EDITORS NOTE This edition brings us a host of good news following Easter!

Ukranian families are settling in the area, and work continues to ensure the success in families integrating. We also get a look at the many entries into our Easter Egg Competition - so much incredible work! And the winners are revealed! There’s also a little passport reminder in our community pages.

Easter gives us a chance at renewal - maybe you kept going with your lent fast, and now you don’t miss your vice.

Maybe you returned to it with new appreciation.

Both offer new outlooks. There’s a sense that New Years is the only time for resolutions, but a change in all things - attitude, lifestyle, outlook - it can come whenever you choose.

After a turbulent Easter and as restrictions lift, we should look forward to a year of working to help new members of the community, to make those little things count, and to see the joy in the mundane.

Dawn Chorus Walk

Adults €10.00 Children free On Saturday morning April 30th, Castlemagner Sinsir Club will host their Annual Dawn Chorus Walk. This well established special Bealtaine event will begin at 4.30am.

Are you up for the treat? The walk will proceed to the Ardine Bridge and the surrounding countryside of Gneeves North and Kilpatrick. The route is approximately 3 miles in length. The walk will be led by ornithologist and bird watch expert Vivian O’Gorman. Now an established tradition, a full Irish barbecued breakfast will be served at Castlemagner Community Centre on completion of the walk. This is included in the fee.

An optional novelty quiz with simple prizes will take place during the breakfast, based on information given by the speaker during the walk. Please wear appropriate footwear and clothing including a high visibility vest.

Registration will be taken on the morning of the walk.

Scoil Mhuire Update

Scoil Mhuire Kanturk Lidl’s #SeriousSupport Schools Programme

In November we were delighted to announce that our school was the only Cork school selected to participate in the Lidl’s #SeriousSupport Schools Programme for the 2021-22 school year. Scoil Mhuire Kanturk was nominated by the public through completing an online nomination form using the unique code on the bottom of Lidl receipts. At the beginning of April, our girls completed workshop 1 with Cork footballer Orlagh Farmer. In this workshop the girls were taught about the importance of lifelong participation in physical activity while also getting the opportunity to work on their football skills. The school was also presented with a set of jerseys. We look forward to welcoming Orlagh back for our second workshop in May.

National Tree Week Celebrated in Rockchapel

National Tree Week commenced on Sunday 20th March 2022 and was celebrated with wild intent in the parish of Rockchapel.

After a year or so of training and organising, 862 native Irish trees and fruiting bushes were planted throughout the parish. The week was punctuated with various tree planting events, which began with a Knockaclarig National School lead initiative, supported by the newly formed Rockchapel Heritage Group and local volunteers.

Saturday 26th March saw the bulk of the action, where community members, again supported by

the Rockchapel Heritage Group and by Rockchapel Community Development, planted oak and rowan within the village along the bank of the river Feale.

Rockchapel GAA organised a significant event which contributed greatly to the overall quantity of trees planted that weekend.

Gratitude must be extended to the Rockchapel Community Centre for opening their doors to our village contingent on the day, to Murphy’s Shop and the Church for their continued support in facilitating the communication of training and planting events and to Neily Curtin for his beautiful photography.

We wish to offer a sincere thank you to IRD Duhallow for organising training and offering support through the LEADER funded programme “Communities Planting for Biodiversity”. Evidently the resounding success of National Tree Week in Rockchapel can be attributed to the support and cooperation of its various volunteers, community groups and organisations. Akin to the global response required for both the Climate and Biodiversity crisis, significant efforts from all cohorts of society are required for us to have a fighting chance in preserving and regenerating

our natural heritage. By extension, Rockchapel Heritage Group intend further planting events to take place in late 2022. There are several prospective projects in the pipeline centred around enhancing community awareness of the river Feale and developing associated amenities.

We wish to thank once again all those who collaborated in recent efforts and look forward to many successful future initiatives.

Rockchapel is well endowed with its natural heritage so here’s to celebrating it, long into the future!

The Spirit of Duhallow: Fam

On the 24th February, war broke out in Ukraine when Russia launched its attack and life changed. Not just in Ukraine, but across the world. Ireland has opened its door to those fleeing the war, Duhallow included.

Ukrainian families have started to relocate and settle into communities across the region and it is lovely to see how communities and neighbours have come out to welcome them.

