SupportedbyfundingfromEECA(theEnergy Efficiency&ConservationAuthority,)WoolWorksin Timaruhasundergonealargedecarbonisation project.Partoftheworkwascompletedby PiersonsRefrigeration&AirConditioning,which includesthedesign,supplyandinstallationofa 750KWCO2-basedheatpump.
“Traditionally,WoolWorkshadusedasix-megawatt coal-firedboilertomeettheirhotwaterproduction needs–quiteanoldandinefficientprocess. Themajorityofthewaterisconsumedbythewool scouringprocess,withthedirtywastewater providinganexcellentopportunitytorecoversome wasteheat,”saysMattThomas,ManagingDirector atPiersonsRefrigeration&AirConditioning.
Withthenewsystem,thewastewateriscollected inthecommonsumpatapproximately35–40ºC.
Fromthissump,thelow-gradeheatistransferred viaanintermediate,tube-in-tubeheatexchanger withaself-cleaningfiltrationsystembackintothe high-temperatureCO2heatpumpsystemwhere thequalityofthisheatisraisedto90ºCusingthe thermodynamicpropertiesofaCO2-basedvapour compressionsystem.
“Thishigh-temperaturehotwaterisproducedat aflowrateoftwolitresasecond,withaCOPof morethan3.5,”saysMatthew.“Thismeansthat foreveryunitofelectricalenergy,theheatpump produces3.5timesthatamountinthermalenergy.”
Piersons’SeniorEngineer,JoshLeCompte,was thesupervisorforthisproject,andsaysthis equipmentisattheforefrontofCO2-basedhot waterheatpumptechnology.
“Thisheatpumphasbeendesignedspecifically forthisproject,andbecauseofthat,we’reableto extracteverydropofefficiency,”saysJosh.
“Thisheatpumpwasbuiltusingworld-leading suppliersandwiththesystem’scustomisedPLC controlsystem,we’reabletoeasilycommission, tuneandadjustthesystemtomatchthefactory’s needs.Ourveryuser-friendlyandvisualhuman machineinterfacemeansourtechniciansareable tocommission,diagnoseandmonitorallaspects ofthesystem,anditcanalsobeaccessed remotely.”
Notonlydoesthisnewsystemrecoverotherwise wastedenergyforWoolWorks,itisalsocoupled withanAir-dryerheatreclaimunitandaflow-down heatrecoverysystemthattakestheloadoffthe electrodeboilerandallowsWoolWorkstokeep theirpowerconsumptionundertheallowable threshold.
Piersons,togetherwithGlaciemCooling TechnologiesandengineeringconsultantLumen, havefullydesigned,builtandcommissionedthis bespokeCO2heatpumpsystem.Thisincludesthe designandconstructionoftheheatpump,pump skids,allfieldservicesandelectrical,rightthrough tothehandlingofthecouncilconsent.
Introducing WorldSkills2026 Nextyear,theworld’slargestinternationalskillscompetitionwillbe heldinShanghai.
Heldeverytwoyearsandhostedbymember countriesacrosstheglobe,theWorldSkills Internationalcompetitionsareagreatopportunity forapprenticesinourindustrytorepresentNew Zealandontheworldstage.
Thesecompetitionspromoteapprenticeship, professionaltraining,mobility,youth,andtheir skills,bringingtogetheryoungpeople,industry, educationandgovernmentleadersfromaround theworldtoadvancetechnicalandvocational educationandtraining.
Theeventsandnetworkhelptoskilldevelopment throughpromotinganddevelopingglobaltraining standards,benchmarkingsystems,andenhancing industryengagement,aswellasinfluenceindustry, government,andeducatorsthroughcooperation andresearch.
In2024,JackButlerwentontocompeteatthe WorldSkillsInternationalcompetitioninFrance, followinghisaward-placementinourWallieAskew MemorialWorkskillsCompetition.
PriortocompetinginFrance,Jackalsocompeted intheAustraliaGlobalSkillsChallenge,designed tosimulatetheconditionsoftheinternational competitionandallowcompetitors,expertsand othersupportteammemberstheopportunityto meetaheadoftheglobalevent.
ToparticipateinaWorldSkillscompetition,a competitormustbefromamembercountryor region.InNewZealand,thisisfacilitatedby IRHACEandWorldSkillsNZ.Acompetitormustnot beolderthan22yearsoldintheyearofthe competition.
