Each year, communities around the Duhallow and Mid Cork region are invited to nominate members to be put forward for election to the Board of IRD Duhallow. This year, it is the turn of Mid Cork and North Eastern Duhallow.

The Mid Cork Elections will take place on the 23rd of June in the Castle Hotel in Macroom at 8pm. The communities that are eligible to vote in this election are: Carriganimmy, Clondohid,

Aghabullogue, Rylane, Ballinagree, Bealnamorrive, Inchigeelagh, Kilbarry, Macroom and Rusheen.

The communities that comprise of North Eastern Duhallow are Newmarket, Lismire, Kanturk, Kilbrin, Castlemagner, Cecilstown, Dromtarriffe, Freemount and Tullylease. Their elections will be held on the 27th of June in the James O’Keeffe Institute, Newmarket at 8pm.

Index Editor’s Note As May comes to an end, we are seeing brighter days, longer evenings, and a sense of freedom. That promise of sun and relaxation slinks ever closer, and before we know it, exams and holidays will be upon us.

That makes it the perfect time for communities - school community events and local events are already on the rise, and on page 16, we get a look into how to bring these events to life. While we didn’t last to the Eurovision, Ireland is approaching the 50th anniversary of joining the EU. Hannah Walsh of Colaiste Treasa reflects on growing up with the EU influence and how it has paved the way for her and her peers.

And lastly, Br. Malachy offers his thoughts for the month of May, and encourages us to liken ourselves to the seasons and start anew, forgive the winter, and grow in reconciled fields.

Community News

Well done to Danny Meagher who has completed KCFE’s Animation course, and took part in an exhibit in Siamsa Tire. Danny’s work in stop motion, 3D and hand drawn animation, traditional drawing, studies, and original work were put on display for a week with some other KCFE students.

Pictures from an Easter Egg Hunt that took place at Kiskeam Walking Trail on Easter Monday. The hunt was organised by Kiskeam Village Events Committee.

Kanturk Arts Festival Looking for your Submissions

Due to the success of last year’s Poets’ Trees Installation, Kanturk Arts Festival Committee is repeating the project again this year. In addition, they are also running a photographic exhibition. Readers are asked to submit their poems of no more than 20 lines on any subject on www.kanturkarts.ie.

The photographic exhibition will include two categories – Open and Kanturk. All entries will be on a slideshow on the website: www.kanturkarts.ie. Twenty images will be printed and will be displayed for the months of July and August. Images can be submitted through the A small section of last year’s Poets’ website.

Castlemagner Bealtaine Concert

This event takes place on Friday May 20th in the community centre at 8pm.

This annual event is enjoyed by the young and not so young. Song dance, story telling, entertainment is the theme of the night and a cuppa is also part of the Bealtaine celebration. Come along and enjoy the evening and you will also be supporting the Sinsir Club. Everyone is welcome.

Communicating Europe

50th EU Anniversary Approaches

The EU’s founding values are “human dignity, freedom, democracy, and respect for human rights”. The EU is important to me for its core values and promotion of equality.

As a young person growing up in the European Union, it provided a sense of security and stability.

Knowing our country is protected from extreme economic collapse and war provides a great peace of mind. It allows many people to focus on their futures without worrying about the present.

The EU is fully inclusive and all citizens have equal rights across the whole of the continent. You can travel, work, study and access fair healthcare no matter where you are. This is even more relevant to me now as I consider career and further education options. For citizens of the EU to have these choices opens many doors we would otherwise only be able to dream of. Many of my parents’ generation saw no other option but to emigrate, and third level education in Ireland wasn’t even an option for most of my grandparents age group.

When Ireland joined the Union it was a relatively underdeveloped country. The EU provided finance,

support, and expertise to improve infrastructure and living standards.

The effects can be seen in most aspects of life from education, to health care, to facilities. The membership of the Union also made Ireland attractive for foreign direct investment as companies had access to the single European market of over 500 million people.

All of this has helped to raise Ireland to sixth in the world GDP rankings.

This has resulted in a huge choice of careers available to my peers, and emigration is now choice rather than a necessity.

The EU’s Common Agricultural Policy supports Irish farmers as well as the development of the country’s rural communities by investing in projects that improve living conditions in the countryside and helping rural businesses to become more competitive.

Farmers who would otherwise not have been able to make a living are now able to farm their land and contribute to Ireland’s food production and economic output. The European Union also emphasizes sustainable farming and reducing carbon output to combat climate change. Ireland has been allocated EU funds of up to €13.3 billion between 2021 and 2027 to help with its transition to a low-carbon economy.

