he ashes of Irishman John Joseph Walsh were presented to his direct descendants at a special ceremony in Kalgoorlie on April 28.

It was exactly 100 years to the day since Walsh – a Detective Inspector [DI] with the Gold Stealing Detection Unit (GSDU) – and his colleague Detective Sergeant [DS]Alexander Henry Pitman – who were described as “incorruptible” and “courageous” were last seen alive as they set out to catch gold thieves.

“Their deaths profoundly affected their families, colleagues and the wider community, and remain among the most significant and solemn losses in Western Australia Police Force history,” WA Police said. “A century on, the Western Australia Police Force will honour their service and sacrifice with a commemorative service at the memorial site in Kalgoorlie.”

As part of the centenary commemorations, the remaining ashes of [DI] Walsh and [DS] Pitman were transported by the Police Air Wing from Jandakot to Kalgoorlie, escorted by an honour guard from Police HQ. Police Commissioner Col Blanch formally received the ashes before escorting them to family representatives. A century after their deaths, all known remains of the officers have now been returned to their families and laid to rest with the dignity and respect. The ceremony was held at a new memorial on the outskirts of Kalgoorlie where their mutilated bodies were found.

The GSDU was formed in Kalgoorlie in 1906 and to this day is the only specialised police force in the world dedicated to gold theft. The squad is funded by mining companies to the tune of nearly $400,000 a year.

John Joseph Walsh was born on Valentines Day 1862, at Kilfinnane, Co. Limerick and went to school in the village of Ardpatrick before going on to study medicine at QUeen’s College, Royal University of Ireland, Cork. In 1881 he emigrated to Sydney and joined the police force and served around NSW and Queensland.

He came to Perth in 1891 and joined the Western Australian police force. In 1897 he was assigned to the detective branch and worked at Fremantle and Kalgoorlie. In 1905 he was promoted detective-sergeant in charge of Fremantle.

Three years later he was transferred to Kalgoorlie where he took charge of the detective branch and the gold-stealing staff.

The bicycles of the officers as they were found in the bush down in illegal furnaces in the bush – was rampant at the time, so much so that mine owners who were taking heavy losses got a royal commission into the problem, which led to the formation of the gold stealing unit.

Known as an honest and hardworking cop he was also an excellent sportsman and boxer, weight lifter, runner and seasoned bushman. In 1912 he was transferred back to Perth as a sub-inspector and returned to Kalgoorlie in 1920 where he took over the gold-stealing unit again. By 1924 the unit had

been reduced from six officers to just Walsh and Pitman and death threats were made against them.

Their wives and children returned to Perth. The last time Walsh and Pitman were seen alive was on April 28 1926 when the pair set off by bicycle into the bush. The need for secrecy meant they did not let Kalgoorlie police station know their movements and their absence did not immediately cause concern.

But on May 12 their burnt and dismembered bodies were discovered dumped in an Millers Find mineshaft, about six miles outside Kalgoorlie, sparking a massive manhunt. Their push bikes were found in the bush about a week later, about 17km away. A gold smelting site was also

Detectives from Perth were brought up to help find the culprits and on June 6 three local men – Evan Clarke, Phillip Treffene and William Coulter – were arrested. In return for clemency Clarke informed police that while he had helped to get rid of the bodies the other two men had killed them. The court found Treffene and Coulter guilty and both were hanged.

The remains of John Walsh were buried in Karrakatta cemetery on May 17. He was 64 years old when he was killed and was survived by his wife, one daughter and three sons while Pitman was 54 and was survived by his second wife (his first wife died in childbirth), one son and two daughters.

That memorial – a statue of the symbolic female figure of justice, head bowed but without the traditional blindfold – now stands near the chapel of the WA Police Academy in Joondalup.

A Kalgoorlie memorial – at the site where their bodies were found – was opened in May 2024. The site is within a mining lease held by Norton Gold Fields but has public access thanks to a collaboration with the WA Police Historical Society.

“As kids, every time we drove past the East Perth memorial mum would point out it out and growing up we would visit it as well, and we also had some history books,” said Armadale Detective Senior Constable Matt Leitch, the great, great grandson of Inspector Walsh said. “It’s a story I’ve told my children, I was told growing up and it’s one that I hope to pass on for many more generations to come.”

DS Leitch joined the police eleven years ago. While the “seed of policing” was sown when he was young the decision to join up came much later in life when he wanted a career change and “to do something fulfilling”.

“Its a sense of pride for the family,” he said. “Its very meaningful to see the level of care the WA police force, the mining sector and all the local communities show in the Pitman and Walsh story.”

Cahill and Power murdered on gold escort 159 years ago

In Queensland, the first two police officers killed in the line of duty were both members of the ‘Gold Squad’ and old friends from Ireland.

“Constable John Power and Constable Patrick Cahill met their deaths on duty at the age of 25 and 27 respectively, brutally murdered near a lonely outback river crossing,” the mypolice.qld.gov.au website states. “Patrick Cahill was born in Waterford County in 1840, and was a childhood friend of John Power, born two years later in Carrick on Suir, between the counties of Waterford and Tipperary.

They emigrated separately to Australia in their early 20s and reconnected in Brisbane in 1865.”

The discovery of gold in central Queensland in 1861 sparked a rush to the region and all that entailed.

“Gold escorts were needed to transfer gold nuggets from the diggings to the bank for exchange into bank notes, which then had to be transported back to the gold fields,” the QLD police website adds.

“In early 1867, the two friends travelled together to Clermont to join the police force as Gold Escort officers, and they commenced their duties escorting deliveries of bullion and cash between Clermont and Rockhampton. Later that year, on October 26, Gold Escort officer Sergeant James Julian – another Irishman from County Kerry – was instructed to escort 10 canvas bags containing more than £8,000 in notes and coins from Rockhampton to Clermont. The man issuing the instruction was 45-year-old Thomas John Augustus Griffin, Police Magistrate and Gold Commissioner to the Clermont Gold Fields. Although a former member of the Royal Irish Constabulary and decorated for his service in the Crimean War in the 1850s, Commissioner Griffin came with a reputation for gambling, bribery, infidelity and tyrannical behaviour. He was also in debt for £252 to six Chinese miners. “Constables Power and Cahill were assigned to the escort along with Sergeant Julian, and Commissioner Griffin announced his intention to travel part of the way to Clermont with them. There was no official reason for him to accompany the gold escort and his presence raised the suspicions of the three officers. After several delays and false starts orchestrated by Commissioner Griffin, the escort departed Rockhampton for Clermont on November 1. Sergeant Julian had been relieved of his command after confrontations with Commissioner Griffin, and Constable Power had been appointed in this place.

The bank manager had halved the quantity of cash to £4,000 in recorded notes due to the inexperience of the young constable. Less than a week later, Commissioner Griffin returned to Rockhampton and bought drinks for his friends at the Commercial Hotel, paying with one of the recorded bank notes.

The same day, Constables Power and Cahill were found murdered at the crossing of the Mackenzie River now known as Bedford Weir, near Blackwater.

They had been poisoned and then shot. The fledgling Queensland Police Detective Office had its first major case to solve. After the crime scene had been examined, post-mortems conducted and witnesses interviewed, Commissioner Griffin was arrested on

The two officers were originally buried at the murder site but in 1869 their remains were exhumed from their lonely Bedford Weir resting place and reinterred at Rockhampton. In 2018 Blackwater police officer Senior Constable Gonna Gilliand led a community project to install a new headstone over their graves and a memorial and information board at the spot where they were murdered.

The Queensland Police Museum holds a remarkable photograph. Constables Power and Cahill (seated, centre) are pictured with their fellow gold escort officers and trackers. Cahill is glaring at the officer sitting beside him, Gold Commissioner Thomas Griffin. We do not know when it was taken or what is happening at the moment in time but there does seem to be an intensity to Cahill’s gaze that suggests he may have had some doubts about his superior officer!

Battles Catalpa Flag of the

W

hen the huge American flag from the Catalpa was exhibited in Dublin in April it was another hard won victory for fans of the epic Fenian tale..

The first time was an act of defiance against the heavily armed Georgette gunship – which had already fired a warning shot across the bough – and the might of the British empire.

On the 150th anniversary of that historic show down off the coast of Western Australia the flag from the American whaler faced another opponent – an institutionally indifferent Ireland.

The modern Irish state – the very Republic the six Fenians and their kind sacrificed so much to achieve – had no intention of commemorating the Catalpa Escape, even on such a significant anniversary.

Back in February Sinn Fein TD Conor Sheehan asked the minister for culture Patrick O’Donovan if he knew the National

make a comment about the potential of it being exhibited in April for the milestone anniversary.

The minister said he was aware of the flag in the museum’s collection. “My Department is working with the National Museum to explore possible commemorative initiatives to mark this anniversary within the short time frame that is available,” Mr O’Donovan said. “This may involve the creation of online content around the care and history of the flag and the NMI is exploring the feasibility of providing some public access to it.”

Before the end of the month another Sinn Fein TD Aengus Ó Snodaigh raised the issue again, and recounted the tale to the house and why it should be remembered.

“I think this event is worth celebrating,” he said. “It is being celebrated in Rockingham.. by the Irish there. It should be celebrated in the United States and celebrated here in the museum...this is important. It is strange there is not a commemorative programme by the Government thus far...it is something our Irish diaspora looks at to try to ensure we celebrate their role in Ireland's freedom.”

Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan agreed it was a “fantastic story” and “an essential part of the history of the Irish struggle for independence and it is important that we remember it”. But he also said: “The Department of Culture...does not have official plans to commemorate the Catalpa but we can certainly celebrate it.” He also said: “when it comes to official State commemorations, not every individual event can become an official State commemoration” and “simply because the State has not decided to assume

responsibility for it does not mean that individuals who are interested or individuals who are involved cannot seek to celebrate [special events].”

