event staff and our hotel’s décor/design to provide validation for what we’ve known all along — that we’re fortunate to have this talented team and gorgeous venue,” says Alex Francis, the general manager of the hotel.

Your wedding at the Radisson Blu Mall of America will be overseen with care. “Our events team works tirelessly to ensure that every wedding celebration we host is one

to remember, partnering with each couple to bring their unique visions to life,” Francis says. “Whether couples are looking for upscale and luxurious or whimsical and quirky, our creative events team is ready to collaborate and create the wedding — and memories — of their dreams.”

The hotel is also proud of their sustainability efforts. Says Francis: “The Radisson Blu Mall of America [is] the perfect venue for couples who are passionate about caring for our Earth and resources. From our LEED certification to our partnership with the University of Minnesota Bee Squad, to our dedication to local, sustainable food, we are committed to providing the highest quality service and events while also prioritizing responsible environmental practices.” Bloomington,

ENTERTAINMENT

AXE-CITING ENTERTAINMENT

Looking for unique entertainment to include in your wedding? Recreational axe-throwing would fit the bill. Dustin and Niki Knight started their company, United States Axe, in March 2020 at their Alexandria location. Since then, they have expanded to four locations, in addition to four mobile throwing units. They typically bring their mobile units to weddings, work team-building events, parties, fairs and breweries.

For weddings or bachelor or bachelorette parties, the Knights recommend booking a two-hour session at one of their physical locations in which you will begin with a safety brief, instructions for throwing, and one-on-one coaching in addition to guided games. At the end, participants can compete in a tournament to earn a trophy.

The owners recommend booking any of their physical locations at least a week in advance, and be aware that Saturdays are especially busy.

The process is similar for booking their mobile units, which can be easily done through their website. A mobile unit requires a flat area — grass, gravel or even a driveway will do. The mobile unit can be booked at an hourly rate, but remember that the more guests you have, the more time you should book. Dustin and Niki have traveled everywhere from North Dakota to Florida, so this unusual entertainment option is best to be booked well in advance, ideally as soon as you know your date.

United States Axe will not only provide unique, fun entertainment for you and your guests, but it will also generate remarkable photographs and help everyone loosen up and further enjoy your special day. St. Cloud, unitedstatesaxe.com

RENOVATION

GLACIAL WATERS SPA AT GRAND VIEW LODGE GETS UPDATES

Updates have been completed to provide a more relaxing experience for customers at the Glacial Waters Spa at Grand View Lodge near Nisswa.

Aesthetically, the lodge has expanded its current contemporary and modern light Northwoods look and feel into the new additions.

What can you expect during a visit to the updated spa? In addition to new treatment rooms and locker rooms, there is a new outdoor hot tub enclosed with a privacy wall. The hot tub rests beside a soothing outdoor fireplace and scenic pine trees. Guests can also enjoy a coed steam room and sauna — perfect for a couple’s spa retreat. Steam rooms help improve skin and circulation while reducing (pre-wedding!) stress.

The new Himalayan salt room offers salt therapy, which involves breathing small salt particles to calm lung and

respiratory conditions. Salt therapy can also be used as a skin treatment to keep you looking gorgeous on your big day.

The spa also has new treatments such as specialty scrubs, body wraps and hydrotherapy treatments which can improve the quality of skin and detoxify the body. Additionally, there are new retail offerings so you can enjoy your favorite spa packages from the comfort of your home. The retail area now includes products from local Minnesota vendors, in addition to the existing spa favorites.

You can book single, couples or group appointments for anyone in your wedding party. The staff is currently preparing treatments and packages to be revealed in the fall, so couples should keep updated with the website or give them a call. Nisswa, grandviewlodge.com/spa —Nicole Berglund

Vow’d Finds a Permanent Home

Vow’d, an esteemed bridal shop with designer gowns, accessories and gifts, has recently opened a new location in the North Loop — a seemingly perfect neighborhood to bring Vow’d Minneapolis to life — after previously hosting a series of bridal pop-ups.

Gowns typically range from $200 to $1,950, so brides will be sure to find something they love. Furthermore, they offer sizes 0 to 24W, with up to four in-store sample sizes to help you find the right fit.

All Vow’d gowns are brand exclusives, meaning they work with the same manufacturers as other companies but use their guests’ feedback to develop gowns you will not find anywhere else. They also carry veils, belts, jewelry and hair accessories that are frequently changing.

At Vow’d Minneapolis, brides can expect to try on fabulous dresses without the fuss. The boutique is home to friendly staff and fun decor. Brides will receive personal care while shopping and can also feel good about their purchase from Vow’d, a member of the Altar’d State “Stand Out For Good” family. Recommended product:

Rejuvenique Oil Intensive ($105) from Monat, monatglobal.com

The Rejuvenique Oil Intensive is incredibly versatile with over 100 uses! Here are my fave ways to use it:

• For hair: Use it is for weekly oil treatments. Apply to your scalp, massage in and comb through. Leave it on overnight and wash it out in the morning. The oil will balance the ph of the scalp creating the healthiest environment for hair to grow.

