IRD Duhallow’s award winning furniture revamp is introducing a Paint recycling project in conjunction with Cork County council. It is now for sale in our retail area as Relove Paint.

Old paint can be brought to your local amenity site, and it is then passed on to be mixed. The process offers a new lease of life as paints are mixed to create a

range of new colours.

This internal paint is sold in 5L buckets at the IRD Duhallow Furniture Revamp Shop, and is best used for walls and ceilings.

With this addition, Revamp has added to an already extensive range of recycled and upcycled products.

Boherbue Comprehensive’s Transition Year Mini Company, Pole Pals were recent winners in the Senior Category at the National Finals of the Student Enterprise Programme held in the Helix, Dublin. Picking up two awards from An Tánaiste, Leo Varadkar, The Intellectual Property Award and Best Commercial Potential Award for their innovative product Pole Pal which is designed to assist farmers in the collection of pigtail poles when strip grazing fields. The team included Elisha Daly, Padraig Aherne, Kate O’Connor, Noirin Doody, Darragh Moynihan, Darragh McCarthy, Daniel McHale, Jessica O’Keeffe, Gearoid O’Sullivan, Diarmuid Murphy, and Joshua Fleming.

Seamus Sexton Gets Gold at Bowling Championships

On Sun last the Irish road bowling team really sprung to life at the European Bowling Championship in Germany winning three of the four individual gold medals on offer and two bronze.

Local Nadd Banteer man Séamus Sexton of the famous Sexton Road Bowling family is the new men’s champion of Europe, taking the gold medal held by David Murphy in each of the last three European championships.

Other Irish winners were Darren Dempsey and Rachel Kingston who both bowled brilliantly to win the two under-18 medals, while James O’Donovan and Kelly Mallon won bronze in the senior championships.

Seamus win on the challenging Süderhastedt Road in SchleswigHolstein Germany was the one that really resonated with the Irish.

Firstly, as his massive score held out against a determined late challenge and also it seemed fitting that he should take a title twice held by his late father Seamus in 1974 and 1977 who passed away a short while ago.

Seamus did absolutely everything right on a road that puniched the slightest mistake. Getting out the last bend in six was the critical target for anyone with ambitions

of winning gold. Seamus was well out, but he then had to produce four perfect shots from there to gain enough metres to stay clear of Europe’s elite bowling players.

Three super shots in succession followed by a sensational 349m last shot, secured his 2,323.9m total.

His road mark had him close to 200m ahead of Germany FKV’s Simon Quathammer. Ireland’s James O’Donovan put in a surging finish, but he just fell short of Quathammer’s score. One by one challengers failed to get close to Sexton’s score, till the very last group of the day, containing David Murphy and Germany FKV’s Ralf Look.

Ralf Look played four incredible first shots and consolidated his challenge with a massive fifth one.

He was slightly right with his sixth one, but he was out the famous last bend. The entire gallery was now focused on Look, encouraging handclaps echoed out in support of his every effort. After a sensational seventh he was very much in the frame, but he lost ground in his next two. He reached 1,935m with his ninth. He needed a massive shot now to bridge the gap.

He was slightly right with his bowl and it fell well short of the target. A wave of Irish tricolours and a surge of Irish supporters swept onto the road for an emotional celebration.

For all of Look’s heroics he ended outside the medals which meant James O’Donovan held his bronze.

Thomas Mackle was next best of the Irish in seventh and former champion David Murphy, who was injured on Friday, finished 14th.

The combined efforts of the Irish men also secured the team gold medal.

Scoil Mhuire

Scoil Mhuire Kanturk: Developing Empathy and an awareness of sustainability The new Junior Cycle subject, Applied Technology, aims to provide students with the opportunities to develop technological capability and literacy. To achieve these aims, students should be engaged in solving complex, practical problems in everyday contexts, using a broad range of technological knowledge and skills. One of these types of complex problems involves designing and making usercentred solutions where learners must think about the world as it could be encouraging them to be innovative and use their imagination. Scoil Mhuire is long established as having a vibrant Technology education department and have been involved in many research initiatives in the past that have focused on teaching, learning and assessment in the Technology classroom. Mr Gerald Crotty (Technology teacher in Scoil Mhuire Kanturk) and his class have now become part of an international research project that is led by the Technical University of Delft, Netherlands, with an international group of researchers working with schools in the Netherlands, Sweden, India, Israel, Ireland and South Africa as well as England. The goal of the project is to help pupils make their learning visible as they navigate their way through design projects and challenges.