Kanturk RFC U10S & U12S travel to England

On the May Bank Holiday weekend Kanturk RFC brought the two under-age teams via Ferry to Somerset for a Rugby Festival.

Both the U10 and U12 teams were accompanied by parents and a very enjoyable time was had by all.

Both teams played up to seven matches and accounted for themselves in brilliant fashion. Participants travelled from all over Great Britain and some from as far away as Dubai. This was the first time Kanturk RFC took on such a project and given the feedback from most of the 60 that travelled, plans are already afoot to travel again in the future.

Runners Descend on Bweeng for the Bweeng Trail Blazers 5k Road Race Over 250 runners from all over Munster with a strong showing from local Cork running groups descended on Bweeng for the Bweeng Trail Blazers 5k road race on Sunday 8th May. The hospitality and great sense of community was very evident on the day.

The running club is very much a big part of the community in Bweeng and the Bweeng Trail Blazers club caterers for levels of runners - they put on a race for runners from elite level to social runners. The community centre provided a central area for registration and after teas, coffees, homemade

cakes and food.

The prerace line up was abuzz with excitement, with word that Peter Samba of Dunboyne AC and Jake O’Regan of St. Johns AC would be taking to the start line along with some other Michelle Kenny (3rd), Sinead O’Connor (1st), Jessica Coyne (2nd) all fine athletes in Leevale AC by 6 seconds in a time of 14:22. Scoil Mhuire Kanturk Scoil Mhuire Kanturk regain Senior Hurling Title

County Final 9th May 2022: Scoil Mhuire Kanturk 4-20, Colaiste Pobal Bheanntrai 4-2 On a wet and windy Monday in Ballyvourney Scoil Mhuire faced Colaiste Pobal Bheanntrai. On winning the toss captain Eoin Walsh chose to play with the wind. First blood was to Bantry getting an early goal before a great strike from Michael Murphy got Scoil Mhuire going. Another goal from a 21m free from Bryan Healy saw Scoil Mhuire go into a lead of 2-4 to 1-1. Bantry responded with a goal before Scoil Mhuire enjoyed another length of dominance playing an exceptional level of hurling in challenging conditions. A Penalty goal from Gearoid Healy and points from Bryan Healy, Ryan O’Leary, Diarmuid and Oisin O’Connor and frees from Gearoid Healy resulted in Scoil Mhuire having a commanding lead of 3-15 to 2-1 at the interval. The second half was a tighter affair with Bantry now having the wind assistance and goaled twice either side of a goal from Darragh Burke. Man of the match Gearoid Healy kept the scoreboard ticking over along with points from Timmy Morrissey and Bryan Healy resulting in a 4-20 to 4-2 victory for Scoil Mhuire, their first win in the competition since 2017.

Millstreet Community School

The TY Dublin Trip was an action-packed 3-day tour, including a DCU information day, Karting, historical visit to Glasnevin Cemetary, Croke Park visit, McKee Barracks and Equestrian School, Phoenix Park, Bowling, the Jennie Johnston, Famine and Emigration Museum, Trinity College, the National Gallery, a few minutes shopping and back late Friday night.

Thanks to all the bakers and musicians who helped out in the Bake n’ Busk event, raising over €2,000 for the Irish Red Cross appeal for Ukraine.

Congratulations to TY student Nanette McCartney, who received a National PressPass award at the Aviva Stadium in the ‘Opinion Piece’ section.

Nanette entered through her TY English class, working with teacher David Irwin.

In a powerful and thought-provoking piece, Nanette impressed the judges and was recognised for her unique approach and distinctive style.

Nanette met many journalists at the event, including Matt Cooper, (pictured right), who encouraged her to keep working on her writing. We look forward to see more pieces in print from an up and coming writer.

The Language and Culture Week took place between Monday 28th March and Friday 1st April. It celebrated the increasing cultural diversity in the school and community. Issues addressed included integration, migration, cultural diversity and racism.

Activities were sports, quizzes, art, workshops, peer education, film and food tasting. The week was being coordinated by members of the MCS TY GCE class.

Millstreet Community School

Congratulations to Millstreet Community School 5th Year student and traditional musician Anna Moynihan on winning the Siansa Gael Linn music competition with her fellow Cork musicians and band, Lasrach. This was held at the National Concert Hall in Dublin on the 10th of April. Anna and her family have been at the heart of music performances in Millstreet Community School, celebrating special events and always at fore at the Lunchtime Sessions with Mr O’Neill.

The Darkness Into Light walks nationwide are symbolic walks into the sunrise, reminding us of hope in times of despair and that there is always a solution if we reach out. To get behind this initiative, the Millstreet school team organised a Rebel Mile, to help raise funds for Pieta House, an organisation who offer free support to young people in crisis, raising €550.

