Whenyou’reatthesupermarket,you’relikely thinkingmostaboutyourshoppinglist–notthe systemskeepingtheairandgroceriesfresh. ButforDavidEverett,Directorof EverettConsulting, thosesystemsaretheheartofaprojectthat’s beenthreeyearsinthemaking.Since2022, EverettConsulting hasledthemechanicaland refrigerationdesignforthenewPak’nSaveinEast Auckland,deliveringastorethat’sassustainable asitisvitaltothecommunity.

“Wewereengagedincarryingouttherefrigeration andmechanicaldesign,startingwithpreliminary designanddevelopment,”saysDavid.Histeam workedalongsideabroadergroupofconsultants, managingeverythingfromtenderstoinstallation. “Refrigerationandmechanicalarecompletely separatecontracts.Wedesignedthemseparately butoversawboth–projectmanagingthe

“It’senergy-efficientandusesthelatest technology,”saysDavid.Packedwithcontrol systems,itkeepspoweruselowwhileensuringthe coldchainstaysstrong–importantlyforshoppers, thismeansfooditemslikemilkandvegetablesare keptchilled.ThestorealsofeaturesanFTE(Full TranscriticalEfficiency)system,acleveraddition thatboostsefficiencyfurtherbyreducingthe energyneededintheevaporators.Thislowers runningcostswithoutcompromisingquality.

“ThisisatypicalsystemforaPak’nSave,butitwas ourfirsttimedeliveringitfortheminparticular,” sharesDavid,withEverettConsultingoften workingwithvarioussupermarketsacross thecountry.

Theprojectwasn’tjustaboutinstallingequipment, itwasabouttailoringasolutionforaspecificneed. NowthethirdlargestPak’nSaveintheNorthIsland, theEastAucklandstoreisexpectedtoattractnew customersfromthesurroundingareas.“They’re anticipatingthatthestoreshoulddowell,andso theyshould.It’sanewlydesigned,efficientstore that’scost-competitive.Attheendoftheday, it’sgoingtoprovideagreatservicetothe localcommunity.”

INDUSTRYEXPERTISE

Bigprojectslikethisunderstandablycomewith challenges,butforDavidandhisteam,nothing herewasoutoftheordinary.“Mostofit’sjustan averageday,”hesays.“There’salwayshurdles witheveryjob.”

Muchofthissuccessisattributedtocollaboration andstrongcommunication.

“There’salotofcoordinationinvolvedwithother consultantstooptimisethesystemandreduce clashes,”explainsDavid.Byaligningeveryone’s scopeofwork,theteamminimiseddelaysand droveefficienciesthatmadetheinstallation smootherandmorecost-effective.

AkeypieceofadvicefromDavidforfutureclients istogetprofessionalsinvolvedearlyon.Bringing expertsinatthestartcanminimiseproblems beforetheysnowball,savingtimeandmoney. It’sastrategythatpaidoffhere,withaseamless transitionfromdesigntooperation.

Theresultisastorebuiltfromthegroundupto balanceperformanceandpracticality.Fromthe refrigerationkeepingfreezershummingtothe mechanicalsystemsensuringacomfortable shoppingenvironment,everydetailwasfine-tuned.

FONKONZperformedtherefrigerationinstallation, withACSLGroupresponsibleforthemechanicalair conditioninginstallation.Temperzonealsoplayed akeyrole,andwillbesharingmoreabouttheir involvementattheupcomingHVAC&RTechnical StageatHVAC&RHubinJuly.

Mechanicalbuildingservices,refrigeration,andairconditioning arecriticalyetoftenunder-appreciateddisciplines.

Thesetradesareessentialtothefunctionalityof buildingsandsystemsworldwide,andrepresent ablendofinnovationandpracticalitythatshapes theenvironmentsweliveandworkin.

However,despitetheirimportance,thetradesin oursectorarefrequentlyovershadowedbymore commonlyrecognisedpathwayssuchascarpentry, plumbing,andelectricalwork.Thishasresulted inasignificantskillsshortageforHVAC&Rin NewZealand,withindustryexpertshighlighting apressingneedforthistochange–startingwith encouragingschoolleaverstoexploretrade careerswithinthefield.

