LET LOVE RULE

We’ve brought this energy and excitement to life in this issue by gathering inspiration and charming details that will let your love shine. Whether you’re planning a grand celebration, a dreamy elopement or an intimate affair with a cherished few, it’s the thoughtful touches that reflect your relationship and make a wedding personal and beautiful. As we have learned, now more than ever before, love really does conquer all.

“Wherever you are, and whatever you do, be in love” Rumi

IT’S OFFICIAL: WEDDINGS ARE BACK! As we reflect with 20/20 hindsight on the past year and a half, when the tide was receding from the wedding industry as a result of pandemic restrictions, no one was quite sure what our couples or the wedding industry could anticipate or endure. Our biggest fear was the possibility that we would never host another wedding or social gathering like we had in the past. Nothing was certain in this uncharted landscape, but our instinct told us to anticipate a sea of weddings and social events once the storm had passed. And much like a wave returning to the shore, a force incomprehensible in its graceful power, we enter these new waters unified by a shared enthusiasm and a sense of purpose to celebrate.

We are living history as we speak, and in doing so, we are writing a new dialogue that future generations will inherit. While we may see new methods created in this past year carried into the future, such as how to safely host a wedding, one constant will remain: the importance of a wedding. The marriage ceremony has always been a significant moment in one’s life, to bring family and friends together to honor and witness the unity of love. Now, having gone through a pandemic, our appreciation of coming together for love, in honor of love and to celebrate love has more meaning than ever before.

As you begin to plan your dream day, the wedding community has changed; some companies may no longer be in business, and new companies have emerged. Here’s a tip for our beautiful couples to minimize any surprises when planning the big day: Turn to our California Wedding Day members to guide you. All of these businesses have weathered the storm, reinventing and reeducating their companies in order to stand strong so they could be here for you as weddings return.

Here’s to having made it to the other side. Here’s to us all coming together in celebration of what matters most—love!

The Fillmore on Central: Established in the 1880s, the historic town of Fillmore now boasts a newly restored Presbyterian church completed in 2020 with rich wood finishes, vintage fixtures, cathedral ceilings featuring hand-stenciled rafters, a balcony and a mesmerizing stained-glass rose window. Image by Katrina Jayne Photography.

La Lomita Ranch: Its quintessential Spanish-revival style is something all of us love here in California. The estate features a brand-new pavilion, lush grounds and gorgeous accommodations—your own private oasis. Image courtesy of La Lomita Ranch.

INSPIRATION FOR THE NEARLY WED

DESERT MIRAGE

Dee Lee Designs and Shawna Yamamoto Event Design transformed the arid desert of Joshua Tree National Park into a dreamy iridescent oasis with glimmers of bohemian beauty. Branching out from expected neutral tones, Dee Lee embraced warm pastel tones to evoke a romantic atmosphere. The custom-made asymmetrical arch featuring pastel-dyed monstera palm leaves and bold shimmering circles was a showstopper and set the stage for a unique design. Continued on next page.

FALL/WINTER 202 1 CALIFORNIAWEDDINGDAY.COM | 23

Luxurious floral arrangements included dried elements, such as monstera palm leaves in soft pink, purple and champagne hues alongside classic roses and peonies. The table décor followed suit with dazzling glassware accompanied by blush and gold dinnerware, all of which were accentuated by an arrangement of ombre pastel florals. A unique touch were the romantic phrases on the back of the bride’s and groom’s ghost chairs. Rose-gold calligraphy place cards and a striking invitation suite captured the boho-glam crossover. Stepping outside of the box was key for Dee Lee. As she explains, “Exploring color in a desert setting and playing around with nontraditional décor brought our idea of elegant boho-glam to life.” — Emily Sweet

BRIDE IDEAS

TRENDS, NEWS AND NOTES

ELOPE LIKE A PRO

This past fall, Brooke Heflin-Cordero, CEO of Burlap & Bordeaux luxury event planning, brought to life her own dream elopement when she married Sven Gadzimski. If eloping is on your radar, Brooke has the following tips to help make it seamless, stylish and sentimental.

TAKE THE STRESS OUT OF THE MARRIAGE LICENSE. To streamline the process and keep the focus on celebrating, Brooke and Sven worked with the concierge service Couple License, which comes to you so you can skip the courthouse lines.

MAKE IT YOURS. In Germany it is traditional to have the official paperwork signed with immediate family only followed by a bigger wedding ceremony at a later date. Since Covid didn’t allow for Sven’s parents to join, the couple will keep true to the German tradition by having a larger celebration next year. They exchanged personal vows privately after the ceremony and even edited their civil ceremony to cater more specifically to them, bringing another personalized element to the day.

MAKE A STATEMENT WITH DÉCOR. Brooke chose bold florals to enhance the Malibu coast setting of their elopement. The couple’s dramatic arch featured sprayed and dyed greenery, which perfectly complemented the seaside backdrop and blended with the warm hues seamlessly. The arch was only one of many special touches, and Brooke encourages all brides considering elopement to focus on personalizing their day.