Pieta House depends on public support for funding. The TY students and Ambassador Schools team set out a one-mile circuit and all year groups got out in the fabulous sunshine to walk or run.

Exercise and just going outside are great ways to feel better, so get outdoors!

What is Social Farming?

Social farming offers people with disabilities the opportunity to spend time on a family farm, taking part in day-to-day farm activities. It is both a traditional and innovative approach to social integration, using agriculture and horticulture in local, rural regions to promote and generate social inclusion.

Social Farming activities focus on people’s potential and encourages participants to socialise and gain confidence. It increases people’s self-esteem and capacity, improves community connections and relationships, as well as their health and well-being. The farm is not a specialised treatment farm; it remains a typical working farm where people in need of support can benefit from relationship building through farm activities in a non-clinical environment.

IRD Duhallow was delighted to receive funding from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine this year to develop a social farming programme for the Duhallow region. Duhallow Social Farming

Nora, Louise & Martin with Peggy & Aoife Lynch operates as a voluntary model to enable real working relationships and friendships to develop.

The Duhallow Social Farming programme adapts to each host farm environment and the needs of each individual participant.

Host farms are supported with any maintenance and on-farm safety improvements, as well as access to relevant training opportunities.

Our farmers have taken part in a first aid and ‘safeguarding vulnerable adults’ course, as well as an introduction to social farming online course.

What is involved?

Participants go to the host farm once a week for 2-4 hours on average. A range of activities

take place on our host farms, from feeding and checking in on animals, to planting and growing vegetables and flowers. Of course, the most important job on all our host farms is the cup of tea before home time!

Social farming can take place in farms ranging from 1 acre up to several hundred acres in size and across all sectors, including mixed farms, dairy, suckler, sheep, equine, horticulture, etc. Each participant will be matched to the host farm depending on their own abilities and interests. IRD Duhallow will facilitate an induction day where the participant and farmer meet; the participant gets to see the farm and they both

Why get involved?

Social farming creates the opportunity for farmers to reconnect with their local communities by opening their farms as part of a social support system. The Social Farming programme can improve the farm work environment, with the participant providing the farmer with help and company. Social farming will also allow for learning opportunities for the farmer, giving them a better understanding of disabilities and improving their communication skills. Farm improvements may be another benefit for farmers, with IRD Duhallow assisting with on-farm safety upgrades for social farming activities.

Michael and Peggy Lynch, Host Farmers Michael and Peggy Lynch have a sucker farm in Ballingeary, Co. Cork. They also have two miniature ponies, two pygmy goats and three dogs. Michael and Peggy have four daughters: Caitriona, Roisin, Aoife and Aisling. The family have welcomed Louise, Martin and Nora from COPE foundation along with their support worker Cathy to the farm. Peggy told us why they decided to get involved in social farming: “My husband Michael and I wanted to do something to help people in need. We discovered IRD Duhallow were doing this social farming programme and I knew in my heart straight away this was the perfect opportunity for us. We contacted IRD Duhallow and now have three participants from COPE foundation coming to our farm and we absolutely love them. They’ve become part of our family, part of our week and part of our lives. We love seeing their smiles and hearing their laughter and jokes. They’ve really changed the atmosphere on this farm by being here and helping us out. Martin is so strong and is great at brushing the ponies and setting flowers. Louise and Nora are brilliant at feeding the calves and looking after the goats. It’s in giving you receive, and I would recommend social farming to everyone”.

A glimpse back at 2013. We are currently in the midst of silage season so we suggest to our readers be extra vigilant travelling along the roads at this time. One is very likely to come across big vehicles so please be careful.

Safety on the farm is crucial as well. IRD Duhallow has ran a number of safety talks and courses over the years but it can never be stressed enough - from us here at IRD Duhallow to both young and old; please be safe on your farm!

Day Of The Region

IRD Duhallow is calling on all its communities to take part in their Discover Duhallow – A Day of the Region Initiative for 2022. Prior to Covid hitting in 2020 communities actively took part in this initiative since 2012, which involved a range of cultural, educational and sporting activities. It is hoped that 2022 will see these events being reignited again and it will be something for all in the region to look forward to.

The Day of the Region Initiative is a LEADER Funded Cooperation Project with project partners in Scotland and Romania. IRD Duhallow piloted this initiative in 2012, and due to its success we have seen the programme double from 6 weeks to 12 weeks with a wide array of events being held to suit everyone.