Tradescoveradiverserangeofspecialisations, includingfabrication,mechanicalengineering,and maintenanceengineering,alongsideHVAC&R,plus more.Thisvarietymakesitanappealingchoicefor hands-onindividualswhoenjoyproblem-solving andunderstandinghowsystemsoperate.For studentsdrawntoelectricalwork,workingwithair conditioningandrefrigerationcanbeanidealfit.

However,thesetraderoutesremainlargelyhidden fromview,despitetheirvitalroleinmodern infrastructure.Increasedexposurethroughschools couldbolstertheindustry’sworkforceandaddress

resourcechallenges,ensuringasteadypipeline oftalent.

Collaborationbetweenindustryandeducationis provingtobeagame-changer.

Effortsbybusinessesandtrainingprovidersare helpingbridgethegap,introducinghighschool studentstothepossibilitieswithintrades.

Theseinitiativesaimtobroadenperspectives, showingyoungpeoplethattradesextendfar beyondthetraditionaltrioofbuilding,plumbing, andelectricalwork.Byengagingwithstudents directly,companiesaredemystifyingthesector andhighlightingitspotential.

Farfrombeingafallbackoption,tradesoffer structuredpathwaystorewardingcareersin growing,forward-thinkingindustries.

Astandoutadvantageistheabilitytoearnan incomewhiletraining,allowingapprenticesto graduatedebt-free.Uponcompletion,graduates arehighlysoughtafter,withopportunitiesranging fromemploymentinestablishedfirmstolaunching theirownventures.

Astatehousetransformation

Lastyearwesharedthein-progresstransformationofa1970sstate houseintoanenergy-efficiencyhomewithaHomestarLevel7 accreditation.Here’showtheprojectwent.

Settobedemolished,theex-statehouseturned intoaprojectforlevel3BCITOTradeAcademy studentsatOneTreeHillCollege.The1970s buildingwasacquiredfor$1withover$300,000 ofbuildingmaterialdonatedtomakethe transformationpossible.

Simxwasoneofthesponsorsinthisproject, providingaventilationsystemforthestudents toinstall.

Initially,aMultiVentsystemwasspecified,butas theprojectdeveloped,theSimxteamidentified thatamoreadvancedhomeventilationsystem wasneededtomeettheproject’sgoalsanddeliver thebestoutcomefortheenduser.

Duringthedesignphase,Simxcollaboratedwith HomestardesignerandassessorSarahElickerto ensurecompliancewiththetargetedHomestar Level7rating.

“Theprojecthadseveralcomplicationswehad toovercome.Wehadtomakeassumptions regardingfactorslikebuildingorientation(asthe homeisatransportablehomesowecouldnot knowitsfinaldestination)andthehome airtightness(airtightnessbynatureisonly

confirmedoncompletionofajobanddiffers dependingonmethodologyused),aswellaswork aroundfixedelementstypicalofarenovation,such asthewindowscaleandwallthickness.”

Thisledtothedecisionthatacontinuous mechanicalextractionsystemmaynotbe sufficientforthestandardtheprojectwasaiming toreach.

“Assuch,werecommendedandprovidedaMVHR (mechanicalventilationwithheatrecovery) system,theSmartVentBalance,whichwasmore suitableforreachingaHomestarLevel7rating giventhehome’scircumstances.Thesystemitself wasinstalledsmoothlybyPCIElectrical,whoare SmartVentAccreditedInstallersspecialisingin heatrecoverysystems,andintegratedwitha Daikinductedheatpump.Whileprojectconstraints meantwecouldn’tprovidedirectadvicetothe students,we’reconfidentthatthesystemchanges duringthedesignprocesshavegiventheminsight intotheroleofventilation–particularlyinhowit addressessummeroverheating.”

Thissystemprovedtobetherightchoicewiththe levelofairtightnessachieved.

