Banteer

Junction Upgrade: Banteer Lyre and Districts Community Council welcome the announcement by Councillors John Paul O Shea and Bernard Moynihan that Bord Pleanala has approved the planning for the upgrade of Ballymaquirke Junction. This project is long overdue and was discussed in detail at a public meeting organised by the Community Council in March 2018.

It is hoped that the project will now proceed to tender ASAP with Transport Infrastructure Ireland and commence construction.

Banteer Lyre GAA: A huge thanks to Connie, Eamon and all at E Tarrant & Sons Ltd for their continued support of our club, by sponsoring new jerseys and training tops for our Junior hurling team. The Club are delighted with this fantastic new kit. The new jersey will be available on the club shop in due course. Details to be posted via social media channels.

Scoil Mhuire Updates

Our Transition Year students completed a Driving School Workshop with Jenny Woods of Woods Driving School. The topics Jenny covered included: • Safety in the car • Theory Test • Car Maintenance • Driving safety Well done to all on completing the workshop.

First Year Students completed a quiz where they had to guess the title of the book based on the emojis and later created ‘mini-book covers’ from their favourite novels.

Banteer Macra

Banteer Macra would like to congratulate both our Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams who competed in the National Finals on Sunday 27th of February. Both teams showed fierce determination on the day, with our Men’s team being awarded All Ireland Champions for 2 years in a row. This is a fantastic achievement for our club. Well done to all involved.

We would also like to wish our Capers team and neighbouring Capers team, Donoughmore, the very best of luck, having both secured a coveted spot in the upcoming FBD National Final of Capers taking place in Cappoquin Community Centre this Saturday 5th of March.

Doors open at 7 pm with the show kicking off at 8 pm sharp. People wishing to attend are asked to be there as early as possible as Banteer will be kicking off the show on the night. Tractor Run Success On Friday 25th February, family, friends, and neighbours of the late Noreen O’Connor Cronin gathered in Tureencahill Community Centre for the presentation of funds raised from the Tractor Run held in her memory on the 16th January.

An unbelievable €31,877.26 was raised, and this phenomenal amount is a testament to how well thought of Noreen was.

On the night, Donal, Noreen’s husband, and her children, John and Jerry, spoke about Noreen, and how the idea came about as well as how both Kerry Hospice and Comfort for Chemo had been a great support to Noreen and them.

Fr. Pat O’Donnell spoke about how the tractor run was an opportunity for people to show their support for the family.

Mary Sheehan of Kerry Hospice Foundation and Mary Horgan representing Comfort for Chemo were delighted to be receiving such generous amounts.

Dillon Wins In France Dillon Corkery (Team CC Etupes) won a major race in very tough conditions on Sunday last in France, the 58th staging of the Grand Prix d’Onjon race. Dillon was in the break away in a group of 14 riders and when he pushed on he broke clear with another rider Charlie Quaterman. After 127 kilometres of racing, the Irishman finished ahead of Charlie Quarterman (Philippe Wagner Cycling) in a sprint finish, Corentin Navarro (SCO Dijon-Team Materiel-velo.com) completed the podium. Dillon succeeds Pierre Gautherat on the list of race winners.

This race was on a very hilly and testing circuit and on an extremely windy day, Dillon finished as winner with an average speed of 41.5 km /h. Of the 153 starters only 101 finished the race.

Dillon is now based near the Swiss border in France and had just completed a few long weeks of training in St. Tropez and is now looking forward to the next round of the Vienne classic French cup on next Sunday.

His form has been very good to date this year with a 1st place, 4th place, 14th place and bunch finish in his 4 races.

Macroom Library

“Memorable Moments: Rich and Picturesque Scenes of the Lee Valley” is a stunning collection of currently hosted in Macroom Library. Photographer and artist John Brett has captured incredible scenes that straddle the line between dream and reality in both colour and composition. Each image feels like a kaleidoscopic view of nature. John’s art has been captured on postcards available in Irish, Italian, French and English, and will be celebrated further in future exhibitions.