Undoubtedly, they have been through unimaginable horrors and experiences to get here, and we cannot underestimate how traumatic and life changing all of this has been for them. Coupled

with a different language is a different culture, education system, health system etc. IRD Duhallow has been working on the ground to reach out to them in an effort to get information to such families and help them access supports they are entitled to as well as start to settle into the area.

Urgent Calls for donations and volunteering were put out on social media and the people of Duhallow did not let us down. Instead we were inundated with offers of help, donations of clothes, toys etc. as well as offers to translate with a surprisingly large number of people being able to speak Russian, one of Ukraine’s most common languages. This has proven invaluable to us.

It is heart-warming to see such

a response. It is this spirit of volunteerism which we are seeing that will really help our new friends to get settled here faster. Some children have already started school in the region both primary and secondary and again local schools were only too willing to help. To see local children immediately welcome and engage with Ukrainian kids through fun and play and not through language made us all realise how possible this all is.

Last weekend the community of Banteer were given short notice to take some refugees into their community facility as a short term rest centre. An unimaginable effort of voluntary work was undertaken over a short number of days.

amilies Settle In The Area backgrounds coming out to offer their time willing to do anything to help. With a plan currently being put in place to organise different activities for the new residents of Banteer, once again we know we will see all the local sports clubs coming out together to help with this. If there are other groups or individuals in the region willing to help out in delivering such activities also we would love to hear from you.

Millstreet is next on the list with a much larger number of refugees expected into the town in the coming days. For the Duhallow region, it is undoubtedly a big ask to take another 300-400 refugees.

However, as a region this is where we will need all the communities to help the communities of Millstreet

and Banteer. Local clubs and organisations will need to step up and help to make this Duhallow wide response a success.

As a region we have a large number of employers with many looking for skilled workers in a wide number of sectors. We are currently undertaking a skills audit of those Ukrainians already here and our job centre will match them with such vacancies. A survey has already gone out to a vast number of employers in the region to help collate this information.

Accommodation and transport are without question the 2 biggest obstacles in the way of helping these people settle in Duhallow.

We are asking local employers to consider what accommodation is in your area that you could source

for potential employees. Local Link Cork has come on board in the short term with IRD Duhallow to help provide transport from Banteer to Kanturk so they can access local shops, post office etc in the town.

Kateryna’s Experience

Life was divided into “before” and “after” on February 24th. My family was forced to flee the house in Irpin, Kyiv suburb in Ukraine after Russian brutal military attack.

That day I could not even imagine splitting up from my husband and ending 3000 km away from home in Ireland with two kids just a few weeks after.

Anxiety, horror, hatred, grief were common emotions experienced back those days, leaving little chance to “pulling yourself together” and “getting back to normal”. At some point the strong desire to secure my little sons` physical and mental health prevailed over difficulties and fears of leaving for another country. Unfortunately, there was no safe place in Ukraine.

Ireland has welcomed my family with open arms and compassionate support. We were happily settled with a great family. Kids were signed up for the local school, already got friends, who are helping them to integrate. Our experience has been very positive. The people we met are phenomenal.

We finally feel safe and eternally thankful for all the care and support!

De-clutter to De-stress

Spring is well and truly upon us and that means the arrival of the spring-clean.

We are shaking off the layers of winter and emerging to notice our dirty windows, uncut grass, stacks of laundry and all the junk in the shed. If only Mrs. Hinch and her ‘tap to tidy’ really worked.

We live in a world that values material things, we put our happiness and our goals into the next ‘thing’ we can buy. This makes us believe that the more we have, the happier we can be.

That may be true but where do we put it all? How does all the clutter effect our emotions and our stress levels?

Emotional attachment, sentimentality and fear of getting rid of items make it hard for us to face de-cluttering as we tend to infuse our belongings with our past memories and our emotions.

So, how do we define clutter?

Clutter can be defined as anything that no longer serves a purpose, things that do not have a rightful place, things that are broken or in need of repair or items that cause mess or chaos. Even items that we no longer wear or don’t fit us any longer.

Clutter can have a negative effect on our mental health.

Making it difficult to think clearly, contributing to stress and reducing our motivation. Especially when we believe the job of de-cluttering is just too over-whelming. Clutter can

also make us view our home in a negative way- our homes should be our sanctuary, our safe retreatbut when our home is cluttered and chaotic we can avoid going home or even begin to dislike it.

With a home full of clutter we can find it very hard to find the space to do the restful and relaxing things that our home should be used for. For example, we cannot sit and read a book if we have no space. It is not possible to practice our yoga if we are triggered by a continue mess around us.

