Alicia C. Creative left no detail unattended when creating this dreamy shoot at South Park Center in downtown Los Angeles. The light, airy scene is enveloped by city structures—a lovely juxtaposition of urban and romantic. A stunning, unexpected color palette of dusty blue and subtle peach extends to every component of the design scheme and blends seamlessly with the pale blues of the cityscape. Perched atop the venue’s rooftop, the sleek ceremony site incorporates geometric white chairs and a unique copper arch decorated with asymmetrical florals. Indoors in the reception space, light-filled floor-to-ceiling windows illuminate the intimate table setting, which is adorned with dusty-blue linens, organic floral arrangements and pale blue glassware. Coffee with your cake? An adorable coffee cart offers guests a quick pick-me-up to go with a bite of the minimalist white cutting cake. The blushing bride wears a light peach gown with lace appliqués, while the groom has donned a smart tan suit and long blue tie. For this design, staged at The Garden at Redbird , Mina Joo Events and The Flower Lab chose lush botanical touches to create an elegant atmosphere with a touch of whimsy. As so many of us did in March 2020, Alyssa LasCano watched as her world was turned on its head. Letting nature guide your wedding theme is easy when a venue offers an endless source of inspiration. Carol Keiner of The Blushing Details (@theblushingdetails) worked with Flowers by Leah (@flowersbyleah) to create a rhapsody in pink at the Los Angeles River Center and Gardens (@losangelesrivercenter), using the venue itself as the focal point for this floral-focused vision. The design features vibrant peach and coral peonies, blush lisianthus, fuchsia and peach garden roses, and just a few pink phalaenopsis orchids, with seeded eucalyptus and Italian ruscus greenery spread throughout the surrounding garden and water fountain. An asymmetrical arbor sets the stage for the ceremony, with half of the structure draped in white fabric and the other half covered in cascading flowers as geometric hanging planters float in the negative space in between. Down the center aisle are gold reticular boxes filled with tall pink larkspur, peach garden roses, ivory roses and fuchsia pink roses, together with greenery. The vibrant florals complement the venue’s natural beauty while drawing the eye with their spectrum of pinks.

Smoked Melon: Tequila blanco, mezcal, melon aqua fresca and lime with a Tajin salt rim in a rocks glass.

Clockwise: Blood Orange Mimosa in a Champagne glass; Passionfruit Margarita: Passion fruit nectar, tequila, Cointreau, honey syrup, fresh lime and passionfruit with a salt rim on ice; Tuscan Spritz: Sparkling wine, sweet vermouth and a squeeze of citrus topped with club soda and garnished with a dried orange and rosemary sprig. Served over ice in a stemmed goblet; The Blanco: Tequila, Cointreau, Fee Foam, Meyer lemon, Luxardo cherry, shaken and served up.

THE GOLDEN HOUR Coordinating the cocktails’ hues and flavor profiles with your color palette or theme is a great way to make the wedding reception cohesive and beautiful. Together, Flawless Weddings and Events and Colette’s Catering & Events took inspiration from the Muckenthaler Mansion in Fullerton and created a design influenced by that magical time of day known as the golden hour. The venue is renowned for its stunning sunsets, and the grounds are replete with beautiful Italian gardens, citrus groves and nut farms. With that in mind, Colette’s whipped up fresh citrus cocktails in an array of sunset shades, and the accompanying floral arrangements include fruits and greenery.

SET THE SCENE

Nicole Alexandra Designs and Leta Verbena Floral Design make a visual impact with their design at Cielo Farms, a venue nestled in Malibu’s Santa Monica Mountains. The oak bar is encircled by emerald-hued greenery and a cascade of garden-inspired blooms including Clooney ranunculus, butterfly ranunculus, blooming branches, drooping pieris japonica and fresh fruiting tangerine branches. The beautiful scene complements the brightly flavored drinks created by Sweetwater Cocktails featuring herbaceous ingredients such as lavender and rosemary.

“The EXPANSIVE alfalfa hayfield, its miles of green views and the LUSH abundance it represents translated naturally to The Flora Club’s table runner—and that GOLDEN GLOW of the setting sun across the field felt like the perfect CALIFORNIA KISS. ”

A distinctive ceremony installation sits among flourishing flora—and the bistro chairs look as though they’re growing up from the ground with the alfalfa. Nestled on both sides of the aisle, potted arrangements contain sheaves of pampas grass for a delicate organic touch.

Working with a space and not just in a space is an art—and this design is a result of just that skill. Tucked under a veranda and graced with cascading greenery, the reception table feels like it’s in a secret garden.