SHOWCASE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE. Brooke highly recommends working with a stylist to help find the perfect dress and accessories. With only five days to plan her own event, Brooke found just the right gown at Saks Fifth Avenue: a stunning Black Halo dress that embodied elegance, and statement pumps for the perfect finish to the look.

PERSONALIZE IT. Whether you elope or have a grand gathering, personal details are what make the day special. “There’s a special place in Malibu that we go to when we need to get away for a moment to recharge,” explains Brooke. “When we were trying to envision where we wanted to have our moment, that was the first thing that came to mind.” The couple worked with Happy Jewelers to design their rings, and their florals were inspired by beach sunsets, which the couple has long enjoyed. Brooke and Sven began their day with a breakfast for two and spent the morning together before turning their focus to wedding festivities.

FOCUS ON FUN AND BE TRUE TO YOU

Says Brooke, “After the ceremony and all the photos, we got home, changed into our pajamas, ate takeout and snuggled with our dogs. It was perfect for us.”

Family Ties

Reviving the past was the ideal way to start the future for bride Laurie Ellen Park, who styled her fall wedding based on her great-grandparents’ wedding over a century ago. With generations of Californians on her mother’s side, Laurie Ellen was moved to use tableware dating back decades as an homage to her family history. After settling on a smaller event because of the uncertain nature of the pandemic, the couple decided to fully embrace the intimate nature of a microwedding, using a family property as their venue and modeling the event after the wedding of Laurie Ellen’s ancestors.

Co nverted into a wedding venue by Laurie Ellen and her dad, the Greenhouse at Plantenders Nursery in Orange County provided the perfect backdrop for her own big day. Formal chairs and tables that had been passed through generations of Laurie Ellen’s family were prominently displayed during the intimate sit-down dinner that followed the ceremony, and additional furniture was reupholstered to match the décor. Using the same china, crystal and silver from her great-grandparents’ wedding, Laurie Ellen and her mom worked to create individualized and eclectic place settings. With their wedding taking place only days after Thanksgiving, the couple decided to take inspiration from the recent holiday for their reception menu, which featured mouthwatering farm-totable dishes. The curated event embodied family traditions spanning decades and set a firm foundation for Laurie Ellen and Ryan’s future. — Emily Sweet

THINK INSIDE THE BOX

Jasmin Michelle Designs (@jasminmichelledesigns) upped the design ante for Danielle Tamar and Alon Gilad’s wedding invitations to their intimate fall wedding, which was planned by Moments by Wayne Gurnick (@momentsbywayne). Seeking something unique, the group landed on the idea of an invitation turned keepsake box. Jasmin Michelle perfected the concept with a clean-lined custom acrylic box topped with a handmade invitation edged in gold leaf. Thoughtful and useful, the beautiful invitation transforms into a handy container for mail, desk items and more. —

BOLD & BEAUTIFUL

DISCOVER YOUR UNIQUELY PERFECT WEDDING LOOK WITH INSPIRATION AND TIPS FROM THE BEAUTY EXPERTS

Our highest goal is to ensure our brides’ ideas are heard and understood before we even discuss ours with them. We start with pictures as we can usually tell very quickly what a bride is liking even if she isn’t quite sure yet. She may not even realize how particular she is on her brows or blush color until asked.

Classic makeup gets an update with a bold pop of a jewel-toned color to accentuate the drama of the bridal gown. The makeup team at KG Hair and Makeup complemented the bride’s natural red locks with a rich blue eye shadow to brighten and open the eyes while keeping the look soft and romantic. “A navy or olive-green eye shadow or eyeliner can look absolutely gorgeous for a daytime ceremony and carry into the evening by giving off a sexier feel as the light changes,” says owner Kacee Geoffroy. “It’s a fun way for a bride to show her personality if she likes bolder things.”

Luminous, ethereal beauty complements this gown’s gold beading as the tiny orbs reflect the sunlight. Shimmering shades of gold and rose perfectly enhance the bride’s warm skin tone, and feathery, light eyebrows and delicate lashes call attention to the eyes. The bride’s natural curls bring an airiness to the style.

Effortless, modern hair is achieved with a combination of low, loose twists. To embolden the bride’s makeup, Page Beauty’s Tanya Bures applied smokey layers of copper and shimmering plum shadows around the lash line and created a soft contour along the cheekbone. Instead of the nude lip that is de rigueur with a smokey eye, the artist opted for a bold pop of pink coral on the lips to create a fresh look.

We want our brides to feel fresh, modern and confidently stylish while wearing their gown.
– Tanya Bures, Page Beauty

Our advice for your bridal hair and makeup is: be present, communicate, relax and enjoy. Be present and communicate during your bridal preview with your talented artist. Together you will create your perfect wedding-day look. Our main focus is to have our brides feel like their most beautiful and confident self.