So, now is the time. Buy the bin bags and fill them. Head to your nearest recycling centre and deposit your contribution and resist the temptation to bring more in to replace the clutter you just removed.

Itchiness in Pets

One of the most common ailments we encounter in everyday veterinary practice is the itchy pet.

Often, the pet parent will have noticed their pet itching obviously and will have brought them for an appointment for that very reason, but sometimes pets will present for a different issue entirely and we as vets will pick up on a few tell-tale signs during our physical examination that they pet may be feeling an itch.

Usually when people think of pets itching, they think of the classic appearance of a pet using a back leg to vigorously scratch

the body or ears, however itching may manifest in a few subtle ways. Dogs and cats may itch themselves by dragging their body or head against a rough surface such as a carpet, they may lick or nibble at their feet, or they may bite and lick at the skin and fur on their bodies. In the case of ear disease, they may also frequently shake their heads.

During your vet’s examination, they may pick up on more subtle reddening and inflammation of the skin, the presence of broken hairs (broken due to itching and biting), hair loss, or even saliva staining of the hair from excessive licking which appears as a red/brown staining of the hair in light coloured dogs.

Itching may be caused by parasites such as fleas, mites or lice, bacterial infections, yeast overgrowths or even allergies to something in your pet’s environment such as pollens or food. Getting to the bottom of the problem may need some detective work of the part of your vet, but it is well worth the effort to eliminate the itch and see your pet return to being comfortable.

Natural Remedies for Insomnia Insomnia is a common condition. It causes people to have problems falling asleep at night or to wake in the middle of the night and not be able to go back to sleep.

We are hosting an Insomnia Evening on Tuesday 10th May at 6:45pm at New Leaf Health Store in Kanturk where we will be looking in more detail at some of the remedies to alleviate it and we’ll also be welcoming Irene Ryan, Clinical Hypnotherapist and Sleep Therapist, to provide practical tips and techniques to help overcome sleep problems.

There’s a huge range of sleep remedies and some suit certain

people better than others.

One of the old traditional herbs that is used to treat insomnia is Valerian. There has been a lot of research done on this herb over the years and the results suggest that valerian root can improve sleep and reduce anxiety in many people. Valerian has been found to help people fall asleep faster, improve their sleep quality, and spend more time in a deep sleep stage.

Lemon Balm is another popular remedy for sleep.

It alleviates stress and can help to calm the mind, often it is a racing mind that is keeping you

Devotion to the Divine Mercy

We celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday on the first Sunday after Easter. It is now an important feast day in the Church calendar.

Saint Faustina, a wonderful Polish nun, was born of a poor family and had only two years of formal education. During her short life, she suffered the Passion of Christ for the salvation of souls.

The Image of Divine Mercy On 22 February 1931, Jesus appeared to St. Faustina dressed in a white robe and asked her to paint the image that she had been shown with the signature, Jesus I Trust in You - Jesus with His right hand raised in blessing, with the other touching His breast. From the opening in the garment at the breast came forth red and pale rays. Later Jesus explained to her “The pale ray stands for the Water which make souls righteous and the red rays stand for the Blood which is the life of souls. These rays issued forth from the debts of my most tender mercy at that time when my agonising Heart was opened by a lance on the cross…”

St. Faustina, known as the Apostle of Divine Mercy, has given us a great insight into the ocean of God’s unfathomable mercy for mankind in her diary, “Divine Mercy in my Soul.”

Jesus asked her to do whatever was in her power to spread devotion to His Mercy and to tell “aching” mankind to come close to His merciful Heart and he would fill them with peace.

Divine Mercy Feast Day: Jesus asked her specifically for a Feast Day celebrating His Divine Mercy. “I desire that the feast of Mercy… be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter…

The soul that will go to Confession

and receive Holy Communion (in a state of grace on this day) shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and all punishment.”

Saint Faustina saw Jesus more than sixty times during Adoration and the Celebration of Holy Mass signifying the great power and presence of Jesus during Holy Mass and Adoration.

Jesus promised that anything we ask for by praying the Divine Mercy chaplet will be granted provided it is “Compatible with My will”.

When to pray The Divine Mercy: We can pray the Divine Mercy any time but especially at 3 o clock (hour of great mercy) and when we are uniting ourselves with the great sacrifice of Jesus on the cross to God Our Father in atonement for the sins of the whole world.