This aligns with the new Junior Cycle Applied Technology subject and Mr Crotty has joined up with Technology Education Research Group (TERG) members Dr Donal Canty and Dr Nicolaas Blom from the University of Limerick to work on the project in the coming months. While the students in Scoil Mhuire are engaging in this design

activity, so too are pupils of the same age in the other countries - this will afford opportunity for shared learning experiences into the future. The first design challenge involved the design of a light feature by reusing light bulb packaging. Students had to design a light feature for one of seven user personas who had diverse needs. For example, Kay wanted a light feature to play with her cat, Glenny wanted light features to create calming effects in a sensory room; Shira wanted a light feature to help her fall asleep. Designing for users with particular needs required students to learn about other people’s needs and wants to design and make fit-for-purpose solutions, engaging students in developing empathy while thinking about sustainable designing.

On Wednesday the 4th of May, the Second Year Students were introduced to the 6-hour design challenge for the first time. During the first session, students chose the user personas that they were designing for. After choosing who they will be designing for, students were then prompted to communicate their first ideas in a design portfolio. To help students imagine and be creative, a ‘handling kit’ was provided to inspire design ideas. These handling kits were made up of objects that may stimulate thought or ideas that lead to discussions with their peers and teacher that support students in idea generation phase. The first session ended with students generating and evaluating their initial design ideas and thinking about how they would meet the needs of their chosen user.

On Friday the 6th of May, the group started bringing their ideas to life through modelling kits and

materials so that they could test the functionality and feasibility of their work. These kits inspired ways to physically model students’ ideas to see if their ideas would fit the user’s needs and would be able to solve the design challenge.

Students were very enthusiastic during this activity and commented “this activity is so engaging and fun”.

Dr Blom commented on the enthusiasm of the second year Applied Technology group in Scoil Mhuire and said that “the students in Mr Crotty’s classes are always enthusiastic about new and challenging design tasks”.

He added that “the way in which students embrace the open-ended nature of the design challenge will support them in future Applied Technology Assessments and beyond the classroom in their daily lives”. Dr Canty was very impressed by the ability of the students to “collaborate and support each other to design fit-for-purpose design solutions”.

Both Dr Blom and Dr Canty were impressed with the diversity and quality of the solutions to the design challenge that the students came up with. Students commented on how the use of the user personas really helped them in understanding the world from the perspective of others which enabled them to think deeply about their designs and come up with ideas that had potential to enhance the lives of others.

At the end of the design activity, students presented their design ideas and experiences in a class discussion with Mr Crotty. Students could identify key design skills they developed during the design challenge, including thinking in all directions, sharing ideas, developing empathy and deciding

Dr Canty commented at the end of the 6-hour activity: “there are ideas and things that now exist that have come from these young minds and this shows us all the great potential that we need to nurture through effective teaching and learning strategies so that these young people can make and shape our world in the future”.

Well done to the class and Mr Crotty, and we hope to have more to report in the future.

Get Ready To ReLov

The reloving procedure starts with Revamp collecting used water based paints from the civic amenity sites in Kanturk and Millstreet. Then we bring them back to our new paint workshop where the mixing process takes place, a tuition on the mixing process was delivered by The Rediscovery Centre in Dublin through training days both in Dublin and here in revamp.

We then put it into 5 litre buckets and sell it in our retail area for €15 per bucket.

There is potential for the integration of circular principles into almost every aspect of production and consumption, and the Relove Paint example demonstrates that delivering a circular economy can have positive environmental, economic, and social impact on our local area.

IRD Duhallow are leading the way in promoting the circular economy in our rural community. There is a long way to go, and large business and industry has a huge role to play in terms of product design, green procurement, and minimising waste. That said, we cannot underestimate the part that we all can play in driving the shift to a circular economy through our own choices and demands for sustainable services and products.

Our enterprise is now up and running and is fully experienced in filtering, remixing, recolouring and

repackaging the paint, and will be producing a high-quality paint to sell within our local communities.

Paints are collected at civic amenity sites annually and are generally exported for treatment – at a cost to both councils and potentially to the environment. Approximately 60% of this waste paint is water based, much of which could be reused and upcycled. The Paint initiative, which is part funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Local Authority through Paint recycling. The EPA funding has allowed for some set-up costs, of a paint reuse and upcycling system in our social enterprise as well as the training of staff.

As well as helping to protect our environment by using paint from this project in your homes and businesses, you will be supporting our social enterprises who epitomize the circular economy at its very best. IRD Duhallow Furniture Revamp will also deliver for the local economy in terms of job creation and reducing the costs for individuals, community groups and businesses who are using the paint.