During the debate Mr O’Callaghan – a TD for Limerick County – said a ‘commemorations advisory committee’ of academics and politicians had been created in May 2025. “I am informed, and pleased to say, that the anniversary of the Catalpa rescue has been brought to their attention,” he said. “I am asked to say that the committee agreed

that a state commemoration to mark the event would not be possible at this stage because of the proximity of the anniversary, which, as I said, takes place two months from now.”

Mr O’Snodaigh said that even if there was not going to be an official commemoration the state could still be involved, and suggested a number of ways that could be done, such as ads or articles in newspapers, events held in embassies in America and Australia.

State institutions should also be encouraged to mark the occasion he added.

“The National Museum has a flag. The Minister knows of Joe Clarke who fought in 1916 at Mount Street which is in the Minister's constituency. I have a picture of that flag being handed over and he is in it, as is my father. It was in 1972. Frank MacGabhann contacted me and when I looked up the picture I remembered it from when we were kids.”

Frank MacGabhann’s name might ring a bell for some readers. In our May/June 24 edition we did a story about how he donated Fenian figurehead John Devoy’s chair – in which he wrote his memoir’s including the Catalpa escape – to the library in Naas (near where Devoy is from). For the last eight years of his life Devoy was looked after and cared for by Frank’s two aunts and in America at the request of Clan na Gael. When he died he left his papers and property to the two women, who in turn would donate his papers to the National Library of Ireland before they passed.

Frank’s name might also be familiar to anyone who took part in the excellent

Fenians Festival in Fremantle in late March.

He flew from Dublin to Perth to take part in the anniversary commemorations, which he did by attending most if not all events on the programme and squeezed in a few more for good measure (such as The Pogues concert in Fremantle Prison). It was the perfect opportunity to get to know him. We had communicated by email and text and a very occasional phone call. I had contacted him about two years after reading a piece in the Irish Times which said he had written a screen play about the Catalpa Fenians and was trying to get it made into a movie. He is still working on that and has secured some

funding from Screen Ireland for the project but he has also been busy drumming up support on the political front.

Born in Brooklyn Frank grew up with the Catalpa story and is steeped in its legacy thanks to his beloved aunts. As well as trying to get the inspiring story onto the silver screen (where it belongs) Frank started a one man political and media campaign in August 2025 to get the National Museum of Ireland to display the American flag from the Catalpa. He had seen it at the National Museum of Ireland back in 1972 when it had been donated to the museum and put on display for a few months, before being carefully stored away and forgotten about.

Jim Ryan, the great grandson of Catalpa Captain George Anthony, also visited Perth for the plethora of 150th anniversary events and occasions. He told Irish Scene that he and his wife Cindy were in Dublin in the 1980’s. On a guided tour of Kilmainham Prison it struck Jim that they should check out the National Museum of Ireland to see if they had artefacts from the Catalpa. so boldly used to ward off the Georgette was in their custody at the time. Talk about a lost opportunity!

Jim too is immersed in the Catalpa story and an ambassador for the cause. When he was seven years old he discovered a treasure trove of old and curious items in the attic of his home, a vast and impressive collection of the belongings, including many items from or about the Catalpa. In 1896, on the 20th anniversary of their great escape, Captain Anthony donated the flag from the Catalpa – which he cherished a ‘sacred relic’ – to Clan Na Gael in America at a ceremonial handover.

And so it remained, until October 1972 when it travelled across the Atlantic ocean to be put in the care of the National Museum of Ireland.

It was put on public display for about three months and then stored away and then faded into obscurity.

Fortunately Irish Scene editor Lloyd Gorman had more luck than Jim Ryan when he approached the NMI two years ago about the possibility of getting access to the Catalpa flag. The request was granted with a minimum of fuss and during a trip ‘home’ to Ireland in September 2024 I was taken to the anonymous building in a carpark where the flag was stowed away in a very large climate controlled metal cabinet along with other precious material items of historical significance (including I believe but cannot confirm the tricolour flown over the GPO in 1916).

The curator who accompanied me pulled out a tray to reveal the Catalpa flag. It was folded up on top of itself in sections and we weren’t going to disturb it, but you could see it was large, impressively so but how big was something I couldn’t establish at the time.

But time would reveal its dimensions.

I wrote about it for Irish Scene (Mar/Apr 25) and imagined that a journalist showing interest in the artefact might have altered the museum to the upcoming 150th anniversary – which I had mentioned at the time – and the possibility of doing something about it.

The curator in charge of it gave a number of interviews on Irish radio but did not respond to our repeated attempts to ask some fairly basic questions. In more than one interview it was claimed the actual Catalpa flag had been loaned to Fremantle. This would have been significant as a matter of local interest and would be worth including in our coverage so this publication checked it out thoroughly but could not find any evidence to support that claim. We asked the NMI about it (twice) and were told it was being taken care of but

That does not seem to be the case. In fact, subsequent attempts to get more information about the flag – such as its size – from the museum went unheeded.

got no response to the query (which had been seen and directed by the museum’s press office).

It seems strange that the first Irish publication to show a genuine interest in the Catalpa flag in a long time – and well before other media recognised it as a story – should apparently and inexplicably be on some banned list.

On April 14, just days out from the Catalpa anniversary SF leader Mary Lou McDonald also posed questions to the minister for culture. “In light of the decision of the National Museum to display the Catalpa's flag, if the National Museum also plans to display Jim Wilson's original letter to John Devoy and the 10 to 15 other items also in this collection?,” she asked.

The response from minister Patrick O’Donovan revealed a change of policy by the government since justice minister Jim O’Callaghan told the Dáil in February that the state would not be getting directly involved in any Catalpa commemoration.

“Through the support of the Commemorations Unit of my Department, I am very pleased to have provided additional resources to the National Museum of Ireland to facilitate this exhibition including the timely display of the Catalpa flag and look forward to viewing it myself in the coming weeks,” Mr O’Donovan said. “The James Wilson letters are part of the John Devoy Collection in the National Library of Ireland.

The Library is currently working with Kildare County Council on a digital display using material from the John Devoy Collection that will be exhibited later in the year in Kildare.”

Speaking with family and friends back in Ireland who made the effort to see the flag we understand lots of people filed through the room and took up this once in a lifetime opportunity to have a gander. Amongst them were history buffs and at least a few people who used to live in Australia – and Western Australia in particular. Visitors had a near universal reaction to the experience of amazement at the size of the object before them and its historic weight.

Frank MacGabhann may be in a unique position, having first seen it in 1972 and a second time in 2026. It was a proud moment for him, and others with an interest in the Catalpa story.

“People working in the museum came up to me to say they were grateful it was happening,” he said. “And the National Library of Ireland has seen the light too. They are going to display John Devoy’s papers before the end of the anniversary year of the Catalpa.

It’s what aunt Alice would have wanted.”

Having had some success in nudging the national museum, library and even the political system in the right direction Frank now has set his sights on a new target Belfast Republican rap trio Kneecap, whose new album is called Fenian!

“Why don’t you shitheads write a song about the Catalpa Rescue?,” he posted on the band’s socials.

“Mo Chara replied with a thumbs up emjoi, so let’s see what happens.”

Also on April 14, a motion marking the Catalpa’s 150th anniversary – including recognition of the six Fenian’s and the Catalpa flag – was signed by the leaders of the political groups in the parliament, and carried by the House.

The Catalpa flag is the biggest one held by the NMI. Indeed it is so large – more than four metres by three metres – the museum said it does not have a wall big to hang it on, not to mention concerns about the condition of hanging a 150 year old flag. 200 year long pipe dream A 44.5km section of the original 566km Golden Pipeline or Goldfields Pipeline that has been pumping water to Kalgoorlie since 1903 is set to be replaced, with work slated to get underway this month (May). The upgrade – which has been five years in the planning – is due to be done before the end of 2027 and is just stage 1 of a seventy year plan to decommission the historic pipeline and switch over to a modern alternative.

It took WA’s first Engineer in Chief Irish born Charles Yelverton O’Connor just five years (1898-1903) to design and build what was the longest freshwater pipeline the world had ever seen.

Some 60,000 pipes – each 28 feet (8.5m) long – were produced in Perth from imported flat steel sheets and formed into semicircles and joined together using innovative H-shaped locking-bars along the length of the pipes. Pushing more than eight billion litres of water a year along the route and against gravity are eight steam pump houses. An army of men laboured on the backbreaking and often dangerous work through hundreds of miles of bush.

Many doubted it was even possible to pipe water so far and questioned the cost of building it. The public and political pressure on O’Connor was immense and saw him take his own life about a year before the pipeline was turned on, validating his grand vision and silencing critics, albeit too late to save the tormented Irishman.

The pipeline has been a vital lifeline for Goldfields and Wheatbelt communities. Over the years individual parts of the pipeline have been repaired or replaced as necessary and about five years ago 16 | THE IRISH SCENE

“small sections” of it were replaced in the towns of Tammin and Kellerberrin. But this project represents one of the single biggest upgrades in its history and is aimed at future proofing it for the next hundred years and beyond. Ultimate responsibility for this ambitious task lies with another Irishman, Water Corp CEO Pat Donovan. In a previous interview with Irish Scene Pat – a native of Co. Offaly and an engineering graduate of Trinity College Dublin – said he is very aware he is carrying on O’Connor legacy.