“Memorable Moments” will be on display until the end of March in Macroom Library.

They get to share their experience and thoughts regarding living in Duhallow through the past, present and future.

This issue - Raymond O’Sullivan

Who are you and where do you hail from?

I’m a Newmarket man, and I’ve lived all my life, more or less, in the house where I was born in New Street. Mag and I got married in the early ‘70’s, we had two children, Eoin and Máiréad, and we ran a small bakery and grocery business there until she sadly passed away in 2010. The children are married now and left the nest, so I live alone.

I also did some archaeological work, mostly in planning, but also night classes, school tours, field trips for teachers and community groups, etc. To say I was a substitute teacher of German would be misleading and inaccurate, although I was occasionally called on to hold the fort and try to keep the noise at an acceptable level in the classroom.

A time-consuming task that left scant opportunity to instil an appreciation of the beauty and mathematical precision of German grammar in my unruly charges.

Music has played a major role in my life, but I have many other interests, including local history, folklore, mythology, and, since retirement, gardening is taking up more and more of my time. An ideal pastime for the older person.

You are close to the earth, it’s good exercise, and it encourages

optimism and hope. To plant a garden is to believe in a tomorrow.

Have you witnessed many changes in Duhallow throughout your lifetime?

Huge changes! I was born just after World War II ended and throughout the post war years Duhallow was haemorrhaging its youth. It was well into the ‘60’s before the flow was staunched.

We lived in our own little bubble.

There was very little travel matches on Sunday and the odd trip to Ballybunion during the summer. I saw London before I saw Dublin. Children played in the streets, and pigs, calves, and horses were sold there. Every house in town seemed to be a shop, and you woke in the morning to the clip-clop of horses and rut of cart wheels bringing milk to the creamery. If a plane passed over, the whole town would be out looking up at it with their mouths open.

What do you like most about Duhallow?

The variety! In the people and the landscape, from the hill country in the west and north to the rolling pastures of the Blackwater valley. The urban centres are small enough to walk out of in 10 minutes and all the villages have their own unique charm and personality. The proximity to Limerick and Kerry also add to the colour. Duhallow is a big Barony, bigger than Co. Dublin.

What progression in the area would like to see?

Duhallow is one of the least visited places in the country by tourists.

With a little planning and marketing we could improve on that. I spent

some time in Spain a few years ago in a small town, well off the tourist track, just like Newmarket.

I’ve had lots of inquiries since from people who would like to do the same - experience ‘real’ Spain. It is a niche market, but well worth developing. We have the Sliabh Luachra Music Trail in western Duhallow and the Beara/ Breifne Way, which together with the Shannon waterways forms the spine of The Hidden Heartlands, passes right through the Barony.

And ,of course, we need industry to keep the young people at home.

The exuberance and enthusiasm of youth is vital to keep the breath of life in the old Barony in the future years.

Any advice you would give your 20-year-old self?

I was 20 in the mid ‘60’s, a time of freedom and change. A good time to grow up. Emigration had stopped and the country was rocking. The ‘60’s weren’t just about the Beetles and Rolling Stones. We had the Showband Era. Dance Halls packed with your peers, the ballad boom, lounge bars popping up everywhere.

The Fleadh Ceoils of the time are legendary, traditional music was rapidly reviving with a renewed interest in our own background and culture.

My advice would be to avoid the old mistakes and make some new ones, and, hopefully, get as much enjoyment out of them as you did out of the old ones.

Introducing the IRD Duhallow Job Center

The IRD Duhallow Job Centre offers an array of services for employees and individuals seeking employment. The service tailors its offerings around the needs of both job seekers and employers which are using the service to source candidates.

IRD Duhallow’s Job Centre service provides a free and confidential recruitment service to job seekers in Duhallow. It offers a wide range of supports to those seeking assistance with job search, career planning and recruitment process including CV preparation and interview preparation.

IRD Duhallow’s Job Centre also provides a recruitment service for employers. We have devised a service to assist employers with recruiting and promoting the best

people to serve the current and future employment needs of their business. We match employer’s vacancies with candidates who have made it through the screening and selection process.