IRHACE’sWallieAskewMemorialWorkskills Competitionistheperfectplaceforapprenticesto starttheirjourneytorepresentingtheirindustryon theworldstage.

It’sachangethatcomesafterthepreviouschanges inMay2023,whichsawanincreaseininsulation requirementsforroofs,walls,floors,windows,doors andskylights.Thesechangeswereintroducedto improvetheenergy-efficiencyandthermal performanceofAotearoa’sbuiltenvironment.
However,concernswereraisedaboutoverheating andhighermoisturelevelsinhomeswithincreased insulation,andadisproportionateincreaseinthe costtobuildrelativetotheperformance.
Afterreviewingthis,theMBIEultimatelyfoundthat theseconcernswerearesultofpoordesign–includingbuildingorientation,ventilation,window shading,andheatabsorptionpropertiesofbuilding materials–ratherthanincreasedinsulation.
TheH1clauserequiresenclosedspaceswhere temperatureorhumidityaremodifiedtoprovide adequatethermalresistanceandtolimit uncontrollableairflowincertainbuildings.Italso setsoutphysicalconditionslikelytoaffectenergy performance,andrequirementsforhotwater systems,artificiallightingandHVACsystems.
Therearecurrentlythreemethodsusedtoseeifa buildingmeetstherequirementsundertheBuilding CodeH1EnergyEfficiencyclause:the Schedule Method (a‘onesizefitsall’prescriptivetableof insulationvaluesthatisproposedtoberemoved), the CalculationMethod,andthe ModellingMethod
TherecentfeedbackprocesswillhelpMBIEto understandwhether:
•adjustmentstothemethodsofcompliancewill reduceupfrontcostsofbuildingsandimprove costeffectiveness;
•anyproposedadjustmentsbetterbalance upfrontcostdesigndecisionswithlong-term costbenefits;

MBIEalsowantstounderstandtheneedsofthe buildingdesignsectortoimprovethemanagement ofinternalmoistureandoverheatingrisksin buildings.
Alongwithmanyothers,HVAC&RCentreprovided itsfeedback,andweawaitupdatestounderstand howourindustrywillbeimpacted.
Asophisticatedhotelfit-out foraholidaydestination MitsubishiElectricwasinstrumentalincreatingatop-rated accommodationexperienceforguestsstayingbeneaththestunning Remarkablesmountainrange.
Year-roundcomfortwasakeypartofthebrief whendesigningtheHolidayInnQueenstown RemarkablesParkHotel.Withthecold,snowy wintersandhot,dryOtagosummers,asafe, energy-efficientandcentrally-managedcomfort heatingandcoolingsolutionwasrequired.
THESPACE Spreadacrossfivestoreys,plusabasement,the 9,500sqmhotelfeatures182rooms,afullservice restaurant,bar,grabandgocafé,cosymedia lounge,gym,fourconferencerooms,andadrying/ storageroomforallgueststokeeptheirskiand outdooradventureequipment.Theopenlobbyis aparticularlypopularspacewhereguestsand visitorscaneat,drink,work,meet,relaxand socialise.
THECHALLENGE Asahotelprojectwith182rooms,theconfined sleepingspacesareclassifiedasaClassA applicationundertheAS/NZ5149:2016and thereforehasamaximumchargekgforrefrigerant volumes–ifthesystemweretoexceedthe concentrationlimit,formsofmitigationsuchas alarms,shutoffvalvesandventilationwouldbe neededtoensuregreateroccupantsafety. Alarmsasaformofmitigationcanbecostlyin thelongterm.
Also,asabuildingwithdifferentspacesand multiplefunctionsamixofVRF,splitsystemsand anairhandlerunittointroducefreshairwouldbe requiredforsimultaneousheatingandcoolingto ensurecomfortineveryspace.
However,itwasimportanttotheclientthatguests couldsoakuptheviewfrombalconieswithoutit beinginterruptedbybulkyoutdoorairconditioning units.
THESOLUTION TheMitsubishiElectricR32Hybridadvanced simultaneousheatingandcoolingsystemwith heatrecoverywasthelogicalchoicefor accommodationareas.R32Hybridisbasedona 2-PipeHeatRecoveryVRFSystembutuseswater asaheatexchangemediumbetweentheHybrid BranchControllerandtheindoorunits.Assuch, thesystemcombinesthecomfortofatraditional hydronicsystemwiththeefficiencyandeaseof modernVRFairconditioning.
