On 26th September on behalf of you our members, the industry associations of IRHACE, CCCANZ and RLNZ made a submission on the refrigerant licensing system. We support a licensing system and feel that this is a great step forward for our industry. The RLNZ Board is concerned about the perceived lack of consideration for training to upskill people to achieve this licensing system and our submission addresses these concerns.

Realcold New Zealand Ltd was proud to be nominated as a finalist for the TVNZ New Zealand Marketing Awards 2022. We entered the ‘Excellence in B2B Marketing strategy” with our Gree Ultimate Degrees Incentive programme.

This year Marketing Awards celebration were held on the 14th of September at Spark Arena here in Auckland.

Realcold NZ Ltd has been the distributor of the Gree brand of heat pumps in New Zealand for 20 years. The Gree range of heat pumps is sold alongside our air conditioning accessories and commercial refrigeration equipment. Beijer Ref, the new owners of Realcold NZ saw the potential to grow the brand and to become more mainstream. However, in an environment with heavy competition and already well-established house-hold brands, it was realised that to obtain mainstream consumer recognition would require significant financial investment, something that was not available for a brand still finding its foothold in the market. There was a need to increase the sales force through installer engagement, commitment and direct communication which meant developing a business-to-business platform that would incentivise our customers’ long-term commitment and reward the Gree brand with growth. This resulted in the development of ‘Ultimate Degrees’ Being able to watch the rapid growth of the Gree brand over the last 5 years and see first hand an increased level of trust and engagement from our customers through this platform has been such a fantastic journey.

Ultimate Degrees is an incentive programme developed by Realcold and in collaboration with our marketing partner, OneNineFive Ltd. Our goal was to create a true partnership with our dealership network, to provide a foundation for increasing sales while providing a platform for product updates, promoting events and brand recognition whilst rewarding our customers who reach certain targeted goals with something more than a discount or a rebate, but a reward that would cement lifelong memories anchored around travel experiences brought to them by Gree NZ. The goal from the start was to increase sales and brand awareness through channel engagement, by increasing customer loyalty and reduce customer churn. Targets were based on growing a customer’s individual spend, to one of two tiers, to which if targets were met, Dealers would be invited to one of Ultimate Degrees group travel experiences.

An additional level was added that would allow a Dealer to move between our Value and Premium dealer groups.

It has been a wish of mine to bring a program like this to the Gree network. Thanks to the support from senior Management, we have been able to deliver a 5-star program that has exceeded our wildest expectations.

Now in its 3rd year running, Ultimate Degrees has been a resounding success, with sales exceeding expectation.

OneNineFive have been a key partner within the Ultimate Degrees programme, providing the web portal, designing, and implementing the travel experiences. Brand awareness and market penetration have grown significantly, while customer churn has decreased. This has allowed Gree to double its Dealer network year on year for the last two years.

This has made Gree a much more familiar brand in the new Zealand marketplace and has force others to rethink their view on the Gree brand.

While the Ultimate Degrees Programme did not win on the night, being a finalist amongst top 50 NZX companies was still a result for Gree NZ. This recognition has come about from all the hard work and passion our talented staff and marketing partner, One Nine Five have brought to this program.

CAREL ANNOUNCEMENT CAREL acquires 100% of the share capital of Klingenburg GmbH and Klingenburg International Sp. Z.o.o.

Brugine, 6 September 2022 – CAREL Industries S.p.A. announces the acquisition of 100% of the share capital of Klingenburg GmbH and Klingenburg International Sp. Z.o.o., leading producers of a wide range of products used mainly for heat recovery in ventilation and humidification systems, adiabatic cooling and air purification.

The two companies are European leaders in the production and sale of rotary and plate heat exchangers, essential elements in the recovery of heat and therefore in guaranteeing significant energy savings in ventilation systems. In particular, the main advantages of rotary technology, making up most of Klingenburg’s business (and for which also benefit from product and production process patents), are associated with the ability to treat large amounts of air while maintaining compactness and high efficiency of the component. They are used in multiple applications: in addition to being used in air handling units in residential and commercial buildings, the rotary heat exchangers are widely used in various industrial processes. Klingenburg also offers solutions for humidification (mainly for indirect adiabatic cooling) and the sanification of the air through UV technology, together with services in support of product solutions offered.

The companies employ around 200 employees and have two production facilities available, one is in Germany and one in Poland. They boast a direct commercial presence also in the United Kingdom, in Spain and in the United States.