The staff quickly adapted to the use of virtual communication platforms, all while becoming points of support for delivery of Job Centre offerings. It was successfully pivoted to online delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic.

IRD Duhallow Job Centre has recently expanded on its service portfolio by not only introducing monthly CV clinics and interview

preparation workshops in 2021 but also launching fortnightly digital newsletters to all those on the Job centre database. Further, monthly updates are posted on social media and the IRD Duhallow website.

The Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP) 2018 – 2022 provides funding to tackle poverty and social exclusion through local engagement and partnerships between disadvantaged individuals, community organisations and public sector agencies.

Administered by Pobal and funded by the Irish Government through the Department of Rural and Community Development, it also receives funding from the European Social Fund under the Programme for Employability, Inclusion and Learning (PEIL) 2014-2020.

Spotlight on Baby Sensory Cork

Baby Sensory classes are an educational offering for babies from birth to 13 months focussing on learning and sensory development.

With the aid of LEADER funding, Baby Sensory Cork’ Banteer Branch was enabled to purchase new equipment to facilitate larger class sizes and additional classes with the prospect of employing a new class leader or class assistant. The need for the project was identified through classes being full or near full at any given time, reflective of the immense demand in this educational area for babies and toddlers. Locally held baby sensory classes strongly contribute to the community as

new parents are being brought together. They are able to talk and support each other which is essential for positive mental health as being a parent can be isolating.

In order to further develop the classes and maintain its excellent reputation throughout the communities of North Cork and

beyond, the equipment needs to continue to be of high standard and excellent hygiene standards.

Marketing of the classes through social media and at grass roots level continues to be key in the developing a following for the classes.

How To Write A Great CV

Your CV is a very important element to being successful in your job hunt and ultimately securing your next position.

Provide accurate information Of course, it can be oh so tempting to embellish your past experience and skills to secure a new job.

While your CV is a very important document to showcase you as an individual and your suitability for a job, it is just as important to be honest and show your integrity.

While it may seem like a little white lie won’t matter, remember that dishonesty tends to catch up and landing a role based on mistruths is not a good foundation for your future with the company.

Keep it real and be proud of your achievements. List them in a professional and coherent

manner. Prior to sending your CV, make sure that all information are current, such as your contact details and that all relevant information in relation to past experiences are included.

Tailor your CV Unfortunately, when it comes to CVs, a one size fits all approach does not tend to work. It is very important to tailor your CV. This means that a CV should be changed for every role that you are applying for ensuring that your most relevant experiences and skills are highlighted for the employer reading your CV.

Presentation is key Remember that first impressions count! Once you are ready to hit that send button or hand in your CV to a potential employer, ensure that your CV is well presented.

Proof read and spell check the document to ensure that there are no spelling mistakes or typos.

IRD Duhallow Skillnet are now taking applications for advanced entry to year 3 of the Level 8 Bachelor of Arts Honours in Early Childhood Education & Care starting September 2022.

Community News

Through the years In this section, we take a photographic look back at IRD Duhallow and its involvement and relationship with the region through the years.

This issue - 2018

Duhallow Choral Society Duhallow Choral Society was established in 1996 and now has over 70 dedicated members who have over the years been highly trained to ensure a very high calibre of choral singing. The group have performed regionally nationally and internationally for various dignitaries over the years including President Michael D Higgins, Leinster House, Cardinal William Levada in Rome and Senator Hilary Clinton. They have toured both Europe and America performing in prestigious venues.

In 2018 the choir undertook a tour of Chicago where they performed at various events organised by the Chicago Rose of Tralee Centre, the Department of Arts and Humanities at St Xavier University, the Irish Network of Chicago and Kerry Group. As it coincided with St Patricks Day celebrations the choir tool part in the Chicago South Side Irish Parade.

This was a great accolade for the choir and raised the profile of Duhallow in Chicago.

