IRD Duhallow, as the Local Development Agency for this region has been tasked by the Department of Rural and Community Development to participate in a Community response to the Ukraine Crisis.

Ireland is expected to welcome 140,000 refugees into the country in time to come. In order to develop an informed

response to settling these people into our communities, we need to establish a register of available services in each of our communities.

IRD Duhallow Clg could like to connect with Ukranians currently living in the Duhallow, East Kerry, and Mid Cork region.

Irina is one of our fitness instructors at the centre, and provides Tai Chi classes and previously held Yoga Classes. She is originally from Ukraine and has family and friends there.

Have Your Say On The Management of Rivers

Ireland publishes a River Basin Management Plan every six years. This sets out the measures necessary to protect and improve the quality of our waters; rivers, estuaries, coastal waters, lakes, and groundwaters. A draft of the third River Basin Management Plan for Ireland has been created and is currently out for public consultation until 31st March. The greatest way to make a difference for biodiversity and for the environment is to influence policies and strategies (like the River Basin Management Plan). This is your chance to speak up and flag issues on your local waterbodies, highlight the importance of water to you and your community, and suggest new measures or

improvements to measures listed in the draft plan.

You can read the draft plan by going to www.gov.ie/ housing or by visiting LAWPRO’s website (www.lawaters. ie). You can make a submission by entering the virtual consultation room on LAWPRO’s website.

You do not have to have read the draft plan to make a submission on this site, your views on water quality and how it can be improved are all that are required. This site also contains lots of useful resources that can help you to navigate the draft plan. If you have read through the draft plan and

wish to contribute suggestions to particular sections of the plan, then you can make a submission on www. gov.ie/housing LAPWRO have held public meetings over the past couple of months, highlighting how the proposed management plan will affect your local waterbodies.

While these are now finished, you can watch the recordings on the LAWPRO website.

Remember, you do not have to be an expert to make a submission. The management of our waterbodies impacts everyone, and everyone should have a say.

#SICAPstories: Remote Working

By STEPHANIE MOYNIHAN In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, Remote Working has gained momentum.

Remote work can be described as employees carrying out their professional duties from a location which differs from traditional, centralised offices.

Such locations could include an employee’s home, a co-working or other shared space, a private office, or any other place outside of the traditional corporate office building or campus.

In response and very much valued co-operation with Grow Remote, IRD Duhallow was pleased to offer a virtual information session on Remote Work in Duhallow and beyond.

This exciting workshop was offered in late 2021 focusing on what remote work is and what and where the opportunities for remote working are.

The Grow Remote facilitator was also delighted to share valuable resources with the participants enabling them to start their journey towards remote working opportunities.

This very practical virtual workshop was well attended and IRD Duhallow is currently in the planning process of offering similar events in the very near future.

The Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP) 2018 – 2022 provides funding to tackle poverty and social exclusion through local engagement and partnerships between disadvantaged

individuals, community organisations and public sector agencies.

Administered by Pobal and funded by the Irish Government through the Department of Rural and Community Development, it also receives funding from the European Social Fund under the Programme for Employability, Inclusion and Learning (PEIL) 2014-2020.

LEADER In The Community Spotlight on Rockchapel Community Playground With the aid of LEADER funding, the community of Rockchapel was able to develop a playground in its village for children up to the age of 12. The provision of a safe and secure recreation area for children in the village envisioned the enhancement and encouragement of the ongoing stability of the community. Geographically, Rockchapel is a remote isolated village which has suffered in recent times particularly with the loss of its post office. Prior to the development of the playground, the offering for children in Rockchapel was quite limited, and the proposed project converted an area that is situated in the centre of the village into a valuable

resource for families and visitors to the area. The community acknowledged that in recent times, much publicity has been given to childhood health promotion, and as part of this, an emphasis has been placed on outdoor play. It was further acknowledged that a locally accessible playground will support the optimal social and physical development of local children.

Furthermore, their parents will benefit through the provision of

a community focal point. This project was deeply embedded with the notion that it was essential to building a support network for all, and young parents and lone parents in particular will find this especially beneficial.

Researching the company will allow you to tailor your application and showcase your genuine interest in the role. Interviewers will notice that you have made the effort to find out about the company’s background, products and services, size, location, ethos etc.

Start with a simple Google search A good first step is by simply carrying out a Google search leading you to different webpages that serve as valuable resources.

You can also have a look at Google images- perhaps past events, conferences etc.

Check out the company’s website Very often, the company’s website itself holds a wealth of knowledge for you to tap into in relation to the history and background of the company, the team as well as products and services on offer. Perhaps you can even sign up for the company’s newsletter.

