The Banteer Ambush 1921 Remembered

Occurring on the 8th March, 1921, The Banteer Ambush is a little known ambush that happened in the War of Independence. It is overshadowed by the more well known Nadd Ambush that occurred after it but it has finally been honoured as a minor but successful hit against British forces in the area at the time.

Lovely weather greeted a

great turnout for the event commemorating the occasion recently with Rory Driscoll as MC on the day, Tadhg Curtin reading the proclaimation and Dr. Padraig Óg Ó Ruairc delivering an oration regarding the ambush and the legacy of the War of Independence in Ireland today. A great day to remember brave men and women fighting for our freedom.

It’s summertime everyone! I don’t know about you but as is my tradition this time of year, I kick it off by blasting a stone cold classic tune; Summertime by DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince.

In this issue we have plenty from our regular contributors. Alice asks what motivates you; and Siobhan gives us some tips to plan an exercise regime. Community News Kilcorney Tractor Run raises a whopping €12.000 for local Air Ambulance

On April 22nd, 2022, the Ned Tarrant Memorial Tractor Run committee, Banteer Macra na Feirme as well as family members of Ned Tarrant, presented the Irish Community Air Ambulance with €12,000 from their recent tractor run.

The committee issued a thank you on the run’s facebook page to everyone who attended on the day of the tractor run, everyone who helped out on the day & all the businesses who supported this years tractor run. They gave a special thank you to Moll Carthy’s Bridge Bar, Kilcorney, for their hospitality on the day of the tractor run & for their presentation on the night.

Established in 2018, the run had a very successful first two years but had to be put on hiatus, as so many other local runs were, due to the global pandemic. In just three years of operating the Ned Tarrant Memorial Tractor Run has raised approximately €32.000 for a variety of local charities and organisations.

Second COVID-19 booster vaccine

People aged 65 years and over are now eligible for their second COVID-19 booster vaccine. Those with a weak immune system aged 12 and over can also get their second booster, when it is due.

Those who are due their second COVID-19 booster vaccine can: Book a booster appointment online at HSE vaccination centre.

Participating GPs and Pharmacies will begin giving second boosters in the coming weeks Visit https://www.hse.ie/eng/ for more information The HSE encourages everyone in these two groups who has already had their first booster to get their second booster dose when they become eligible. This second booster will give you the best protection from serious illness caused by COVID-19.

Dr Colm Henry, Chief Clinical Officer, HSE, said: “We are now offering a second booster vaccine to those aged 65 years and over and those who are immunocompromised, and I am urging everyone in these groups to get this second booster dose.”

“People being recommended this second booster are those most at risk of severe illness from COVID-19. It is important you get your second booster to help maintain your protection from becoming seriously ill or needing hospital treatment if you catch the virus.”

If you have a weak immune system People aged 12 years and older who have a weak immune system previously had one additional dose of vaccine and were also offered a first booster dose earlier in 2022.

Most people in this group are not yet due to have a second booster, and the HSE will issue SMS reminders to people in this group as their second boosters become due over the coming weeks.

Interval between first and second booster If you are 65 or over, you should get your second booster at least 4 months (at least 120 days) after your first booster. You can check the date of your last booster on your digital COVID-19 certificate.

If you have had COVID-19 in the last 4 months You should get your second booster dose at least 4 months after your positive test result or when your symptoms started Going to the vaccination centre Please bring a photo ID with you.

Examples of ID include passport, driver’s licence, Garda age card, student/school ID etc. but if your ID does not include your date of birth, please bring proof of your date of birth (e.g. your birth cert).

What vaccine will I get?

If you are 30 years or older you will be offered a single booster dose of the Moderna COVID 19 vaccine at the HSE vaccination centres and over the coming weeks from GPs and Pharmacies.

If you are 29 years or younger, we will offer you a single dose of the Pfizer vaccine. These are mRNA vaccines. NIAC has recommended people are given a mRNA vaccine for this second booster dose, and it is safe to receive if you previously had a different vaccine.