Elevated and natural are the keys to both of these wedding-day looks. The artists from Design Visage embraced the naturally curly locks by amplifying them with just the right amount of styling and products. Meticulously placed lashes accent the eyes, while the lips are filled out with a light touch of gloss.

To define a bride’s look, we ask for three adjectives that describe her style and aesthetic. We also take into consideration the bride’s comfort level with wearing makeup as well as the design of her dress: the neckline, the shape, the back, the movement—all of this comes together as we work with the bride to create her wedding-day hair and makeup.

The brow is the main event in this soft, natural look. Dowburd created a subtle, smoky eye that incorporated hues of warm gold, beige, taupe, chocolate and a touch of peach to accentuate the bride’s hazel eyes. She then finished the look with glowing skin, warm earth-toned cheeks and a neutral glossy lip. Inspired by the movement and whimsical draping of the wedding gown, Dowburd had hairstylist Jenna Najera create an effortlessly chic up-style with texture and loose pieces softly framing the face.

INTIMATE VENUES FOR GATHERINGS OF ANY SIZE

IT’S TIME TO TRY SOMETHING NEW

While some couples dream for years of a big wedding, others look forward to having a day (or two or three) to spend in a cozy locale with their nearest and dearest. If you find yourself yearning for something slightly smaller, know that there is the perfect venue out there for your friends-and-familyoriented affair. Or if you still wish for a large luxe wedding but don’t want to venture down well-worn paths to find the most suitable of spots, these venues are refreshingly individual without sacrificing style.

STABLES AT GREENGATE

Greengate Ranch & Vineyard is r enowned for offering a luxury-meets-rustic-retreat wedding experience. The Edna Valley wine country ranch boasts a pole barn, a lakeside ceremony lawn plus vacation homes available as accommodations or bridal suites. Now, the beloved location has added a new location to its roster of event spaces by refurbishing its 1950s horse stables for use as a charming modern wedding venue. With an illustrious history dating back to the 19th century, the entire Greengate property is rich in character, and the Stables are no exception. This 6,600-squarefoot space is a blank canvas for creative couples to make their own. Large glass-paneled doors open onto the patio, which presents sweeping views of the property’s vineyard and allows for indoor-

outdoor options. Much of the original architecture remains, and there are even a few horse stalls in the lobby that still house the animals. And with an on-site catering kitchen, outdoor catering pad and plenty of lighting options, Greengate’s newest venue provides the perfect mix of modern amenities and rustic style.

QUAIL RANCH

Family owned and operated, this picturesque avocado ranch, perched on a hill in Simi Valley, is ideal for both outdoor events and intimate parties. The grounds of the historic Spanish-style estate are delightfully picturesque, with an elegant courtyard, flowing fountains, tall pine trees and towering oaks. Outdoor spaces abound for saying “I do,”from the brick patio tucked beneath avocado, lemon and orange trees to the lush manicured lawn and lovely courtyard. Cocktail hour by the pool—thought to be the first inground pool in Ventura County—offers a perfect segue to dinner under the stars. Regardless of your selection, saying yes to Quail Ranch means you’re giving back by supporting local farming and the sustainable-agriculture community in California.

CAL-A-VIE

Tie the knot in the French countryside without leaving California at the award-winning Cal-a-Vie Health Spa in Vista, just 50 miles north of San Diego. Nestled on 500 private acres of sundrenched hills, cascading vineyards and blooming lavender fields, the wellness resort is the epitome of romance and luxury. Marry in the Provençal style in the 400-year-old chapel and then celebrate in the stunning L’Orangerie, both of which were imported from Dijon, France. The L’Orangerie is perfect for receptions, with its three fireplaces, Old World French chandeliers and sweeping hillside views from the terrace. Cal-a-Vie’s threeday experience is available as a wedding buyout and ensures exclusive use of the property with unlimited personalized fitness classes and all meals included. The exclusive weekend includes a stay at one of the 32 villas adorned with 17th- and 18thcentury antiques; a customized schedule for guests from the spa’s roster of nutrition talks, morning hikes, golf, tennis and a variety of exercise classes ranging from yoga to high-intensity interval training. Also included are luxurious spa treatments that will melt away stress knots and leave everyone glowing—or just bask in the sun at one of the two pools. It’s truly a one-of-a-kind wedding venue steeped in luxury.

MUCKENTHALER MANSION

Built in 1924, the Muckenthaler Mansion provides inimitable charm and character in North Orange County. The 9-acre property features dreamy landscaping and a two-story Italian Renaissance–style mansion. The property was donated to the city of Fullerton in 1965 and has since been transformed into a locale for touring art exhibits. You never know what will be on display at any given time, so each event held at the mansion gets a unique exhibition of art as its backdrop. Full bar and catering services are available as well, so everything you need to plan your ideal wedding can be found all in one beautiful place.

