Urban households generally generate larger quantities of solid waste and sewage than rural households due to higher consumption patterns and greater resource utilization. Furthermore, waste generation is closely associated with household income. While high-income households typically produce more waste because of increased consumption, lowincome communities often experience greater waste accumulation owing to limited access to efficient waste collection and disposal services. These challenges underscore the urgent need for sustainable and integrated solid waste management practices in Kolhapur. Implementing efficient waste collection systems, promoting waste segregation at source, encouraging recycling and resource recovery, and enhancing public awareness are essential steps toward achieving environmental sustainability, protecting public health, and supporting the city's long-term urban development.
Residential areas currently face several challenges in the effective collection and management of municipal solid waste. These include irregular waste collection schedules, inadequate collection infrastructure, poor segregation of waste at the source, insufficient coordination between primary and secondary collection systems, and limited public awareness regarding waste management practices. As a result, waste accumulates in public spaces, leading to unhygienic conditions, environmental pollution, unpleasant odors, blockage of drainage systems, and increased risks to public health. In view of these challenges, there is a pressing need to systematically assess the existing solid waste collection system in residential areas of Kolhapur and identify opportunities for improvement. This study seeks to develop a structured and sustainable approach for enhancing waste collection efficiency through better planning, optimized collection routes, improved management practices, technological interventions, and active community participation. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the development of an efficient, environmentally sustainable, and economically viable solid waste management system for the city.

1. INTRODUCTION This study aims to evaluate the existing solid waste management practices in residential areas of Kolhapur and identify the challenges associated with waste collection, transportation, segregation, processing, and disposal. It also focuses on the essential aspects required for implementing an effective solid waste management system, including the identification of existing problems, documentation requirements, planning procedures, and optimization strategies to improve overall efficiency.
2. REVIEW METHODOLOGY Research plays a vital role in ensuring the accuracy, reliability, and validity of a research study. It helps minimize errors during the research process and enables the collection of precise and dependable data through site visits and other investigative methods.
