McAuliffe Clan Gathers in Newmarket

A gathering of the clan has in recent times been held every four years in Newmarket, County Cork, once the heart of the McAuliffe clan lands.

The Gathering was scheduled for 2020 but because of the Covid pandemic it was postponed twice and instead was finally held on the 24 – 26 June 2022. The Culturlann Macamaloibh was a fitting centre for the activities coming alive with music, dance and memorable performances.

McAuliffes from all over the globe descended on Newmarket for a celebration of the clan and its heritage.

Special thoughts were given to John McAuliffe who was clan chieftain and has just recently passed away.

GOATS Gather For Anniversary Celebration Local legend Billy Coleman ventured to Donegal for a once in a lifetime gathering of the greatest drivers in Irish history. These GOATS (greatest of all time) took on two of the classic stages as part of the celebrations for the 50th Anniversary running of the Joule Donegal International Rally Ireland. Billy has won the event a whopping four times; ‘77, ‘84, ‘85, ‘86 and he joined the other legends in his Porsche Carrera 911.

Community News Well done to Meelin NS Junior Entrepreneur Class who presented a cheque to the Twomey Remorial Weekend and Ellie’s Wish To Walk of €100 (€50 each) from the profit of the sales of their Rollercoaster business.

Elber and Marion accepted the cheque on behalf of these two fantastic charities in some very Irish weather. Well done to the kids for this lovely gesture!

Delighted to be awarded our Blue Star Programme flag!

This was a wonderful programme to be involved in as it integrated so well into our SESE Curriculum.

We loved learning about Europe, taking part in European day, having our Italian Day, Zoom with the European Commissioner and the really fun quiz at the end of the programme.

This is the third Flag the school has been awarded this year for different initiatives.

Well done to pupils & staff for all their work in achieving this.

The various programmes allow our learning to go far beyond the classroom.

Play Day In Knocknagree

Knocknagree Community Development Group CLG were delighted to open their playground in the village on Thursday 23rd of June. Big thank you to Cork County Council especially Diane Finucane, Maura Walsh and all the staff in IRD Duhallow Ltd, Cllr. Bernard Moynihan, Cllr. John Paul O Shea , TD Michael Moynihan, Kompan for an excellent job. John Prendiville, our former Chairman and project manager. Our fundraising group and the whole community for supporting our fundraising efforts. We will be organising a celebration day over the next few weeks.

We are absolutely delighted to add this to our village and hope it will benefit years of generations to come.

Cullen Vintage Afternoon Returns July 10th!

After a two year break, Cullen Vintage Afternoon makes a welcome return. Patrons will be in for a treat, viewing the wonderful display of lovingly and magnificently restored vintage machinery, tractors, motors, motor cycles, steam, and stationary engines. Fingers are crossed that the clerk of the weather will look favourably for the staging of the 22nd Annual Vintage Afternoon.

Anyone who has vintage machinery is welcome to come along and join in. No doubt the display of machines used in days of yore will create great interest.

An added attraction this year is a musical treat by Country and Irish singer T.R. Dallas, plus a recital from Cullen Pipe Band.

New this year: entertainment for Children with Kenny the Clown, Balloon Artist.

There will be the usual side shows:, children’s sports, raffles for many valuable prizes, etc.

This afternoon has become a fixed event in the Duhallow and Sliabh Luachra calendar and indeed further afield, making it a day for all the family to enjoy. A day where people can meet, reminisce and

enjoy the days of old in a relaxed atmosphere. Many friendships are renewed and new ones formed each year at this Annual gettogether.

Everyone has had a very challenging two years but it’s great to get a chance to bring people together again to raise much needed funds to support centres and maintain services for Special Needs. The past two years were like no other not just for individuals and families but also for voluntary organisations. This fundraising event is both enjoyable and vital to the financial standing of those centres. All monies raised will be distributed to the various groups locally caring for our Special Friends.

COVID 19, the downturn in the economy, and serious cutbacks has had a substantial impact on organisations

and centres, they would not be in a position to deliver the range of quality services without the goodwill and generosity of local communities thus support for fundraising activities are a valuable and vital source of income, in enabling people with intellectual and physical disabilities live fulfilling lives and reach their full potential.