Along with IRD Duhallow Furniture Revamp putting 200 ton of recycled furniture into the circular economy in the Duhallow region ReLove paint is a great example of circular production, which will be a real-life circular economy initiative that delivers environmentally, socially and

economically in the Duhallow region. Paint is a problem waste stream in Ireland. In Cork city and county, up to 190 ton of waste paint is collected at local authority civic amenity sites annually and is generally exported for treatment at a cost to both councils but also potentially to the environment.

We would like to thank everyone who helped us during the setting up process including the other social enterprises involved and all at Cork county council environmental dept. including Michelle Green, and Thomas O Shea manager of Millstreet and Kanturk Civic amenity sites.

STRIVE Coffee Morning

The STRIVE group at IRD Duhallow would like to invite you to their coffee morning in aid of the Irish Community Air Ambulance on Friday 24th June 2022 between 10am and 12pm in the Duhallow Community Food Centre at the James O’Keeffe Institute, Newmarket. The STRIVE team are busy preparing for the coffee morning and will be doing all the work themselves! The group are currently learning how to use the coffee machine, serve customers and make posters in preparation for the charity event. STRIVE will also be baking their own cakes, buns, scones and other treats for everyone to enjoy.

STRIVE picked the Irish Community Air Ambulance as their chosen charity because they provide an essential service to our community. They treat some of the most critically ill and injured patients, bringing them to the hospital in a quick and timely manner. The air ambulance relies

A Bit About STRIVE There are 17 young people in the STRIVE group here at IRD Duhallow. The purpose of the programme is to support young people with disabilities to improve their employability through a range of person-centered supports. STRIVE aims to break down the barriers to employment for those with disability and improve their pathways to work through building the participants confidence, independence, inherent skills and talents.

Participants are empowered to develop as individuals and enjoy new challenges through volunteering and increased social participation whilst making a positive contribution in their own communities where possible.

The coffee morning event is a great taster event to show the participants the different aspects of what’s involved in organising an event, while also raising money for such a worthy charity.

Bealtaine In Duhallow

The Duhallow Saoi Network was delighted to see a return of the Bealtaine Festival post covid with many of the favourite in person events back on the calendar.

Bealtaine is a festival held throughout the month of May which aims to promote actively ageing and encouraging older people to get involved in their community.

Hundreds of older people got involved in events in their community with a wide range of activities from the Duhallow Dawn Chorus, Tea Dances, to Culture and Heritage evenings, as well as Chairperson Jack Roche’s Famous Mystery Tour, Walks, Day Time Cinema and the Duhallow Seniors Concert.

Clondrohid Active Retired Group on a socraiocht night in their Community Hall for the Bealtaine Festival. Missing from Photo was Tim Joe, and Denis Keane. We varying ethnicities, nationalities, thoroughly understand that our student variation strengthens our school’s sense of empathy and understanding; This prevents hatred from ever taking root.

Within the coming weeks, our TY class aims to paint Students Sean O’Keeffe, Richard Nolan, and Setanta two separate walls

outside our school; one being a bright amber to bring attention to mental health, the other, a myriad of the colours of the rainbow to bring awareness to the struggles of the LGBT youth. Our curriculum has always had an aspect of understanding and being in control of our mental health. Our school has had many ongoing campaigns against homophobia, and we have not had any instances of sexual discrimination in recent years.

In terms of ethnic diversity, there are a total of 8 European nationalities in the Ty class alone, with each bringing a distinct and esteemed culture. International identity is a key part of our school’s values and learning. Diversity is a valued aspect of our school which is regularly celebrated with school initiatives such as European Day of Languages and International language day. We regularly set up posters in a wide variety of up to 10 European languages, including but not limited to Irish, German, French and Spanish.

The Value Of Sport

v The role of sport in creating opportunities to bring disparate people together by strengthening ties, and celebrating common ideals of fair play, participation, and common goals is well known.

Furthermore, where younger people are concerned, parents and guardians often see participation in sport to way to strengthen their children’s resilience and social skills. For some households, participation in sporting activities is even more meaningful, especially for those who may be forcibly displaced, or have experienced periods of upheaval. For people who have arrived in a new place and are in the process of making efforts to make new connections the value of becoming involved in a sports club to forge new connections and bonds cannot be overestimated.

In recent weeks, IRD Duhallow’s Equality Working Group coordinated the provision of a number of hurleys and helmets for the use of children living in the Drishane Direct Provision Centre in Millstreet. Thanks to the Social Inclusion Community and Activation Programme, this support was made possible. The purpose of this project was to encourage young people to become involved in sporting activities and to establish connections through playing sport with their contemporaries. It is hoped that having access to the adequate equipment required to play, young people will be supported to take up sport.