“The Goldfields Pipeline holds a special place in the hearts of most Western Australians, as it certainly does with the employees of Water Corporation,” he told Irish Scene. “It is an iconic, heritage listed and still fully functioning engineering marvel that opened up the Goldfields at the turn of the last century and continues to support the economic and social development of the region to this day. The fact that it was the vision and determination of an Irish engineer CY O’Connor, who ultimately gave his life to turning the pipe dream into a reality, is not lost of me, another Irish engineer.” If anything the pipeline is a victim of its own success, and the passage of time!

Reservoir in Kalgoorlie will also be doubled as part of stage 1.

Water Corp says the affected 44.5km section is “ageing pipeline, mostly the original pipe” in the shires of Meerdin, Westonia and Yilgarn with “new sections installed primarily below ground alongside the existing route”. “Sustained economic growth means the scheme is now operating close to capacity during the peak summer months,” Water Corp added. The project's first stage will increase scheme capacity by up to 7.2 million litres daily from 2027 to meet growth and industrial expansion, as well as enhancing the reliability of the scheme.” The capacity of the Binduli

Practicality and functionality are not the only factors at play. The “historical significance” of the pipeline – which was added to the National Heritage List in 2011 – will also be preserved for future generations of West Australians. “In January 2022 we received approval under the Act to gradually remove and replace above-ground sections of the Goldfields Pipeline,” added Water Corp. “A condition of this approval is that we conduct a public history research project and prepare a Heritage Management Plan and Interpretation Strategy for the pipeline.”

The new pipes will be laid underground but whole sections of pipeline above ground will be left in place on the landscape.

Eventually it will become redundant for the purpose for which it was created but at least O’Connors pipeline will not disappear or be forgotten. In 2026 this impressive piece of infrastructure is 123 years old and by the time Water Corp has fully decommissioned it the pipeline will be almost 200 years old. By any standard that is an exceptional legacy to leave behind.

other nature lent a moment of impromptu yet impeccably timed magic to the proceedings at this years Easter Monday Catalpa commemoration in Rockingham.

There was already a sense of occasion in the air. The annual Australia Irish Heritage Association ceremony at the magnificent Wild Geese Catalpa Memorial – designed by Irish WA sculptors Charlie Smith and Joan Walsh Smith – was the last in a long line of successful events held in aid of the 150th anniversary of the historic breakout. (The memorial takes its title from the term Wild Geese that was coined for the 14,000 Jacobite soldiers and their families who fled Ireland after the signing of the Treaty of Limerick in 1691 and went to France where they joined the French army and served Catholic king Louis XIV.)

The sound of music provided by the WA Irish Pipers filled the air. Fresh from the Catalpa Dash bicycle ride John Clare and his friend Mark arrived with a copy of the Tallaght Fenian Flag and presented it to event MC David McKnight.

While there were a number of local, state and federal politicians and community representatives amongst the onlookers there was one very special guest. Jim Ryan, the great grandson of the American captain George Anthony whose conviction and courage was critical to the success of the historic escape.

Jim spoke passionately about his ancestor and how as a Quaker with a wife and young child at home and no connection to Ireland he still agreed to captain the ship on the ambitious but dangerous escapade, for no other reason than he considered it the right thing to do to help his fellow man facing injustice. His reward when he returned home to New Bedford was to be effectively considered a ‘pirate’ by the authorities and his seafaring days were numbered. In his early 30s at the time of the rescue George Anthony did whatever work he could find and lived for another 37 years, dying in 1913, at the age of 70.

Reenactments and dramatisations were performed brilliantly by actors Mike Sheehy and Keelan McTavish while special guests gave readings to those assembled. Clouds and rain rolled in and replaced sun. A plethora of umbrellas popped up amongst those gathered.

On the uilleann pipes and accordion Ormonde Waters played traditional Irish tunes. The event closed and with that the WA Irish Pipers struck up again and marched into the distance.

All this would have made for a memorable morning but there was one surprise in store.

Towards the end of the proceedings a flock of pelicans – six of them – appeared over the water heading inland. They flew low between the moored boats and then climbed together into the sky in the shape of a V formation.

The ‘flyover’ passed near to and above the gathering.

Not everyone caught sight of them but for those that did it was something special. In fact, it was magnificent, even joyous, almost as if the spirits of the freed Fenians had returned for a victory lap and to look in on their legacy.

One could have easily imagined the six geese on top of the memorial had broken free of their perpetual pose on the plinth and finally taken to the wind. Pelicans and geese are very different looking birds when seen on the ground, but in flight they are both graceful and have an impressive wingspan.

If Theatre 180’s excellent retelling of the escape of the six Fenians is called ‘Catalpa: Flight to Freedom’ then you might call this incidental but inspired natural sight a ‘flight of freedom’.

ost people at the AIHA Easter Morning event got there by car. Some strolled. The shortest journey was made by a man in a boat – Aidan O’Donnell.

“I wasn't aware that the event at the statue was on until a great conversation with Peter Murphy the day before,” Aidan told Irish Scene.

He read a book about the Catalpa about 15 years ago but his memory is not what it used to be. Aidan lives on a boat – which he has now given a special name – moored a very short distance from the shoreline and has led an adventurous life.

Originally from Castlebar, Co. Mayo he grew up there and Galway until he landed in Australia in September 2005. He lived in Yeppoon, Queensland before going on a two year motorcycle and camping trip around America. He then spent a few years working on a sailboat on the Queensland coast and worked for a year on Heron Island. He travelled to Europe for a stint and then bought the boat he calls home in Indonesia about nine months ago and sailed it back to Australia.

“I joined The Cruising Yacht Club (TCYC), which is very close to the memorial, and saw the Catalpa trophy and asked about it,” he said. The trophy is for the Catalpa Classic, an annual race staged by TCYC and Fremantle Sailing Club over the course of the route in Cockburn Sound taken by the Catalpa in 1876.

One club takes on the role of the fugitives and the other the authorities.

“In a strange coincidence I started racing here on a sailboat called BREO. You had photographs of her captain TJ in that story in Irish Scene January/February edition issue that covered the Catalpa race. I decided to listen to the Catalpa audio book about a month ago and the story just hit me in an amazing way.”

Aidan’s tender was stolen three times and to get ashore he had to use a paddle board for some time.

“I was moored further out so I requested one closer to shore,” he added. “I thought it would be nice to have a good view of the Wild Geese memorial while I listened to the Catalpa story so I picked the nearest available mooring.

I’ve been wanting an Irish flag for some time now and I thought it would be nice to have one to fly for the event so I bought one at the Catalpa Festival in Churchill Park the day before and hoisted it that night. It will fly until it shreds or goes down below with me,” Aidan laughed.

His beaming smile advertised his enjoyment of the event and opportunity to mingle with a section of the Irish community. A special treat was the chance to talk with Jim Ryan and his wife Cindy.

The experience inspired Aidan in at least two ways. Having been pondering for some time what he would call his boat Aidan has now settled on ‘The Wild Goose’.

He also wrote a poem, called ‘St Anthony’. “I tried to write a poem about Captain Anthony and the Catalpa,” said Aidan. “I've never written anything like it before so it's nothing really but I do like it and that’s part of the point I guess. I found Jim Ryan on Facebook and sent it to him in a message. Hopefully he reads it and likes it.”

The High Kings riding a new wave ahead of Perth return

reland’s folk powerhouse The High Kings say a renewed connection with Australian audiences has re-energised the band as they prepare to return to Perth later this year.

The upcoming tour follows a breakout period for the band online, with tracks including Irish Pub Song and recent single The Irish Roar gaining traction across TikTok and streaming platforms.

The group will bring The Rocky Road Tour 2026 to the PCEC Riverside Theatre on October 17, following what member Darren Holden described as a major shift in momentum over the past 12 months.

“We were like, ‘Oh, we wish we had something viral,’ and then this thing took off,” Holden said of The Irish Roar.

“We were kind of thinking maybe we’d missed the buzz a little bit in Australia,” Holden told The Irish Scene.

“But it couldn’t have been further from the truth.

When we first got there, everybody was wall-towall wedged in and the atmosphere was fantastic.

“It really re-energised us in a big way.”

The band, formed in Dublin in 2008, has spent years building audiences across Ireland, the United States and Europe through its mix of traditional Irish ballads and modern folk songwriting.

Now, Holden believes Australia has become one of the group’s most passionate audiences.

“Certainly in Perth, Perth is very much Irish,” he said.

“So that’s going to be crazy.”

“Something shifted for us over the last six months. We don’t know whether it’s the social media or whether it’s the new material, but people are paying attention now.”

Holden said the new tour would feature expanded production, storytelling elements and a stronger focus on original material alongside fan favourites.

“It’s not just banging out song after song anymore,” he said. “We explain what the songs mean. There’s more storytelling, more connection.”

The High Kings’ recent surge has also been boosted by Hollywood attention after two of their songs appeared in the acclaimed film Sinners.

Holden said the opportunity came unexpectedly after Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Göransson attended one of the band’s Los Angeles shows.

“He invited us to the studio the next day and asked if we wanted to sing on it,” Holden said. “It just happened organically like that.”

The band’s tracks The Rocky Road to Dublin and Go Lassie Go featured prominently in the film, exposing the group to a wave of new international listeners.

“The audience in America has at least doubled,” Holden said. “Fans that never knew about the band until Sinners are now on board, which is crazy.”

For Holden, who grew up in County Kilkenny playing church organ from the age of 11, the emotional connection audiences have with Irish folk music remains at the centre of everything the band does. “When you see people crying during songs like Grace or The Town I Loved So Well, you realise why you’re up there singing those songs,” he said. “I think Irish people connect through music wherever we are in the world.”