Video explaining second booster You can watch this video with Dr Eimear Hayes, Senior Medical Officer from the HSE National Immunisation Office. In the video Dr Hayes answers questions about the second booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine for people aged 12 and older who have a weak immune system and those aged 65 and older and explains their recommended COVID-19 vaccination course. Information about the recommended vaccine schedule for COVID-19 is available from the National Immunisation Office Website.

Stay safe COVID-19 is still with us. These are important things that we can all keep doing to help reduce infection: isolate if you are symptomatic (even if you are fully vaccinated and boosted) or if you are diagnosed with COVID-19 complete your primary and booster programme of vaccination continue to manage risk for yourself and others who are more vulnerable. You can do this by wearing masks, physical distancing and avoiding crowds as well as maintaining basic hand and respiratory hygiene Treatment for people at the highest risk from COVID-19 Medicines are starting to become available to treat people with COVID-19 (coronavirus) who are at the highest risk of becoming seriously ill. You’ll be told by your doctor or consultant if these medicines are for you and other COVID-19 medicines are expected to become available soon. It’s a good idea to be aware if you are in a higher risk group for COVID-19.

#Sicapstories: Paediatric First Aid Course

By STEPHANIE MOYNIHAN Following on from similar courses we ran in previous years, we saw the return of one of our most popular community education offerings in May 2022: The Paediatric First Aid Course.

This program was once again very popular and extremely well attended targeted at health care staff, parents & relatives who would like to be best able to respond to a crisis involving children of all ages, but particularly up to 5 years of age. The engaged and enthusiastic parents attending the workshop stated that they felt better equipped and informed should emergency situations arise in their own homes.Participants can recognise emergency

first aid situations in infants & small children as well as learn basic life saving techniques.

Other topics included, choking, unconsciousness, burns, the recovery position, performing infant CPR and many more.

IRD Duhallow’s The Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP)

2018 – 2022, provides funding to tackle poverty and social exclusion through local engagement and partnerships between disadvantaged individuals, community organisations and public sector agencies.

Administered by Pobal and funded by the Irish Government through the Department of Rural and Community Development, it also receives funding from the European Social Fund under the Programme for Employability, Inclusion and Learning (PEIL) 2014-2020.

Hope, Optimism and Confidence Communicating Europe - Celebrating European Citizenship

IRD Duhallow was delighted to have once again been awarded funding by the Department of Foreign Affairs Communicating Europe initiative (CEI) for voluntary organisations, educational bodies and civil society groups and bodies.

This funding enabled IRD Duhallow to introduce the “The Celebrating European Citizenship project “, which sought to work with local secondary schools in Duhallow in delivering an online workshop to transition year students on what Europe means to them as Irish citizens.

This online workshop took place in February 2022 and provided young people in Duhallow with the opportunity to have their views and voices heard by Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) who were invited to speak to the

students and respond to their questions that may arise. We were delighted to have MEPs Deirdre Clune and Billy Kelleher generously giving their time to join the discussion with three of our local secondary schools: Millstreet Community School, Colaiste Treasa, Kanturk, and Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore.

This event provided the MEPs with first-hand information on young peoples’ preferences and opinions and was very much enjoyed by all. It was a true joy to see the extensive preparations and contributions made by all participating students representing hope, optimism and confidence in the future the European Union.

Non-verbal communication during job interviews

By STEPHANIE MOYNIHAN Non-verbal communication is so very important during job interviews and below are a few things to keep in mind as you prepare for your job interview.

Non-verbal communication is essentially communications through body language and gestures, in essence all communications other than through the words we speak.

Maintaining good eye contact with our interviewers shows our genuine interest in the role, politeness and further reflects honesty and integrity.

Just like in other situations of communication, an appropriate level of eye contact with the other person shows that we are engaged in the conversation, are present and committed.

Smiling and nodding is another way of engaging in a non-verbal way with your interviewers.