THE RIVIERA COUNTRY CLUB

A pinnacle of elegance, The Riviera Country Club offers unmatched grandeur for stylish couples. “Our opulent ballrooms, beautiful ceremony locations and luxury hotel suites will delight your guests, while world-class service and outstanding cuisine combine to create an extraordinary wedding celebration,” says Tanja Janjic, director of catering at the country club. Whether you’re looking for an outdoor celebration overlooking the

ocean or a more traditional ballroom fete, The Riviera Country Club has you covered: Its George Thomas Room features rich wood paneling, a marble fireplace and crystal chandeliers, and the Vista Riviera Garden invites couples to say “I do” with the Pacific Ocean as their audience. Or, follow in the footsteps of Hollywood royalty and choose the Crystal Ballroom, which once hosted Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. To put it simply, if luxury and excellence are must-haves, you cannot go wrong with The Riviera Country Club.

RUSH CREEKAND EVERGREEN LODGES IN YOSEMITE

If you’re looking for a wedding in which friends, family and love take center stage, look no further than the Rush Creek and Evergreen lodges in Yosemite. Nestled next to the singularly stunning national park, these two properties provide

exceptional wedding experiences. Evergreen is best suited to adventurous and fun-loving couples, while Rush Creek offers a more polished experience. Rush Creek includes a brand-new spa that couples and their loved ones can take advantage of. The spa offers the option of privately hosting your party, during which little ones can splash around in the waterfall features, and adults can indulge in massages and facials. And the open design of the spa means everyone can be together at the same time. Rush Creek recently launched two new wedding offerings for soonto-be newlyweds and their loves ones: wedding wellness activities and wedding party “glow time.” The former features top-notch yoga classes—on the deck at sunset, on Boga boards in the pool or during a hike in the forest. The latter invites you to take time for yourself in the beautiful spa; for three hours, its unmatched facilities will be set aside just for your party. The day-of coordinators at both lodges are prepared to make everything come together seamlessly, so all you have to worry about is which hiking trail to take the day before and what to have for brunch the day after.

WEBB OF BEAUTY

DESIGNED FOR THE MODERN BRIDE, ALLISON WEBB DREAMS UP SOPHISTICATED AND TIMELESS BRIDAL GOWNS WITH AN AIR OF ELEGANCE.

“Wellsley” A-line bridal gown has a pleated front and plunging V-neck finished with a low scoop back, pearl detail and bow, $7,040.

Photography by Jenny Quicksall Text by Lara M. Burnap

Bridal designer Allison Webb always had an eye for fashion. As a high schooler in Peachtree City, Georgia, Webb would purchase dresses off the rack, and immediately take them apart to create a new look she visualized. It came as no surprise to her family and friends when she moved to New York City and began studying at Parsons School of Design. After graduation, Webb fine-tuned her skills as an intern at Oscar De Le Renta followed by positions at J. Crew and Tory Burch. Now, with a namesake line at JLM Couture, Webb is known for her elegant and modern wedding gowns imbued with a timeless aesthetic, clean lines, beautiful laces and delicate embroidery.

WHAT INSPIRES YOUR AESTHETIC?

AW: I want all of my gowns to be fresh and modern yet have elements of classicism. My goal is to make wedding gowns that allow brides to feel like the best, most beautiful versions of themselves on their wedding days. I want the gowns to be timeless, a little dramatic and sophisticated.

WHO ARE YOUR FAVORITE DESIGNERS?

AW: This is so hard because there are so many fantastic designers! I really love Adam Lippes. He also used to work for Oscar de la Renta and you can see an incredible level of refinement and polish in his designs. I also love Gabriela Hearst and am looking forward to seeing what she does with Chloé.

HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?

AW: I would say that my style is reflective of my bridal style: classic with a tw ist! I love a good crisp white shirt, chunky gold ring and great pair of shoes.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEXT COLLECTION.

AW: There is a lot of texture and focus on fabric! I developed a few new jacquard styles and have a dramatic satin gown that I think will be a crowd favorite.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR TODAY’S BRIDES WHEN CHOOSING THEIR GOWN?

AW: Go with your gut and wear what you love! Try not to be influenced by others’ opinions and only take your most trusted loved ones shopping with you.

AS A GEORGIA GIRL, TELL US YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT NEW YORK CITY.

AW: The energy! People here are driven, purposeful, real, authentic and are in the city to accomplish their dreams. New York has a vibrancy that I love.

BLOOM SHOW

THINK OUTSIDE THE FLOWER BOX TO CREATE A FLOURISHING SETTING FOR YOUR WEDDING.

I was inspired to create a modern celestial design. I wanted to combine soft and whimsical details with crisp, minimalist lines so it didn’t become too much of a theme. Sometimes ‘celestial’ is deeply rooted in moons, stars and horoscopes. I wanted a nod to it without overpowering our overall aesthetic. This walks the line of romance and present day while keeping it relatable.