While the band’s audience abroad was once predominantly Irish, Holden said that has changed significantly in recent years.

“Two years ago, the Irish crowd was louder,” he said. “But last year it was almost 50-50 with Aussies. Something’s definitely happening.”

Alongside the Perth show, the band will tour Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Sydney and several regional centres during their Australian run in October.

hile the Catalpa escape is generally considered to be one of Australia’s greatest jail breaks and applauded as a triumph for Irish independence it was not a good omen for all Irish men.

Subiaco woman Penny O’Connor contacted Irish Scene after reading the January/February edition, which featured several stories related to the Fenian’s remarkable bid for freedom 150 years ago.

“There is always two sides to every story and there is another side to story of the Fenians and my family has some connection to that other side,” she said. “My Grand Uncle by marriage was Arthur Joseph Graham Doonan (who we called Uncle Graham). My Grand Aunt Marian (Max) was his second wife. Uncle Graham was the grandson of Joseph Doonan, who was Assistant Superintendent of Fremantle Prison when the Fenians escaped. Joseph was also an Irishman,

Born in Ireland in 1831 and Donnan emigrated to the Swan River Colony in 1853 on board the Travancore, with his mother and siblings. He went straight into the convict service and rose quickly through the ranks to become principal warder in 1859. A few years later when he applied for the job of assistant superintendent the superintendent of Fremantle prison acknowledged Doonan’s “sound judgment, industry and high principles’ and described him as ‘the most trustworthy and deserving subordinate officer of this service and as to education, manners and conduct I think him well qualified to take charge of any convict prison or depot.” He got the promotion in August 1867 and was assistant superintendent when the Hougoumont convict ship – the last to come to Australia – arrived in January 1868, with 279 prisoners, including 62 Fenians. When the Superintendent retired in 1875 Donnan assumed the duties of the office. The Catalpa escape happened in April 1876. Next to the comptrollergeneral Doonan was the highest ranking prison boss in Fremantle.

Penny said that because he was Irish he felt he was under suspicion for colluding with the Fenians and that his good name and character had been called into question. “The Board of Inquiry lay most of the blame at Fauntleroy, Governor of the Prison, and gave no indication that Doonan was to blame,” she added. “Despite this the strain

impacted his mental health and he attempted to slit his throat with a bread knife, nearly severing his windpipe. Doonan requested leave on half pay to recover but was instead retired on a pension of £115.18.1 per annum.”

By this time Doonan was married with six children. He adapted to his change in circumstances, and established a well-known General Store called Joseph Doonan and Sons in Adelaide St, opposite the Town Hall in Fremantle.

He continued his association with Fremantle Prison by employing Ticket of Leave men.

Joseph Doonan died in 1888 aged 57. Penny said she has been doing research into Joseph and the Doonan family because she plans to donate one of their possessions to the Little Museum of Dublin. A heritage expert and Subiaco councillor Penny has another connection to Ireland. Her husband is Limerick man Tony O’Connor who comes from a family of boat builders on the River Shannon and he is continuing that tradition with his own workshop in Rockingham.

Dubliner Henry Stoker captained Australia’s first submarine in Gallipoli

J

eff Kildea, an Australian academic wrote in 2007 in his valuable and definitive work ANZACS in Ireland that approximately 6600 Irish served in the Australian forces in World War I. Nearly 1000 of these brave, valued Irish Australian men and boys died.

These Irishmen do not feature in Ireland’s Memorial Records 1914-1918 (famously known as Ireland’s Book of the Dead’), with its hauntingly beautiful border illustrations by Harry Clarke and its heartfelt Irish sentiment memorialising their dead in a British War when the politics of 1916 made such memorialising politically charged in Ireland.

Instead, these war dead are to be found listed on countless Australian monuments and memorials in across country towns, fishing villages, farming districts, ports and old gold mining towns around Australia and New Zealand. They feature in our ANZAC death toll.

Kildea writes that many Australians served in regiments raised in Ireland too, their sacrifice and their blood spilled together. Under different flags but for the same cause. ANZAC Day is about the lives of soldiers from Australia, New Zealand, The United Kingdom (of which Ireland was then part), India, Africa, Canada and Turkey. It’s a story of bravery and of tragedy. There’s also an ANZAC story about the extraordinary men who served their ANZAC duty on a submarine.

This ANZAC story is a brief account of an Irish sub-mariner who joined the Royal Navy then the Australian Navy [RAN], survived Gallipoli and led an extraordinary life after returning from the war.

The story of this small submarine, AE2 is fascinating. The AE2 was a major asset in the young Australian Navy. With its sister AE1, the submarine set world records for endurance and distance travelled in its journey from the Vickers Yard at Barrow-in-Furness, to Sydney Harbour in 1914.

The captain of the AE2 was Lieutenant Commander Henry Hugh Gordon Dacre Stoker, a talented engaging Irishman, a cousin of writer Bram Stoker, the author of the world-famous story ‘Dracula’.

Commander Stoker was a theatrical, artistic author, actor and playwright, stage director, sports player and sport lover.

The Lieutenant Commander Stoker was born into a prominent medical family in Dublin in 1885, Stoker was a sub-lieutenant in 1904 when he volunteered for submarine service in the Royal Navy in Britain. He recalled the attraction of the submarine was the underwater allowance paid by the Royal Navy.

By 1913, Stoker was keen for adventure and volunteered to join the submarine service of the new Royal Australian Navy, whose submarines where being

built by the British. Stoker liked the idea of Australia – what’s not to like about the Sydney sunshine, and – as he would tell anyone – the girls of Sydney.

That he was a very good submariner is clear.

That he was a philanderer was his badge of honour. He commanded AE2 from Portsmouth on 2 March 1914, arriving in Sydney on 24 May. With its sister ship AE1, the two submarines patrolled the Pacific.

In 1914 Stoker returned to Sydney determined to get AE2 into the European War. Australia was prepared to throw everything into the war. He succeeded. AE2 left Sydney in December 1914, it linked up with the ANZAC transport fleet and via the port of Albany Western Australia, AE2 sailed under tow to Egypt then on to the Mediterranean, on its way to the Dardanelles.

In the early hours of 25 April 1915, as the invading ANZACs came ashore on the Gallipoli peninsula, AE2 commanded by Stoker sailed under water through the Turkish marine mines. ANZAC historian Kildea tells the story of the submarine’s crew unnerved by the scraping sound of marine mine wires on its hull as AE2 passed through the treacherous waters. Miraculously AE2 made it through the mines, the darkness and the exploding shells. Once through the Dardanelles, AE2 set about its mission. AE2 succeeded in sending a torpedo that damaged a Turkish destroyer, the Peyk-i Şevket.

AE2s purpose at the landing was to disrupt Turkeys efforts to supply her defenders on the Gallipoli Peninsula. In 1915, submarine warfare was in its infancy, as was the Australian Navy, yet the AE2 managed to breach the Turkish line and sink a Turkish ship, before it too was sunk.

Stoker’s submarine remained at large in Turkish waters for four days, before being hit by the Turkish big guns, and on 30 April it was over, Stoker ordered AE2 to be scuttled. Stoker and his crew of 32 were captured by the Turks and held prisoner. They were forced to work in construction, some worked on tunnels for railways.

died in Turkish camps of malaria, and miraculously, Commander Stoker escaped with two officers, later to be recaptured. At the end of the war, Stoker and his crew were freed.

After the War and on his return to England, Stoker was awarded A man of the Distinguished letters Service Order. He retired from the RAN in 1920. Like many, Stoker was recalled to duty for the planning of D-Day, operation overlord the allied landing to liberate Europe.

After World War II, Stoker became a successful theatre and film actor. In London’s West End, he played Dr Watson in Sherlock Holmes plays, went uncredited in an Alfred Hitchcock film and appeared on the BBC in Alfred Hitchcock Presents. He played tennis at Wimbledon under the name Hew Stoker, reaching the third round in 1921. He was also a keen rugby and polo player, and for a decade was the President of the Royal Navy Lawn Tennis Association.

At the age of 77, in 1962 Stoker became the Irish croquet champion. The remarkable Commander Stoker died in 1966 aged 81.

The reason for this story is to help highlight both the remarkable and unremarkable elements of the people sent off to war. ANZAC Day is a day of commemoration, one that helps remind us to remember all those lost in conflicts still ongoing A man of around the world today – most action notable in Ukraine, where Russian offensives continue in their attempts to annex another nation’s sovereign territory; in Gaza, where the victims are in our thoughts daily, and most recently in the destruction of Iran.

As we observe ANZAC commemoration, let us also bear witness to the lives lived by remarkable loyal men and women.

But also, the unremarkable. Then there’s Stoker and his mates who are in a different league all together. We remember all. Who served many with a tear, for Stoker I always had a smile.

Flying the flag for Anzac Day

ach year thousands of Anzac Day ceremonies are held around Australia. Western Australia has hundreds. Each one pay’s respect to fallen and serving ‘Diggers’ but they are all characteristically different. The Anzac Day service at the War Memorial Clock Tower in Rankin Gardens, Subiaco has a distinctly Irish flavour and has done for many years now.

Nations Peacekeeping flag is held by Tony Bray from Trim, Co. Meath while Alan O’Meara, president of the Irish Club has the tricolour.

Vice president of the Subiaco Shenton Park RSL sub-branch William Quinn was master of ceremonies on the morning. Also from Trim, Co. Meath, Willie is ex-Irish army and served as a UN PeaceKeeper in Lebanon.

It starts with a parade that forms outside the nearby Post Office in Rokeby Road.

Leading the parade – of ex-service people, RSL members and community members, including local scouts – are the Perth Brass Band followed by the colour party carrying the flags.