Smiling is one of the very basic and probably one of the simplest way to bring across your personality, warmth and character.

By nodding, when appropriate, we do show that we are engaged in the conversation, that we are taking in the information and signalling the interviewer that we are listening and present in the moment. It is also very important to keep our gestures, poses and posture in check. Try not to slouch down in your seat but rather sit in an upright, comfortable position with your back fully supported. This will not only help you ground yourself and help you calm your nerves, but it also reflects professionalism and your commitment to succeed in this job interview.

Do not be daunted by the tips given to you this week, as you are most likely doing his thing is instinctively and naturally already.

Keep an open mind and try to be aware of your non-verbal communication and signals you are giving the interviewer.

Language Barriers

In recent weeks communities within the Duhallow area have continued with their great work to welcome Ukrainian families into the locality. The collective efforts of people who have donated items, time and skills have been invaluable. One particular area of expertise which has very much come to the fore relates to language support and translation.

While several of people arriving from the Ukraine already have good functional standards of English, it has become evident to IRD Duhallow’s support staff working on the ground, that some Ukrainian people will need extra support in this regard.

Language barriers, like all barriers to communication, can be frustrating. They require patience, understanding, and conscientiousness to overcome.

A few helpful tips that we can all bear in mind when faced with a communication barrier are as follows: • Keep the pace and flow of conversation under review – by not rushing and taking the time to enunciate words clearly, communication may flow better.

• If necessary double check and reflect back for clarification - it is important that you check your understanding of what the person you are speaking to has said. This is to ensure that that you are clear that you are aware of the message that they had wanted to convey.

Furthermore it is always a good idea to ensure that people have understood what you have said to confirm everyone is completely clear on what has been discussed.

• Be specific in what you are saying – where a communication barrier exists it

can be more effective to give concise information rather that an overwhelming amount of excess information.

• Try to avoid idioms or phrases which may make it more difficult for language to be understood, these phrases may seem common place in day to day conversations, however they may also lead to miscommunication occurring (e.g. ‘go the extra mile’, ‘sit tight’, ‘neither here nor there’ etc.)

• Choose a different medium of communication if there is a difficulty– for example if necessary write down the word that is causing the issue, draw a diagram or if an interpreter is available seek their assistance if possible. Also useful are online translation resources, such as Google Translate. This facility is readily accessible to many people due to the widespread availability of smart phones.

Eco-Schemes 2023

Eco-Schemes which will replace the conventional Greening payment farmers traditional received will be introduced from 2023 onwards. It will be mandatory for European Union member states to introduce Eco-Schemes, however, it will be voluntary for farmers to join these schemes within member states. Funded through Pillar 1, 25% of the direct payments allocation will be ring fenced for funding of eco-schem es.

To prevent this full allocation of funding not been drawn down the eco-scheme payment can increase in the payment per hectare if all eligible BISS applicants do not subsequently apply for the eco-schemes. The general conscientious is approximately 85% of eligible herd numbers will apply for Eco-Schemes.

Subject to ratification from the EU Commission there will be a list of 8 agricultural practises put forward as options for Eco-Schemes by the DAFM which are deemed beneficial for climate, environment, water quality and biodiversity.

Eco-Scheme payments are funded to farmers as interventions which go beyond the mandatory conditionality requirements as set out in the Good Agricultural and Environmental Conditions (GAEC).

There will be an annual payment per hectare with the farmer having the option to opt in or out on an annual basis. To qualify for the Eco-Scheme payments, the BISS (Replacing the BPS application in 2023) applicant must deliver two agricultural practises or options.

According to the DAFM if all 129,000 eligible herd numbers active in the country apply for the Eco-Scheme the payment rate

will be €66 per eligible hectare.

Depending on uptake this payment per hectare will possibly increase.

For example, if only 85% of the active herd numbers opt in the payment rate will be €77 per hectare. Subject to approval by the commission the proposed Eco – Schemes are briefly outlined here.