“Thehomestartedat19ACH,constructionbrought itdownto3.6ACH,andtheteamatAeromanaged topullthatdownevenfurtherto0.81ACH.”

TheSmartVentBalancewillworkwellinanykind ofhome,butforoptimalperformance,additional air-tightnessmeasuresshouldbeundertaken. Thiscouldbeassimpleasimprovinginsulation orinstallingdoubleglazing,orascomplexas installinganairbarriersystem.Improvingair tightnessmeanslessenergyislosttonaturalair infiltration,improvingtheefficiencyofthesystem’s heatrecoverycore.

“Simxisthrilledwithhowsuccessfultheproject hasbeen,andisgratefultobeabletosupportsuch anamazinginitiative.”

AsNewZealandmovestowardsamore sustainable,andairtight,housingmodel,Simx believesthatNewZealandwillfollowthepathof manyothercountries.

“Webelievethechangeswillinvolvemandating greaterattentiontopassiveventilationsolutions alongsiderulingsontheapplicationofextraction (bothcontinuousandintermittent).Thiswill provideguidanceforthepassiveventilation penetrationsrequiredtoprovidesufficientmake upairfordifferentairvolumes.

“Thesechangeswillimpactthefuturechoiceof ventilationstylesaspeoplewilldecidebetween negativeandbalancedpressurebasedonthe importancetheyplaceoncomfortandefficiency.”

NowboastingahigherHomestarratingthanmost newbuilds,thisrenovationisamasterclassin whatcanbeachievedwiththerightknowledge, designandproducts.

“We’reconfidentthatthesystem changesduringthedesignprocess havegiventheminsightintothe roleofventilation.”

MOREABOUTMVHRSYSTEMS

MVHRsystemsaregreatforcost effectivenessinthelongrun,particularly incolderregions.Theheatingcost savingsfrominstalling anMVHRsystemoveratraditional ventilationsystemwilleventuallyleadto thesystem‘payingforitself’afterafew years.

Foraddedbenefit,theSmartVentBalance canextractairfromwetrooms.This meansyoucanrecovertheheatfromthe warm,humidshowerair,anduseitto tempertherestofyourhome.

HeatwaveMechanicalhasbeenworkingonan importantupgradeatStarshipChildren’sHospital, involvingvariousair-handlingunits(AHUs).The goalistoimproveresilienceandreplaceolder unitswithnew,high-specsystemsfortheclinical wardsandoperatingtheatres.

Thisprojectcomeswithsomechallenges. ThefirstwastransportingthenewAHUstothe roofofStarshipHospitalwithoutdisrupting hospitaloperations,whichinvolvedahelicopterlift –withmoretofollow.Anotherkeychallengehas beenensuringthathospitaloperationscontinue smoothlythroughouttheupgrade.Thisrequires usingtemporaryAHUsandfollowingacarefully plannedsequenceofworktoreplacetheAHUsand fanswhileminimisingdisruption,allwhileworking withinthelimitedspaceoftheplantrooms.

Recently,A-GasRapidRecoverypartneredwith EquansNewZealandtocompleteasupermarket refrigerantrecoveryprojectinMeadowlands.Inthe firstoftwostages,370kgofhighglobalwarming potentialrefrigerantwasremovedfromtwo decommissionedrefrigerationsystems.

Despiteheavyrainthroughouttheday,the teamworkedsafelyandefficiently,responsibly managingtheequivalentof675.25tonnesofCO2e andhelpingthesupermarketstayontrackwithits systemupgradeschedule.

SkyCity’srestaurantproductionfacilityrecently underwentamajorrefurbishment.FONKONZ designedandbuiltstate-of-the-artcoldrooms andblastchiller/freezersusingtranscriticalCO2 technology,ensuringenergyefficiency,aminimal carbonfootprint,andafuture-proofeddesign.

NMEGrouphasbeenhardatworkwithitslatest projectat61MolesworthStreet,Wellington.

Theteamisensuringallprotocolsarefollowedto keepsitesafe,withtheprojectrunningsmoothly thankstoLTMcGuinness.