Huge credit must go to our organising committee and fantastic team of local volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure everything will go well. An event like this does not happen without support and help from the many people who give so generously of their time; by sponsoring, attending, helping, stewarding, food preparation, assisting with parking and the media who promote the afternoon etc., so once again we call on volunteers to get involved, for whatever amount of time that they can help with tasks to make this the best ever afternoon.

Sliabh Luachra Musician Firstly, thanks to everyone involved for all the encouragement and to everyone who attended. It was a great night for the community and was very well supported locally, and it was good to remind everyone of the kind of local talent we have. We started just barely after 8, and the evening was still bright. As darkness fell, even with the light in Culturlann MacAmhlaoibh, the atmosphere just grew. Everyone was settled in, and the building, lighting, and the mood all rose to the occasion. The night captured everything - song, poetry, music, and dance, as the audience as utterly embodying the music. You can’t orchestrate that. And you can’t orchestrate the love shown for Timmy O’Connor either. We brought him up on the stage and the crowd went mad!

The place was pure electric, and with every tune, the atmosphere rose and rose. He’s a crucial ingredient, and it was fantastic to see the respect given to him. He’s 87, he’s been playing the box a long time, and the music has not gone out of fashion. We only scratched the surface – there’s so many other great musicians that could have, should have, hopefully will be included. You can only fill so many in on the night.

My own daughter Cara and her friend were in the front row, winking and throwing the thumbs up. When I get that thumbs up, I know we’re on form. Young people just need to experience the vibe at least once, then give it a go to see what they can achieve with their own music.

Following the main event, we got together in the Rock bar for a session.

So many people had travelled from all over to see the show and wanted to join in the tunes. We were there until the wee hours, dancing and playing with some phenomenal musicians. And since then, the night has brought people to me who I never knew listened to it. It’s what I wanted from the night - this music and culture is in our blood, in our DNA, and it’s brought out so much community.

What will others think? Who cares!

Churchview Psychotherapy, Millstreet What would you do differently if you thought no-one could judge you? How would you live your life if you didn’t feel like you had to keep up a specific image, look good for others, or reach a standard that you don’t even like? Would your life be different if you cared less about what other people thought of your life, your decisions?

As humans, we are evolved to hunt in packs, to not be isolated, and to be accepted. We develop the idea that we must fit in at any cost. This can be very limiting when we allow it to influence

the way we live, when we care so much about the opinions of others that we forget to think for ourselves, we don’t follow our own dreams, or we never get to discover our true passions.

There are several benefits to not caring what others think: • Your life becomes a lot simpler.

You no longer need to use energy or time trying to guess the reactions of others. You can make your own decisions.

• You gain a sense of independence. You get back a control over your life. You take the power back.

• You learn to love yourself. By doing more of what you want to do and less of what you feel you ‘should’ do, you are giving

yourself the message that you are important, that you matter.

• You learn to live more in the moment. You gain freedom from future worries or past regrets, allowing you to enjoy moments as they unfold.

•You learn to rely on yourself for happiness.

Once you learn to stop caring about what others think you can begin to discover your own thoughts, opinions and personality.

You can see that living becomes much easier when you follow your own path. Let’s be honest, you will never be able to please all of the people all of the time. So, give yourself a break, take a breath, and please yourself.

Learn To Use Process Goals

When someone comes to me to take up online coaching, one of the questions I ask is “what is your goal for the programme?” The answer I usually get is “I want to lose X amount of weight” There is nothing wrong with weight loss as a goal. However, it is an outcome goal. An outcome goal is the goal you want to ultimately hit. As a side, I don’t ever recommend a target weight to hit as a goal – a certain number on the scales does not need to define you.

In order to achieve an outcome goal, you need to have process

goals and these are the actions you are going to take daily to hit the outcome.

These are the goals you should be measuring yourself against and tracking against daily.