TABLETOP

The crystals add dimension to the tablescape and play to the modern celestial vibe. Raw crystals hold the calligraphed place cards.

CENTERPIECES

Drawing from Japanese ikebana, Creative Light used both dried and fresh florals to create a heavenly free-form centerpiece that includes a touch of modern romance. The cappuccino-colored dried flowers add texture to the ivory and blush tones of the fresh flora as they cascade down the tabletop.

FLORALS

Kate Wright of Xo Kate Events and Creative Light make a floral statement with a garden rising from the floor. The staggeringly ethereal effusion of ivory and tawny blooms brings nature indoors.

BOUQUET

The bride’s bouquet similarly looks as though it has just been picked from the field, presenting a softly bohemian feel with an undeniably modern accent.

Reverie: a state of being pleasantly lost in one’s thoughts; a daydream. This feeling is what we aimed to capture...paying a tribute to both the tangible and ethereal qualities of its surroundings, we were inspired to create a dreamlike setting with a nod of spring.

CEREMONY

Set among the Santa Monica Mountains, Mulberry & Moss’ asymmetrical altar is straight out of a daydream, with its vibrant pinks and oranges speckling the greenery. A subtle ombre effect draws the eyes upward as the flora becomes wispy and cloudlike near the top of the installation.

TABLETOP

Yellow, pink and orange blooms create a stunning contrast to the backdrop of gray-blue mountains. A cheerful yet elegant centerpiece runs the length of the table, lending height and dimension.

BOUQUET

Bloom-focused bouquets are having a moment, Michelle Tu says. The summery roses and peonies were inspired by the bride’s gown.

The aesthetic for this design is sleek and timeless, with a loose, relaxed vibe. Midcentury modern and bohemian have a lot to offer when combined. Modern is very functional and adds a classy feel to an event, while boho styling adds character.

COLOR PALETTE

Jillian Bobinski of Jillian Nicole Events and Emma Seitz of Leta Verbena chose a color palette of desert browns and nude hues juxtaposed with sky blue. “It felt different and so applicable to Southern California,” says Jillian. “The desert browns and blues of the open sky and desert.”

CEREMONY

Rich brown shades with pops of blue create never-ending texture and depth in Leta Verbena’s floral wall, which serves as the backdrop for the ceremony. Gold palms, grasses, dyed orchids and baby’s breath come together in the organic showstopper.

TABLETOP

Atop the tables, petite arrangements of white and dusty orange roses anchor the romantic vignette. Anemones and purple orchids splash dashes of contrast.

BOUQUET

The bride’s bouquet culls the most delicate hues from the overall design palette. Soft lavender coupled with refreshing whites are accented with deep brown leaves.

SCENE STEALERS

The venue becomes the muse for these creative and unique designs, from a modern warehouse and a renovated church to a Southern-inspired estate and a sweeping mountaintop.

COUPLES SEARCHING FOR CLASSIC ELEGANCE in an outdoor setting will feel their hearts flutter at the sight of Twelve Oaks Event and Equestrian Center. This new venue entry is set among rolling hills and leafy pepper and oak trees in the heart of Temecula’s wine and horse country. The center is anchored by a colonial estate surrounded by rose gardens and sprawling green lawns and dotted with fountains. Designer Michelle Garibay envisioned a Southern-inspired design enveloping hospitality and romance with warm peach hues and delicate flower-imbued details. Decadent oranges and soft blushes are woven throughout the design, from verdant floral arrangements and the playful cake display to the invitation suite and sweeping sweetheart table. Genteel Southern vibes emanate from the elegant tabletop, decorated with delicate mix-and-match china and abundant florals.

WAREHOUSE VENUES SUCH AS THE LUCE ON KETTNER IN SAN DIEGO’S LITTLE ITALY offer the perfect canvas for whimsical designs loaded with color and industrial vibes. This newly opened event space within a historic building features large, exposed beams, streams of natural light and a stunning backdrop wall of shimmering gold shingles. The venue’s blank slate provided Fetelle Designs with room to play, which is a plus for couples looking for unexpected design details. Flexing their design intuition, Fetelle’s designers took deep-rust-colored hues typically reserved for fall weddings and then gave the look a light, spring-inspired approach by introducing blush tones. The contrast of the two shades creates dimension for both the space and the florals, which are composed of peach, mustard and caramel carnations; rain tree pods; autumn rust spider mums; quicksand roses; Tequila anthurium; and bittersweet vine. The bold look succeeds in being both modern and elegant.

THE ARCHITECTURE OF A VENUE’S SPACE AND THE VIBE OF A TOWN often serve as creative muses for wedding décor. “Inspired by the train station, city hall and iconic clock in the middle of downtown Fillmore, we wanted to capture the feeling of a charming small town,” explains Annette Kirkhuff of Wheat and Honey Events. The Fillmore on Central, a recently renovated 1880s Mission-style Presbyterian church, is the setting for a refined reception featuring a palette of navy and amber. Simple clear glassware and white place settings allow the bold navy linens and rust-hued florals to reflect the colors of the surroundings, from the painted wood beams to the stained-glass windows. The courtyard’s brick fireplace is filled with candles and framed by an asymmetrical floral arch, making a stunning backdrop for the ceremony.