Australia’s ‘Éire’ Cup

ack in mid April the greens of Cambridge, Nedlands and Como croquet clubs were the gentle battlegrounds for the much sought after Eire Cup.

After five days of play in Perth – hosted by Croquetwest – New South Wales emerged victorious against Victoria in the interstate association croquet championship.

In that context and located in the heart of South County Dublin the Carrickmines Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club was established in 1903 and proudly claims the “privilege” of being “the worldwide ‘Home of Croquet’”. (On the other side of the Irish sea, before it became synonymous with tennis, Wimbledon was established in 1868 a croquet club).

The prestigious Eire Cup sits at the top of the lawn sport in Australia, but traces its roots to Ireland. A quick history lesson. It is a little-known fact (which would make

Back in August 1937 after playing a series of five test matches in England, the Australian International team journeyed to Ireland to play a series of matches at the Carrickmines Lawn Tennis and Birthplace of the Eire Cup: Carrickmines Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club now and then!

Croquet Club, Dublin, for the Irish Croquet International Eire Cup, which was presented for the occasion. Before the match was played, it was explained to both teams that the ‘Eire Cup’ would become the property of the winning country.

The Eire Cup was introduced at Carrickmines in 1928 to celebrate a Mrs Wilson, who had spearheaded the group that had established the Carrickmines club twenty-five years earlier. Four identical cups were commissioned for the event; the Eire cup is the Irish Croquet International Eire Cup, the others were given to Lawn Tennis and Handicap Croquet.

Matches commenced on 2 August and Australia was successful in winning the coveted trophy four games to two. It is mentioned that after losing the cup to Australia, Ireland challenged Australia to a

The Eire Cup was safely brought back to Australia and handed to the Victorian Croquet Association Headquarters- the then recognised authority in Australia for international croquet contests.

Interstate competitions within Australia had lapsed after World War 1 but a renewal was made in Sydney in 1948 when this trophy was first played for in Australia. It was again played for in Brisbane in 1949.

The Australian Croquet Council was formed in 1949 and the Cup then became the property of the Council.

New conditions for the Interstate Cup were drawn up and approved in 1950.

Initially only four players were chosen for the competition but that changed in 1982, when teams were increased to eight, consisting of four men and four women.

The Cup is in the shape of a silver rose bowl, and is a very valuable trophy. In 1951 its value was estimated at ₤100 but of course its real worth lies in the bragging rights and desire of competitive croquet players from across Australia to the gong.

“The standard of play this week has been exceptional, and a credit to all states involved,” said NSW team captain Stephen Pearce. “To take the title from a side as strong as Victoria is something we’re extremely proud of.”

WA State coach Alan Sands said the West would strive to claim it again. “I’m incredibly proud of our team and the commitment they’ve shown over the past two weeks of the 2026 National Championships, as well as in the months leading in.

While we fell short of the interstate title, the team delivered a highly competitive performance throughout.

You can bet we’ll be back again in 2027 when the Eire Cup will be contested in Queensland!” said Sands.

O

n St Patrick’s Day in Australia there’s never a shortage of bands or musicians with Irish heritage to entertain the ‘green army’ with their traditional Irish ballads and jigs (affectionately referred to as ‘diddly i’ music). So spare a thought for those bands and musicians with Irish heritage – who rather than pursue their traditional musical roots – opt instead for a more contemporary modern sound. I’m talking about Armchair Riot, led by Dubliner, Glen Breslin who originally hails from Rathfarnham, Dublin.

Breslin had some success with his band ‘Wishcow’ in Ireland back in the 2000’s.

It was June last year when Breslin (a door of a man) invited me to his leafy home in Australind (north of Bunbury) to have a chat about his songwriting and AR’s future direction. Over a couple of cans of Kilkenny we got down to work: me leading the conversation with my curiosity about where his song-writing came from. Rebellion, complexities of life, climate change, and the human condition he explained were the inspiration for most of his songs, while Trump leading the ‘war criminal pack’ of Putin, and Netanyahu is pushing the planet to the brink.

It was also during the interview he gave me a sneak listen to two 38 | THE IRISH SCENE

tracks planned for the band’s forthcoming debut album recorded at ‘Poons Head’ (Fremantle), but still yet to be fully mastered.

The tracks, ‘Bluetooth Parachute’, and ‘Lifeline’ I have to admit with Breslin’s grungy guitar riffs and the band’s rhythm section led

by Paul Howard (drums), and Ian Thompson (bass), left me hanging for more. So the only way to satisfy my curiosity was to attend the launch of the band’s debut album titled ‘Armchair Riot’ at Bunbury’s Prince of Wales Hotel, Sat, April 11.

The Prince, for a Saturday night in the heart of Bunvegas (as Bunbury is affectionately known by locals), was busier than usual, due mainly to AR over the past five years – through hard work and their dark sonic cocktail of grunge – have garnered a dedicated legion of fans more at home at an Audio Slave, Queens of the Stone Age or Sonic Youth concert.

Opening support act, Balingup’s ‘on the up’ musician Beth Chia – along with her no nonsense left-handed metal-head drummer Damian King – delivered a scorching set reminiscent of The Black Keys when at their peak. The Prince, with is excellent PA, lighting, and mixing desk (manned by the ever reliable Spider) along with a couple of hundred punters aching to sway, Chia’s dynamic electric slide-guitar-riffs with the support of King’s pounding skins had the mosh-pit pumping.

A short break gave punters an opportunity to take a breath, charge their glasses, chew fat with old mates, and sneak a smoke in the hotel’s popular ‘smoking cage’ before AR came on stage. Meanwhile, Breslin’s partner Armelle had set up the band’s merchtable where dedicated AR fans parted proudly with their bucks for t-shirts, vinyl, CD’s, and stickers. When things settled down Kielty asked Austin how he did what he did, swimming 4km and then running 2km to get help. “It was a really tough one to keep calm, singing talking to myself, trying to keep myself occupied the whole time,” said Austin. “When I hit the sand, my legs felt like jelly and I stood up and dove into the sand and I warmed myself up again and started running I felt like Hasslehooff on that one actually,” he smiled.

Kielty turned to Joanne for her reaction. “I can tell you now that every bad thought you have as a mum went through my mind,” she said. “I made the wrong decision by sending him off, I made the right decision by sending him off because we are all here to see you now and did he make it, we still didn’t know even we were rescued we didn’t know until we got to shore. There was no other way of getting out of this other than the decision I made which is every mothers nightmare and I hope that nobody else ever has to make this decision in their lives but we are here to tell the tale and we’re alive,” she said. “And I’ve got two little kids here who laid on the paddle board for over ten hours waiting for help and I can tell you what the craic we had out there but also the bravery of them and Beau and Grace they were amazing, for two little tackers!”.

Each and everyone of the family members showed true courage and resilience and even on the point of being rescued their lives were still in danger right up to the last moment.

“When the helicopter came just then a big wave came and knocked [me and Grace] off,” Beau said. “Mum was still with the paddle

board but me and Grace were on our own, we were about 75 metres away from mum before we got picked up.”

Another trip to Ireland later in the year could be on the cards for the family.

In the days after the Late Late Show aired it emerged that Austin had also been nominated for the President of Ireland’s Distinguished Service Award.

Why ‘Albo’ was the odd man out on March 17!

"H

alf Irish” Anthony Albanese did exactly as Irish Scene predicted in our last edition on St. Patrick’s Day – he let it slip past without as much as a nod in the direction of the day that was in it!

To millions of Irish – and the Irish aligned – around the world Tuesday March 17 was a cause for celebration of ‘craic agus culture’.

Before he became Prime Minister “Albo” was a Tony Burke posted this guest of message on St Patrick’s Day honour and could be seen smiling furiously at functions in aid of the occasion, parties thrown by the likes of the Landsdowne Club or the Queensland Irish Association.

But less than two months after he became PM in May 2022 you couldn’t find him within an asses roar of such festivities! It was like he flipped a switch inside his brain, leaving that side of his character and personality in the dark! Three years ago he managed to squeeze out a bland and generic, bland and brief message on social media for a Happy St. Patrick’s Day but since then nothing, not a single focal (word) or as a much as a shamrock emoji.

That is very strange behaviour for someone who has claimed to be

“half Irish” on his mother’s side (the other half on his father’s side is Italian) and who visited Dublin as a young man in 1988 for reasons that have yet to be explained. He is keen to talk about the significant and/ or religious fixtures of almost every race and ethnic group in Australia and their contribution to the country, but he has nothing to say about the Irish and their contribution to their adopted homeland.

While “half Irish” (his words) Albo shuns St. Patrick’s Day his own ministers are enthusiastic about it.

Tony Burke was with the PM as they copped anger and abuse from members of the Muslim community in a mosque in late March. The two men are old Labor Party stalwarts and close friends but they are not likeminded when it comes to their heritage.

“In Australia, we can all be proud of our heritage and share our festivals,” Burke said on social media. “Today, it's my turn – Happy St Patrick’s Day ” He also posted a photo which left no room for doubt about his pride in his Irish roots (which date back to when his great-grandfather emigrated from Ireland to Australia in 1880).

Mr Hill was also out and proud on March 17, Happy St Patrick’s Day! Over 2.5 posting “ million Aussies have Irish ancestry”.

Albo’s assistant minister is Perth MP Patrick Gorman [no relation]. Mr Gorman did not post a March 17 greeting this year but he did last year, a photograph of himself drinking a pint of Guinness and the words “Happy Saint Patrick’s Day”. He has also previously taken part in the St. Patrick’s parade in Vincent.