Aggregated revenues at 31 December 2021 amount to approximately Euro 39.1 million with an EBITDA of Euro 2.4 million and net cash of Euro 4.8 million.

The transaction rationale is attributable, first, to the implementation of one of the main cornerstones of the Group’s strategy, calling for a growth path through M&A, also through products complementary in applications of reference.

Furthermore, it aims at strengthening CAREL’s positioning in the industry of air handling units, joining the acquisitions of Recuperator S.p.A. and Enginia S.r.l, completed respectively in 2018 and 2021, responding to the same logic.

The high degree of complementarity between Recuperator and Klingenburg in relation to the respective technologies of specialisation (plate exchangers for Recuperator and rotary for Klingenburg) and to the application areas will allow CAREL to develop industrial and commercial synergies, resulting in holding a top-level role in such sector, in Europe and also outside continental boundaries, confirming at the same time its ability to offer itself always more as sole supplier of complete systems of air treatment units.

The effects of the transaction also reflect positively on Klingenburg, who will benefit from an improved competitive positioning and investment capability, in addition to a particularly advanced technological know-how. To this, the global footprint of the CAREL Group is added, as well as its extensive customer base, which will open new markets and new geographies with the possibility of producing in the United States.

REGISTER NOW The practical assessment for the Approved Filler A1 and A2/A2L has been performed and tested by various technicians, apprentices and RLNZ Approved verifiers. RLNZ is preparing a video to demonstrate what is required for the practical assessment which is due to be released late September early October.

The next step is finalising our verifier network which is already happening behind the scenes so that we can firstly service the centres of Auckland and Christchurch and our CCCANZ companies. This will be followed in due course by other centres in New Zealand.

PREPARING FOR THE PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT You are required to demonstrate knowledge, skills and experience of the refrigerant recovery procedures presented to you on the day of the practical assessment. This will include the following: 1.

Special note: 1. No formula are provided – you are expected to completely understand the calculation methods.

Overalls or full-length cotton clothing, Hi-Viz, protective eyewear, protective footwear, hearing protection and gloves.

Materials and equipment

Gauge manifold and hoses, thermometer, P/T chart or application, recovery plant, refrigerant scales, recovery cylinder, LOTO resources, Big-blue.

Health and Safety

Health & Safety requirements are paramount prior to commencing the practical assessment, you must follow instructions given by the assessor during the practical demonstration.

Number of attempts

You will receive only one attempt for this assessment.

Should your attempt be not satisfactory, the verifier/ assessor will discuss the deficiencies with you. You will have to schedule and pay for a second attempt through the verifier.

Should your second attempt be unsuccessful, or you have made critical failures, you will be required to re-enrol in the theory A1 course module.

Assessment Criteria

The verifier/assessor will be observing your ability to demonstrate the key skills and knowledge detailed in the observation checklist that is based on the RLNZ Safe Work Procedure and the knowledge gained in the online course module.

Critical point failure

The assessment includes “critical point” failures which indicate that you are yet competent for practical assessment. Your verifier or assessor will discuss these with you during the assessment if they arise. In this case you will be asked to cease the assessment.

MBIE CONSULTATION

Licensing system for refrigeration, heating and air conditioning technicians

IRHACE, CCCANZ and RLNZ are committed to supporting industry towards achieving best practice for all HVAC&R technicians and engineers.

Our industry associations of IRHACE, CCCANZ, RLNZ and RPGNZ requested MBIE to run a webinar for all our members on the upcoming consultation on Tuesday 13th September with Nick Mercer, MBIE’s Senior Health and Safety Policy Advisor.

IRHACE/CCCANZ/RLNZ have forwarded their submission to MBIE which is focused on costs and training to support this new system. The industry associations along with RPGNZ have agreed on a definition that we have recommended as follows: “Commercial or Industrial.”

Commercial or Industrial refrigeration or air conditioning systems refer to any pressure equipment, plant, or appliance, permanent or temporary, installed within the occupancy categories established in AS/NZ Standard 5149.1:2016 Clause 5.1 table 1. Or requires the installation of interconnecting refrigeration pressure pipework and mechanical joints, Exemption: “Light commercial and domestic.”

“Light commercial and domestic” refrigeration or air conditioning systems refer to any pressure equipment, plant, or appliance that is hermetically sealed (with no mechanical joints or pipework installation) and is contained in parts that are not permanently connected to a power supply and located outside the occupancy categories established in AS/NZ Standard 5149.1:2016 Clause 5.1 table 1

ANNOUNCE COLLABORATION IN TECHNICAL EDUCATION IRHACE and CCCANZ supported by RLNZ promote the advancement of training and education in the HVAC&R industry.