Aguidetoseismic non-structuralelements forbuildingservices

PrashantPatelshareshisknowledgeinachievingNSEforbuildings inNewZealand.

ThestructureofanybuildinginNewZealandis governedbytheBuildingActandNZBuildingCode B1–Structure.WehaveourownNZStandard 1170–StructuralDesignActions,particularlypart 5:2004whichoutlinestheEarthquakeActions–NewZealand.Themainreasontorefertothese standardsistodeterminetheUltimateLimitState (Eu)andServiceabilityLimitState(Es).

Whentouchingonthenon-seismicelements(NSE) ofastructuresystem,itfallsunderNZS4219:2009 –SeismicPerformanceofEngineeringSystemsin Buildings.Thisstandardisforspecificdesignof theNSEofthestructureelements.However,it doesn’tcoveralltypesoffireandmechanical services.Suchasbutnotlimitedto:

1.FireSprinklerSystem

2.SuspendedCeilings

ThisstandardisfreelyavailableontheStandards NewZealandwebsite.Istronglyrecommendall servicecontractorstoreadthroughthisstandard asitprovidessomegreatexamplesandthresholds regardingseismicbracings.

Thesearejustsomeoftheexamplesandthey havetheirownstandardstocomplywiththeNZBC B1andtheNSEofanystructureinNewZealand.

AsperNZS4219:2009,therearetwopathwaysto achieveNSEforanytypeofbuilding,

1.SPECIFICDESIGNMETHOD

Suchdesignsaredraftedbyexperiencedstructural engineerssuchasCPEngasmostofthemfall undereitherASorVMoftheNZBCB1.Thesetypes ofdesigncouldhavegenericapproachesonthe NSEcomponentsfromtheexperienceofthe registeredengineer.

2.NON-SPECIFICDESIGNMETHOD

SuchdesignscouldbedonebyNSEspecialists aswellasbythebuildingservicesengineerssuch asMechanicalEngineerorFireEngineer.Mostof theNSEdesignsouttherearedonethisway, determiningthedifferentparametersofthebuilding andfinallycalculatingtherequiredrestraintforces foralloftheNSEcomponentsinquestion.

GuidancehasbeenprovidedbyBRANZonthe responsibilitiesassociatedwiththeproducer statements.(Seetableonright.)

Consideringthetable,acontractororbuilding servicesengineerotherthanaStructureorSeismic NSEengineer,canalsosupplytheirowndesign alongwithProducerStatement1andcangeta CPEngseismicengineertoreviewandsupplya ProducerStatement2.Eachcontractormustissue theirownProducerStatement3fortheservices theyinstalledforanygivenproject.

NZS4219:2009outlinessomerulesofthumbs whenitcomestotheMechanicalServices.Some ofthemainonesareasfollows,

Rigidductwork,wherethehangerlengthfromthe topoftheducttothestructuralsupportexceeds

200mm,shallberestrainedagainstseismicforces determinedinaccordancewiththisStandard.

Flexibleductworkgreaterthan1.5minlengthshall berestrainedinaccordancewiththisclause.

Ductingnotrequiringrestraintshallbeinstalled withaclearanceof150mmfromhangersand bracesforsuspendedceilingsystemsorother adjacentsuspendedcomponents.

Suspendedcomponentsthatareinstalledinline withtheductsystemandhaveanoperatingweight greaterthan10kg,suchasfans,heatexchangers andhumidifiers,shallbesupportedandlaterally bracedindependentlyoftheductsystem.

Registersandgrillesshallhavepositivefixings totheducting.Ductingbetweenceilingmounted grillesandrigidlymountedductingshallbeflexible, ormovementprovisionprovided.Dampers,louvres anddiffusersshallbepositivelyattachedtothe ductwithmechanicalfasteners.Ducttapeshall notbeusedtoprovidemechanicalfixingor seismicresistance.

MostoftheseismicNSEengineerstakeupto 10daystosupplythefinalProducerStatement 4aswellasupto3-4weeknoticeforthesite inspection.So,pleaseplanaheadforthisworkto avoidthepressureattheprojectdeadlines.
