About Blas Blas na hEireann continues to celebrate the very best of Irish food and drink. In 2021 the awards had entries from producers in every county of Ireland competing to take home Gold, Silver, Bronze and Finalist places. Despite challenging circumstances this year we maintained our commitment to celebrating the very best in Irish food and drink. We feel that now, more than ever it is essential to shine a spotlight and give that all important clap on the back to the talented producers dotted around the island.
A trusted accreditation and mark of Irish quality Research has shown that the Blas accreditation has the highest recognition amongst Irish consumers and using the award logo on packs encourages shoppers to buy these products. It is their guarantee of a top quality Irish product.
Our Judges Our judges come from a range of food backgrounds; they are chefs, restaurateurs, academics, journalists, authors, food champions, caterers and enthusiastic home cooks. Retailers with a vested interest or producers who have entered the competition are never involved in the judging process.
Finding the very best Developed with UCC and the University of Copenhagen our judging process is now recognised as an industry ‘gold’ standard worldwide. Products entered are blind tasted and competition is extremely tough, and regardless of the number of entries there are only five finalists in each category. Blind tasting means that all packaging and identifying features are removed from products before being presented for judging. This creates a level playing field for products from both large and small producers.

THIS YEAR... We are delighted to share with you the 2021 Blas na hEireann finalists ahead of the announcements of the awards on 2nd of October. Now in their 14th year, the team at Blas na hÉireann have worked harder than ever this year to make sure the awards went ahead, moving the blind-tasting judging system from the campus in UCC to Dingle to work within Government guidelines and the constraints of social distancing. With the blueprint for this new system developed last year, the team were able to seamlessly ensure the judging was handled with the same care and attention as always. Especially important in a year where we have seen a record entry level from producers right across the island. “We’re delighted to announce the finalists for 2021 and chuffed to see so many new products being entered into Blas na hÉireann this year. Last year was new territory for us but the team here did tremendous work to make sure the awards went ahead and the sense of community that we experienced over the virtual awards event was just brilliant.” says Chairperson, Artie Clifford. “We saw a large increase in entries this year and these new producers have really raised the bar across all categories and will allow us to introduce new producers to the buyers and press whom we work with which is really exciting.”
Finalist stage Finalists are the top 5 entries in a category (generally there are just 5 finalists although in some cases if scoring is extremely close there can be more). The finalist stage has always been a very tough stage to reach, and producers have had success from promoting that they have reached this stage, putting them front and centre in the eyes of trade and press who are watching the finalist results . As such, when we made the change in 2020 to a single tasting we felt it was important to still celebrate our finalists. From the top scoring products in each category who are listed as finalists a Gold, Silver & Bronze winner will be announced
Awards The awards will be announced over the course of the day on October 2nd on the Blas website and across social media channels and while the Blas family will miss welcoming everyone to Dingle, the team and the wider Blas community will gather virtually and make sure #Blas2021 trends all day!
Judging & Results Traditionally Blas na hEireann has had two rounds of judging, a summer session and a finalist round as part of our weekend of events in October. Over the years we have seen that the ranking from one round of tasting to another remained the same. Essentially the finalist round has confirmed the first round of tasting. In 2020 with Covid restrictions in place we worked with UCC to confirm this and after the initial first round of judging, the top scoring products from several categories went through a second round of tasting, both in Dingle and at satellite venues across the country. In conjunction with UCC these results were studied and the findings showed that the results based on two entirely separate panels returned the exact same rankings. You can read more here) This year, with the confidence of the 2020 study, we have completed our judging and this scoring will be used to announce the winners on the 2nd of October.

Invest Northern Ireland has been a long-time sponsor of Blas na hEireann, Irish Food Awards, and greatly values the incredible partnership and friendship developed over the years with the Blas Team. We give our ongoing support to Blas since the awards are an extremely important and successful commercial platform year on year for many of our NI Food and Drink businesses. Blas is not however just about the award and one weekend in the calendar, it is a mechanism of support for the wider community of producers and offers that ongoing support throughout the year. The awards not only raise the profile of products manufactured in NI and generate positive media coverage but potentially lead to additional sales of NI food and drink. unprecedented impact of Covid-19, Northern Ireland Food and Drink is still open for business. Over the last eighteen months, Invest NI has adapted how we provide support to our companies. We have developed and continue to host a series of successful webinars including ‘Setting up an E-commerce Platform’, ‘Negotiations’ and ‘Account Management’ Our colleagues in the Consumer Insights team have also continued to be creative and deliver 1:1 market intelligence clinics on line. In addition, whilst we have not been able to meet with key retail and foodservice customers in the normal way, enhanced digital platforms enable us to maintain these invaluable relationships. We have now hosted eight virtual ‘Meet the Buyer’ events incorporating a cookery demo by local chef, Paula McIntyre, utilising over seventy local food and drink products, samples of which had been couriered in advance to numerous key buyers, within the Irish retail and foodservice sectors. We are delighted to be able to commence some face to face activity once again but will also continue with a programme of virtual events. over the next six months that will enable buyers, food writers and bloggers to engage, familiarise themselves with the Northern Ireland Food and Drink offering and build relationships.

The company was established by Joseph Dunn in 1822 after he took a vow of abstinence from alcohol and in turn converted his public house into a fish mongers. From these early beginnings, the Dunns family business grew from strength to strength and overtime, became synonymous in Ireland with quality and freshness. The name Dunns is linked forever to the novels of James Joyce when Mr. Daudilous went to Dunns to buy his Christmas turkey. Through the centuries, the company diversified as required and thus changed location several times as each premises became out- dated due to the increasing demands placed upon the company year by year. Finally the company settled in its current state of the art facility in Finglas where it has continued to thrive until this day. Our customers range from domestic to international.