• For skin: Apply as your last step to your night time skincare regimen. The oil contains tons of anti-aging properties and will give you a hydrated, flawless glow.

Recommended products:

• SkinCeuticals clarifying clay mask ($60), Skinceuticals Conditioning Toner ($35) skinceuticals.com

• Sonia Roselli Beauty Water Balm Skin Prep ($52), soniaroselli.com

• Malibu C treatment ($5), malibuc.com

• Moroccan oil Intensive or Lightweight hydrating mask ($42), morroccanoil.com

Recommended skincare:

• Exfoliate – Your skin cells turn over approximately every 27 days and even less as we age. Regular weekly exfoliation helps to clear those cells away, gets rid of rough, dry patches, and allows your skin to absorb your skincare products better, I highly recommend SkinCeuticals Clarifying Clay Mask for a weekly treatment or Skinceuticals Conditioning Toner for everyday use.

• Moisturize – Sonia Roselli Beauty Water Balm is a 5-in-1 product that does it all –moisturizer, toner/serum, day cream, night cream, and makeup primer.

• More water intake – it plumps your skin and gives you an instant glow!

Recommended haircare:

• Get your hair cut 2-4 weeks before the wedding day. This will ensure your split ends are taken care of and give your hairstylist a beautiful shape to work with.

• Use a clarifying treatment, like Malibu C treatment. These easy-to-use packets can be shipped to you and get rid of any buildup on your hair. With so many options, you’re sure to find one for your hair type blondes, swimmers, hard water, or scalp therapy. Or you can see your hairstylist for a professional clarifying treatment.

• Follow up with a deep conditioning or repair mask. If you have dry hair, some at-home deep conditioning treatments are just what you need. I highly recommend the Moroccan oil Intensive or Lightweight hydrating mask . On towel-dried hair, comb through and let sit for 5-7 minutes. It’s seriously magic. However, if you have damaged hair, the only option is to cut off the damage. If you don’t, your split ends will keep traveling up your hair shaft.

• K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask ($75), k18hair.com

• Cubica 7-DAY Shampoo, ($34), 7haircare.com

Recommended care:

• Schedule a hair/makeup trial a month or two before the big day to go over what to do (and not to do) leading up to the wedding.

• Don’t use anything different the week before the wedding in case you have a sensitivity to a new product. Start new hair/skincare a few weeks prior to get the best results. This includes lash extensions – you won’t want an allergic reaction to the glue the day before your wedding.

• A vitamin C serum is great for every skin type and will give your skin a great glow. A good twice a day cleanser is also a must. Lotions vary a lot depending on skin condition but Cerave has good daily moisturizers for all skin types.

Flawless makeup comes from flawless skin!

• Make an appointment for dermaplaning the week leading up to the wedding to create a smooth canvas for your makeup.

• Face/eye masks the morning of the wedding are not recommended because they can sometimes be greasy and they don’t allow for a good foundation for makeup to set on.

• Starting a good haircare regimen a month or two before the wedding is always helpful. The day of your wedding, come to your appointment with clean, blow dried hair – the “dirty hair holds curl better” is an old wives’ tale.

Find Your Calm

AS YOUR WEDDING DAY NEARS , you’re facing a major life change — while overseeing dozens of details, making seemingly endless decisions, dropping thousands of dollars and trying to manage everyone’s expectations. It can be easy to get so overwhelmed that you feel unprepared and emotionally drained when you walk down the aisle.

Handling stress in a healthy way is just as important as other self-care practices to ensure that you’re healthy and thriving on your big day. Alongside our experts, we’re here to help guide you down a calmer path.

Kelly Smith, a Minnesota-based yoga and meditation teacher, has some solutions. Founder of Yoga for You, an online yoga and meditation studio, Smith hosts the podcast “Mindful in Minutes,” where she offers weekly guided meditations.

Smith encourages her students to listen to their bodies to create a personal meditation practice on their mindfulness journey. Her classes offer insights on how you can find joy, gratitude and calm through her practices. She personally handles stress with meditation and sound-bath fusion — a full-body, immersive listening experience that uses sound to relax and nurture the body.

When she’s busy planning her travels and events, her advice for reducing stress is to take

eight to 12 minutes between tasks to do some mindful meditation, then dial it back in to finish your tasks. Once your big day arrives, Smith’s advice is to remember why all your guests are there: not for a show, but out of love and to share your experience. It’s okay to slow down and take time to turn inward and focus on yourself, Smith says, even on your wedding day.