When it comes to losing weight, some process goals could include • • • • •

Going out for a 30-minute walk 5 times a week Doing 30 minutes of weight training 3 times per week Eating a portion of vegetables with lunch and dinner every day Having a protein source at each main meal Creating a regular sleep routine and maintaining this at the weekend

Ecologist at IRD Duhallow Tackling declining water quality and maintaining good water quality is becoming increasingly important in agri-environmental policy. In this article we will explore riparian buffers, one of the most effective measures to protect water quality.

Riparian zones are the transition zone between land and river.

Riparian buffers are strips of vegetation that grow along watercourses. These zones offer many significant ecosystem services. Tap roots from trees, for example, act as a filter to maintain water quality, protecting the watercourse from pollutants such as nitrates. Roots of riparian zone plants also stabilise the riverbank, minimising the impact of bank erosion. They also create a habitat for many terrestrial (land) species and their leaf matter feeds many aquatic insects which play an important role in the food chain. Other benefits include natural flood management, carbon sequestration and natural beauty.

Dromagh Gets The Gold Dromagh National School was awarded Gold in the Agri Aware Incredible Edibles healthy food programme during the academic year 2021 – 2022. At a time when there is a growing disconnect from where our food originates, the Incredible Edibles programme helps children learn all about how food gets to their plates while growing their own fruit, vegetables, and herbs too.

The Agri Aware Incredible Edibles programme had its biggest ever intake of entries this year. In its fourteenth year, there were over 1850 schools involved meaning more than 76,000 children across the country took part. The Award-Winning Incredible Edibles Healthy Eating Programme was launched for its 14th year in October 2021. This hands-on SESE linked programme strengthens geography, science and maths learning as well as giving pupils the tools to make better food choices.

Firstly, we had to learn about food origin: Our pupils were encouraged to visit their parents’ food cupboards and their local supermarkets in search for some yummy Irish produce. Their teacher, Ms. Edel Sheehan explained to them about the Bord Bia quality mark and were on the watch out for the little Irish symbol within their shopping trolleys with their parents. They couldn’t believe how many locally produced foods were in their cupboards at home and in the

shops! This project supports the Schools Healthy Eating policy within the school.

Secondly, the children had to identify Irish potatoes, fruits, vegetables, and herbs. All pupils tasted the various foods and participated in food identification.

Next was the planting and growing section. Ms Sheehan told Agri Aware: “We have planted all seeds, strawberry plants, and potatoes.

All children have participated in these activities. We are all taking care of our plants and have two teams of gardeners. Our team for this week takes out the plants each day and place them in the warm sunshine. “…. these students were busy planting their strawberries, potatoes, and seeds. They are all taking care of our plants and have two teams of gardeners.

They are looking after our seedlings each day, monitoring their growth, and taking them in and out of the classroom each day.

“The sprouts are in a new pot today, this made for great excitement! The children love the responsibility of taking the plants in and out each day. We have left the potatoes outside and are waiting eagerly for the first signs of growth. The children loved planting the seeds and are thoroughly enjoying taking care of them.”

Fourthly was the preparing, cooking, and eating Irish fruits and vegetables stage to the

programme: The junior room teamed up with the senior room to have a fun, healthy eating day.

They got to prepare, cook and eat potato wedges, fruit drinks and salads. They wrote recipes, drew pictures of fruit and vegetables. It was really fun preparing, cooking and presenting the potatoes. But the best part was getting to eat, drink and enjoy our fruit and vegetables aided by addition of a BBQ with juicy burgers from the local butchers. This was the greatest reward of all – tasting and munching on the sweet home-grown produce.

Next the pupils had to take part in Healthy Eating Week and learn about the Food Pyramid.

The whole school had great fun taking part in Healthy Eating week and learned a lot. They examined their lunch boxes and completed daily fruit and vegetable charts.

The children blew the judges away with the scale and quality of their gardening work and completing tasks to an impeccable standard.

This Gold award follows on from the Certificate of Achievement for Incredible Edibles School of the Week which was awarded on April 6th to the Junior Room.

The Secret of Happiness – The Holy Mass

By TOM DENNEHY One of the greatest treasures to be discovered is the secret of happiness and the greatest gift that God has given us is the gift of Himself truly present in the Holy Mass.