NATURE IS THE IDEAL SETTING FOR CREATING A ROMANTIC AND INTIMATE CEREMONY. Whether you choose to elope or to share the moment with your nearest and dearest, California’s state parks, such as Marin County’s Mount Tamalpais State Park, just a skip away from San Francisco, are a breathtaking option. Mind you, it’s no small planning feat at these locations, because you’re required to bring in all rentals, florals and tents, but for those seeking nature’s beauty and bliss, their efforts fulfill their highest expectations. Mount Tamalpais’ golden light, expansive ocean views, endless rolling hills, along with the shapes of the surrounding boulders and trees, are reflected in the tabletop décor and florals. Thoughtful details that embrace the aesthetics of the environment round out the design, with textured linens, handmade pottery, earthenware dishes together with the organic cotton paper and design of the stationery creating a palpable richness. The floral arrangements look as though they were picked from nearby fields, providing a sense of luxury amid nature.

PAMELA & MICHAEL

Married and celebrated: CASA DI PIETRA, MALIBU Date: JANUARY 21, 2021

Pamela Craig and Michael Joyce, who live in Hawaii, met their guests in the middle for an intimate, mindful and sustainable wedding at Casa di Pietra in Malibu. The duo, who always wanted a small guest count with a dinner-party atmosphere, emphasized the theme of community at their seven-person event. One of the most important elements of their wedding was ensuring every detail supported local farms, small businesses and women of color. Bride Pamela hand-picked a team of women of color and female business owners to bring the celebration together. She also worked to have locally sourced food, flowers that would be repurposed after the wedding and to have the event be as close to producing zero waste as possible. Pamela and Michael were also adamant about dispensing with wedding clichés, opting to make the day uniquely their own. The dinner brought together the flavors of California with tantalizing dining options. A bold mixologist accentuated the dinner-party ambiance the couple had envisioned. Guests were treated to a variety of thoughtful touches, such as personalized menus, hand-painted agate stones at each place setting and Turkish towels to keep family and friends warm as the evening approached. In a unique and heart-felt twist during their ceremony, Michael and Pamela read one another’s vows, underscoring an unforgettable and meaningful event.

JESSICA & KEVIN

Jessica and Kevin Shulemson’s big day at the Huntington Bay Club was a classic beach wedding with notes of coastal chic and a touch of bohemian softness. “So many people think because a wedding is at the beach or on the sand that it’s all flip-flops and Hawaiian shirts,” says Jessica. “I wanted to elevate that idea.” Elegant whites, pinks and hints of blue provided subtle pops of color against the beautiful greenery in the bride’s and bridesmaids’ bouquets; this palette was echoed in the majestic double arch that served as the gorgeous ceremony backdrop. Lanterns, pottery and glass vases adorned the aisle, bringing a touch of whimsy to the romantic affair. The menu by 24 Carrots was a highlight, with everything from ahi tuna tartare for appetizers to mini corn dogs to quell late-night hunger pangs while a liquid nitrogen ice cream bar delivered sweet treats. Personal touches and tributes to loved ones were part of the affair, from custom-etched wooden place cards and thank-you notes that adorned each guest’s place setting to an emotional reading by Jessica’s brother honoring family members who have passed. Jessica and Kevin incorporated a “brewing unity” into their ceremony as a nod to their first date at the Belmont Brewing Company after they had both swiped right on Tinder. Jessica remembers, “The most precious moment of the evening was when both of us were sitting at our sweetheart table and looking out to everyone. It was like everything paused and we were in the moment—just the two of us!”

MICHELLE & MEHRDAD

Michelle and Mehrdad Bokhour originally had dreamed of a fairy-tale wedding, surrounded by throngs of their nearest and dearest at The Beverly Hills Hotel. But, as with nearly all weddings set for the spring of 2020, those plans were put on hold. After the untimely passing of Michelle’s cousin, who was to be her maid of honor, the couple decided they couldn’t wait any longer. Cielo Farms proved to be the perfect locale for their ceremony, with the reception held at nearby Saddlerock Ranch. Michelle’s Vera Wang gown served as inspiration for the event’s design. With its feathery, ethereal hem, the dress influenced the neutral palette and romantic look of the ceremony. Michelle’s dream of a white-carpet floor was reimagined and given an outdoor twist, resulting in a modern garden version of a ballroom reception. A floral wonderland was created with stunning frames of white roses from which sparkling chandeliers hung, blurring the line between ballroom and garden. Since the pandemic made the traditional Persian sweets table unsafe for sharing among guests, Maison De La Fork designed individual acrylic boxes of treats. Although their initial plans had to be revised, Michelle and Mehrdad’s wedding was the elegant affair they had always imagined.