Have a look at the company’s social media channels Why not have a look for the company on social media? You might find that your potential future employer has Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter account.

Postings across social media may hold valuable information about the company’s offerings and operations. Another potential resource is the company’s LinkedIn presence. Simply enter the company’s name in the search bar to see the company’s

profile as well as current and past employees.

A Wetland habitat receiving Payment Project Update The Duhallow Farming for Blue Dot Catchments EIP Project has entered the 4th year of our 5-year project. The project which aims to protect, restore and enhance the quality of freshwater in the rivers and streams of the Allow river catchment has grown in support amongst the farming community of the Newmarket, Kanturk, Meelin and Freemount areas of Duhallow. Project farmers in the EIP implemented a wide range of measures in the project to protect and enhance the biodiversity of not only the river but also adjacent lands throughout the catchment. The target for the project was to have 85 applicants by the end of the 2021calendar year. The project achieved this total and subsequently paid out €184,940 to the active project farmers in 2021. These payments were a combination of results based payments and for the implementation of additional proposed works which are described later in this article. As the project moves into its fourth year it has a total of 93 active farmers. Unfortunately, the project is now oversubscribed and unable to take new applicants for the foreseeable future.

Water Quality Analysis 2022 The project team use a number of parameters to measure the success or progress of the project.

A number of these parameters include water quality analysis.

The team will be carrying out water quality analysis quarterly in 2022 including chemical analysis whereby the river water is tested for Nitrates & phosphates and biological analysis whereby the river water quality is assessed using the presence of macroinvertebrates. The project will be encouraging project farmers to carry out citizen science including biological sampling of rivers and streams in the catchment.

Water Quality analysis using biological indicators Project Measure Surveying 2022 The time of year for field surveying in 2022 is fast approaching. Ideally all farm holdings in the project are surveyed including habitats, the farm yard connection drain and the farmyard. This year the project will be carrying out a farm assessment on all participating farmers. Where issues on the farm yard are identified the project team will work with the project farm to rectify these issues. The project farmer will be provided with a farm assessment scorecard to carry out citizen science on the farm, farm yard and farm connection drain.

discussed further at project farmer workshops in 2022. The project has added a new tool for surveying in 2022 with the purchase of a drone. The drone will be utilised for field surveying and monitoring of project measures such as biodiversity ponds, farm roadway upgrades and in-drain siltation ponds.

Workshops Project farmer training and workshops play an important role in the EIP project to inform both project farmers and the wider stakeholders of the relevance of high status waterbodies and river catchments. These workshops are varied in nature ranging from farmer demonstration walks, farm yard management, citizen science and river biology. Throughout the year the project team will be holding a number of training events and workshops throughout the catchment. The first training event of the year was held in early march to showcase a successful farm roadway upgrade to prevent silt run-off entering a river. This demo event highlighted the use of concrete water bars and a two chamber settlement pond to control and prevent silt run-off.

The project hopes to have the next workshop in April covering the topic of improving soil biological activity and the soil health. All project farmers in both EIP’s will be invited to the event.

Dot Catchments EIP Project Additional Proposed works The implementation of additional proposed works is continuing throughout the catchment.

Some examples of proposed works verified for payment for project farmers in 2022 includes soil biological activity testing, gravity flow water systems and road cambering levellers.

The project farmers have been provided with an extensive list of additional works options for 2022 including, biodiversity ponds, soil conditioning, multi-species swards, water troughs, settlement ponds and farm roadway water bars. The project looks forward to receiving new innovative examples of proposed works from the project farmers.

Multi-species Swards The project aims to have a number of project farmers reseed a trialplot with a multi species sward (MSS) in 2022. These multispecies swards fix nitrogen from the soil and atmosphere, therefore, reducing the amount of chemical nitrogen the crop requires to grow.

This natural process reduces the chemical fertiliser bill for the farmer over the lifespan of the sward. The preferred multispecies sward mix includes perennial ryegrass, timothy, white clover, red clover, plantain Multi-Species and chicory.

Sward Soil type is extremely important in selecting a plot for MSS, as a result, the project team will survey the plot pre sowing to assess suitability. The team aims to have the MSS trail plots sown in the first 15 farms participating in the EIP projects in April with a

second tranche of farms selected to implement the measure in the Autumn.

Wildlife & Biodiversity on your farm Just a quick note on the importance of having an area for wildlife and biodiversity on your farm. Even a small area or field corner can be beneficial and support a wide range of wildlife.

Our hedgerows around the farm are extremely important for insects and small mammals so retain these hedgerows for wildlife and remember the season is now closed for hedgerow maintenance.