For people from minority groups the importance of taking part in locally played sports and extracurricular activities has been

seen as important factor in the progression of social inclusion.

Zak Moradi is quickly becoming a familiar face on Irish media, he is also an articulate public speaker who gives a compelling account of his journey from Kurdistan in Iraq to Leitrim in the post 9/11 period. For Zak, his initial involvement with Leitrim hurling has led to him becoming a familiar face highlighting the benefits of integration in sport. He is also very definite in his belief that diversity in Irish sport will be a key feature going forward. Zak is also involved with St. Thomas David GAA club in Dublin and is an advocate for sport as a conduit for inclusion.

In recent years, we have seen prejudices coming to the fore all too regularly during various sporting events, leading to widespread outrage and condemnation on behalf of spectators on a global level.

Yet throughout history, we have seen the strength of iconic sports people such as Jack Johnson and

Muhammad Ali pave the way for younger generations of athletes to aspire to. We have seen athletes such as Jesse Owens reaching unprecedented heights in track and field exercises. Tennis star Naomi Osake and NBA player Lebron James have made amazing strides in their respective careers yet have also encountered racism. Nelson Mandela is credited with saying that “sports can create hope where there once was only despair, it is more powerful that governments in breaking down racial barriers. It laughs in the face of all types of discrimination”.

Inclusion and diversity in sports has benefits for all communities as it reflects the reality of the diversity of multi-cultural societies, including that of modern-day Ireland.

How To Access Information On Local Water Quality

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) monitor water quality of rivers, lakes, estuaries, groundwaters and coastal waters across Ireland Ecologist at IRD Duhallow and all the data they gather is made available on a website called ‘catchments.ie’. Much of this data is mapped and you can access maps by going to catchments.ie and selecting the ‘Maps’ tab. Once you have done this you will be able to select an abundance of maps, each one representing a different dataset. Spending some time navigating around the site and investigating the different layers is probably the best way to become familiar with all the data the website has to offer. For the purpose of this article, we will focus on some data relevant to the Water Framework Directive, and we will use two exercise to help you get started on your data quest.

For the purposes of monitoring, Ireland classifies water quality status as being bad, poor, moderate, good, or high. A q-value system is used with Q1 representing very poor water quality and Q5 representing very highwater quality. Water quality status is then represented on the map using different colours as can be seen in the figure below: Exercise 1 Find out what condition your local river is: 1. Go to www.catchments.ie 2. Click on the Maps tab 3. Click the Monitoring & Flow tab 4. Select the Latest River Q-Values layer from the drop-down menu 5. Zoom in to your local river and click on the coloured dot to see what Q-value was obtained and where the monitoring station is located.

Exercise 2 Find the significant pressures on an at-risk river: 1. Go to www.catchments.ie 2. Click on the Maps tab 3. Click on the Status and Risk tab 4. Select ‘WFD Risk 3rd Cycle’ from the drop-down menu 5. Select the ‘River Waterbodies Risk’ layer from the drop-down menu 6. On the map, the river network will be classified into green, orange and red colours. Zoom into your local area and click on a red-coloured river near you. This Fig 1: Ireland’s Q-value system is an at-risk waterbody.

7. On the pop-up side-bar (left of page), select ‘View the Data Page’. This will bring you to the data page for that river.

Sure They Grow Up So Fast

It is fair to say that when you have children, you open yourself up to a lot of advice, especially from those who have travelled the parenting road before you. Most advice consists of “enjoy them, they grow up so fast”. Easier said than done, especially when you’ve been up twice in the night to a baby, or your toddler has just put Sudocrem all over the television. Or when the last time you took them to the shop for milk you had to leave as your four year old roared for 20 minutes when you wouldn’t buy food for a dog that you don’t have. So, of course you love them dearly, but you don’t always enjoy them.

It can be a challenge to mind your mental health when you have children, aside from the tiredness, lack of good sleep, and the endless work that comes with children, it can also be a time of adjustment, when you miss the person you were before children and become the person you are now.

There are some easy ways to make life easier: • Stop comparing; you do not need to compare your child to other children as they all hit their milestones at different times. Also, you do not need to compare your parenting to others. What works in other peoples families will not work for you. Do what is right for your children and your family.

• You cannot pour from an empty cup; you are allowed to think of yourself occasionally.

Being a parent does not mean that you sacrifice your own enjoyment. Put your pleasure and your activities first every once in a while.

•Lessen your standards; Your children are not neglected if they watch Youtube videos in restaurants or have toasted sandwiches for dinner once a week. If they wear a stained jumper to the park the world will not end.