Radio silence from “half Irish” Albo.

Meanwhile, WA premier Roger Cook – who is a huge fan of the Labor PM – who hasn’t an iota of Irish heritage (that we are aware of at least) was happy to take a delegation of ministerial and MPs with Irish roots – on a sitting day of parliament – down the road to JB O’Reilly’s Irish pub in West Leederville, for pints of Guinness and some fun trying to pronounce the Irish names shown to him by Kinglsey MP Jessica Stojkovski (nee O’Gorman) [no relation].

Ireland’s ambassador to Australia actually ran into Mr Albanese in Canberra on April 2. Ambassador Fiona Flood posted this message on social media after the encounter.

“Thank you @AlboMP for taking a selfie of me with Jodie and yourself today at the @PressClubAust I was bowled over by the warm Aussie-Irish welcome you both gave me and delighted to hear about your Irish roots. Éire agus an Astráil – chairde go deo!.”

Sláinte is saol agaibh. ” Mr Cook and Co were not the only parliamentary posse to join in the St. Patrick’s Day fun, with a number of their counterparts in other states getting in on the act!

At a national level, even the Australian Labor Party – which is headed by Albo – posted a Happy St Patrick’s Day message: “For the Irish, their descendants and their many friends on this day of celebration, Slàinte Mhaith! ” ” The only person it seems who didn’t get the memo is Mr “half Irish” himself! have Irish roots – he is not unique. Signed Australian with Irish roots”.

One man said “Albanese comes from Italian roots! Facts matter.” We agree.

The truth matters but but Mr Albanese has – for some obscure reason – actively chosen not to reveal the facts of his Irish heritage publicly.

The comments it attracted were interesting. One person was proud of the PM and how he was “warm and genuine and proudly flying the Irish Aussie flag” but most were cynical. One was surprised “So Albo is Irish now?”, while another suggested his ‘Irish roots equalled Alan Joyce’.

This year that honour went to Simon Ehrenfeld MLC who was elected only about a year earlier.

“I am still in the first year of my cycle as a member, and today we observed St Patrick's Day,” Mr Ehrenfeld said. “People have often heard things about me from the perspective of the Jewish side of my family, but people may little know that I married into a family of significant Irish heritage. I know that in the past other people have given St Patrick's Day tributes, including the Leader of the House, and I obviously acknowledge my fellow deputy chair in Hon Andrew O'Donnell. I do not know your pedigree, President, but I know you bear a name of significant Irish heritage.

My wife, Samantha, comes from a family of McAneneys and Reardons. History traces them all over Ireland, most notably to Grace O'Malley, the 16th century pirate queen who commanded a fleet, was a fierce warrior and certainly bucked all the gender stereotypes of her time. Within our own party we have many significant contributors of Irish origin, such as Derrick Ruane and Jonathan Matthews, who are both senior office bearers. know people know it, so I am not here to give a long lecture on Western Australian history—we know that we were Australia's first free settlement in 1829, but in 1826, when Albany was founded, there was a small number of convicts, and about half of them were Irish. Ultimately, the colony's survival depended on significant Irish migration in the 1850 to 1870 period. That included very large numbers of orphaned girls, who were brought in on Irish bridal ships, if you like, to try to address the significant imbalance of the population.

Our history is certainly littered with good and bad tales of these things, but that Irish community was ultimately responsible for important settlements like York, Bunbury and Fremantle. It went on to produce many important figures in Western Australia, like Irish-born John Winthrop Hackett and George Throssell, and obviously Paddy Hannan, whose discovery of gold in Kalgoorlie we owe so much to the prosperity of this state today. In my own immediate family of six, five are obviously of Irish heritage. I note the Leader of the House commented in last year's St Patrick's tribute that we have 200,000 to 250,000 Western Australians who have Irish heritage.

Amongst other things it proposed a meaningful way “overseas citizens” could participate in “our democracy”.

“Greater engagement of our citizens outside the State in our democracy will strengthen the connection between the diaspora and Ireland,” the second diaspora strategy said. “Diaspora participation in presidential elections will strengthen the connection between the Presidency, the highest office in the State, and the diaspora. “‘We will: Hold a referendum on extending the franchise in presidential elections to citizens resident outside the State’”.

That was not meant to apply to the 2018 presidential elections but a rational person might have expected it should have been done by 2025, when the second seven year term of President Michael D Higgins at Áras an Uachtaráin finished.

Covid was blamed as the reason for why a referendum – which had been promised by then Taoiseach Enda Kenny – was shelved and allowed to fade away.

Rather than carrying over the undelivered presidential promise the latest strategy made a virtue of dropping the commitment.

engagements, although not in a significant way. How we can deliver on this wish will remain under review,” it said – and that’s all it said – on the matter.

If the government will not act on its own stated objective in one strategy and then downgrades it to the status of a “wish” next time around, then that is hardly a promise, heck its not even a platitude!

Meanwhile, there is a push in Ireland to change the rules so that Irish citizens living in the North of Ireland – who find themselves in the same boat as the Irish diaspora overseas – can vote in elections to choose the president of Ireland.

Aontú – which describes itself as Ireland’s fastest growing political movement and a grassroots all-Ireland movement, dedicated to Life, Unity and Economic Justice for all – is behind the move. The Fianna Fail/Fine Gael coalition government said it would not oppose the bid.

It is crazy Irish nationals in the six counties of Northern Ireland are denied the right to vote for the president of Ireland, an unfair and unequal situation that should be rectified. But its also ridiculous the Irish diaspora has once more been abandoned by the Irish political and parliamentary system! Ireland lags decades behind most developed countries – including Australia – that offer their citizens living and working abroad the ability to cast a vote in domestic elections and referenda.

Ulster Slang....

T

he greatest part about writing this column for this fabulous little free mag is not only what to write but what to write about. I like to have a theme. There were many themes that came to mind this time around. I thought about the ‘Flight of the Earls’, the ‘Twalth’, the state of the world, an idiot in the U.S. and Ulster in the modern dilemmas. I wanted something with a happier bent, so none of those met my objective. I checked the ‘Ulster Reciter’.

(A crazy little book of Ballads, Poems and Recitations for Every Occasion). But after reading ‘The Emigrant’s Letter,’ I closed the book and looked up Dave Allen at Large.

I got a good belly laugh (as always) but nothing I could write about.

What about sculptures of peace? Like the ‘Beacon of Hope’ in Belfast. Other nicknames for the piece include Nuala with the Hula), the Belle on the Ball, the Doll with the Ball, (my favourite) the Whoore with the Hoop, (not so clever) the Angel of Harmony, (I don’t think so) the Thing with the Ring, (too common) Our Lady of Thanksgiving and the Angel of Thanksgiving. Nope! Giving that a miss also.

The rain in Belfast didn’t just fall; it asked you what you were doing out getting wet. It was a normal afternoon in the province; the kind of grey that made the "big light" in every front sitting room feel like the sun we never could see properly.

Michael sat in a booth in a pub near Sandy Row, nursing a pint of the dark stuff. Opposite him, his friend Miller was recounting a story about a goat, a Morris Minor, and a suspicious amount of exhaust fumes.

"I’m tellin’ ye, Mick," Miller wheezed, "the guard lost the plot. He thought we’d smothered the poor thing!".

Michael didn't crack a smile.

"Not much craic" he muttered, using the local catch-all for any mishap ranging from a burnt Ulster fry to the rusting of The Doll with the Ball.

The door swung open, admitting a gust of wind and a man soaking wet. Well, he would be. He was out and about in the rain. He looked

at the barman and announced, "I’ll give fifty quid to anyone who can drink ten pints of Guinness back-to-back.". He was obviously English, no quids in Ireland now. Only Euros!

Anyway, most men in Belfast at that time could perform such a feat every night of the week. Or so I have been led to believe.

The pub went silent. Perhaps it was the accent. A man in the corner, who had been halfway through a "poke" (an ice Shrigley cream, despite the weather), stood up and walked out without a word. Thirty minutes later, he returned, dripping wet but with a determined look on his face.

"Is that bet still on?" he asked.

The stranger nodded his assent. Five pints were lined up with the promise of another five on the way. The local man tore through them like a man possessed, finishing the last drop to a chorus of "boys-a-dear!" from the regulars and a ‘That’s me boy’ from Mick.

"That was absolutely incredible," the stranger said, handing over the money. "But if I may inquire, where did you go for those thirty or so minutes?"

The local wiped his mouth. "Oh, I had to go to The Club Bar down the street to make sure I could do it first.".

Miller let out a bark of laughter that could "melt glass," much like the local nun he often joked about. "That’s the thing about this place, Mick. We’re so busy laughing at the things that are bad, we forget to notice when things are actually alright.".

As they left, the rain hadn't stopped. Michael adjusted his coat. "Take that off," Miller advised. "You’ll not feel the good of it when you get home.".

Michael looked at him, then at the grey sky, and finally let out a small, sharp chuckle. "Right you are, mucker. Right you are.".

As I have told you often before, my father was from Co Meath. We did not talk with the Ulster slang in our household. My mother was a teacher, and not only did she not use Ulster slang, but she openly resented it and anyone who used it. I must have just picked it up in the street but, I certainly did not use it at home. Come to think of it, I rarely spoke at home. I DID

Below I have listed a few of the ones I particularly liked and remembered.

Ulster slang is famously fast, dry, and is often used as a form of "affectionate insults" or "slagging". Everything is "wee," the weather is always "baltic," and if you’re lucky, you might even have some "good craic".

• Craic: (pronounced "crack"): Fun, entertainment, or gossip. You might ask, "What’s the craic?" as a general greeting.