“There’s a Mick Cronin in every club - a genuine fella who’ll fix a wall or come with his drill when needs be, or he’ll line a pitch, wash the jerseys, train the underage lads - every club has them, but he’s our Mick Cronin so we’re going to do all we can to support him.” Powerful words from Ryan McCarthy.

Their Mick Cronin is a construction worker originally from Kiskeam, he’s lived in Chicago and now lives in Wilton with his wife Karen and kids Aibhe and Sean.

He’s kind to everyone, admired by old and young, and a fantastic friend, father and husband. And he needs help.

A Healthy Balance Makes All the Difference

Life is all about balance. A little bit of what we fancy never does us any harm, but everything in moderation.

Balance is also important in maintaining our mood. What we do, who we do it with and when we do it can have a huge effect on our moods and our emotions.

We need to have three things in balance to keep our minds healthy; a sense of achievement, a sense of pleasure and a sense of connection. When these things are out of kilter then we become down, stressed or anxious. For example, when we focus mainly on achievements we are likely to become stressed, thus neglecting our pleasure or connection. Another example is when we experience

depression we often withdraw and isolate ourselves from others, avoiding company and losing our sense of connection. Also, a life of all pleasure can become tedious and unfulfilled after a while.

Some practical tips to keep the balance right include: • Take time out for yourself- enjoy some relaxation, fun and enjoyment to feel a sense of pleasure, take note of the things that bring you joy and do more of that. Make a daily list of the small things that bring joylike the coffee in the morning, or the sun in the window. It can be easy to miss the small pleasures in life.

• Make a list of jobs you would like to carry out around the house, do the things at work that you have been avoiding or join an online class to bring a feeling of achievement. Great achievement can be felt in ticking things off the list.

• Arrange a coffee date with a friend, phone a family member or chat with your neighbours to increase your connections with others.

• Remember, there are often activities that incorporate all threegoing for a walk with a friend can bring you connection, pleasure and achievement all rolled into one.

It is also important to note that every day will not be perfectforgive yourself for the days that don’t work out, draw a line under it and try again tomorrow.

When many of us think of social events, we think about the food and drink that will be there. For birthdays its cake, for celebrations its drinks and for weddings its three course meals.

Food will always be there. As long as we are breathing, we will need food. What lots of us need to learn to do is begin to change our mindset towards events and how to manage them. Every food and drink choice you make is exactly that – a choice.

One thing I hear a lot of people do is eat very little all week in preparation for the event in question. This can be detrimental for a number of reasons. By eating

very little all week, you are more likely to overeat at the event, especially with so much food available.

You are also creating a mindset of binge and restrict which can lead to a very poor relationship with food.

Instead, allow yourself to eat normally in the run up to the event and then treat the event as an opportunity to sample some nice food without overdoing it.

When it comes to alcohol, decide what events and parties you will be consuming alcohol at. If we accept a drink every time it is offered, we can end up drinking many nights of the week and alcohol not

The Origins of Life

Scientists have made some tremendous advances in recent years. Biologists are discovering that life is not as delicate as we once thought. No matter where on Earth we look, we seem to encounter life. Hardy bacteria that can thrive in the harshest of conditions. From the extreme heat of thermal springs and deep sea hydrothermal vents to the harsh conditions found in nuclear reactors, bacteria and other microbes find a way to prosper.

We have exposed bacteria to the harshness of space on the outside of the international space station, only to discover later that the bacteria hadn’t been killed off, but had survived the exposure and were able to grow again upon return to normal conditions.

Meanwhile astronomers are making more and more discoveries about the world around us. Water seems to be everywhere. We have traced its signature in molecular clouds between the stars and in distant solar systems as they are being born. We suspect it is to be found in vast quantities, below the surface, on some of the moons of Saturn and Jupiter.

The number planets that we know of in the universe is growing at a phenomenal rate. And we now suspect billions of Earth like planets in our own galaxy and immeasurable Earth like planets in the universe.