Internationally renowned footwear designer Marion Parke, known for her stylish yet comfortable shoes, has launched a new bridal line.

THE CEREMONY WAS PERFECT. Now, with an evening of dining, dancing and mingling awaiting, all you can really think about is … my feet are killing me!

You don’t have to sacrifice comfort for style, thanks to Minnesota-based luxury footwear designer Marion Parke. With a background as a podiatric surgeon, she’s created a new line of

innovative bridal footwear. Though the common thinking might be that a shoe is either beautiful or sensible, Parke says, “Women can be both, so why can’t our shoes be, too?”

MINNESOTA BRIDE mnbride.com 54
FOOTWEAR

“An important element of looking great is feeling great,” she says. “There are moments where a woman wants to be her fullest self. She doesn’t want to be distracted because her feet hurt”— especially on her wedding day.

“There is a lot of nuance to a shoe being comfortable,” Parke says. Her brand is unique in the marketplace because of her medical background and knowledge of the anatomy and biomechanics of the foot as well as an understanding of fashion and aesthetics.

For example, a lower heel doesn’t always equal comfort; it really depends on the construction of the shoe and the contours of the foot. While a traditional solution for more comfortable shoes is to make them wider with more padding, that’s not necessarily the best answer. More cushioning can allow the foot to slip within the shoe, “and slippage is one of the No. 1 causes of fatigue and soreness,” she explains. “Your foot can slide down and your toes can get cramped in the toe box.”

Parke’s patented insole design has been crafted to increase stability by distributing weight evenly, not concentrated on the ball of the foot. Reducing that pressure will ultimately reduce fatigue. Her insoles are also contoured and will mold to the unique shape of your foot over time. She uses a medicalgrade material originally developed for prosthetics, similar to the naturally occurring soft tissue on the bottom of the foot.

A wedding shoe can be anything from a sexy stiletto to a cute kitten heel. The Marion Parke Bridal Collection features crystal-embellished stiletto sandals, pointed-toe heels, an outdoorfriendly flat sandal, as well as a selection of strappy heels available in two heights and a variety of materials including calf, patent leather, and pearlized nappa leather in shades of ivory and white.

One of the most popular selections has been the classic pump, Parke says, and coming out later this year is a pump with sparkle, along with another height option and a pointed toe—all designed to provide comfort.

Her advice when buying any footwear is to shop later in the day when your feet tend to be larger. Then wear the shoes around the house so you can break them in.

“Our brand is focused on creating women’s footwear that is simultaneously chic and comfortable, so the bridal category is a natural next step. We want to give brides the freedom of having it all: stunning shoes that are remarkably comfortable,” says Parke. “These are the heels she can wear all night long, even on the dance floor." *

Making Moments into Memories

THE LOOK ON HIS FACE when you walk down the aisle. The smile spreading across her face as she says “I do.” The tremor in Grandpa’s voice as he proposes a toast. Those small, intimate moments can be captured forever in a video. Here, four videographers offer insights on the important role they can play.

Joshua and Lisa Flom, Flom Films: “We first recommend couples find a videographer who fits their style; the color, editing style, music, and especially how they craft and tell stories,” Joshua Flom says. “Some videographers may prefer to minimize dialogue and make more of a music video, while others may prefer a longer-form edit of eight to ten minutes.” Flom also notes that audio “is one of the most crucial elements of any wedding day. Audio is half of the viewing experience of any film. It’s what helps us convey emotion, pulls the viewer into a deeper place.” The Floms have two people working every wedding. “We’re storytellers first and foremost. To tell the best story, we need to captivate the viewer with visuals and dialogue, and a huge part of that is multiple angles and views for the viewer.”

Grace Stewart, Exist Media: Chemistry with your video team is important. “Our biggest tip in the videography vendor search is finding someone who you can connect with!” Stewart says. Growing up, she loved watching her parents’ wedding video. “I got to witness, firsthand, the love they shared long before me. Whether you’re planning to add kids to the mix, sharing your day with your family for years to come, or keeping your video private for just you and your partner, it is such a special way to relive your day.” Exist Media offers a standard three- to four-minute highlight reel of your full wedding day, but from there you can add a wide range of additional services — including drone footage, an extended edit, full ceremony.

VIDEOGRAPHY
Preserving the highlights of your wedding day on video may be one of the best decisions you’ll make.