• Wee: Literally means "small," but is used as a filler for almost everything (e.g., "a wee cuppa," "a wee dander," “a wee dog,” “a wee thing”).

• Bout ye: A common, casual greeting meaning "How are you?" or "How's it going?".

• Dead on: Used to describe someone who is good-natured or to agree with something. It can also be highly sarcastic depending on the tone.

• Aye: Simply means "Yes".

My Uncle Jack (my mother’s brother, who lived in Belfast) used all these expressions. OK, I must admit; my father was not a huge fan of his.

• Eejit / Buck Eejit: A "silly" person or a complete fool, often used affectionately.

• Scundered: Most commonly means "embarrassed" or "mortified," though in some parts of Mid-Ulster, it can mean "annoyed".

• Yoke: A versatile word for an object or "thing" whose name you can't remember. Calling someone "some yoke" can also be a compliment.

Common Phrases & Reactions • Catch yourself on / Wise up: "Don't be so ridiculous" or "Get real".

• Wind yer neck in: A way of telling someone to shut up or mind their own business.

• Ats us nai: "That’s us now," typically said when a task is finished or something is sorted.

• Houl yer whisht: A polite (or not-sopolite) way to say "shut up" or be quiet. [ • Dander: A casual walk or stroll.

• Poke: An ice cream cone, usually soft served with a flake.

Steamin’: One of many terms for being very drunk.

• Banjaxed: Something that is broken or ruined beyond repair.

To see how Northern Irish slang fits into everyday life, imagine a typical interaction between two friends, Orla and Liam, meeting up on a cold afternoon in Donegal Square.

Liam: "How’s a bout ye, Orla wee girl. What’s the craic?"

Orla: "I’m foundered, Liam! It’s absolutely baltic out here. I’ve been standing here for donkey's years waiting for you."

Liam: "Wise up, I’m only five minutes late! I was just getting a wee poke from the shop."

Orla: "An ice cream? In this weather? You're a total buck eejit. Was it at least nice?"

Liam: "Sticking out.” After a pause for thought. “Dead on, so it was. Anyway, are we going for a wee dander or what?"

Orla: "Aye, let's go. Ats us nai."

If you didn’t get all that, ask Michael (Mick) what it was all about.

Now the first article I wrote about for the mag some seventeen years ago was titled The Great Ulster Breakfast. Well, I couldn’t think what else to write about!

• Ulster Fry: The king of Ulster meals. It is a hearty fried breakfast that must include soda bread or wheaten bread, and potato bread (farls). Unlike a "Full English," an Ulster fry prioritises these local breads and skips the beans and hash browns found elsewhere.

• Farl: A flatbread cut into four pieces (quadrants). You can have a soda farl or a potato farl.

• Vegetable Roll: Don't let the name fool •

"On the lash": Going out specifically to drink heavily.

• "In bits" / "In rag order": Used to describe either being very drunk or the state of your head during a severe hangover the next day.

Ulster has a vibrant mix of historic giants and innovative craft producers. While some brands like Guinness are shared across the island, many are distinct to the North, especially in the booming whiskey and gin sectors. Or so I am told or led to believe. The region is currently experiencing a "spirits renaissance," (in more ways than one) with several new distilleries opening in the last decade.

• Bushmills Irish Whiskey: Located in County Antrim, it is the world's oldest licensed whiskey distillery. It is famous for sticking to malted barley when others switched to corn.

• Hinch Distillery: A newer distillery in County Down that produces awardwinning triple-distilled whiskeys and Ninth Wave Gin. • McConnell’s Irish Whisky: (No relation as far as I know) One of Belfast's oldest brands (est. 1776), recently revived and now distilling in the historic Crumlin Road Gaol. It would be! I’m not having you on!

• The Copeland Distillery: Based in Donaghadee, they are known for coastalinspired gins and are currently maturing a new range of rums and whiskeys.

• Shortcross Gin: Produced at the Rademon Estate in Downpatrick, this was the first premium craft gin to be distilled in Ulster.

• Jawbox Gin: A small-batch Belfast gin famously paired with ginger ale and local honeycomb (Yellowman that I have mentioned before).

While Harp Lager was once the dominant local brand, the craft scene has exploded recently. Heavens Above. I might return for a wee holiday like. I hated Harp Lager all those years ago but there was no other choice. My local once introduced Thwaites. We called it ‘Throwing beer’. Yeah, the first time you bought it and had a swig, you threw it away or at someone you didn’t altogether like!

I do hope I brought a bit of a laugh or at least a smile to your face if you managed to get to read all this. As always, may your God go with you until the next time.

• Yellowman: A hard, yellow honeycomb toffee famously associated with the Ould Lammas Fair. A sure way to make many a dentist very happy (and very wealthy).

• Dulse: Edible dried seaweed, often eaten as a salty snack. Yuck, if I remember correctly.

• Bap: A large, soft bread roll. A "pastie bap" is a deep-fried patty in a roll.

• Fish Supper: The standard way to order fish and chips from the "chippy" • A Wee Cuppa / A Drap in yer Han: A cup of tea, the universal solution for any problem in Ulster! To be polite you should refuse it twice before heartily accepting it.

• Minerals: A term (often used by older generations) for soft drinks or fizzy drinks like 7-Up or Pepsi. Maybe coke.

The liquid kind.

• Carryout: Alcohol bought from an "offy" (off-license or bottle shop for any Aussie getting thus far in reading this) to be consumed at home.

• Buckfast (Bucky): A caffeinated tonic wine that holds a legendary (and notorious) status in local drinking culture.

Locals have hundreds of ways to describe being intoxicated. Common terms include Steamin’, Blocked, Stocious, Hammered, Plastered, and Balloobas.

Celebrating Our Juniors Indigenous Training Top Design

Earlier in April we had the pleasure of gifting a framed 2026 Indigenous training top to the amazing artist behind our design, Rachel Miller. Rachel is a very talented Aboriginal business owner who put together a number of design ideas for the club with the help of her son Dylan.

The design is inspired by Carramar, which means “shade of trees” in Noongar, symbolising our community through the trees and the vibrant colours that reflect our club’s growth. At the base of the artwork sits a family symbol, representing the strong foundation of our club, with stems

BY PAULA XIBERRAS It’s Friday and Emily Barnes thinks her hard work is over at least for the week, but she didn’t imagine what was going to greet her. Emily’s son is in trouble, in fact he’s been taken, and Emily must deliver a car to Gunpowder Creek, in the Western Australian outback with unknown cargo in the boot. If she doesn’t do it in the subscribed time Zach will receive a certain fate.

Added to the complexity of her mission, are highways of hurdles that meet her. Emily is a strong character made so by the love she has for her son. In a sense she is the model of normality turned into superhero of necessity. When I chatted to author Alex Dook, he said each chapter is written so it leaves Emily in a worse place than the previous, with yet another challenge to face.

The plot is tight and fast moving with readers barely having a chance to catch their breath, before another hurdle faces Emily.

Before the book was accepted by Echo Publishing, Alex had produced several manuscripts, and he was almost ready to believe it wasn’t going to happen, and then it did!

Alex tells me his second book is a stand-alone with something ‘different’. Gunpowder Creek

Ovation’s four stars bringing it home

family Silvie Paladino and Michael Cormick.

I spoke to the newbies, ahead of their Tasmanian tour. Silvie Paladino is no stranger to Tasmanians who watch the favourite performer every year on Carols by Candlelight and of course Silvie has performed with our own TSO and tells me she was “so happy to know Tassie was included in the tour.”

Something similar in Silvie and Michael’s story is that both didn’t seek out musical theatre, rather it chose them.

Silvie says her parents were from a humble immigrant family and her aspirations for a career was to be a hairdresser but that - thankfully for her fans - wasn’t to be. Silvie had another love growing up, that was singing for family occasions. At one of these occasions her uncle heard Silvie singing and impressed by her voice, decided singing lessons were the way to go. Before long, twelve-year-old Silvie was singing at wedding parties on Saturday nights, which she loved and she was earning money.

Then there was, ‘Young Talent Time’ in which she won a grand final.

Silvie says this was “the springboard to a career in music.”

It led to regular appearances on Bert Newton’s TV programs making her a familiar face to audiences and showcasing her talent.

Silvie says this career of over forty years “has been a blessing” balanced with marriage and two children and a sometimes-chaotic household! Silvie has found her people, her tribe in theatre, forging friendships, including one with the lady she shares the stage with, Marina Prior.

Ovation, Silvie tells me, will be a mix of “Solo duets, show tunes, from Les Mis, Beauty and the Beast and Phantom of the Opera, with Marina, some Italian opera with David and some contemporary with Michael.”

As well as ensemble pieces with her talented friends and what’s more some chat, although she says, the friends have been told to “pull back a bit on the chat.”

Michael reinforces the chat issue. He tells me the group of friend’s love chatting and having some friendly banter, but they can become a bit “like naughty school kids!”

Like Silvie, Michael tells me about his journey into musical theatre which was a surprise because he came from a family of five brothers and three sisters, “none of whom had a showbiz connection, which for him ‘came out of nowhere” after a performance on ‘New Faces with Bert Newton’. He went on to

play the original Beast with Rachel Beck and Hugh Jackman, with next stop the West End of London.

Michael says he loves the songs chosen for the duets and ensemble performances and the contemporising of some of the older songs he sings with Silvie. Interestingly. and somewhat sobering but joyous he laughs; “the four Ovation singers have over one hundred and seventy five years” experience in the business between them.

Michael says he loves the superpower of the group and indeed of music, that can translate meaning to an audience and the dynamic flow it creates, demonstrating the healing power of

music. On that note, Michael nominates ‘Bring him Home’ as his favourite song. He is looking forward

to bringing the music home to Tassie, Hobart and Launceston and may just stay over for a little holiday!