With regards the spreading of organic and inorganic fertilisers please adhere to all buffers as prescribed in the Good Agricultural Practises for the Protection of Watercourses. Failure to adhere to these buffers will result in excessive nutrient run-off to adjacent drains, streams and rivers. As a result, increased levels of nitrates and phosphates will severely impact river water quality and flora and fauna of these important freshwater habitats.

Owentaraglin (Araglin) River EIP Our Owentaraglin River EIP project commenced in January and is almost already at full capacity with many farmers interested in implementing measures to help improve water quality and biodiversity on the Owentaraglin (known as the Araglin). The Araglin is a high water quality status river with populations of Freshwater Pearl Mussel and with Atlantic Salmon making their way up the river each year to spawn.

This project is unique in that is a locally specific Agri-environmental scheme, that accounts for the powerful, meandering nature of the River Araglin when planning

measures. Key to the success of a project like this, is the close co-operation between the project team and the participating farmers.

As the project is only one year in duration the project team have been busy walking farms and developing farm plans that benefit both the river and the farmer.

Farmers too have been busy, with some project measures already complete! Farmers have also already attended their first farm visit to a Duhallow Blue Dot farm where they saw real examples of project measures in action.

Measures funded under the project include: Farm roadway upgrades, In-drain silt settlement ponds, Biodiversity ponds, Watercourse fencing, In-filling of trackside drains, Riverbank tree planting, Alternative drinking sources, Solar-powered water pumps, Hedgerow establishment, Culvert installation, Barn Owl and Kestrel nest box installation, Multi-species swards, and, Habitat retention. Innovation is an important part of the project; in the end of the day, farmers know their farms best and are therefore encouraged to share their ideas for measures, which may be eligible for funding if they offer a benefit to the river.

Applications are still open to join the project. If you have an active herd number and are farming land adjacent (or nearby and draining into) the main channel or a tributary of the Araglin you are eligible. Interested farmers should call IRD Duhallow at (029) 60633.

As we come to the middle of March every year, we are livened up by the presence of green, white, and gold. We hang our tri-colour flags from the windows, the signpost, and anywhere that we can proudly display our love for St. Patrick.

This year we have an added friend, an injection of other colours; the yellow and blue of the Ukraine.

We have hung the national colours of their country to show our support and solidarity for their people, to show that we walk with them and feel compassion for their current plight.

in the Ukraine it is easy to become stressed. We held our breaths as we waited for Covid to pass, and now, very soon after, we hold our breath again while we wait in hope for another crisis to pass.

Thoughts of catastrophe are understandable as we face more uncertainty in the future.

It is very normal to feel anger, helplessness, and worry at this time. It can be very triggering to watch the news bulletins, but we need to be aware of headline hysteria. Newspapers and news channels are trying to grab your attention so they need to be sensational. We watch the news and read the papers so we can be informed but watch out for the shock factor as it can often exaggerate the reality.

We have a duty to ourselves to look after our own mental health during these times. It is important that we do the things that bring us pleasure and joy, that we practice gratitude for what we have, for the peace we live in and for the comforts we are lucky to enjoy.

It can feel conflicting knowing that there is a war occurring for our neighbours but we owe it to ourselves to have peace inside our own front doors.

So, as we wave our green, white, and gold this year, we carry the yellow and blue in our hearts.

Do You Really Not Have Time?

Dental disease in pets

Does you dog have smelly breath? A foul odour from dog’s mouths is never normal, and in fact can be a sign of well-established dental disease. Many people think that as long a pet is succeeding in eating, that they can’t have oral pain, however this is not true. A dog or cat’s instinct to continue to eat is hardwired so strongly that they will continue to munch on food in the face of considerable toothaches. They are brave little creatures, but they shouldn’t have to suffer with dental disease in silence.

As dogs and cats are not good at giving us hints that there may

be an issue with their teeth, and the sign of smelly breath is one that is seen when dental disease is already a major problem, it is up to us as owners to make sure that we take our pets for their annual health check to allow our vet to assess for earlier warning signs of dental disease so that action can be taken to ensure our pet’s oral health is optimised and they remain pain free long term.

If your pet does indeed have smelly breath, visit the vet for a check-up. If dental disease is diagnosed at this check-up, or as part of an annual health check, your vet may recommend measures such as a procedure called a ‘scale and polish’ to remove the bacteria rife tartar from the gumline, or in cases of severe disease, tooth extractions may be required to make your pet painfree.

DUHALLOW LOCAL LEGEND - David O’Connor We talk to a ‘Local Legend’.

They get to share their experience and thoughts regarding living in Duhallow through the past, present and future.