On the anniversary of their first date and in the presence of their immediate family and close friends, Arta Dervishi and Dylan Towns celebrated their previously postponed wedding at the beautiful Stone Mountain Estates in Malibu. An array of simple white and pink floral designs allowed the venue’s elegance to shine, truly capturing the intimacy of the 25-guest ceremony. The guests were seated around long tables, accentuating the singular sweetheart table where the happy couple sat. After the ceremony, the couple performed their first dance to “Say You Won’t Let Go” by James Arthur, and Albanian music played periodically throughout the night to honor Arta’s heritage. Late in the evening, guests snacked on hot dogs as a nod to how Arta and Dylan met at a hot dog stand. As the sun set behind the Santa Ynez Mountains, Stephanie Thomas and Sean Kirkhuff were wed in effortless style at Saint Barbara Greek Orthodox Church. The family-focused affair was especially close to the couple’s hearts because it was co-planned by the mother of the groom, seasoned wedding planner Annette Kirkhuff of Wheat and Honey Events. Sean and Stephanie wanted an organic wedding so they chose to line their reception tables with potted herbs that they planted with Stephanie’s mother. Music has always played a big role in Stephanie and Sean’s relationship, with the couple initially bonding over their shared love of music. Their musical passion shone throughout their wedding as did references to Stephanie’s Greek heritage. Stephanie grew up attending the Greek Orthodox Church, and Sean was baptized in that church before their wedding, so reflecting that religion and culture on their wedding day was important to them. During their rehearsal dinner, Sean’s uncle performed a song he wrote for the couple; during the cocktail hour, acoustic guitar music was played and included a selection of Greek songs. Other Greek touches included lamb chop appetizers, locally made Greek pastries and Greek dancing. After the ceremony, friends and family gathered under a pergola to laugh and eat as the sun went down, with bistro lights and candles bathing everyone in a warm light.

After eloping in November 2020, Jilli Davine and Jake Moss retied the knot in style a year later among their family and friends at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows in Santa Monica. The couple worked with planner Kristin Banta Events to curate a look featuring modern, clean lines in a palette of ebony, charcoal, oatmeal and crisp white, creating a sleek yet textural atmosphere. A string trio performed The Beatles’ “Here Comes the Sun” as Jilli made her way down the aisle in a strapless Monique Lhuillier gown featuring a high leg slit and floor-length cape. Jake stood waiting at the linen-draped chuppah, which was canopied by the Fairmont’s signature 140-year-old Moreton Bay fig tree. Once rings had been exchanged and the glass broken by Jilli, the couple made their way up the aisle shaking white maracas and danced their way into the poolside cocktail hour. For the reception, the hotel’s ballroom was transformed into a residentially inspired environment. Olive trees brought an alfresco touch to the muted gray setting, which was anchored in rich, dark tones. In the presence of their closest family and friends, Sarah O’Connor and Kelly Zaun were married at Klentner Ranch in seaside Santa Barbara under a tent of twinkle lights. Because the two love the ocean—Kelly is an avid surfer—a coastal chic vibe was called for on their special day. With sweeping views of the Pacific, oysters at cocktail hour, a surfboard guest book, and Swell Press’ escort display consisting of a fleet of surfboards, the couple’s coastal California vision came to life. Layered Vintage created flowers as vibrant as Sarah’s and Kelly’s personalities, while Wild Heart Events designed a spectacular space, full of color, texture and just the right amount of boho chic. The food did not disappoint, with stations serving risotto out of giant Parmigiano-Reggiano wheels, chefs slicing tri-tip steak and salmon, and delectable greens offered at a local farmers market salad station. The couple wanted their guests to hit the dance floor, so the ceremony florals were repurposed to highlight the band, and a “spicy” dance floor (its color is literally called “Hot Spice”) was created for everyone to enjoy the night under a sea of floating lanterns.

Ani Ohanessian and Christ Kirikian originally envisioned an Italian escape for their wedding day, imagining a ceremony in Venice, followed by a posh hotel reception. But, as with most weddings originally slated for spring 2020, those plans became impossible. This didn’t dim the couple’s spirits. The stylish pair found Italian romance and elegance in Los Angeles at The Majestic Downtown, a 1924 property that features 30-foot Italian ceilings, marble floors and sculpted marble columns, proving to be a convincing substitute for Venice. Ani’s one-of-a-kind gown was crafted by her mother, Arminé Ohanessian, who is the talent behind the RMINÈ couture gown boutique and known for her custom creations. Arminé took inspiration from the wedding’s original Venetian setting while staying true to Ani’s artistic personality. The mother-daughter duo sourced an off-white gazar fabric with bold gold lamé flowers and lined it with off-white and pink silk taffeta for a romantically opulent look. The look was topped off with a billowing cathedral veil accented with flowers cut from the fabric used to make the gown. During the reception, glittering crystal chandeliers hung from the ceiling above gold chairs and tables teeming with red roses and towering candles. As a sweet ending to the night, Ani’s friend Amirah Kassem, of the bakery Flour Shop, crafted a multitude of gold confections. When Ani and Christ cut into the cake, a deluge of gold sprinkles poured out—a signature feature of Amirah’s desserts—for an elegant yet fun touch.