Option 1 Allocating Space for Nature: As discussed in part 1 last week conditionality under GAEC for every active farmer currently stands at 4% space for nature. If selecting this option for the EcoScheme a farmer must leave 7% of the holding as space for nature.

Increasing to the enhanced option of 10% space for nature will count as two options for the Eco-Scheme and full payment for hectare.

Option 2 Extensive Livestock Production: To be eligible to select this option a livestock farmer must have a minimum of 0.10 LU/ ha up to a maximum of 1.5 LU/ Ha. Stocking rates to qualify for this option will be based on the reference year of 2022.

Option 3 Limiting Chemical Fertiliser Use: This option will be based on bands ranging from >90 Kgs Organic N /Ha to >210 Kgs Organic N/Ha. For example, if a herd is stocked in the 91 – 130 Kg’s Organic N/Ha in 2022 they

will have a chemical nitrogen limit of 89 Kg’s/Ha. The DAFM will be introducing a chemical fertiliser register for purchases linked to the herd number in 2023 to administer this option.

Option 4 Planting of Native Trees and Hedgerows: A farmer must plant 3 native trees per hectare or 1 metre of hedgerow per hectare. An enhanced option is available whereby a farmer plants 6 trees or 2 metres of hedgerow or 3 native trees and 1 metre of hedgerow per hectare.

This will quality as two options and full payment per hectare for the scheme.

Option 5 The Use of GPS controlled spreader and/ or sprayer: At least 60% of the chemical fertiliser and/or plant protection products must be applied annually using this equipment where the machinery is either owned or is a contractor service.

Option 6 Soil sampling and appropriate liming: Soil sampling must be carried out on all eligible hectares on the holding with appropriate liming applied as per the recommendations of the soil analysis report. This option is only available once every three years.

Option 7 Planting of a break crop: Tillage farmers must plant 20% of the eligible holding with either beans, peas, OSR or oats or a combination of these crops.

Option 8 Multi Species Sward: Multi Species Swards must be sown on 6% of the eligible hectares on the holding in the year the option is selected.

In summary the Eco-Schemes will be introduced in 2023 on a voluntary basis whereby a farmer must select two options from the list above to qualify. It must be noted the options listed above are subject to approval by the EU Commission.

101 Years Later, The Banteer

Sunday, April 24th saw the unveiling of a monument at Father Murphy’s Bridge, Banteer, Co. Cork. It commemorates the Banteer Ambush that occurred on March 8th, 1921. It is a little known event, obscured by the later, more well known Nadd Ambush (featured in this magazine in Issue 37).

The Banteer Ambush saw a group of Irish volunteers from the surrounding area ambush a mixed patrol of RIC officers and

‘Black and Tans’ at the bridge from the upper surrounding fields.

The one fatality of the ambush was an RIC Constable Nicholas Somers; a Catholic farmer from Wexford who came from a relatively prosperous background.

After the others in the patrol surrendered, the volunteers emerged from their cover and rounded them up.

Dr. Padraig Óg Ó Ruairc, in his oration, talked about the attempts of many to rewrite history. This is a surprisingly prevalent thing that we can see happening but it must be resisted. It is important that

the War of Independence is told without apology. The suggestion some time ago that the “enemy” of that time could be honoured also was unacceptable to the majority of Irish people.

It is over a century later but the wounds are still there. Our country is still not fully ours but this decade is a time we honour the brave men and women who died fighting for our freedom.

Many thanks to everyone involved in donating and setting up the event and erecting such a beautiful monument.

What Motivates You?

Exam season is fast approaching. Stress, pressure and anxiety usually come with it. This can be said not only for the student doing the exams, but also for the people around them who are trying to be supportive but may struggle to understand the thoughts and feeling involved when their own exams are a distant memory.

Students who are often very accomplished, organised and driven can feel more pressure than other students who may appear less driven. Why is this? Why do some students feel more pressure, need to prove themselves more than others? Why do some strive for perfection when others can experience exams without feeling

like this?