Waterattheheartoftheindoorunits Withwaterratherthanrefrigerantusedbetween thepatentedHybridBranchBoxandtheindoor units,thisremovedtherefrigeration-containing partsfromtheoccupiedspacesbytransferring heatingorcoolingtoeachindoorunitviawater. R32Hybridnotonlysignificantlyreducedtherisk ofrefrigerantleaksintheseconfinedspacesto safeguardguests,thetotalcostofthesystemand ongoingmaintenanceisreducedastheneedfor expensiveleakdetectionisminimised–amajor benefitforthemaintenanceteam.
TheR32HybridsystemutilisesthelowGWP refrigerantR32,providingarealsolutionthat delivershighoperationalefficiencywhile minimisingtheglobalwarmingpotentialofthe refrigerantsusedwithinthesesystems.Thehybrid technologyalsoreducedtheamountofcostly refrigerantwhileprovidingadditionalbenefitsof awater-baseddesignsuchashighersensible coolingandnorefrigerantnoiseattheindoorunits.
Lessmaterialandequipment MitsubishiElectric’sunique2-PipeHeatRecovery Systemrequireslesspipingthana4-PipeChiller System.Thesystemdoesnotrequireanexternal pump,valves,sensors,actuators,orotherancillary controlsassociatedwithconventional4-Pipe ChillerSystems.

Duetothecapacitiesneeded,MitsubishiElectric’s CityMultiVRFwaschosenfortheopen-planlobby. ThemodularnatureoftheVRFsystemalso allowedfortidyinstallationalongsidetheR32 HybridSystemandseamlessintegrationwiththe airhandlerunitthroughtheZubadanSeries Condenser,whichintroducestemperedfreshair intothekitchen.
Thephysicalfootprintrequiredfortheoutdoor unitsontherooftopissignificantlysmallerthan othersystems.Inthehotel’spublicspaces,theuse ofdiscreteconcealedductedunitswithstylish grillesandin-ceilingcassettesallowstheinterior designtotakecentrestage.
Low-temperatureheatrecoveryperformance
TheZubadanHeatPumpoutdoorunitusedin conjunctionwitharefrigerantcoilmountedinthe airhandlerunitallowsairtobepre-heatedor pre-cooledpriortoenteringthefacilitytomaintain safetemperaturesthroughouttheseasons.The uniqueMitsubishiElectricZubadanCompressor intheoutdoorunitensuresthatfullheating capacitycanbeprovidedevenduringthesnowy Queenstownwinters,withoperationdownto ambienttemperaturesof-25°C.
With182roomstomanageaswellasconference roomsthatcanexperiencetemperature fluctuationswhenhostingevents,quickand remoteadjustmentoftemperatureswaskeyfor maintenancestaff.TwoAE200Centralisedand WebControllerLCDtouchpanelswereinstalled withthreeEW-50ECentralControllerExpansions, allowingupto250indoorunitstobecontrolled; onetouchscreencontrolstheguestroomsandthe othercontrolscommonareasandbackofhouse.
TheAE200’slarge,back-litdisplaymakes programmingabreeze,givingthemanagement teamcontroloftemperature,fanspeedandairflow optionsatthetouchofabutton.Theabilitytotime roomairconditioningoperationwithcheck-inand check-outtimesalsoavoidswastefulenergyused whenroomsareempty.
THERESULT AsthebulkoftheinstallwasR32Hybrid, time-consuminginstallationandcost-heavy ongoingleakdetectionrequirementswereavoided. NowtheHolidayInnRemarkablesParkHotel standsproudinthenewlyestablishedprecinctas aconvenientlylocatedonestopshoptosleep, eatandconnect,intotalcomfort.

(1)APCBUmustensure,sofarasisreasonably practicable,thateveryworkerwhocarriesoutwork ofanykind,usesplantofanykind,ordealswitha substanceofanykindthatiscapableofcausing ariskinaworkplace:
(a)either:
(i)hasadequateknowledgeand experienceofsimilarplaces,andwork, plant,orsubstancesofthatkind,toensure thattheworkercarryingoutthework, usingtheplant,ordealingwiththe substanceisnotlikelytoadverselyaffect thehealthandsafetyorcauseharmtothe workeroranyotherperson;or
(ii)isadequatelysupervisedbyaperson whohasthatknowledgeandexperience; and