The concept behind this project is all about building community capacity and boasting regional pride in our rural communities. It is evident there is a real community spirit out there, and IRD Duhallow is proud of all the communities for PROGRAMME OF EVENTS :: 2019

their involvement in the project over the last number of years. We are now asking that communities will once again get back out there and roll out a jam packed summer of events and activities across the region, and that the public will come out and support these fantastic events.

Events in the past included family fun days, cultural events, guided walks, and performances, and we are asking communities this year to think outside the box. What makes your community different?

Why not showcase what’s in your community and what it has to offer those visiting or those living in the area?

For many people new to the area or those who have recently returned home, it can be a surprise to them all that’s to offer in their local town or village. There

are so many diverse groups in the region of which we are not always aware. Similarly, with so many new families moving into or back to the region, it is often the case that a community doesn’t know all of its residents. Asset based community development encompasses all of this, where we can see what human assets via the skills people in a community have which they can contribute to their community along with what physical assets are in the community. It is through community events and gatherings that communities can showcase what they have to offer and meet all those living in their community.

All of which will help to create a living countryside.

Your Best Is Good Enough

We hear a lot about selfesteem; how to keep it healthy, how it develops, and the effects of having negative or low self-esteem. But what is selfesteem? Why is it important?

Self-esteem refers to our fundamental belief we have in ourselves, the value or worth we place on ourselves as a person.

You may be a very accomplished decent person with many positive qualities, but if we believe we are inadequate, if we believe we are not good enough, or if our over-all picture of ourselves is negative then we have low self-esteem.

This, in turn, will affect how we see ourselves and how we live our life. Thinking badly about ourselves can affect our mood, our

motivation, and our enjoyment in life.

What are the signs of having low self-esteem?

•Being very critical of ourselves.

• Being very sensitive to criticism feeling defensive when criticised.

• Difficulty making decisions as we do not trust our own judgement.

• Excessively trying to please others.

• Feeling guilty when putting ourselves first.

Low self-esteem can be caused by a number of different factors including early life experiences that may have given us negative messages about our worth, bullying experiences, traumatic relationships ,or even stress.

So, how do we improve our selfesteem? Firstly we can begin to question our self-critical thoughts.

Just because we think something

does not make it true. Self-critical thoughts can be loud and intrusive, but that does not make them true.

Secondly, drop the precautions that keep the beliefs in place. For example, we may not try anything new because our negative beliefs are telling us we would be no good - try it anyway and disprove the thought. If you don’t try you will never know. Finally, learning to appreciate our positive qualities and treating ourselves with kindness and compassion can replace our negative self-belief.

Using a notebook to log positive traits, actions, or achievements can help us to remember them when we are having difficulty recalling them.

And remember the golden rule of self-esteem; You do not always have to be the best, your best is good enough.

Ditch The Fad Diets

Many of you reading this will have tried one of the above or something like it.

These diets do work. In the very short term. You are eating practically nothing (I mean, one of them makes you replace food with Aloe Vera). Your body is losing weight because you are eating less calories than your body needs.

But what happens when the diet is over?

Have you learnt how to manage

your emotions around food so you don’t overeat everything in front of the TV when you are bored?

Have you learnt how to create a balanced meal that is going to keep you sustained throughout the day?

Have you learnt how to change your habits for the long term so you can maintain any weight lost?

People will challenge me that fad diets do work because they are losing weight. However, the issue is what happens after the diet ends. You have not learnt how to

change your eating behaviours for long term success.

When I work with clients, one of the first things we look at is their relationship with food and repairing that. We look at why someone may overeat or why someone is afraid to eat for fear of putting on weight.

Trust me, the fad diets don’t work long term. Save your money and invest in a coach who truly cares about your success and not just lining their pockets.

Thoughts For The Month Of May Each of us is a special creation of God. He had planned to create us ad infinitum. He selected our parents and the place where we were to be born.

Everyone born is a member of God’s family and is creature of love. Jesus said “By this shall everybody know that you are my disciples if you have love for each other”. This is the requirement that he gave to each one of his children

“love one another as I love you”.

The first question we will be asked when we arrive in his kingdom is “And how have you treated your brother and sister”? If he is not satisfied with your reply he will tell you “leave here and go back and be reconciled with them”.

Death will be much more pleasant for all of us if we have been fully reconciled with everyone. All children and individuals are equally loved by God, so it is equally hurtful to commit an altercation with a member of your own family as it is someone else.