Of course with all this going on, it’s seems logical and tempting to infer that the universe must be teeming with life. Look at the number of planets that exist. Can we really be the only example of life in such a vast universe? As tempting as it is to believe that it

is only a matter of time until our cosmic cousins pay us a visit, we should remember that we still know of only one example of life in the universe, and that is here on planet Earth. Speculation on the presence of life elsewhere, is just that, speculation. We are still unsure as to how easy or hard it is for life to get going. Is it common?

Is life on earth a once off and a big fluke? We don’t know. We don’t

know how life began, where life began and haven’t firmly defined when life began. We haven’t managed to create life in the lab.

We haven’t heard signals from other worlds despite listening for decades. There are still a lot of unanswered questions and a lot more discoveries to be made. In the meantime, however, it is fun to imagine just what could be out there.

Did life start in a warm little pond just as Darwin thought?

Multi Species Swards Part 2: Management

In the previous edition Discover Duhallow, we explored the benefits to the farmer and to the environment of multi-species swards. Sowing a multi-species sward involves using a seed mixture that contains multiple plant species, including grasses, legumes and herbs, as opposed to a grass monoculture or a grass and clover mix.

This edition we take a look at the management of multi-species swards: Choosing the Right Mixture Multi-species swards can benefit both light, dry soils and heavy, wet soils. Species such as Perennial Ryegrass, White Clover and Ribwort Plantain will tolerate a range of conditions.

Species such as Lucerne and Chicory will succeed on drier soils and are particularly capable of withstanding droughts. On wetter soils, a higher percentage of species such as Timothy, Meadow Fescue and Ribwort Plantain will benefit the sward. Research has shown that multi-species swards increase earthworm abundance and biomass which has a positive effect on water infiltration rates, benefitting wetter soils.

The proportion of grasses to legumes to herbs will vary and will change over time. A ratio of 55:35:10 (grass:legume:herb) has been shown to be effective and has outcompeted perennial ryegrass monocultures receiving a higher N application in research trials.

Establishment Spring sowing is ideal for multispecies swards as they generally require a warm soil temperature

of around 12°C for sowing. Drilling should be complete by August.

Preparation of the seedbed before sowing is important. The seeds used in these mixtures are usually small and therefore require a shallow drilling into a fine seedbed.

As the mixture contains broadleaf species it is crucial that postemergence herbicides are avoided. However, research to date has demonstrated that weeds are not a big problem with multispecies swards.

Fertiliser Application For multi-species swards to succeed and persist it is crucial that they are not managed as you would a perennial ryegrass monoculture sward. Heavy applications of N fertiliser will negatively affect clover persistence. A light application of fertiliser in Spring can boost early growth but it is essential to allow clover to do its job and fix nitrogen naturally in the summer months. DLF Seeds recommend that this early application should not exceed 50kg N/ha. Indeed, many of Teagasc’s trials where multi-species swards outperformed perennial ryegrass monocultures or ryegrass-clover swards receiving 250kg+ N/ha, no N fertiliser was used or a light application of 90kg N/ha was used.

Grazing Management Again, as with N-application, it is important that grazing management is tailored to suit

multi-species swards. Rotational grazing must be implemented.

Animal access to paddocks should be restricted to short periods of twelve hours to three days depending on size. This prevents selective overgrazing of palatable herb species. The optimal post-grazing height is 7cm compared to the traditional 4cm. Herbs also require a slightly longer rest period of up to 28 days, although there is some anecdotal evidence to suggest that multi-species swards can also perform optimally in traditional 21day rotations.

A Spring sowing should be ready for grazing a couple of months after sowing. At this stage chicory should have seven leaves, plantain should have six. The sward will have a well-established root system and will be ready for grazing.

Silage Silage can be made using multispecies swards. However, it is a bit trickier. Good weather conditions are essential as the sward will have a lower dry matter than a grass sward. A longer wilt period is necessary and silage additives may be used to improve preservation.

A seminal movie dealing with black and white race relations, Norman Jewison’s superb In the Heat of the Night (1967) is also a cracking police procedural.