A Wedding to Have and Behold

Michelle Kuker, Blush Film Co.: When choosing a videographer, “I always tell couples to pay attention to how they feel when they watch the work of different videographers,” Kuker says. “If you find that a film feels a bit stale, detached, or too slow or fast-paced, that filmmaking style simply may not resonate with you…. Ask yourself if that is how you want the story of your day to be told.” Kuker says the No. 1 regret she hears from married couples is not having videography on their wedding day. “Many of those words, details, and moments are lost to memory without it. When considering videography, really think hard about what you want to be able to relive from your wedding day, and know that you are investing in a keepsake that will last forever!” 2023

Dan Riggs, Summit Hill Studios: “ You (right now) might not see the significance of videography because it’s all still fresh in your mind,” Riggs says, “but future you will definitely thank current you for capturing the sights and sounds of the day to enjoy in five, 10, 20 years from now when your memories begin to fade.” Riggs also says it’s important to have a videographer who works well with your photographer. “Your photographer and videographer are both trying to get the same great shots for you, so communication and coordination between all is key.” Bottom line: “Videography is a time capsule that keeps your wedding day moments alive forever for you, your kids, grandkids, and so on.” *

Wedding Dreams Do Come True

THIS IS A LOVE STORY, AGAINST ALL ODDS.” That phrase sums up Alex and Romance Burrell’s winning entry for Minnesota Wedding Day’s wedding giveaway competition last summer. The contest was a collaboration of the best of the Twin Cities wedding industry to show that, despite COVID-related disruptions of so many wedding plans, the pandemic couldn’t cancel love.

And the “prize”? A fabulous wedding for two crazy-in-love newlyweds, the culmination of efforts by more than a dozen wedding partners, nine bridesmaids and nine groomsmen — plus the newlyweds, of course — says Brooke Lyn, founder of Pop Up Weddings MN. It all happened at the Grand 1858 at Minneapolis Event Centers on August 29, 2021.

Alex and Romance’s journey of love, shared on Instagram, was voted the favorite, and the couple couldn’t have been more delighted. Here (lightly edited) is their story, in Alex’s own words:

“This is a story that not even the greatest novelist could write. Surely only God could match two people so entirely different. Family, upbringing, race, culture, background, language, traditions, country, continent! This is a love story that no one thought could happen. This is a love story, against all odds.

“Romance, the woman who would become the love of my life, had recently escaped an abusive three-year relationship through which she received her greatest blessing, an amazing bundle of joy named Aiden. I had never been on a date. She

hated me at first. … It took a while, but through a lot of time spent time together, laughing, serving, singing, praying and studying the Bible, we became best friends.

“Our adventures included park playdates and African foods. We took multiple trips to the emergency room, we took care of two kids together for a single mother while she gave birth to her third. We stayed up all night cooking for events, we drove through snowstorms, got in one car accident and narrowly avoided another, and took countless trips to daycare and back.

“Being with Romance has been the greatest adventure of my life. I saw her graduate from college as an exchange student from the Ivory Coast with baby Aiden literally strapped to her back. Witnessing this mother sacrifice for her child made me more attracted to her. She is the strongest woman I have ever met. Through all of this, even there being over a foot of height difference, and despite many people in today’s world not believing we belong together, our love bloomed, all three of us.” *

Glorious colors are the star of this stunning ceremony installation by Sadie’s Couture Florals at Minneapolis’ Urban Daisy event center, whose minimalist aesthetic can be transformed to suit every taste. Reena Maheshwari, owner of Kahani Events & Design, created the floral lotus-motif mandala. These circular and symmetric designs are especially common in South Asia, she says, and the lotus also has deep spiritual and philosophical meaning across many Asian cultures.

WHEN YOU KNOW, YOU KNOW Hannah & Shane

TEXT: Sydney Stevens WEDDING: August 28, 2021 PHOTOGRAPHER: Studio Twelve:52

CEREMONY: Private Residence, Edina RECEPTION: The Van Dusen Mansion, Minneapolis

Hannah Aylward first saw Shane Burcaw on a YouTube documentary about the nonprofit he ran. She was impressed with his quick wit, humor and accomplishments. It also didn’t hurt that he was being interviewed by actor Rainn Wilson, who played Dwight Schrute, Hannah’s favorite character on “The Office.” She sent Shane an email to introduce herself, never dreaming she was emailing her future husband. Two months of texting and FaceTime calls soon became monthly visits. “Very quickly we fell in love,” Hannah said. Geography didn’t stall their relationship. After two years longdistance, Shane moved to Minnesota to be with Hannah. The Van Dusen Mansion’s historic charm and dark wood accents were “exactly what we

were looking for,” Hannah says, and harmonized perfectly with the blush, white and green florals. The day was full of unforgettable moments but one stood out. “Our first look was such a joyful and emotional moment that we absolutely loved,” Hannah said. They allotted three hours before guests arrived to be together and to spend time with the bridal party — Shane’s brother and Hannah’s best friend. A big surprise, arranged by their event designer, Revel and Flourish, was a personal video message from Rainn Wilson — especially appropriate since “The Office”-themed décor was incorporated throughout the wedding. The celebration was complete with mini-desserts and a s’mores station, a favorite of the couple.