ERROL FLYNN

by PATRICIA O’BRIEN / ALLEN & UNWIN $36.99 Errol Flynn was arguably the greatest movie idol of the 1930s and 40s. It was Flynn who put the ‘swash’ into ‘swashbuckle’, mesmerizing the masses in 55 epic, costume, adventure films, such as The Charge of the Light Brigade (1936), Robin Hood (1938), and The Sea Hawk (1940), all made during Hollywood’s Golden Age. His on-screen swagger, smoldering sexuality, larger-than-life persona, remarkable good looks and physique endeared him to millions (especially females) across the world.

But perhaps Flynn’s greatest performance was reserved for his 1942 trial on charges of statutory rape. Born in Hobart in 1909, where his father, Theodore was appointed the first Professor of Biology at the University of Tasmania, Flynn spent a seemingly wayward childhood in Hobart, perhaps as a result of his parents tempestuous and troubled marriage.

(As an aside, Flynn’s former house was once owned by an eminent Irish, Hobart businessman, and yes, I have been in Flynn’s former bedroom). Between 1927 and 1933, Flynn sought to make his fortune in the New Guinea islands, where he managed copra and tobacco plantations and even briefly panned for gold. Spotted by French film director, Charles Chauvel, he was cast as Fletcher Christian in Chauvel’s In the Wake of the Bounty (1933). The film was not a success, but Flynn was smitten by acting bug, and bit parts on stage in England followed, before his role as Captain Blood (1935) catapulted him to stardom – and notoriety. On screen, Flynn was always ‘the gentleman’, but his time in New Guinea, cast a long shadow over his identity and imagination, shaping his desire 66 | THE IRISH SCENE

for sex with young girls. Three marriages ensued as Flynn became addicted not just to sex, but also to drugs and alcohol. In 1942, he faced rape charges brought against him by two teenage girls. Flynn denied the offences asserting that the girls were ‘gold diggers’ and merely after his money. The trial was a media sensation as crowds flocked to the court to catch a sight of the famous actor. According to O’Brien, the only jurors who wanted him convicted were two of the three men on the jury – all nine female members voted for his acquittal. By now, as a result of his reckless lifestyle, Flynn had developed serious health problems including tuberculosis and degenerating spinal discs. With his career and finances gone, he died in 1959 aged 50 in the company of his latest girlfriend, 17-year-old Beverly Aadland.

Their relationship had commenced two years earlier. While Flynn’s remarkable life spawned many biographies, O’Brien’s account is a meticulously researched and well written narrative uncovering many previously hidden aspects of Flynn’s life. She documents his visits to Belfast, where Theodore had landed the Chair of Zoology at Queen’s University, and how he sought to repair his parents faltering and unsteady marriage in the Northern Ireland capital. Flynn is revealed as a screen idol who often boasted about ‘his wicked, wicked ways’, while O’Brien exposes him as one of those few individuals who seemingly failed to acknowledge life’s restraints, and who behaved accordingly.

Lane specializes in women’s love-fiction, generally set in small, rural, Australian towns, now seemingly a burgeoning genre in national literature. Such is the popularity of rural romance novels, that over the last three years sales have increased by a whopping 49%, according to the Neilson Bookscan data. Arguably, novels

by Lane and other proponents such as Mandy Margo, Rachael Johns, Leonie Kelsall, may be propping up Australia’s current flatlining book market. No longer are rural romance novels relegated to the dark corners or bottom shelves of bookshops, all good bookstores now have a large section devoted to ‘romance’.

In fact, a number of dedicated romance bookstores, such as Sydney’s ‘Romancing’ have opened over the past few years. In line with expectations of the genre, Lane has produced an escapist, easy read, love tale with a ‘happy ever after’ ending.

FREMANTLE TO FREEDOM

BY FRED REA AND PETER MURPHY REVIEW BY BOB ROGERS This historic novel by Cork born Fred Rea and Dubliner Peter Murphy is another description of the infamous escape of six Fenian prisoners from Fremantle jail in 1876 more commonly known and the Catalpa Escape.

The difference with this latest to me is the extensive research undertaken to factually account the escape and the illustrations and photographs liberally spread throughout the 120-page book.

The account is given in the first person by the last survivor of this epic incident, one James McNally Wilson... born in 1836. He suffered the Great Famine and was instrumental in several uprisings before being imprisoned then transported for life t o “The Establishment” that was Fremantle prison.

He, and sixty-one others, were prisoners on the Hougoumont in January 1868.... the very last convict ship to Western Australia.

The novel describes in detail the inhumanities and persecutions

mounted on these poor unfortunates who fought for the freedom of Ireland from English tyranny.

The actual escape from Fremantle to Rockingham and the waiting barque Catalpa is captivating reading, then the long sea voyage to freedom in New York has the reader sailing with the exprisoners and crew along with the trials of a fourmonth sea voyage.

The authors extend the adventure of this escape, by including footnotes to explain the outcome of the mission and the eventual lives of the escapees in America.

The appendices also include the real cost of the Catalpa rescue with the financial accounts of the voyage which details just who supported the rescue mission.

There is even a story about the Catalpa song and its origins.

The extensive bibliography is very evident of the meticulous research undertaken to prove all the facts delivered in the story.

It is written in easy to manage chapters and liberally sprinkled with copies of manuscripts, illustrations, and photographs making easy reading. A pleasure to read and surely one for the library of all Irish historians.

Éire Óg going from strength to strength

ire Óg continues to grow across the Northern Suburbs, recently taking part in and winning the inaugural Captain George Anthony Cup, hosted by Na Fianna Catalpa in Baldivis at the beginning of April. It was a fantastic occasion within the wider Catalpa Festival, made even more special with the trophy presented by the family of Captain George Anthony.

We also competed in the recent Perth 7s and Fr Kelly Cup, marking a proud milestone as the first club in Western Australia to field men’s and ladies’ football teams alongside hurling and camogie. It was a significant moment for the club and one that has helped plant a flag for the future. We also held a Coffee, Craic & Camogie morning at Mullaloo Beach to promote the camogie team that attracted both old and new players to the sport.

The club will hold its AGM in May, where Éire Óg will formally transition from its foundation phase into a fully operational phase. This will include planning for our Junior Academy, which we hope to launch in August/September following the conclusion of the senior men’s and ladies’ championships.

There is plenty more in the pipeline, including plans to host a Poc Fada at a local venue this year as we continue promoting Gaelic games across the area.

Na Fianna Catalpa GAA commemorates Catalpa 150

N

a Fianna Catalpa GAA proudly hosted a fantastic day of hurling and football as part of the Catalpa Adventure Festival in Rockingham on Sunday April 5th. With perfect weather and a brilliant atmosphere, the day was packed with energy, skill, and tremendous support from the sidelines.

Catalpa claimed victory in a thrilling hurling contest, finishing 7-8 to 7-4. A

high-scoring, end-to-end battle that kept everyone on the edge of their seats.

In the football, it was Éire Óg who came out on top, securing the Captain George Anthony Cup with a 1-14 to 1-10 win. The cup was proudly presented afterwards by the great-grandson of Captain George Anthony himself, Mr. Jim Ryan from Boston, Massachusetts—adding a special and meaningful connection to the occasion.

No quarter asked, none given. A true war of attrition between two fully committed sides—thundering hits, relentless work rate, and fine margins deciding it at the final whistle. Our opponents capitalised on their frees, while we fell just short in that department. At this level, those small details make all the difference.

After the games, attention turned to Easter Sunday at the Catalpa Adventure Festival in Rockingham, where six of our members took part in a reenactment and storytelling of the Catalpa escape. Representing the six rescued Fenians, they rode out to freedom—bringing history to life and adding a powerful cultural dimension to the weekend.

Back on the sporting front, Na Fianna Catalpa’s senior men’s team have been in action across a busy April schedule. On April 11th, they competed in the Perth 7's, playing four strong games and earning a deserved measure of revenge with a win over Éire Óg.

The following week, on April 18th, the team took part in the Father Kelly Cup 15-a-side competition. This marked the club’s first ever

competitive 15-a-side campaign—a significant milestone and another proud step forward in the club’s continued growth.

Beyond the field, club members Trevor Dunne and Chris Doyle have been working tirelessly over the past 10 months to honour one of the 62 exiled Fenians laid to rest in Jarrahdale—John Donoghue. With the support of members of the Irish community, including Fred Rea and Colgan Industries, a memorial headstone has now been placed on his previously unmarked grave.

This work was marked with a commemoration and unveiling on April 26th at Jarrahdale Cemetery—another proud example of the role the club plays in preserving and celebrating Irish history within the local community.

Another key cultural pillar of the club is our Irish language programme. Classes are held every Tuesday at the Baldivis Sporting Complex, led by Maria Collins of the Cúpla Focal Crew. The programme continues to grow, with additional children’s classes running during the school holidays—helping to keep the language alive for the next generation.

Na Fianna Catalpa is more than just a Gaelic games club. We are a community built around Irish culture and history, proud to bring events like this to the south of Perth. We take part in all aspects of Irish life south of the river—and this weekend was just one example of what that means.

For the first time ever, an Australasia girls Gaelic football team will travel to Ireland to compete at Féile Peile na nÓg – one of the world’s most prestigious youth GAA tournaments.

The U15 girls team, featuring players from Young Melbourne (Victoria) and the Junior GAA Games WA, will take the field in Derry on Saturday 27 June for a once‑in‑a‑lifetime opportunity to represent our region.