Benjamin Franklin is credited with saying “An investment in knowledge, pays the best interest”. History has taught us that participation in education and self-improvement augments people’s awareness of the value of community involvement. IRD Duhallow has long promoted community education and lifelong learning as a driver of social inclusion and positive social impacts in the locality. Regardless of age and circumstances, the opportunity to participate in education that is accessible has been seen to be pivotal in the Duhallow region as a change creator. For many individuals, having the right skills and opportunities can help develop confidence and self-esteem which are both essential to improving employability. Participation in education has both direct and indirect impacts. The direct impacts of education are easy to measure, particularly the concrete outcomes of formal qualifications or achieving new skills. However, participation in further education

can have indirect impacts. These include an individual accessing an improved social network or achieving an improved sense of personal identity, both of which are difficult to measure, but of great significance.

In recent weeks, a group of Traveller women made the headlines as they graduated from UCC at a conferring ceremony, marking their conclusion of a course on leadership in the community. In 2020, we also saw a Traveller woman, Eileen Flynn, take up a place in Seanad Eireann. We have seen NigerianIrish poet and playwright Felicia Olusanya feature on the Leaving Certificate syllabus with one of her poems. A further inspirational story of educational achievement is that of Irish-Syrian journalist Razan Ibraheem, who worked for 10 years to save for the university fees so she could study in the University of Limerick.

Ms. Ibraheem is now a wellknown media analyst and familiar contributor on humanitarian catastrophes. On an international level, we have seen famous young change creators who were impacted in their lives by extreme

Malala Yousafzai recieved the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 at just 17, making her the youngest person to receive it. difficulties, yet subsequently focused their energies on helping others facing barriers in educational attainment. Malala Yousafzai is world renowned due to her passionate support of education for girls, and this has led her to become the youngest ever Nobel Peace Prize recipient at the age of seventeen. Her extraordinary story came to the world’s attention when the Taliban attempted to assassinate her in her native Pakistan in 2012.

Malala survived her injuries and progressed to study Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford University.

All the above examples of academic attainment bring into focus the social value of participating in education and its impact in supporting change and social inclusion. An individual’s investment in their own education may bring with it a wide range of social benefits for themselves, their own households, and ultimately their wider communities.

The Message Of Fatima

One hundred and five years have passed since Our Lady appeared to three shepherd children in a small village called Fatima in Portugal.

In May 1917, the world was at war and the Portuguese government had declared that God didn’t exist. Churches were closed, and priests and religious were expelled from the country.

At the first apparition, the Blessed Virgin Mary told three little children - Jacinta, Francisco and Lucia that she had come from Heaven and asked them to pray the rosary for peace and to offer sacrifices for sinners to atone for their sins which had offended God so much.

She appeared to them five more times. During her final apparition, she revealed herself as Our Lady of the Rosary. 70,000 people attended this apparition. Our Lady had promised the little children a sign to show those present that she was really appearing to them.

The great Miracle of the Sun was witnessed by all present and could be seen for more than twenty miles away.

We live in a time when more and more people have forgotten or are denying the reality of Heaven and Hell. Our Lady reminds us of the reality of both. She has told us that if we offer up our sufferings and our rosaries, we can win graces which can help those who are far from God to have a profound conversion. This can be seen when people go to confession for the first time in many years, they encounter the merciful love of their Heavenly Father. He always welcomes back his Prodigal Son or daughter with open arms and great love. They experience divine

grace and forgiveness and can then forgive themselves. Many Catholics today do not recognise that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist so the message of Fatima helps us to believe in the great miracle performed at every Mass when the bread and wine are transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ.

Of great significance in the message of Fatima were- The preparation of the three little children by the Angel of Peace who taught them how to pray.

- The visit of the Guardian Angel of Portugal, who appeared to them in 1916 holding a chalice in his left hand, with the Host suspended above it, from which some drops of blood fell into the chalice.

The Angel then taught the children how to adore and reverently receive the Real presence of Jesus

The message of Fatima is as relevant today as it was in 1917.

The Blessed Virgin – Our Blessed Mother came as a messenger of peace, her presence transforming the lives of these children. They in their turn became beacons of light and love from the turbulent secular society in which they lived. The Blessed Virgin spoke not of an angry God but a loving and compassionate God who loved and cared for His children like any parent. God wished to save all His children so Our Lady came to lead all of us to have a personal relationship with her son Jesus.

Fatima calls us to love and to trust our faith, to repent of our sins, to adore Jesus in the Blessed Eucharist, to pray daily for conversion. The message also reminds us of the need to pray daily for the holy souls who rely on our prayers and sacrifices.

May we discover the beauty and truth of our faith and come to know the God who loves us unconditionally and forgives us daily.

Our Lady of Fatima Queen of Peace, pray for us and enfold us in your mantle of mercy.

Both Jacinta and Francesco were canonised as saints in 1917 on the centenary of Our Lady of Fatima. We ask them to pray and intercede for all of us.
