Summer 11 Camp Guide

Sprg & SU CAMPS Summer and Extreme Safari are recreation-based camps with a philosophy of PLAY. Through play we can empower children and encourage emotional and physical development. We want to engage your child in fun and educational programs that will foster a positive sense of self.

Weekly Themes Each week of camp will offer a different theme with coordinating crafts and activities. A detailed schedule will be provided each week. Please note that field trips are subject to change without notice.

Summer Safari is offered at Crooked Creek Park and Saluda Shoals Park (ages 5–10) daily from 7:30 a.m.–6:00 p.m.

(6:30 p.m. in Chapin). Weekly camp sessions begin June 6th.

Planned activities include field trips, Saluda Splash, Corley Island, arts & crafts, nature programs, sports and games. Each child must bring their own lunch and beverage each day. Morning and afternoon snack will be provided. Summer Safari is open to children who are five years of age by January 1, 2011.

Extreme Safari day camp at Saluda Shoals Park and Crooked Creek park is designed to keep youth, ages 11–14, active and busy throughout the summer. Field trips and activities will be planned to help ensure maximum interest and enjoyment.

Swimming, hiking, canoeing and crafts are just a few of the things in store for our “senior” campers. Participants must turn 11 years of age by July 1, 2011.

Summer Safari & Extreme Safari Registration Registration begins April 18, 2011 at Crooked Creek Park or Seven Oaks Park. Full payment for your child’s first week and a $10/child/week non-refundable/transferable deposit are due at the time of registration.

The camp offers activities like arts and crafts, karaoke, frisbee golf and much more. There will be several field trips during the week. Bring a sack lunch each day. Therapeutic Recreation Super Summer Camp Super Summer Camp is for children with special needs and their siblings. The camp offers activities like crafts, games, canoeing and more. Campers spend one day at Saluda Shoals Park and have one other field trip per week. Bring a bag lunch each day. Morning and afternoon snacks are provided.

Participants must be moderately independent in all activities of daily living. We will have a 1:3 staff to child ratio. If closer supervision is needed for your child, a personal assistant will need to be provided for attendance.

Spring Break Sailing Camp The camp will offer basic instruction in water safety and beginning sailing along with more advanced sailing for students who have attended camp previously. Sailing will be done in O’Pen Bic’s, Lasers, and Flying Juniors. Instruction will be supervised by a Certified US Sailing Instructor. Students must furnish their own PFD’s and must fill out an application certifying swimming abilities.

Crooked Creek Park. Inst.: Dinsmore Dance Camp This camp is designed for the early development of technical ballet/tap and movement. It meets the needs and limitations of young dancers by providing a carefully paced sequence of exercises. The technical training is taught through ballet, which in turn helps teach the proper shifting of weight and patterns in movement for tap. All of the activities are executed to fun music. Camp includes daily dance class, art projects, music and dance history, nutrition, anatomy, creative expression and mime, and dance vocabulary. Friday will feature an end of camp mini-recital.

Sprg & SU CAMPS Rhythm Camp Join us this summer for a 3 day fun-filled, rhythmic journey.

Bring your favorite percussion instrument...especially hand drums such as bongos, congas, or djembes. Other percussion instruments will be available for your use. The goal of this camp is to further explore the musical element of rhythm while having fun playing in a percussion ensemble...a showcase performance will take place on the last day of camp.

Junior Jazzercise is tailored especially for the musical tastes and physical needs of children and has been recognized by the national fitness leaders association (NFLA) and The President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

Sprg & SU CAMPS Fishing Camp Tournament fisherman and guide David Yates teaches campers basic fishing skills and techniques for bass and striper fishing. Campers will meet at the Park (CCP or SOP) on Monday and Tuesday, and will meet at a fishing spot to be determined on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. There will be a fishing tournament and picnic on Friday. Campers/parents are responsible for transportation to and from each day of Fishing Camp. Transportation is not provided by ICRC. Saluda Shoals Park/Environmental Center Camping Skills Camp This camp is designed for young adventurers that want to camp but need to learn basic skills to successfully enjoy the outdoors. Our Park Rangers will teach fire making, shelter options, navigation, food foraging, plant identification, and snake species. Enjoy learning these useful skills in a fun and engaging environment.

Inst.: Yates Sailing Camp Participants will be able to come for a week of sailing instruction on the shores of Lake Murray. A US Sailing Association Certified Instructor will teach students. Basic swimming skills are required, and each student must bring a life jacket and closed-toe shoes. Camp will be held rain or shine, and in the event of bad weather, basic skills and sailing-related activities will be taught indoors. This camp is held at Lake Murray Sailing Club. Wear shoes and clothes that can get wet.

Mad Science: Red Hot Robots I Join us for a week of fun with amazing robots! Build a BRAND NEW Robot called the “Rockit Robot”— an intelligent robot with a touch and sound sensor. Learn about the uses of robots in our world and spend time experimenting with super cool robots including: sound-sensing robots, line-tracking robots, amphibious robots and robots that can play soccer!

Sprg & SU CAMPS Mad Science: Red Hot Robots II Join us for a week of fun with amazing robots! In this full week of camp, we’ll review the basics of robots with NEW activities and take-homes. Campers will build a BRAND NEW “BINARY PLAYER ROBOT”, controlled by black and white pattern read by an infrared sensor. Each day includes new activities that will challenge the mind: from creating your own Robot Scribbler to competing in a Robo-Sapien Dance-off.

Become a super sleuth and learn clever ways to perform tasks in this hands-on view of the science that spies use. From decoding messages to metal detectors and night vision, campers will have the opportunity to check out spy equipment, and discover the technological tools of detection! Identify and collect evidence, from fingerprints to tracks to trash! Recreate the scene of a crime using clues and detailed observations. Campers will use science to connect the dots and help sniff out the suspects in this hands-on investigation into the science of sleuthing.

Take a walk on the wild side with this peek into nature while discovering how to track an animal and use it’s “footprints” to learn more about how it lives. Want to know how the sun produces energy to grow our food, heat and cool our homes and even cook your lunch? These are a few of the things you will learn about in our amazing Earth Camp. Do your part to help save our planet!