Cinema lost a truly important icon recently with the recent passing of Sidney Poitier. In 1967, he was on a roll in two very important movies, Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner and In the Heat of the Night.

Here, Poitier plays a black Philadelphia police detective who is mistakenly suspected of a local murder while passing through a racially hostile Mississippi town, and after being cleared is reluctantly asked by the police chief to investigate the case. That chief is played by the great Rod Steiger

It can’t be underestimated what an important figure he was in giving a voice and image to an entire race on the big screen. And yet in his day, Poitier ran into criticism from both sides. White audiences were still bigotted in accepting a handsome black man leading a movie (don’t even start on the notion that he could romance a white woman onscreen). For black audiences, they often accused him of bowing down before the white

man and not pushing hard enough to get black voices heard. He couldn’t win either way but, with as much grace and dignity as a person with that much pressure on them, he pushed forward.

Poitier walked so generations after him could run. The same night the academy awards gave Denzel Washington the Best Actor Oscar in 2002, Poitier received the lifetime achievement award.

Washington joked during his speech, directing it to Poitier in the balcony; “I’ll always be chasing you, Sidney”.

Poitier was a great actor. Just pay attention to the iconic response “They call me Mr. Tibbs.” It feels like it should be shouted at high volume but Poitier as Tibbs knows that he has to remain calm given the environment he is in. His response helps keep the peace but you still get the resentment and defiance all in that one response.

But so too was Rod Steiger. He gives his role as a bigotted cop many layers, suggesting a more complicated figure then meets the eye.

Legendary cinematographer Haskell Wexler photographs the

movie. The film was innovative not just in its dealings with race relations, but also in its photography. Never before had a big budget color picture been properly lit for an actor with dark skin — cinematographer Haskell Wexler saw that standard lighting for color film had a tendency to produce a lot of glare on those with darker skin complexions. He thus toned down the lighting on Sidney Poitier, for vastly better results.

This was most certainly a step forward in social justice in cinema (and justice for realism in and on film), yet it is still kind of sad that it took until 1967 to get it right.

Its tale of racial division still applies even in today’s seemingly tolerant culture but it’s not preachy.

The mismatched buddy cop would see a big resurgence in the 80s and 90s but here we get to see one of its greatest examples in action. Available on DVD,

LEADER Smart Villages Training Opportunity

We are currently recruiting participants from Boherbue, Bweeng, Inchigeelagh and Tureencahill.

The training will run on Tuesday 22nd and 29th March and 5th April from 6.30pm-9.30pm.

Smart Villages is a national programme that has been commissioned by sixteen local development companies from around the country and is being delivered under LEADER in 2022.

Smart Villages are communities in rural areas that use innovative solutions to improve their resilience, building on local strengths and opportunities.

The Smart Village Curriculum compiled by eTownz, is a modular and pragmatic approach to local development, where the town creates an interactive register for its local Assets, Stakeholders, Goals, Projects and Metrics. CEO of eTownz, Pat Kennedy says “The Smart Village approach seeks to bring together local knowledge and digital tools to empower local communities”.

Each session will introduce a new key topic, which will guide participants through the process of creating a “Smart Village Plan” for their area. The training will be delivered in the James O’Keeffe Institute, Newmarket. A Smart Village plan will be created for each community with the objective that when all communities have been completed, we will be able to weave relevant data from each plan together to build capacity for the area and to further strengthen the region and enable our communities to access many opportunities, including funding from the EU and government initiatives. The ENRD (European Network for Rural Development), which oversees LEADER funding has determined that all future

grant funding must align with the concepts of “Smart Villages”.

Once the plan for each area has been prepared, it will be reviewed annually in a consultative and inclusive manner by all local stakeholders.

This is really exciting and is complementary to the community planning work IRD Duhallow carried out in 2019 when a “roadshow” included consultation with all communities in their own community. LEADER Smart Villages will offer the opportunity to collaborate and plan for new projects that will be beneficial to peoples own area but also the region of Duhallow.