ELIZABETH & JORDAN

Married and celebrated: HANGAR 21, FULLERTON

Date: JANUARY 9, 2021

Elizabeth and Jordan Muliaman celebrated their wedding in their own unique fashion, full of personal touches and family moments. Elizabeth took the tradition of “something blue” to heart and opted for ocean hues throughout the design of the celebration. From the hydrangeas and echinops in Elizabeth’s bouquet to the florals lining the aisle and the bridesmaids’ beautiful dresses, bold blues infused the elegant affair with vibrant color. The Indonesian tradition of family photo sessions while the bridal party prepares for the wedding was an important element for Elizabeth to include. Elizabeth and Jordan also honored their parents by presenting them with bouquets of gratitude during the ceremony. Another of the ceremony’s VIPs was Rudolph, the couple’s beloved husky, who strolled down the aisle as the couple’s ring bearer. After the ceremony, the grandest of grand entrances took place as the newlyweds arrived at their reception via helicopter. Guests gathered as the helicopter landed, and the newlywed couple exited the aircraft with AC/DC’s “Back in Black” blasting through the speakers for a truly one-of-a-kind entrance.

KATIE & LEE

Married and celebrated: PEACHTREE RANCH, KING CITY

Date: SEPTEMBER 12, 2020

Peachtree Ranch in King City bridged the worlds of western and classy chic, creating the perfect backdrop for Katie Rice to marry her childhood crush, Lee Whitney. Bride Katie’s wedding visions had always featured a wide-open space adorned with twinkling lights, something she and groom Lee were able to make a reality with their dazzling outdoor setup, featuring handcrafted elements built by Lee. After losing her mother five years ago, Katie paid homage to her memory throughout the day by including pictures of her at the ceremony, having her mother’s friends in attendance and adorning her bridal gown with a string of her mother’s pearls. With a striking color palette centered around the bridesmaids’ rust-colored velvet dresses, the event was imbued with warm, earthy tones and stunning complementary floral arrangements. Officiated by a close friend of the couple, the ceremony effortlessly embraced an intimate atmosphere despite a large crowd, melding both somber and light-hearted elements. Katie’s close friend Becci Londo designed a unique dessert bar that featured personalized cookies, cupcakes, macaroons and other sweet treats. A rustic photo booth and wooden signage gave a nod to the couple’s country roots. Katie’s customized “Mrs. Whitney” jean jacket, made by her bridesmaid Annie Biglow, added a whimsical country accent to her reception dress, perfectly complementing rancher Lee’s cowboy hat. Combining the couple’s love for nature, rustic and traditional elements worked in perfect cohesion for this bold outdoor event, and the night really was the perfect way for Katie’s childhood crush to become her lifelong husband.

JENNA & MATT

Married and celebrated: PRIVATE RESIDENCE, SAN PEDRO

Date: SEPTEMBER 26, 2020

After their engagement in 2019, Jenna and Matt Ryan were eager to share their wedding with childhood friends and family from across the country. Then their plans were halted by the pandemic. Despite having to shift their focus to a more intimate event, their dazzling San Pedro wedding wowed with a classic black and white palette infused with organic and natural elements, culminating in a sophisticated sit-down dinner. The San Pedro home of Jenna’s parents, with its sweeping coastal views, set the stage for this intimate, family-focused event. Monochromatic floral designs took the form of individual groupings of ranunculus, hydrangea, anemones and hyacinth in glass vessels, lending an ethereal yet sleek feel to the setting. As a fun touch, each place setting featured actual miniature pineapples as place card holders. The intimate atmosphere and the dynamic color palette, combined with a warm, carefully curated ambiance, created a memorable and visually stunning evening.

JENIKA & AUSTIN

Married and celebrated: THE CLIFFS HOTEL AND SPA, PISMO BEACH

Date: SEPTEMBER 12, 2020

After 11 years of dating, high school sweethearts Jenika Moreno and Austin Henderson couldn’t wait to tie the knot at the Cliffs Hotel and Spa in Pismo Beach last fall. After postponing their wedding because of the pandemic, the couple was finally able to book the venue three weeks before the big day. For Jenika and Austin, who can often be found enjoying a beachfront picnic and basking in the sun, the Pacific Ocean was a fitting backdrop for their wedding day. A palette of soft neutral and earth tones set the foundation for a bohemian-chic event that showcased the couple’s love for nature. The elegant centerpieces were crafted out of pampas grass hand-picked by Jenika and Austin from nearby beaches, and the décor also featured dream catchers from Jenika’s bridal shower. To accommodate the nighttime weather, Jenika, her mother and her bridesmaids were wrapped in faux fur shawls, giving the entire bridal party a swanky touch. The ceremony incorporated elements of Jenika’s and Austin’s Christian faith, culminating in an exchange of handwritten vows. This emotional moment set the perfect foundation for Jenika and Austin’s future together.