In this issue, we have altered the format slightly to feature words sent to us by a David O’Connor, England, who is a former inhabitant of Kanturk and has subsequently resided in England for seven decades.

Inspired by our feature on Jack Roche in Issue 57, David has shared his memories of his time living in Kanturk.

My name is David O’Connor, now living in Derbyshire, East Midlands England.

I have been here since 1951 when I emigrated aged 19 years old to find work. In those days, even though Kanturk was a thriving and very busy town, there was no work of any kind.

I was born and raised at number 1 Greenane Lane, Kanturk. I was one of nine children, five sisters and three brothers. Sadly only one sister (aged 74, who still lives in kanturk) and I are still alive.

My father, Daniel O’Connor, was Kanturk’s town postman all his life.

In those days, there were two schools one which was run by the ‘nuns’ where you started when you were age 5, and then you moved up to the boy’s school on Percival Street ‘til you left when you were 14 years old. I left school on the Friday and started my first job at the local post office on Strand Street. My pay was 15 shillings a week, and the hours were 9am until 6pm Monday to Saturday and 9am until 12noon on a Sunday. I stuck the job for about 12 months and then went to work at the local printing works which used to be winters, that is when ‘winters were winters’ with deep snow drifts

at Watergate Street where I was paid £1 a week for six days. It was slave labour, but you had no choice in those days - there was no benefits of any kind. I sometimes think how we survived, but everybody was in the same boat.

Reading about the chap (Jack Roche in Discover Duhallow Issue 57) who said he worked for the E.S.B - I was one of the workers who laid those poles, it was very hard work. The foreman would take a gang of us out into the country and drop one of us off in a field. He gave you a pick and shovel, and you had to dig a hole six feet deep. You had to have it done before he came back at around 5pm. It was very hard work as sometimes the ground was full of roots and if you hadn’t finished it, you were dismissed there and then.

I then worked at Mallow ‘sugar beet factory’ where I did 3 campaigns, working regular nights, they lasted 3-4 months, the pay was 5-9 shillings for 7 nights, there was no extra pay for night work, Saturdays, or Sundays. I worked regular nights, never had a single day off and when they finished you, they gave you no holiday pay, so you had to wait until they sent for you again, which is why so many people emigrated.

I had to cycle 12 miles each way. Bearing in mind after completing an 8-hour night shift, I had to cycle 12 miles home, and this was in the height of severe

along the side of the roads.

I wore a big thick army coat to keep warm, but this had its downside with the weight and pedalling. My Mother used to knit socks and I wore them on my hands to keep warm.

The only good thing about the cycle journey was that there was no traffic on the roads.

Reading in the February issue about ‘Fitzpatricks’ bought back many happy memories. There was a chap named Mike O’Sullivan who lived a couple of doors down from me in Greenane, and in the school holidays he would take me out and he did that for all the time when I was at school.

The part about the ‘Van’ also bought back many happy memories; I can remember on one occasion when he said to me “you have seen in a casino how they spin a roulette wheel with one finger and how it goes round and round I have my own wheel in my van”. The amazing thing was he never had a single accident.

Speaking of Mike O’Sullivan and another chap called Terry Bourke who lived up Newmarket Road, they were the first guys to introduce soccer in Kanturk, which in those days was a taboo subject anybody caught playing soccer was banned for life from playing Gaelic football but a lot of them who loved to play soccer would get around it by volunteering to play (soccer) when the soccer team were playing away. The soccer team had to play away every

Local Legend Sunday mostly in Tipperary, so everybody was happy. Speaking of Gaelic sports, it brings back many happy memories of some of the players in the hurling and I will always remember the name of Jerry Considine, TT Galvin, Tom and Andy Kennealy and who can forget the main man of football and hurling, Colonel Galvin, who lived in Watergate Street. Also, the two most well-known footballers named Paddy Smith and Billy Barret. Prior to the pandemic, I went back to Kanturk every year.

The last time was 2019. It is now a ghost town compared to what it used to be. Everybody there is now a stranger, but one cannot forget where it all started. Recipes For Sharing

Diverse and Delicious Recipes from Cultures Around the Globe

Since the beginning of time the sharing of food has held meaningful significance for humans in our daily lives. Food often offers us something more symbolic than Development Officer nutrition, it can provide meaning which may not even be apparent at first glance.

Preparing a meal and eating it together is a powerful thing - we use meals as a way of celebrating milestones, nurturing relationships, making friends and sharing and experiencing different cultures.

Various dishes often provide people with an important link to their cultural identity, in fact many maintain their links with their own heritage through cooking certain meals and dishes, in particular at certain landmark points throughout the year.