Recruitment for this training is underway and we would encourage anyone with an interest in improving your local area to jump in and get involved! We believe it will enable greater collaboration and communication between villages, towns and local organisations such as IRD

Focus on Social Inclusion: The 9 Grounds of Discrimination

In general terms equality is concerned with removing the barriers that block opportunities for certain groups of people. In Irish law the grounds of discrimination are clearly laid out. Central to this is the idea that many people face barriers both visible and invisible. Therefore, when looking at exclusion, there is a need to remain aware of the idea of ‘less favourable treatment’ which is a central bench mark in assessing discrimination which can be assessed as direct and non-direct. There are two different areas of legislation that are referred to in relation to equality.

The Employment Equality Acts outlaws discrimination at work and the Equal Status Acts outlaws discrimination outside the workplace. The following points are of note: Gender – Discrimination on ‘gender grounds’ happens where there is less favourable treatment of one person compared to another due to their gender status.

Saint Joseph - One Of Our Greatest Saints

By TOM DENNEHY On March 19th we celebrate the feast day of Saint Joseph, one of our greatest saints.

The role of Saint Joseph was given a special place last year when Pope Francis declared 2021 to be the year of Saint Joseph.

On March 19th last year, Pope Francis elevated Ireland’s national Marian Shrine of Knock to international status and also decreed it to be a Eucharistic Shrine. Saint Joseph was present with Our Lady, Saint John and the Lamb of God on the altar with the angels hovering overhead on 21nd of August 1879. He also appeared at the final apparition at Fatima with the child Jesus in his arms and blessed the world. This gave new impetus to a great saint who up until then was not recognised sufficiently for the significant part he played in God’s plan to bring salvation to mankind.

St. Joseph as exemplary husband and father figureSt. Joseph, a quiet and humble man, had great faith and it was this faith which guided him through many troubles. He was a selfless man who only thought of serving Jesus and Mary with the sacrifices he made. He trusted God and God entrusted the care of the Saviour of the world to him.

He was God the Father’s earthly shadow here on Earth protecting Jesus during his life.

He took his religious responsibilities seriously and was a devout man of prayer.

He provided a stable home and worked as a carpenter. He prayed

daily with his family. He shouldered his responsibilities with courage in dangerous times. He protected Jesus from Herod. He was in essence, a just man. He was very close to God and was led by the Holy Spirit.

“When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home”. (Matthew 1:24-25) In a world in which the role of the family is under attack, St. Joseph offers protection to all who come to him in prayer.

Feast of St. Joseph the Worker.

He is very close to the dying and is patron saint of the dying and patron of a happy death.

Devotion of great saints to St JosephMany of our great saints were very close to St Joseph. Saint Faustina, in her diary entry 1203, writes: Saint Joseph urged me to have a constant devotion to him... He looked at me with great kindness and gave me to know how much he supported this work (of mercy).

He promised me special help and protection.

St Teresa of Avila had a special devotion to him and wrote the following words: Knowing by experience St Joseph’s astonishing influence with God, I would wish to persuade everyone to honour him with particular devotion.

St. Joseph as Patron SaintSt Joseph is patron saint of the Universal Church. His protection is very much needed at this time as it is under sustained Satanic attack with many no longer practising their faith and Christians being massacred daily.

He is also patron saint of the family, fathers, travellers, migrants, house sellers and buyers, craftsmen, engineers and workers.

On May 1st we also celebrate the

St. Joseph as IntercessorSt. Joseph continues to intercede for us in Heaven acting as a living witness to our living God. Our world today is very much in need of his mighty intercession.

Pope Francis favoured this prayer to St Joseph: Glorious Patriarch Saint Joseph, whose power makes the impossible possible, come to my aid in these times of anguish and difficulty. Take under your protection the serious and troubling situations that I commend to you, that they may have a happy outcome. – (Name your request).

Beloved Saint Joseph, all my trust is in you. Let it not be said that I invoked you in vain, and since you can do everything with Jesus and Mary, show me that your goodness is as great as your power.