Padre Pio, one of our great saints, said, “The world would exist more easily without the sun than without the Mass”. He understood the infinite value of Holy Mass.

Saint John Vianney, patron saint of priests, another wonderful saint who understood the amazing power of the Eucharist said, “All the good works of man though many, are not equal to the value of one Holy Mass”.

At the Last Supper, Jesus gave himself to us as food for our souls, “This is my Body given up for you and this is my Blood which will be shed for you.”

At Mass, Heaven comes down to Earth and we are present once again at Calvary.

Present when Jesus offers himself to His father as an offering in atonement for all the sins of the world. The supreme act of love for us.

When we go to Mass we go in thanksgiving as Eucharist means thanksgiving. We hear the Word of God which uplifts us –the good news of the Gospel. We hear words of encouragement from our priest. We receive the Body of Christ as food for our souls.

As a community, we have an obligation to join together in prayer.

It would be wonderful to see once again every baptised person join together in prayer for each other, for the community, for all our dead and for the whole world. Jesus invites us to pray together and receive the Eucharist as food for our journey. We give thanks to God for all the gifts and graces

we have received. From this we gain the strength to become better Christians.

For regular Mass goers it is the high point of their day and the secret of their happiness.

All our ancestors made tremendous sacrifices for our faith which is brought to fulfilment in the Mass, many giving their lives.

We know from the many Eucharistic miracles which have taken place throughout the world that Jesus gives us his heart in the Eucharist. The miracle of Lanciano and the miracle of Buenos Aires scientifically prove that it is heart tissue that is present from the left ventricle of the heart which has suffered trauma and is still living tissue. We have been given these miracles to help us understand the great miracle of the Mass and they are all available on a website created by a young man called Blessed Carlo Acutes.

Today many of us don’t bother going to Mass. It is a shame and it is all down to lack of knowledge.

We, as a people, do not really understand the Mass and if we did, we would not miss it, no matter what. It would be the most important thing we would do in our lives.

We need to spend some time in getting to understand the mystery of the Mass and ask the Holy Spirit to help us to increase our faith and help us to get to know and to love the person of Jesus who made that amazing sacrifice for us.

It was Jesus who gave us the Mass on Holy Thursday night.

He invites us to join with him in offering atonement for the sins of all the world. There are many graces poured out on us at Mass.

If we realised that Mass is the greatest event in the world, our churches would be full.

Jesus welcomes everybody. He has never broken His promises to us and has promised to be with us always until the end of time. His presence in the Eucharist in Body, Soul and Divinity is the fulfilment of that promise to us.

Scully’s Sliabh Luachra Charm

Sliabh Luachra Musician If you ask a traditional musician about their local sessions, you’ll have names, places, and times for every day of the week and regular newcomers to boot. But for me, the place that embodied the Sliabh Luachra music experience was Scully’s in Newmarket.

They started off over 40 years ago. It was a handy meeting spot for a bit of practice, but as it wore on, after one great session, Jackie Daly suggested a regular session; “the beauty of it is you know if you go in there on that night, you’ll meet a few musicians.”

Between the jigs and the reels (Mick Scully’s words, not mine), Monday was the only free night for everyone, and the rest, as they say, is history.

All sorts have come through the door to Scully’s – musicians from all over, step dancing groups, awards, you name it. It was a hive for that Sliabh Luachra feel.

Unfortunately, like so many more, the sessions ended when the first bar restrictions of Covid came in and they never came back. There are still sessions in the area – Wednesdays in the Rock Bar is my usual haunt – but there’ll be nowhere like Scully’s. The energy it captured, that bottle of old Sliabh Luachra charm, there’ll be nowhere like it. For many, it’ll live on as a fond memory for musicians with more than a few happy stories to share.

It is important to tailor your CV and Cover letter to the individual job descriptions to ensure that specific job requirements are being addressed. It is very common for employers to scan through job applications to shortlist suitable candidates hence a comprehensive and on-point application is hugely important.

This will take some time.