On a beautiful beach in Santa Barbara, Charles Wedel and Brionne Davis were united in marriage. As they honored both their astrological signs and their shared spiritual values, the couple were wed barefoot on the sand. As the sun set, 85 people joined to encircle the couple as the two exchanged vows and merged their last names to create the new surname Davel. Their ceremony was unique in that every guest had a ribbon attached to their chair, and during the ceremony, members of the audience tied their ribbons together. The bridal party then collected the ribbons to bind Charlie’s and Brionne’s wrists together. The song “Illumination” by Secret Garden was performed on violin by their cousin Theresa Sonnleitner. A number of sacred rituals paid homage to freedom fighters, philosophers, religion and magic, creating a vibrant celebration of hope and love. The festivities included Charlie and Brionne’s first dance to Florence and the Machine’s cover of “Stand by Me,” a much anticipated dance as the Davels had first heard the song together while on vacation. As the last song played, a mash-up of Dionne Warwick’s “That’s What Friends Are For” and Katy Perry’s “Firework,” everyone joined hands in an emotional close to a beautiful day.

Taylor Bourgeois and Rachael Burnham took inspiration from the Tuscan countryside and coastal elegance for their dazzling event at Villa Loriana in San Luis Obispo. The couple met during their sophomore year at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and their love of the town brought them from Chicago to SLO for their wedding day. Rachael looked stunning in a simple gown with an elegant neckline, and Taylor’s blue suit was very dapper. Acknowledging the importance of family, both the bride and groom opted to have their siblings in their bridal party. To honor grandparents who were no longer with them, Rachael and Taylor highlighted family during their ceremony, and Rachael wore her grandmother’s ring. To enhance the social ambiance, foodies Taylor and Rachael chose a station-style dinner that served delectable bites from a variety of different cuisines; the lobster rolls and grab-and-go gelato bites were guest favorites. The floral design was timeless, featuring white and toffee long-stemmed roses in the bridal party bouquets, and organic and asymmetrical arrangements at the reception. A Polaroid station at the reception offered guests a chance to snap commemorative pictures, which the couple later mailed out with thank-you cards. The reception was a true celebration, with a live band playing and the dance floor fully occupied throughout the night. After the couple had had to postpone their event three times due to the pandemic, bride Rachael said, “The entire day was exactly what we had waited for, and it was all worth the wait!”

Sarah Dada and Shawn Harris’ fall fete was steeped in tradition, drawing on Sarah’s South Asian heritage and uniting it with Shawn’s hometown of Los Angeles. Vibrant, rich colors of deep red and gold filled The Garden at Redbird, and colorful organic florals ebulliently reflected the wedding’s theme of joy. A baraat, a traditional Indian wedding procession involving the groom, kicked off the festivities. In a humorous take on this custom in which the groom rides in on a horse, Shawn arrived on a stick horse crafted by his godmother, a 6-foot version of a childhood hobbyhorse. Two brothers played dhols, a type of double-sided drum, and the Hindu priest from Sarah’s childhood married the couple. The vow ceremony was officiated by Brian Sonia-Wallace, Shawn’s childhood friend and the poet laureate of West Hollywood. Sarah and Shawn both wore traditional South Asian attire—as did most of the guests. Sarah wore a red and gold lehenga and accessories made by artisans in India; and Shawn, a gold and red velvet sherwani. The day incorporated Shawn’s love of music (he’s been a musician since age 10) and Sarah’s infectious love of food, which the culinary team at Redbird aced.

Victoria “La Mala” Ortiz, a celebrated Mexican singer and songwriter, and Eriq Patinio drew inspiration from Italy’s Lake Como to create their dream wedding at the beautiful Penfield mansion, which was a former home of Frank Sinatra. Ethereal floral arrangements of baby’s breath and roses were reflected in the elegant mirrored tables, which were awash in candlelight. To imbue the event with a celestial touch, Victoria and Eriq tied the knot on 2/22/21 to celebrate the angel numbers (a repetitive set of numerals) 222. Heritage played an important role as well. Victoria is from Mexico City, and Eriq is Filipino, so the couple included a mariachi band that played during dinner. Their first dance was memorable as Lupita Infante, a Grammy-nominated artist and granddaughter of the late Mexican film star and singer Pedro Infante, serenaded Victoria and Eriq as the couple celebrated their union.