In this edition of Discover Duhallow, we will look at two recipes which are associated with different parts of the world; cous cous which is accredited as being the national dish of Morocco, and hummus which has a history traceable to ancient Egypt.

Serves 2 adults Preparation Time: 5 minutes Cooking Time: 10 minutes Utensils needed: chopping board, chopping knife, mixing bowl, measuring jug.

(credit: Safe Food) 10 Minute Couscous Salad Ingredients: • 100 g couscous • 100ml of hot vegetable stock • 2 spring onions • 1 pepper • ½ cucumber • 50g feta cheese • 2 tablespoons of pesto • 2 tablespoons of toasted pine nuts Method 1. Tip the couscous into a large bowl.

2. Put stock into a jug and power 100ml of hot water in to melt the stock.

3. Pour 100ml stock into the bowl of couscous 4. Cover and leave for 10minutes, until fluffy and all stock has been absorbed 5. Meanwhile, slice the onions and pepper and dice the cucumber 6. Add the veg to the couscous, stir in the pesto, crumble the feta and then sprinkle over pine nuts to serve.

Hummus Ingredients: • 200g / 7 oz. tinned chickpeas or dried chickpeas that have been soaked and cooked • 2 teaspoons of lemon juice • 1 clove of garlic • 100ml / 3½ fl oz. of water • 50ml / 2 fl oz. of tahini • Salt and pepper to taste Method 1. Put the chickpeas, lemon juice, tahini, garlic, salt and pepper in a blender and blend 2. Add a little of the water to make a stiff paste 3. The amount of water you need will vary so add a little at a time 4. You can add a little more salt and pepper or lemon juice to taste 5. You can also add some olive oil for extra richness.

Pat Puts Mothers First

Pat McMahon performing his one man show, From 13 to 31, in Meelin hall Mothers First was founded by Pat McMahon, a native of Meelin. In 2004, the organisation formerly known as Varanasi Children’s Hospital originated when Pat found a child critically ill on the streets of India. In 2015, the project evolved its approach to target malnourished pregnant mothers with food baskets and medicine. Pat describes how the typical mother enrolled on the program would weigh between 5.5 to 6 stone when three months pregnant.

Mothers’ abundance of giving extends even to their biology. The food interventions’ impact directly translates to birth weight increases of up to 150g. It is a pure joy to know that the interventions directly correlate to babies being born better nourished. Research shows that even this small weight increase will positively impact the children born into the program their entire lives.

The project in India is now entirely run and managed by local people, and all donations

go directly to the point of need.

Currently, the program delivers food and medicine to over 220 mothers each month. The intervention continues for 4 to 5 months post-delivery. This, Pat, says is for the Mothers, to help build back their strength.

Pat now spends most of his time on International advocacy and is a member of two high-level United Nations working groups on nutrition. “My soul has seen what policymakers read in reports; that is where I add value,” he says.

To end extreme hunger is just a decision away. That decision can only come from the general public mandating governments to fund emergency programs. Last year, Pat began fasting every Monday as a gesture of solidarity. He also completed three barefoot walks, including summiting Ireland’s highest mountain barefoot to mark International Food Day. On Tuesday 8th of March, to mark International Women’s Day, Pat extended his fast to 48

hours to end at 8.30 on Tuesday evening. He then walked 10 miles barefoot, originating at a famine graveyard in Meelin and ending on the stage of Meelin Hall to perform his 1st one-man play entitled From 13 to 31. Pat describes The play as a contemporary play of our time, seen through the eyes of a child-like character.

For Pat, the most memorable part of the day was when the curtains closed. Tea was served, and the talk of a community coming together after so long that lasted well into the night.

Will he perform the play again?

Perhaps. Will he continue his fast and barefoot walk? Yes. The event raised €1,253 equating to delivering food and medicine to 125 mothers for one month.

In it’s 25th of year, the IRD Duhallow Women’s Forum is delighted to launch its first training events of 2022 as we ring in a year of celebrations.

IRD Duhallow Women’s Forum, established in 1997, plays an important role in improving the quality of life for women in Duhallow. This includes improving women’s access to education, training, and personal development in preparation for employment, in supporting women who are undertaking entrepreneurial activity, and supporting women’s advancement in their employment, including into decision making roles.

To start our extensive training and events initiative we are

delighted to welcome Children of the Digital Age Founder Jason O’Mahony to the James O’Keeffe Institute on the 26th of April at 7pm to give a talk on the psychology of social media protecting children against grooming, with a focus on the negative impacts of pornography access and influence of sexting. All welcome and we look forward to meeting you there.