Hues of blues accompanied by coral and white were the color scheme for the nautical summer wedding of Andrea Simatic and Travis Millburn. Before the nuptials, guests were welcomed with a boat cruise on Lake Minnetonka, followed by impeccable edibles during the rehearsal dinner at CôV. On the big day, bridesmaids and groomsmen dressed in a soft mix of blues to follow the lake-inspired color palette; a watercolor print of Lake Minnetonka adorned the signage. Before the ceremony started, Andrea

and her daughter, in the bridal suite, read a special letter from Travis. Lush florals including anemones and garden roses adorned the tables and filled bouquets at Hotel Landing on a day blessed with sunshine and a light breeze. Amid the balloon arch, guests found their seats and prepared for the celebration to follow. As loved ones filtered out, they signed a watercolor painting of the lake, which Andrea and Travis framed as a romantic souvenir of their nuptials.

SPARKS FLY Nellie & Doug

TEXT: Sydney Stevens WEDDING: September 18, 2021

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: The Gardens of Castle Rock, Northfield HONEYMOON: Maldives

A heartfelt holiday proposal with a handmade wooden box made Christmas 2020 the best one yet for couple Nellie Ghazal and Doug Sutherland. After agreeing to skip gifts, Doug, a hobbyist woodworker, presented his girlfriend of three years with the box engraved with their names on it. Within it? The ring, of course. The Gardens of Castle Rock brought the couple’s rustic garden vision to life, showcasing their love for the outdoors. After their first look, Nellie and Doug shared handwritten vows and savored the special moment. “It really settled in just how lucky I was to be marrying

such a stunning and amazing woman,” Doug says. Below an ethereal bower of wisteria, Nellie’s father walked her down the aisle. Doug’s 91-year-old grandmother was in attendance, as was his large extended family. Doug’s late father was present through a lit candle, a loving tradition at Sutherland weddings. Eucalyptus and greenery accompanied by white florals filled the tables, accentuating the pop of peach in their color scheme. After guests sipped on signature cocktails, played a few rounds of cornhole and flooded the dance floor, the newlyweds departed under a sparkler send off.

Sydney & Brian

TEXT: Sydney Stevens WEDDING: September 5, 2021

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: Bavaria Downs, Chaska HONEYMOON: South Africa

Brian Wilton and Sydney Franklin had been dating just over six years when he popped the question while stargazing by the lake on the annual trip to Sugar Lake Lodge with Sydney’s family. Brian got the ring the day before they left for the trip; the proposal was a surprise to everyone. On their wedding day, Bavaria Downs was filled with fanciful florals, reflecting their bold personalities. Sage green bridesmaids’ dresses and bright blooms popped against the black linens at the reception. The bride did a

first look with her dad, accompanied by tears of joy. Since the “nearlyweds” had spent the night before apart, their first look was a most memorable moment. As Sydney came down the aisle, she carried her late family members with her in a locket holding their pictures wrapped around her bouquet. A graphic designer, Sydney designed everything from the signage to the background of the photobooth.

“We felt so fortunate to be surrounded by our loved ones who supported and shaped our relationship,” Sydney said.

AN ENCHANTING EVENT

Jackie & Shane

TEXT: Sydney Stevens WEDDING: October 29, 2021

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: Aria, Minneapolis

HONEYMOON: Las Vegas

A fall wedding featuring an abundance of striking florals, glowing chandeliers, and exposed brick? Yes, please! Jackie Rose Frane and Shane Bodle’s boho wedding dream became reality when the couple tied the knot at Aria in downtown Minneapolis. Shane proposed on Easter in 2019, presenting Jackie with a plastic egg with an engagement ring inside. “It was an awesome moment I’ll never forget,” Jackie says. After planning and replanning around the pandemic, the two were ecstatic to finally say “I do.” Jackie’s son, Maxwell, stood with Shane and his sister Isla, Jackie and Shane’s

daughter. “For some we may have done it backwards, having our children in our wedding, but it was so special for us,” Jackie said. The bridal party wore shades of maroon, blush and mauve, apt for the autumn date. The bride wanted to showcase her style without overdoing a “feminine” feel, so they opted for fur throws, cowhide rugs, and a marquee “Bar” sign. Jackie also surprised Shane with his favorite — an Uncle Franky’s hot dog cart. Chandeliers adorned with lush sprays of greenery added an ethereal feel to the industrial space. “Everything was perfect,” the newlyweds agree.