Don’t rush Of course, there may be times when you are under pressure to make a submission deadline for an application or that life is simply busy. However : Do not rush over the very basics including a spellcheck before submission, ensure that all relevant documents are attached or enclosed. Take the time to review your application carefully and ideally ask someone to proofread before sending.

Give your application the time and effort it deserves In essence, you should always give your application the time and effort it deserves. An employer will see from the quality of your application whether you have spent time on the preparation. Put your heart in it and put your best foot forward. This is the best recipe for success.

The McAuliffe Clan Reunite

From June 24th to the 26th, McAuliffes from all over the world and here at home congregated in their ancient territory of Clanawley to celebrate the Clan’s 8th Gathering since 1992.

This year the fully restored Old Protestant church, now known as Cultúrlann MacAmhlaoibh was open and the venue for all the weekend events apart from the cultural and history tour on the Saturday and Sunday, facilitated by Mossie Angland.

No Points For Second Place As Top Gun Maverick currently soars in cinemas, we go back to Tony Scott’s iconic testosterone fuelled original; Top Gun (1986).

Movie producing duo, Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer owned the 80s when it came to producing popular audience action fare. Add in director Tony Scott under their banner and you had a trio that gave us works that still endure, Top Gun being right towards the top. It follows hot shot pilot Maverick (Tom Cruise), who gets a chance to attend Fighter Weapons School where he falls for a civilian instructor (Kelly McGillis) while trying to achieve top pilot status over his peers.

This was a star making turn for Cruise. We really see the Cruise persona coming into effect here, cock sure, and arrogant while being likeable and

vulnerable all at the same time.

Kelly McGillis is great also, as well as Anthony Edwards, Val Kilmer and Tom Skerrit.

Tony Scott was often seen as crude by film critics. They thought his movies were cut too fast, shot too erratic, and sounded too loud; not the case. He was a man that created a style really - the MTV style employed new and experimental editing and shooting techniques so he could deliver high octane action scenes. The aerial action scenes here are amazing. And no one used smoke in interior scenes to accentuate an

environment like Scott did.

Top Gun was a huge hit for other reasons; a great Harold Faltermeier score not to mention two iconic songs, Take my Breathe Away by Berlin and You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ by the Righteous Brothers. Its success even led to a massive enrolment in pilot training academies.

Is it high art? No. Is it cheesy? Yes. Who cares?! It’s really entertaining and exciting action done right. Tony Scott will definitely be a man I’ll be featuring more of in the future.

As of writing this, I am about to see its sequel. I hear good things about it but the original casts a long shadow. Here’s hoping Maverick’s second outing will take my breathe away.

I’ll see myself out.

Dog Dos - Not Just For Summer!

As the warmer months have gifted us some sunny days of late, many pet owners thoughts have turned to arranging their pet’s summer haircut to keep them comfortable as the temperatures rise. Although a lighter cut in the summer can be helpful, there is no need for drastic measures and a buzz cut in many cases – we live in Ireland, not Barbados after all!

By right, grooming and coat care should really be an all-year-round consideration to optimise your pet’s comfort and welfare, not just a summertime concern. Depending

on the length and texture of your pet’s coat, recommended maintenance may range from a wash every 6-8 weeks in the case of very short haired breeds, to daily brushing at home to keep tangles at bay and a full wash, cut and style every 6-8 weeks in the case of longer haired or curly breeds. Some breeds with thick coats may even need help to shed their thick undercoat regularly. If you are not aware of what you need to do to maintain your pet’s coat such that it is tangle free and comfortable, then your local qualified groomer or veterinary practice will be able to guide you.

The areas of the body which are

prone to matting are the areas in which there is a lot of movement (the top of the legs in the armpit and groin areas), on and behind the ears, and in some cases around the bottom if the pet has issues with toileting properly. Matts pull and tug at the skin, becoming tighter over time, and can represent a considerable source of pain and distress for pets. Matting can be effectively prevented by regular brushing and visits to the groomers, however if matting is established, then a more extensive professional groom to shave off the mats may be the best solution to return your pet to comfort.