Kate Arias and Alex West married in a modern, artistic celebration that fused each of their styles and reflected their unique qualities. Kate had the idea to marry at Millwick, a venue with an industrial ambiance that reminded her of her Pittsburgh roots, but it also appealed to Alex’s love of California and the qualities of his hometown, Los Angeles. The wedding colors drew on the natural neutrals of Los Angeles and the colors of a desert sunset. Warm, dusty colors, such as rust and red-orange, were carried throughout the florals and the decorations, and there were copper details as well. The couple purchased many of their wedding-related items from independent businesses and designers. Kate’s custom headband, which matched her wedding ring, was one of those items. Kate and Alex have a clementine tree in their backyard, which blooms in January, so they used dried oranges as place cards, which sat on top of the menus. Instead of a wedding cake, they opted for a Pittsburgh tradition of a cookie table, which featured a variety of cookies . Alex’s brother officiated at the ceremony, and guests remarked how “Alex and Kate” the day was.

Laura and Azzedine Finley were wed in a sophisticated, modern event at the elegant Hillcrest Country Club in Los Angeles. The day was inspired by classic black-and-white photography, and details throughout the event followed that motif, such as the modern black-and-white signage and the sleek bar menu. The groom’s brother, an artist, helped design the invitation suite and gave input on décor choices on the day. Contemporary black circular menus were a unique feature in the tabletop design, creating a bold contrast to the plethora of dazzling candles. The florals were timeless: long-stemmed white roses, baby’s breath, tulips, anthurium and yucca in classic white. A highlight of the event was the 10-piece band, including a three-piece horn section, which kept guests on their feet throughout the night. Music selection was key for this couple, who opted for a mix of dance classics, soul, funk and contemporary electronic. The first dance took place to “So Into You” by Childish Gambino, a cover of a ’90s rhythm and blues song. Not only was it a personal favorite of the couple, but it also reminded them of the beginning of their relationship. Coincidentally, Laura and Azzedine both gave each other gifts from David Yurman: Azzedine presented Laura with a silver cable bracelet with gold and diamond accents, and Laura gave Azzedine silver and black-diamond-encrusted cuff links with the wedding date engraved on them. In a special touch, Laura had nine diamonds placed in each cuff link, to add up to 18, the date of their wedding.

College sweethearts Elli Son and Gordon Dickson tied the knot in an elegant ceremony that drew on Elli’s Korean heritage. The two met at their freshman orientation at the University of California, Davis, and formed a friendship while living in the same dorm. When the big day arrived, Elli and Gordon’s vision of a timeless, classic and sophisticated special day took place at Sherwood Country Club. The ceremony was an emotional experience for the couple and their loved ones, beginning when Elli’s father walked her down the aisle to Kina Grannis’ “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” tears streaming down his face as they reached Gordon. Elli and Gordon were the next to fall apart, barely able to say their vows through their tears. During the reception, after dinner and toasts, Elli exchanged her Cocomelody lace-detailed plunge dress and her long cathedral veil for a traditional Korean hanbok, and Gordon did the same, changing from his tuxedo, with pastel flowers in the lapel, into a hanbok. The smoothly running celebration was a relief to everyone after having to set back the original wedding date due to COVID-19.

Katherine Liu and Nicholas Schiavi wed in an intimate ceremony with close friends and family in attendance. Like many other couples, Katherine and Nicholas decided to postpone their wedding because of the pandemic. Making the most of the extra planning time, the couple took the opportunity to collect table decorations and handmade items, such as guest books and programs, that would make their event meaningful. With an original guest list of more than 80 now cut down to 12, nearly everyone in attendance participated in some aspect of the wedding. From Nicholas’ brother serving as DJ to Katherine’s young newphews playing the role of ring bearers, the entire day brought guests into the wedding activities. The couple intentionally planned to hold their big day outside, with a leisurely pace in mind, allowing guests a chance to mingle, explore the property and eat whenever they felt inclined. Florals were kept to a minimum to emphasize the immense beauty of Casa Romantica. Gold was a theme of the wedding, found in rings, votives, the cake stand and bridal accessories. In a unique touch, Katherine created anniversary books for her guests, a booklet in which they could write messages to the couple to rediscover on their future anniversaries. In a nod to her heritage, Katherine’s mother also arranged all the decorative items on the tables into sets of 10, a lucky number in Chinese culture. In a sweet moment that paid tribute to Nicholas’ grandparents, he and Katherine re-created a photo of the grandparents on their own wedding day, sitting in a car at the golden hour. For Katherine and Nicholas, being able to spend time with all their loved ones was a highlight of the event, and the creative couple kept the wedding’s relaxed air by ending the evening with quality time spent over coffee and cake.