Promise to the dying: “When they say this chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between my father and the dying person, not as a just judge but as a merciful Saviour.”

“Say unceasingly the chaplet that I have thought you. Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy the hour of death.

“Priests will recommend it to sinners as the last hope. Even the most hardened sinner, if he recites the Chaplet even once, will receive grace from my infinite Mercy. I want the whole world to know my infinite Mercy. I want to give unimaginable graces to those who trust in My Mercy.” Diary 687 What Jesus wants most from us is our trust in His Divine Mercy.

The more we trust, the more powerful our prayer. We should repeat often, “Jesus I trust in you.”

The Man with No Name

Sergio Leone changes action cinema forever and makes westerns rock and roll in the first of his immortal dollars trilogy; A Fistful of Dollars (1964) A Fistful of Dollars really did change action cinema forever.

The western hero was no longer the clean cut, seemingly invincible guy like Gary Cooper or John Wayne. The hero now seemed to be morally ambivalent, dressed in a hip way for the 60s, and his attitude seemed to be one of indifference. He was an anti hero; not a bad guy per say, but, compared to the really bad guys, was a saint in comparison.

Growing up in Italy watching and loving American westerns, director Sergio Leone ended up influencing and changing the very genre in his wake. He also helped launch a tall, handsome T.V. star onto the big screen.

Clint Eastwood plays a nameless stranger who rides into a town known for the deadly rivalry between two of its factions - the Baxter’s and the Rojo’s. Instead of fearing for his life, the man plays the two sides to his own advantage.

Leone based his story on Akira Kurasawa’s equally legendary movie Yojimbo (1961). Leone hadn’t sought proper permission to borrow the plot so Kurawsawa ended up suing and won, resulting in a big sum of money.

It didn’t matter - A Fistful of Dollars was a huge success all

around the world. Leone didn’t create the spaghetti western (a term coined for westerns made in Italy), there were a few made before him, but he certainly revolutionised it. He had such a unique style; extreme close-ups of the most memorable faces ever put on film mixed with extreme long shots. It was also a rougher western for it’s time. This movie opens with Eastwood riding on horseback into a town, he witnesses a group of men firing bullets at a little boy running crying to his mother, and what does he do? Nothing. I can only imagine what audiences felt watching this for the first time, but they seemed to dig it in a big way. A youthful 60’s audience embraced them with gusto.

Eastwood’s protagonist is given a right doing over by the baddies throughout the movie. Stephen Vega writes in his piece “For Only A Fistful Of Dollars – How A Low Budget Western Reinvented the Hollywood Hero” that: “In A Fistful of Dollars, something very different happens to the male hero/protagonist that hadn’t happened in earlier movies… he gets beaten to a pulp; he is no longer a superhuman, he is

simply human, vulnerable and male”. And that’s the big influence.

I’ve said it before but it’s true; iconic heroes we love take a battering, get up again, and finish the job.

The James Bond series had also exploded onto the scene around this time and you see it’s influence on the style, particularly the score. This would mark the first of many iconic collaborations Leone had with legendary music composer Ennio Morricone, and Morricone gives these westerns an almost rock and roll sound. The opening credits have this feel as well, they feel like a Bond opening credits. They just replace scantily clad women and a dapper spy with guns, cannons and men on horses.

Dollars showed audiences that the west was dirty and dangerous.

Characters didn’t seem to shave or even bathe in this world, and boy, was it rough. It’s Leone’s leanest film in terms of length and budget, but he would expand his cinematic canvas as he went on in terms of action set pieces. However here, seemingly from nowhere, Eastwood and Leone entered a town unknowns and exited it icons.

CAP 2023 - What To Expect

The Department of Agriculture, food and the Marine (DAFM) submitted the Draft CAP Strategic Plan (CSP) to the European Commission on the 31st of December 2021. The new CAP commences on the January 1st 2023 with the DAFM expecting to receive approval of the CSP sometime in September this year.

There will be a number of changes to the agricultural schemes commencing on January 1st 2023.

One of the major changes is the introduction of the Basic Income Support for Sustainability (BISS) and Eco Schemes to replace the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) and Greening respectively. As per the BPS application it will be mandatory to submit a BISS application annually to draw down eligible entitlements per hectare owned, leased or rented. The complimentary Redistributive Income Support for Sustainability (CRISS) will be introduced for all active famers with a valid BISS application submitted. This front loaded payment will be paid on the first 30 hectares at a value of €43 per hectare.

