WHAT IS PHYTOCHEMICAL ? Phytochemicals are bioactive non-nutrient chemical compounds found in plant foods, such as fruits, vegetables, grains, and other plant foods. Further, some phytochemicals undergo bacterial modification to produce metabolites that are more biologically active than the parent compounds. Phytochemicals are a wide variety of nonnutritive chemical compounds found in plant foods, which may have health effects. A few examples of wellknown phytochemicals are flavonoids, phenolic acids, isoflavones, curcumin, isothiocyanates, and carotenoids.