Kristin & Colin

TEXT: Sydney Stevens WEDDING: July 31, 2021

CEREMONY: Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Minneapolis

RECEPTION: Minneapolis Institute of Art HONEYMOON: Big Sur, California

PHOTOGRAPHY Marit Williams Photography

It was New Year’s Eve 2016 when Colin Pulte shared a midnight kiss with Kristin Jones in Chicago. Nearly four years later, the two were packing for a trip when Colin brought her into their bedroom and said he found something he thought she would like. He prompted her to close her eyes. When she opened them, he was on one knee asking her to marry him. On their wedding day, Kristin's grandmothers acted as flower girls before the bride walked down the aisle in a custom-designed gown from Stassi Holford, paired with Valentino heels as her something blue. At the cocktail hour in the pavilion at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the drinks

were served with napkins bearing photos from Kristin and Colin’s parents and grandparents on their wedding days. Guests found their names and chair numbers inscribed on gold coins held to the lip of champagne glasses on shelves throughout the museum as they were escorted to the reception. “You could argue that the best décor was the art hung within the gallery,” Kristin says. Loved ones gathered around the dining table, adorned with white botanicals and lush greenery accompanied by yellow lemons. Kristin and Colin have photos taken by the guests from Polaroids and disposable cameras as keepsakes to remember their black-tie affair forever.

VIBRANT VOWS

Anisha & Steven

TEXT: Sydney Stevens

WEDDING: September 4, 2021

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: The Depot, Minneapolis

HONEYMOON: France

Anisha Chada first saw Steven Wett at St. Olaf College, when she got his application for a medical volunteer trip to Honduras that she was leading. Nine years later, Anisha thinks Steven is just as cute as he was when he applied for the trip to Honduras. Wedding festivities began with a traditional Indian bridal shower and henna ceremony, followed by a sangeet , a welcome party for family and friends, complete with food and dance. Their traditional Hindu wedding brought rich florals and vibrant jewel tones to The Depot in downtown Minneapolis. Steven made an entrance on a white horse as guests gathered around him, welcoming him

to the venue with song and dance as a part of the baraat, the celebratory wedding procession. After his warm welcome, Steven was seated under a wedding mandap of hanging florals and greenery as he eagerly awaited his bride. A cocktail hour followed the ceremony, with drinks served on napkins featuring a hand-drawn sketch by Steven of the couple’s dog, Luna. After guests were seated for an Indian-style buffet, the couple made a memorable entrance with choreographed dances. The wedding weekend came to a close at the Sunday ceremony as Steven and Anisha crossed the threshold together at Anisha's parents' home as husband and wife.

NEW YEAR’S NUPTIALS

Casey & Keaton

TEXT: Sydney Stevens WEDDING: December 31, 2021

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: The Hutton House, Medicine Lake

HONEYMOON: Mexico

PHOTOGRAPHY

Uppercase L Photography

A timeless black-tie affair at the Hutton House made for an unforgettable New Year’s Eve for Casey Stone and Keaton Edwards. Ice candles made by the bride’s family graced the venue entrance; inside, guests were welcomed with Champagne and a crackling fire. Dazzling foliage with pops of white botanicals lined the staircase, making for a mesmerizing installation against the muted background. The bride made a statement as she opted for a champagnecolored wedding gown by Minneapolis designer Tara LaTour.

The groom was dressed to impress in a classic tux, while the bridesmaids wore black floor-length gowns to match the neutral tones of the day. Post-ceremony, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house after speeches from newlyweds' dads, the maid of honor and the best man. The bride changed into a chic minidress by Nadine Merabi for the reception to join everyone on the packed dance floor. As the clock struck midnight on their magical day, balloons dropped from the ceiling to ring in the new year and their new chapter.

LOVE IN BLOOM

Lily & Kolin

TEXT: Sydney Stevens WEDDING: August 29, 2021

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: The Cottage Farmhouse, Glencoe

HONEYMOON: Myrtle Beach and Charleston, South Carolina

Lily Pirila and Kolin Kiekhoefer’s wedding day was a testimonial to their love of nature and Minnesota summers. The couple’s warm, free-spirited wedding accompanied by faith and family included Lily’s step-mom and Kolin’s dad reading Bible verses after Lily walked down the aisle strewn with flower petals thanks to her adorable cousin. The ceremony arbor was garnished with luscious florals of toffee, quicksand, and amnesia roses, matching the bride’s bouquet. The venue’s grand trees provided shade and a picturesque

setting as the two exchanged “I do’s.” Guests headed to the barn for the reception, welcomed with table settings of flower petals, greenery, votives and gold lanterns. A table was reserved to honor relatives who had passed, their photos displayed in vintage frames. Guests took Polaroid pictures to compile into a book for the newlyweds to enjoy in the years to come. The Bundt cake was a crowd favorite, topped with the word “Love.” It describes the event perfectly, Lily says: “I will never forget the love shown to us on that perfect August day.”