With respect to the value or entitlements all values will change in 2023 The value of entitlements will change to match a funding celling with a new average expected to be between €155 -160. Once convergence of entitlements is reached by 2026 it is expected all entitlements values will fall between €130 - €285.

There will be the introduction of a claw back mechanism around the sale and leasing of entitlements from 2023 onwards. An example of the claw back mechanism is the proposed imposition of a 10%

With regards capping there will be an 85% reduction in BISS payments between €60,000 and €100,000 on eligible entitlements. This will result in a maximum BISS payment of €66,000.

The DAFM propose to introduce an active farmer check under the new CAP. This will include a check to ensure the applicant is carrying out an agricultural activity. To be deemed an active livestock farmer you must pass the stacking rate check of 0.10 Livestock Units per hectare. This stocking rate check will also be used to trigger the Areas of Natural Constraints payment for farmers in ANC designated areas. Tillage farmers to be deemed active must provide evidence such as receipts, and, non-livestock farmers must provide evidence of maintenance or receipts from the sale of silage or hay. One new proposal put forward by the DAFM in the CSP is the introduction that up to 30% of a parcel can be made up of features beneficial to the climate

and the environment such as scrub and trees without the eligible area of the parcel being impacted.

However, it must be noted that according to the DAFM if these features were deemed ineligible in 2022 they will remain ineligible in 2023.

Conditionality under pins all Pillar 1 payments such as BISS, CRISS and the ANC. All eligible or active farmers must adhere to this conditionality through the Good Agricultural and Environmental Conditions (GAEC). For example, under GAEC 8 it will be a requirement for all active farmers to have 4% of lands declared made up of features beneficial to the climate and the environment.

These features can include hedges, drains, field margins and scrub.

This has been a brief overview of some of the changes expected in the new CAP subject to ratification from the EU commission. In the next edition we will outline some of the elements of the eco schemes and the new Agri-Environmental Climate Measures scheme to be introduced next year.

Pollinators play a huge role in enabling the growth of many plants found across Ireland. These include those which produce fruit and vegetables, along with many wildflowers that provide colour and beauty to the landscape. Most of the pollination that occurs in Ireland is carried out by our 98 bee species. These include the honeybee, 77 species of solitary bee, and 20 different bumblebees.

A variety of other insects, including butterflies and moths, also play an important role as pollinators.

Many of these pollinators now face a variety of pressures such as habitat loss, reduced food, and more severe weather events.

IN THE FRAME

The effects of these pressures can especially be seen in our bee populations, where a decline in numbers has been observed in over half of Irish bee species since 1980. On top of this, 30% of Irish bees were identified as threatened with extinction during the formation of the Irish Bee Red List.

No Mow May is a simple and effective way of giving our pollinators a helping hand by providing them with the food and shelter they need to survive.

Waiting until the end of May to start mowing allows for the growth of a variety of flowers such as dandelions, vetch, and red deadnettle, which are all important sources of food for pollinators.

Other actions we can take in our gardens to help pollinators include planting a range of pollinatorfriendly plants that flower across different times of the year, reducing mowing to a 6-week rotation to allow flowers such as clover to grow between mows, retaining small patches or strips of unmown long grass where wildflowers can grow, and carrying out manual weeding rather than using pesticides in our gardens.

Inclusive Workplaces

Ireland is a county which was once characterised by large scale emigration. John F. Kennedy on his presidential visit to Ireland in June 1963, said “Most countries sent out oil or iron, steel or gold or some other crop but Ireland has only one export, its people”. It is quite amazing to think that almost six decades later Ireland has become a multicultural nation where members of ethnic minority communities play a pivotal role in many sectors of the workforce.

There are a number of approaches that can be taken to ensuring that inclusion is kept to the forefront in the day to day activities within the workplace. One suggestion is that cultural awareness training

This can support an atmosphere of belonging and acceptance within a workplace, demonstrating that a workplace is progressive and positive place to work in.

Cultural diversity will continue to be an ongoing feature of Ireland’s workforce and the workplace can be an important agent of change in the progression of equality and diversity in Ireland. It is said that strength lies in differences not in similarities.

Individual differences may stem from race, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity, disability, age, gender, membership of the traveller community and marital status. The benefits of a diverse workplace cannot be overstated, ultimately any place of work which values integration and inclusivity is a better place to work.