The answer lies in the kind of achiever you are; you can be motivated to achieve things in different ways and for different reasons. For example• Value achievers. People who fall into this group like to achieve things because they value the achievement itself. In other words, the achievement beings them great pleasure. They derive pleasure and confidence from the effort they put in and the work they do.

• Need achievers. This group is just as motivated as the group who value the achievement but for different reasons. They get less pleasure from the achievement itself and seek validation, applause and praise from others. This can be problematic when you rely on

others to provide that validation.

Another issue with needs achievers is that when the praise for their activity lessens they quickly stop doing it.

Of course there is nothing wrong either of these approaches if it provides motivation. It is important however, to examine goals and values because seeking validation from others can often lead to disappointment. It can make you feel that your achievements are not good enough. When you value your own efforts and praise yourself, you can develop selfconfidence that will last you well after your exams are done. So, when the exams are over- and that time will come, even if you cannot see it now- remember, you have worked hard, you have tried your best and the rest is out of your hands.

Creating Exercise Habits

My answer: the one you can do consistently. Boring I know, but that’s the truth!

Doing something that you dislike is probably going to fail. For a habit to stick, it needs to be something you enjoy.

To make an exercise habit stick, I believe there are three main principles to follow 1. Make it a ritual Like early morning exercise? Have your clothes laid out the night before.

Prefer to exercise in the evening?

Book a class for you when you are on your way home from work, you

are less likely to make the excuse not to go when it is on your way home.

Making it part of a ritual makes it more likely that you will stick to it.

2. Book it in the diary Schedule your exercise like you would a dentist appointment. Commit to a day and time and put it in your diary.

Doing something with a friend not only makes you more accountable but exercise can also become something social for you.

3. Start small So small that you can’t fail. Start with 10 squats while the kettle boils. Go for a 5-minute walk. Build this habit for a week and then start

adding on a little bit more.

Are your dog’s or cat’s vaccinations overdue?

I know that the past 2 years of the pandemic have flown by – in ways we all seem to have lost track of a lot of our normal yearly routines amidst all the upheaval. We all were worried and had a lot on our minds, and as a result many of our normal practices fell by the wayside.

In many cases, a pet’s annual vaccination and health check may have been one such task that may have been forgotten. However, now that normality has resumed, it’s time to get our pet’s routine healthcare back on track to avoid issues down the line.

Firstly, I have noticed that many pet owners have lost track of when their pet’s vaccinations were due during the upheaval, meaning that their pet’s boosters may now be overdue. Vaccination boosters are

due every year to protect your pet from serious infectious disease and avoid the heartbreak of losing your pet to a preventable virus.

There is nothing worse as a vet than seeing a dog die from lepto, a viral disease common in our local area, when it is completely preventable. Getting annual vaccinations back up to date normally takes a series of two shots, usually a few weeks apart.

Secondly, in missing your pet’s annual vaccination, they may well

have missed out on their annual health check-up that would usually take place during the vaccination appointment. This check is essential for picking up on early signs of disease so that positive action can be taken sooner rather than later and for answering your questions about your pet’s health and lifestyle. In older pets, I would recommend a check-up with your vet every 6 months, as older pets are more prone to silent onset of diseases.

There is no shame in having missed out on vaccinations or health checks over the past two years – we are all only human, and it was a very stressful time for everyone. Please don’t worry that your vet will be in any way grumpy with you for forgetting your pet’s vaccination or check – we are only delighted to see you and your pet back in the clinic as that gives us all the best shot at helping your pet live a long and healthy life.

Mother’s Day celebrations in the James O’Keeffe Institute

By STEPHANIE MOYNIHAN Funded through with the Dormant Accounts funding for Family and Voluntary carers, IRD Duhallow was delighted to host a Mother’s Day coffee morning for Carers in Duhallow, which took place on the 28th of March 2022 and was well attended and enjoyed by all.