Danielle & Zacharia

TEXT: Sydney Stevens WEDDING: September 5, 2021

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: The Skyroom at Red Wing Golf Course, Red Wing HONEYMOON: Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

As Danielle Anderson walked down the aisle, Zacharia Bowers thought to himself, “I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life with her.” Danielle and Zacharia, both employees at the Red Wing Golf Course, where they held their wedding, knew they wanted to celebrate at The Skyroom because of its idyllic backdrop and grand space. 651 Studio Floral outdid themselves with breathtaking blooms of maroon and blush roses, accents of light pink ranunculus, and caramel carnations, matching the fall shades of the day. Bridesmaids were outfitted in hues of red and

pink, while the groom’s sister stood at his side in a navy gown and the bride’s best guy friend stood at her side. In lieu of programs, the couple opted for a large sign at the reception showing the wedding party, including their names, role and relationship to the couple. At the head table, loved ones found their names inscribed on a cookie at their place setting. Special K-bars were also served, and a handwritten recipe card was displayed at the dessert table to honor Danielle’s late grandmother. Happy tears and joyous laughter filled the day with cherished memories.

WORTH WAITING FOR Rachel & Nick

TEXT: Sherri Hildebrandt WEDDING: October 1, 2021

CEREMONY: Nativity of Our Lord, St. Paul RECEPTION: The Depot, Minneapolis

HONEYMOON DESTINATION: Maui, Hawaii

A sunset walk along Mississippi Boulevard in St. Paul on a bitterly cold December night ended with candlelit lanterns and Nick Kelsey’s proposal to Rachel Weigel. COVID postponed their spring wedding plans; instead, they got married on a glorious autumn day. Family and friends from 18 states attended the ceremony performed by Rachel’s childhood priest, with siblings and childhood friends of the bride and groom as attendants. The real stars of the ceremony, though, were the four little ring bearers — the couple’s nephews, all under 5 years old.

Cherished mementos were included in the couple’s attire: Nick wore the watch his dad wore on his wedding day, and Rachel carried a borrowed and blue handkerchief from her late grandmother. The Mill City District of Minneapolis was the setting for the couple’s first look, as well as the locale for the reception at The Depot. “We feel so blessed to have had all of our favorite people in one place, especially in light of the COVID-19 pandemic,” says Rachel. “After missing out on social events for almost two years, people came to party, and our dance floor was alive and well!”

TOGETHER IN EVERY WAY Rylie

& Sam

TEXT: Sherri Hildebrandt WEDDING: September 19, 2021

CEREMONY & RECEPTION: Lutsen Resort HONEYMOON: Dominican Republic

Sam De Penning asked Rylie Brown to join the co-ed sand volleyball team during freshman orientation at Iowa’s Dordt University, and even though they lost every game, the two bonded over their engineering classes. Three years later, he invited her to a sunset picnic on the roof of the engineering building, where he presented her with a photo book of their adventures. On the last page was a photo of a ring with the words “Will you marry me?” The wedding festivities were held over several days at the North Shore of Lake Superior, one of the couple’s favorite areas. Golfing, visiting a winery and a brewery

and spending time with friends and family as they put the final touches on the ceremony and reception were among special activities, but what really stands out are the quiet moments the couple spent alone—at the first look where they read some of their vows to each other and stolen moments when they took wedding photos on the beach. Rylie’s grandmother used her skills as an interior decorator to create elegant décor, much of it from Idaho, where Rylie grew up.

“Overall, we are just amazed by how much people did for us,” Rylie and Sam say, “and how loved we felt during our wedding.” *

EDITOR’S PICKS

SOME OF OUR FAVORITE MOMENTS FROM THE YEAR IN WEDDINGS

BEST FLORAL DESIGN FLOWERS BY JERRY

Bride Lydia Patton knew that growing up in a family of florists was likely going to have an influence on her wedding day — and it also allowed her to transform Flowers by Jerry, her family’s greenhouse and flower shop, into a captivating ceremony setting. Patton says, “The theme of a flower garden going through seasonal transition from summer to autumn inspired all of our designs.” Along with a lush floral wall and spritely arrangements lining the aisle, Patton also incorporated six saplings whose leaves had just begun to change color to further the theme of an autumnal transition.

An intimate post-ceremony portrait session for Angelina Irvine and Joseph Paquette resulted in this spellbinding image by Janelle Elise Photography. With the quintessential lighting, a perfectly moody backdrop and the romance of the anticipated touch of their fingertips, the final product was nothing short of magical. When asked about this image, Janelle says, “The rawness of the space contrasted so well with the bride’s elegance. Sometimes simplicity makes a powerful composition.”

BEST CATERING IDEA CHOWGIRLS CATERING

When it comes to catering, you can count on Chowgirls Catering to satisfy more than just one of your senses — plus, they’re known for serving it up with a focus on sustainability! For this particular feast, our team asked them for a spread to include in our fashion shoot (“The Good Life,” page 80). We gave them some Renaissance-inspired imagery to motivate them, and they more than understood the assignment — they went above and beyond. With such a picturesque array, what more can we say?