So, remember, you love them dearly, they are the centre of your world, but you do not enjoy them every minute of every day and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Think Before You Eat

One of the biggest reasons I see for weight gain with clients is mindless eating. Mindless or unconscious eating is when you eat food without thinking beforehand. This usually happens with highly palatable foods such as chocolate, crisps, cakes etc.

There are a few ways you can work to manage this; The first is to plan out your meals for the day.

This can reduce mindless eating.

You have a food plan for the day and this can include some the

highly palatable foods like chocolate. By planning these foods in your diet, you are less likely to overeat on them.

Another way to manage mindless eating is to pause before you eat the food. Ask yourself if you are really hungry. If you are, is there another food you could eat that would satisfy your hunger and may be more in line with your goals? Are you eating because you are bored? Call a friend or family member. Get out for a walk.

Do some jobs around the house.

Taking a moment to ask yourself why you are eating a food can reduce mindless eating.

Is It Our Turn To Play?

It’s true.

Within Ireland, even within Duhallow, Sliabh Luachra is its own beast. Before music, Sliabh Luachra was famous for its poets, writers, and artists. It’s a culture inspired by safety; your safety, your family’s safety, that’s how the culture developed. That sense of safety and that awareness of the contrary, it seeped into the art.

No one here is a stranger to trad music, but the Sliabh Luachra music is a sound of its own. It’s passed down, like adding links to a chain. Timmy plays as he learned from Johnny Mickey Barry, and I play the way I learned from Timmy, without any interference or any outside genres of music and stuff. Compare the music now and then; music is so accessible now with Spotify and the internet and everything, there was none of that in that time. They played the style, they weren’t copying or emulating, they were playing the way they felt the tune should be played. It isn’t about the massive ornamentation; it’s pure rhythm and music. With those tunes, it isn’t about how many notes you play in the tune.

A famous quote - Dan Jas Herlihy used to say; “‘tisn’t about the notes you play; it’s about the space between the notes.”

The music and the stories they carry echo a simpler time, and some of the regions most notable composers capture this sense, even now; as late as the recent session in the Rock Bar, Raymond composed some lovely music. New music came to the Sliabh Luachra repertoire over Covid and honest to God, if you listen to them, they

don’t sound new. They sound like old tunes, and that’s a big thing for a composer that’s into that. New stuff is fantastic as well, but there’s a different sound off the older music.

The trad is strong here; there are fantastic musicians around the place, young musicians especially. They’re highly involved in Comhaltas and in competition, but this isn’t the same.

Local music wouldn’t be recognised in that world. They have incredible skill and talent, but the standard is so good that in a couple of years, the old stuff will be gone.

We started the session when the lockdown lifted, and the curfew was 9 o’clock. My cousin has the Rock Bar in town and we said we’d go in. We started with one night and said we’d meet, start at 7, finish at 9. It stayed the same, it suited everybody, and we’re still at it, I don’t know how many months later. A lot of youngsters come in, including my own daughter and her friends. They’re good at it, it’s a good confidence builder. At the start, they didn’t want to play, now they come up and they say “is it our turn to play yet?”. I get a great kick out of that, and Timmy does too. It’s a great time to meet and we’re all learning tunes, we’ve got musicians coming down - my wife Maria plays the fiddle, Siobhan Cronin on the banjo, Raymond O’Sullivan, another fantastic musician and a great man for knowledge, Marie Barty comes down with the piano

accordion, Eilish Murphy on the flute, Henry Keogh on the bodhrán, and Tim Browne comes down from Kanturk. In the last couple of months there’s a few extra people, I don’t know where they hear about it but they come on anyway. We’ve had a piper from Scotland there, he was blown away by it! We’d a great old evening.

Ultimately, I want to make aware that there’s a massive wealth of culture and heritage where we are and I hate to see it slide while saying “I should have done this or that”. So this is my contribution to it at the moment. At the concert, and on the album we recorded, we’re playing a couple of Johnny Mickey Barry tunes, fantastic tunes. If ye’ve the pleasure of buying the album or getting a hold of it, ye’ll hear the tunes on it; they’re very distinctive, the rhythm, you can hear the music in it, it’s hard to describe it. If you never liked Sliabh Luachra music before, you should give it a listen. It might change your mind.

Join us on the 16th of June at 8pm in the Culturlan MacAmhlaoibh in Newmarket, and celebrate this music with us, and fall in love with it just as we did all those years ago.

One of the rarer celestial events to have been observed from Earth happened in 2017 when scientists observed two neutron stars colliding in a galaxy 130 million light years from Earth. In this instance, what remains, the neutron star, is so dense that a teaspoon of it would weigh 10 million tons. Just for context, that’s about 10 million Ford Fiestas!!! In a teaspoon!!!
