What is the IRE Incentive?

The IRE Incentive scheme is an initiative from Horse Racing Ireland designed to stimulate and fortify Irish thoroughbred breeding, racing and sales. Launched in 2021, the scheme awards a sales bonus of €10,000 to owners of Irish-bred winners of selected races across the Flat and NH programmes in Ireland and Britain.
How do horses qualify for the IRE Incentive?
Horses carrying the (IRE) suffix and Foal Levy compliant are eligible to win IRE Incentive bonuses and eligible to be bought using IRE Incentive bonuses. Horses carrying other suffixes do not qualify. (IRE) horses for whom Foal Levy has not been paid do not qualify.
What races are included in the IRE Incentive scheme?
Scheme races include two-year-old fillies’ maidens; two-year-old auction maidens and median auction races; and National Hunt auction races. In 2023 there are more than 200 races in Ireland and Britain in total.
How can IRE Incentive bonuses be spent?
Bonus-winners have until the end of the following year to spend their bonus on Irish-breds at Irish sales. Only horses carrying the (IRE) suffix and Foal Levy compliant are eligible to be bought with IRE Incentive bonuses.

Fortifying Irish breeding & sales
“My ‘double green’ clients have been lucky enough to win a few bonuses over the last two years. Actually we made it part of our buying strategy at last year’s sales to target more Irish-breds with the incentive attached.”