From vibrant fresh fruit to a tower of cheese wheels to a juicy, locally-sourced steak, food this beautiful hardly needs a description.

BEST PHOTO JANELLE ELISE PHOTOGRAPHY

BEST CAKE INK SWEETS

A vision in white, this delicacy by Ink Sweets is a monochromatic masterpiece. Leah Backstrom, owner and lead decorator of Ink Sweets, credits her inspiration to the mother of the bride who planned the wedding around the themes of spring in Scandinavia and birds in flight. Backstrom says, “We wanted to keep it a crisp white but introduce some beautiful textures through the floral bas-relief and bird details.” Backstrom also added strikingly realistic sugared flowers that matched the florals present at the wedding, including gardenias, sweet pea and delphinium. And, beneath all the beauty was a scrumptious apricotsweetened vanilla cake with apricot jam and cinnamon spiced buttercream.

BEST EVENT DESIGN STYLE-ARCHITECT WEDDINGS

Sophisticated and minimalist, this wedding design focused on clean lines and contemporary style, with a little bit of sparkle from the fairy lights and Edison bulbs cascading from the ceiling. The classic black and white color scheme was accented with rich, velvet linens and sleek black flatware. Floral designs were modern and simplistic to keep with the overall theme, and a floral curtain doubled as a ceremony backdrop and as a frame for the reception band. *

BEST INVITATION DESIGN

HUNT

WRIGHT DESIGN CO.

Neutrals and botanicals make for a captivating combo in this invitation suite by Hunt Wright Design Co. Inspired by a warm, romantic palette of terra cotta and dark greens, designer and owner of Hunt Wright Design Co. Brandi Hunt-Wright says, “Using handmade linen paper with deckled edges created a delicate airiness that felt very luxurious and natural.” Little details like dark green tones in the oval-shaped wax seal, skinny velvet ribbon, and vintage postage stamps complete the suite.

BEST DRESSED

SARAH EDWARDS IN RAMADHAN

DESIGN

Bride Sarah Edwards, founder of Some Great People and Fashion Week MN, didn’t shy away from making a statement when she donned not only one but three custom gowns for her wedding celebrations. All three gowns were designed and made by local designer and close confidante of Edwards, Rammy Mohamed of Ramadhan Designs. While all were one-of-a-kind showstoppers, this luxe tulle gown takes the cake. Meticulously handcrafted by Mohamed with layers upon layers of colorful tulle, it’s the epitome of modern bridal perfection. Mohamed credits her design inspiration to understating her brides and their authentic personalities, and says, “Through this collaboration, I was able to design and create this tulle one-shoulder gown that was inspired by Sarah herself.”

The Countdown Begins

FIRST THINGS FIRST:

Tell friends and family. Set the date.

Choose the type of wedding you want (formal, semi-formal, informal; which season).

Set a wedding budget and decide who will be able to contribute and how much.

Visit, choose and book your ceremony and reception sites.

Pick a photographer/videographer.

Have engagement photos taken.

Start shopping for your gown. Start working on your guest list. Arrange for both sets of parents to get together.

9 TO 12 MONTHS BEFORE:

Sign up for any pre-marital counseling or classes.

Announce your engagement in local newspapers, if desired.

Choose your wedding party members. Arrange the first meeting with your minister, priest, rabbi or officiant and wedding planner (if using one).

Throw an engagement party.

Gather wedding inspiration. Start a Pinterest board. Search magazines and websites for ideas.

Begin adding the names of vendors and their contact information into a master contact list.

6 TO 9 MONTHS BEFORE:

Select a caterer.

Choose a baker, schedule cake tastings. Order your gown and schedule fittings (remember to bring your shoes).

Shop for bridesmaid dresses.

Hire a florist.

Book a band/DJ.

Start researching honeymoon spots. Finalize the guest list.

Book a stationer (and calligrapher, if using one).

Mail save-the-date cards.

Purchase your shoes, headpiece, jewelry and lingerie for the big day.

Book hair and makeup artists for the big day. Reserve event necessities. Book portable toilets for outdoor events, extra chairs, linens, lighting and so on. Start making a day-of timeline, determining what should happen when (speeches, first dance, etc).

Book a block of hotel rooms near the reception site for out-of-town guests. Register for gifts at two to three places. Start to keep track of favorite songs.

4 TO 6 MONTHS BEFORE:

Order all wedding stationery (invitations, envelopes, thank-you notes) and work out pricing for programs, menus and place cards, which will be printed closer to the date. Hire wedding-day transportation. Book flights and hotel reservations for your honeymoon. Arrange the rehearsal dinner.