Alongside delicious treats served

by Duhallow Community Food Services, all Carers in attendance were delighted to take home a pampering surprise bag with little treats to sweeten their day.

We were also delighted to have Kristina from Croi Beauty, Newmarket treating our Ladies to a manicure, all here in the James O’Keeffe Institute. A wonderful morning full of chatter, laughter and of course, delicious sweet

and savoury food was the perfect way to celebrate Mother’s Day. All those interested in joining our activities for Family and Voluntary Carers are wholeheartedly invited to join us at our meetings on the first Thursday of every month at 8pm in the James O’Keeffe Institute.

May - The Month of Our Blessed Mother Mary

By TOM DENNEHY May is one of the most beautiful months of the year when hedgerows are in full bloom and nature gives glory to God. May is also a very special month because we honour Mary, our Blessed Mother. We want to give thanks to Mary because she loves us and protects us.

Mary is the one who said Yes to God’s plan for the salvation of the entire world. Her “Yes” gave birth to God’s son, Jesus, which enabled Him to come down from Heaven and become one of us. He taught us how to love and forgive and He died on the cross for us.

Jesus gave us His Mother at the foot of the cross when He said to St. John, “Behold your mother.”

John 19:27.

Mary as Mother of Sorrows understands all our pain and suffering as her heart was pierced as she watched her Son die on the cross. One of the great devotions to Mary is The Seven Sorrows of Mary which can be recited every day and attaches great promises.

Mary loves us all dearly. She tells us in Medjugorje, “If you knew how much I love you, you would cry with joy”.

She is our protector from all evil influences. When we recite the litany in the rosary, we honour her with fifty different titles She is Mediatrix of all graces- the dispenser of all graces from on high. One of her titles is “Mother of Divine Grace”.

She is continuously interceding for us.

Mary has appeared more than two thousand times all over the world. Many of these are private apparitions. We are familiar with Lourdes, Fatima and Medjugorje, all places of

pilgrimage and miraculous healing.

Her appearance at Knock gave us great hope during a very difficult time in our history.

She asks us to pray for the conversion of sinners and she wants to bring us all to know and to love her Son Jesus truly present at Mass in the Holy Eucharist.

Power of the Rosary.

The rosary is our greatest prayer next to the Holy Mass.

It is our greatest weapon to bring about peace in the world ravaged by war in these times.

We can help Our Lady to overcome the battle against evil in the world and she has promised us, “In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph.”

By praying the rosary, Mary, as Queen of Heaven and Earth will intercede for us. We give our prayer to her for her intentions, and she will give our prayers to Jesus. St. Louise De Montford in his teachings on Mary tells us that without Mary, our

actions and intentions are of little value but if we go to Jesus through Mary, our work will be Mary’s work and consequently it will be “most worthy of God”.

There are fifteen specific promises attached to the rosary given by Our Lady to Saint Dominic.

Our Lady tells us nothing is impossible by praying the rosary.

We show our love for Mary when we pray the rosary, we bring great peace into our lives. We meditate on the life, death and resurrection of Jesus and Mary’s role as Mother of God and our mother. In all her apparitions, she pleads with us to pray the rosary every day.

We sing beautiful songs in her honour. “Bring flowers of the rarest, bring blossoms the fairest……Queen of the Angels and Queen of the May”.

So, for the month of May, let us all make a special effort. Switch off your phone and turn off the television. However, busy your day is, you can surely spend some time with Our Lady. Create a May altar in your home and adorn it with flowers and a statue of Mary.

Why not pray the rosary (even if you begin with one decade) when you are at home or driving along in your car or going for a walk. We encounter a peace that only God can give, no matter how anxious or troubled we may be. It will change your world and the lives of those around you.

Where are all the Aliens?

At the start of the 20th century an Italian by the name of Marconi began experimenting with wireless telegraphy. Soon after, wireless telephony and radio broadcasting were developed.