The peak industry bodies have announced their collaboration in releasing a new initiative initially for CCCANZ companies.

IRHACE released the HVAC&R industry CPD programme in early 2022 specifically to provide a level of technical education - a first in our industry.

“We wanted to provide a platform that everyone within the HVAC&R industry could contribute to for the betterment of training and education”, says Mark Meyer, IRHACE President.

“IRHACE Members receive access to the platform and gain CPD points as part of their membership benefits and they also have the opportunity as experts in their field to contribute to this platform. Recent contributions have come from the Auckland University, M. IRHACE and F. IRHACE Members as well as other industry experts. IRHACE has 500+ members that are highly qualified in the HVAC&R industry and/or have over ten years working experience with a minimum of five years in a position of responsibility”.

AUTOMATIC ENERGY SAVINGS WITH THE NEW AIRTOUCH 5

The bar has been raised in smart home air conditioning with AirTouch 5, a new controller with a stunning design and a range of industry first features to help homeowners monitor and save energy when air conditioning their homes with ducted reverse cycle systems. Able to offer integrated control of up to 8 ducted or VRF units and 16 zones, AirTouch 5 is an all-in-one climate controller that can also be a hub for other smart home devices.

‘For us it was never about just making a touch screen with WiFi capability to link to a phone app and calling it smart,’ says Adam Connell from AirTouch, ‘We decided to create a controller that homeowners wanted because it can give them the real benefit of saving energy when air conditioning their homes. It also has the added bonus of looking fantastic on their wall, with an interface that makes sense straight away.’

AirTouch 5 offers Weather Adaption, a smart feature to adjust the air conditioning with the weather to help improve comfort and energy savings. It’s even clever enough to realise when you don’t need to run the air conditioning based on your local weather and turns the system off for you automatically.

Another smart feature for families is Energy Wastage Alerts, where AirTouch can detect if a door or window has been left open on a winter’s day because of a sudden drop in temperature and send an alert to your smartphone. And on those busy mornings when everyone needs to leave in a hurry, don’t worry about forgetting to turn the air conditioning off because with built in Geofencing, AirTouch can remind users that they are leaving home, and may want to turn off their system.

But probably the cleverest tools in AirTouch’s energy saving arsenal are the new Intelligent Temperature Sensors. AirTouch takes zone control to the next level with the option for wireless temperature sensors that monitor the temperatures in each zone, and give AirTouch real-time feedback so the system maintains the chosen set point and doesn’t waste conditioned air unnecessarily. ‘You wouldn’t have just one light switch for the entire house. We believe that air conditioning shouldn’t be any different,’ says Connell, ‘Ultimately more sensors equals more savings, comfort and control of the home climate.’

AirTouch is a great option for multi-storey installations because it is able to control up to 8 units, and the interface makes controlling them all easy from multiple consoles upstairs and downstairs, or any user’s Android or iOS smartphones. For an installer, it really doesn’t take any extra time to install because the AirTouch panel can be the main unit and zone controller.

Another first for smart controllers is that AirTouch offers a style to suit any home with a new theme selection tool.

‘We’ve built in the option for users to choose any interface theme they want for their controller.’ Light, dark, any colour to work with your home’s décor is available, as well as the option to just have a beautiful photo or just upload a favourite family pic. ‘There is definingly a style to suit anyone’s home.’

AirTouch 5 is ready for greater things, with the developers constantly adding more smart home automation features available through software updates. Currently, AirTouch integrates with the Zimi smart home components, consisting of smart light switches, power points, ceiling fans, garage doors and more. With control on the AirTouch console and dedicated smartphone app, ‘Zimi lets you control your lights, power and garage doors from anywhere,’ says Connell, ‘A lot of systems out there want to lead you down a path of gadgets that lock users into closed systems. We decided to challenge that with an open system which continuously improves, and that slots into how users want to use their chosen smart home automation products.’

The development team behind AirTouch 5 are very aware of the need for security with home automation devices. That is why it currently runs on Android 11 and is a Google GMS Certified device. ‘We want users to be able to trust AirTouch to be the hub for smart home and lifestyle devices to do everything you need from one place,’ Connell continues, ‘So quality programming, safety and security is important to us, right down to the privacy cover over the camera for use with things like video doorbells and intercoms.’

Setting a new standard in smart home control, AirTouch 5 has raised the bar, and can integrate with most leading ducted reverse cycle air conditioning brands, so it can add value to almost any new or existing home.