THE COUNTDOWN BEGINS

It’s never too early to start planning. Follow these steps for matrimonial bliss.

“Starting the wedding ‘planning’ with a transparent conversation about money, values and determining wants over needs will ultimately create a foundation for the financial cornerstones for a marriage. I’m always reminding couples that we are planning a wedding day, but you are planning a marriage!”

PLANNING | CHECKLIST

Reserve event necessities. Book portable toilets for outdoor events, extra chairs, linens, lighting and so on. Start making a day-of timeline, determining what should happen when (speeches, first dance, etc).

Book a block of hotel rooms near the reception site for out-of-town guests. Register for gifts at two to three places. Start to keep track of favorite songs.

4 TO 6 MONTHS BEFORE:

Order all wedding stationery (invitations, envelopes, thank-you notes) and work out pricing for programs, menus and place cards, which will be printed closer to the date. Hire wedding-day transportation. Book flights and hotel reservations for your honeymoon.

Arrange the rehearsal dinner. Schedule any beauty treatments (brow-waxing, facials, teeth-whitening) that you’d like to have done before the wedding. Send a guest list to the host of your bridal shower.

Order passport, if necessary. Purchase wedding rings; order engraving. Remind mother and mother-in-law to start shopping for their dresses.

2 TO 4 MONTHS BEFORE:

Order the suits for the groom and groomsmen. Meet with the caterer or facility manager to discuss menus, wine selections, serving style, etc. Choose and order wedding favors and welcome baskets, if desired.

Order the wedding cake.

Meet with your officiant to discuss your ceremony; invite loved ones to perform readings, if appropriate.

Choose songs for the ceremony and reception. Buy thank-you gifts for your attendants. Confirm group hotel rates for out-of-town guests.

Book your pre-wedding and wedding-night hotel.

Finalize your honeymoon plans. Send invitations to the calligrapher if you’re using one.

Plan your bachelorette party with your attendants.

Send a day-of timeline to your vendors so they’ll have ample time for tweaks and feedback.

Sign up for dance lessons, if desired.

1 TO 2 MONTHS BEFORE:

Mail invitations.

Do a hair and makeup run-through (with headpiece or veil).

Meet with the caterer to finalize a menu. Send programs, menus and escort cards to the stationer to be printed (if not using a calligrapher).

Send your wedding announcement to local newspapers, if desired.

Write thank-you notes as you receive gifts. Maintain a list of all presents received and thank-yous written.

2 TO 4 WEEKS BEFORE:

Plot the seating for the reception. Confirm times with all vendors. Have your final dress fitting. Write your rehearsal dinner toast. Compose your vows, if desired. Visit the salon for one last cut and color. Send escort cards and the seating chart to your calligrapher to fill in guests’ names and table numbers.

Enter RSVPs into a guest-list database, and call invitees who haven’t yet responded. Get your marriage license. If you’re changing your name, order several extra copies. If changing your name, make arrangements with Social Security, Department of Motor Vehicles, credit card companies and your bank. Mail the rehearsal dinner invitations, if applicable.

Stock the bar using your final head count as a guide. Send out as many final vendor payments as you can.

Provide addresses for drivers of transport vehicles.

Create a must-take “shot list” and discuss it with your photographer.

1 WEEK BEFORE:

Compile the fees that will be due on the wedding day.

Give the caterer a final head count. Appoint a reliable pal to transport the cake knife, toasting glasses, etc. to and from the reception site.

Get final beauty treatments (facial, waxing, brow-shaping, etc.).

Pack for the honeymoon. Ask someone to bring your luggage to the reception if you’re leaving from there.

Give your honeymoon itinerary to a friend or family member in case of emergency. Pick up your dress or make arrangements for it to be fetched or delivered.

Arrange for the cake to be delivered to the reception venue.

Buy a guest book, if you choose to use one. Delegate small wedding-day tasks: someone to carry your things; someone to bustle your dress; someone to manage the gifts; someone to hand out tips; and so on.

Send a timeline to the bridal party, including every member’s contact information.

Break in your shoes.

Assemble and distribute welcome baskets to out-of-town guests, if desired.

Pick up wedding rings, check engravings and sizes.

Remind men to pick up formalwear and shoes, and check them for fit.

If you don’t have a personal attendant, ask a friend to help you get dressed on the big day. Talk to head usher about any special seating arrangements.

Arrange for a light snack for the wedding party to eat while getting ready for the ceremony.

LAST 24 HOURS:

Help decorate the venue, if necessary. Have a manicure, pedicure and any other last-minute pampering treatments. Distribute thank-you gifts to the wedding party, special attendants and parents. Organize for a note or gift to be delivered to your fiancé on the wedding day. Take a relaxing bath, go to bed early and start getting excited. You’re about to get married!