Since those early days, humans have been pumping out radio, television, and communications signals from our planet in an everincreasing quantity and strength.

Like a wave that travels outward when a stone is thrown into water, radio, and TV signals travel by electromagnetic wave at the speed of light in an everexpanding sphere away from the earth. Theoretically, anyone with a powerful enough receiver on another planet would be able to eavesdrop on us. So how likely is this, and if they are listening, are they coming to visit?

Our earliest communications have been traveling at the speed of light away from earth for over 100 years. Within that time, they

would have passed in the order of 15,000 stars, about 1000 of which are similar to our own sun.

Our best guess is that 1 in 5 of all sun like stars have earth like planets in orbit around them, at the correct distance from their sun to have liquid water and therefore be capable of supporting life. So that is a possible 200 earth like planets, capable of hosting life, that could

Since we have only one example of life in the universe, we don’t know if it’s common for life to arise. It could be that earth hosts the sole sample of life in the universe, and we are the best the universe can come up with.

Either way, predicting how common life is on earth like planets, and how often Intelligent civilisations develop, is guess work. But being optimistic and picking figures at random, let’s say life arises on one out of every 500 earth like planets and intelligent life arises once from every 2000 examples of life. This means that intelligent life arises just once in every million of those earth-like planets capable of supporting life.

Given that our estimate is just 200 earth like planets capable of hosting life, I wouldn’t be rolling out the red carpet just yet in preparation from an eavesdropping E.T.. On the off chance that someone has heard our chatter, it would take an eternity to get here, assuming of course, they haven’t developed the warp drive!!!

Wanted: Dead or Alive

For the second outing of the Dollars trilogy, Sergio Leone gets into the groove and Clint Eastwood teams up with another western icon to hunt down some bad guys in the terrific For a Few Dollars More (1965) After the success of A Fistful of Dollars, spaghetti westerns were in hot demand so Sergio Leone, along with star Clint Eastwood, were given free reign to make another western and with that, they gave us the more expansive For a Few Dollars More. The story follows two bounty hunters with the same intentions who team up to track down an escaped Mexican outlaw.

Joining Eastwood for this adventure is the legendary Lee Van Cleef. The story of how he came to be in this movie is as legendary as the movie itself. Van Cleef was never a star, he was

releasing our heroes deliberately after they have been captured. His mentality reminds me of a more current tyrant operating in the world today...

Here, you really see Leone really experimenting with style; relishing in the set piece (a scene or sequence of scenes whose execution requires complex logistical planning and considerable expenditure of money); shooting and cutting it all to Ennio Morricone’s fantastic score. Just look at Van Cleef hunting down his first bounty in the opening sequence and of course, the final duel. Leone’s duel started relatively small in Fistful but you see it getting grander here. It would reach truly epic proportions in The Good the Bad and the Ugly but here it’s pretty epic too.

someone you would see in the background of a scene, High Noon for example. But he had such a distinctive face and look. Leone had always remembered him and so he wanted him for this movie.

Apparently, around this time, Van Cleef’s career was suffering due to drinking. Legend has it Leone heard he was staying in a certain motel so he sent an assistant with

a case of money. The assistant met Van Cleef outside the motel, offered him the money and Van Cleef accepted. The rest is movie history. Van Cleef, over the next ten years, became a spaghetti western superstar in Europe.

He’s really one of the great icons of the genre. His story is an example of how one should never underestimate the memory of a cineaste. Director Quentin Tarantino has always had that reputation of reviving people’s careers, but he just knows what those actors are capable of, having watched them all his life. Leone was the same.

Van Cleef and Eastwood have a great chemistry; potential enemies at the beginning, partners at the end. Fellow Fistful alum, Gian Marie Volonte, returns again as the bad guy and he’s great as well. His character is notable as an early example of someone smoking marijuana onscreen though it’s never referred to as such. It’s also interesting to watch his character self destruct; pitting his own gang against each other,