MEMBER PROFILES ALAN SKINNER

M.IRHACE since 1973 F.IRHACE since 1985 REA Refrigeration 1985 (retired this year) I started work in 1961 as an apprentice in the engineering workshop of the N.Z. Post and Telegraph in Auckland. The purpose of this workshop was to provide all the essential mechanical requirements for the 420 Post Offices and Telephone Exchanges in the Auckland area. Our apprenticeship was for 5 years, and we were required to attend day and night school classes for 3 years sitting the Fitting Turning and machining examinations. We did not receive any formal training in A/C or Refrigeration, nor any about the boiler hot water systems. You just learnt this on the job and from the tradesman (also untrained) and by asking questions.

By 1975 I held the position of Building Services Overseer and was asked to write and run a course on A/C as it applied to our buildings for our engineers throughout the country. I wrote a course and made a portable A/C training unit that I could put into various fault modes. This unit had a glass evaporator coil where the results of changes to settings could be seen. These courses were run in 1976. As a result of these courses and my name “getting out there” I received a number of offers of employment and eventually accepted one at Refrigeration Engineering Co in Auckland. in 1977. Until retirement in in 2010 time was spent at other refrigeration companies and also a period of 11 years running the engineering workshop for the Waitemata Electric Power Board.

CHARLES LAWRENCE There were only two jobs in the NZ Herald. I took the second one. McAlpine Refrigeration North Shore Ltd. Jim Ferguson was my manager. This started the association with NZIRACE in 1967. I became a service member in 1971. Later, I was the Auckland secretary for about three years and then a committee member. About eleven years in total and finished when we combined for IRHACE. Ted Jaggard being the last chairman.

This industry has evolved through both advanced technology and the global warming issues. The paperwork and staying compliant is not for the faint hearted. I miss the times when you went to service beer lines at the hotels. After adjusting the Danfoss CP valve, you got a free beer which you checked with your mercury thermometer; about 40-42 Fahrenheit. I thank all the people who helped me. That includes the ones who I did not acknowledge then. Age has made me realize belatedly that you all helped me survive this challenging career.

MEMBER PROFILES IAN MACDONALD One could say I was born into the Refrigeration World as my late father started a Refrigeration Business in 1938 the year I was born. He went on to establish AW MACDONALD LTD in 1947 which grew into a substantial business manufacturing commercial & domestic refrigeration equipment together with service and installation work.

At a very young age I would tag along with him to callouts measuring jobs etc Refrigerants of the day were Sulphur Dioxide-Methyl Chloride-Ammonia-Freon 12 very challenging for service people. I joined the company as an apprentice in 1954 serving 9000hrs (1000hr reduction for School Cert) attending night school at Seddon Tech for basic engineering,refrigeration & electrical tuition. Our business was originally based in Freeman’s Bay and in 1968 moved to new premises in Richmond Road Grey Lynn.

Unfortunately, my father passed away the following year. I must say he was one of the true Pioneers of the Refrigeration industry in New Zealand.

My son Fraser followed in my footsteps accompanying me @ a very young age to callouts etc. He gained an (NZCE-HVAC) and joined the company in 1985. We continued manufacturing commercial equipment, service & installation work until 2016. While sad to cease trading after 78 years the flood of imported products and the challenges facing the industry, we felt it was the correct decision.

I must say I enjoyed my years in the industry had some very loyal staff made a number of good friends and many satisfied clients. We have always supported the Institute and the members who have given so much to the industry over the years. With the raft of Legislation and Regulations of late they need all the support they can get from members.

WALLY RICE In the late 1960s I was accepted as an apprentice in refrigeration at Fisher and Paykel, Mount Wellington. The apprenticeship covered all aspects of appliance servicing and manufacture, and later training was tailored to the commercial side of servicing. The next step forward was at Fisher and Paykel Engineering where I received a thorough training in refrigeration and air conditioning. Apprenticeship training was all encompassing, including electrical, sheet metal work, component manufacture, installation, commissioning, servicing, design, and drafting. As part of the Fisher and Paykel culture, apprentices were sponsored for an Outward Bound Course which encouraged individuals to see how far they could push themselves, and to work as a team.

In 1970, it was an unexpected honour to be accredited with “Best Third and Fourth Year Apprentice Award” by the then NZ Institute of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (Inc). The core values and thorough training received in those early years have stood me in good stead throughout my life. I am grateful for the opportunities I received.
