A one-man play coming to a hall near you!

This one-man play, From 13 to 31 centres around the globe travelling escapades of Paddy. The play links child experiences and thoughts to moments in time continents later.

From 13 to 31 seeks to be a contemporary play of our time. It offers a unique a spotlight on where we are as a people abiding in one world together.

A central theme running through the play is the abundance of Love—the dynamic between giving and receiving where everybody can win. The play will have its first official performance in Meelin Hall on the occasion of International Women’s Day, Tuesday 8th of March, 7:30pm - 8:30pm.

All proceeds will go to further the work of MothersFirstCharity.org.

Congratulations to all girls from Duhallow gymnastics club who competed in a Gymnastics competition in Dublin. The competition welcomed clubs from all over Ireland. These two groups came out on top, winning 1st and 3rd place.

Scoil Mhuire Boys Basketball Success Scoil Mhuire’s first year boys basketball team got off to a winning start against Coláiste Fionnchua. Our boys won 22-16. It was a great start to the season. Well done boys.

Winning Streak for Scoil Mhuire Girls Basketball Team Well done to the first year girls who won against Davis College, Mallow.

The girls won 36-14. A tremendous win by the girls. Good luck in the next game.

Saturday 26th March - Olive Foley is the mother of two young boys and wife of the late Anthony Foley, the Munster Rugby coach who died suddenly in 2016. Olive offers support to children who have lost a loved one.

Hug In A Mug

For Valentine's weekend & to celebrate the easing of restrictions members of Castlemagner Community of all ages came together to bring a smile to Senior Citizens of Castlemagner.

The CCDA were overwhelmed with the amount of nominations and were thrilled to be able to spread some joy and cheer to members of the Community.

Hug in a Mug (small treats to be enjoyed gift wrapped in a mug) were dropped to those friends, relatives and neighbours we have been unable to meet in person for nearly two years, as a small token as to how important and valued they are!

Thank you to all those who nominated friends, neighbours & family. People were thrilled to receive the unexpected gift and delighted to know others were thinking about them.

One recipient quipped that she had never received a Valentine’s gift before!

Congratulations and well done to all involved in this initiative spreading a little happiness and of course to the many volunteers and senior pupils of Ballyhass National School for begin involved in this marvellous gesture of kindness.

Scoil Mhuire Well-being in Scoil Mhuire Kanturk Elma Walsh visited Scoil Mhuire Kanturk.

She spoke to our fifth year students about the establishment of the Donal Walsh Live Life Foundation which has been one of the real legacies of his life and his message. Its vision is to reduce the suicide rate in teenagers and to continue the promotion of Donal’s message.

Through the foundation, Fionnbar and Elma speak to schools across Ireland and now have a reach of approximately 50,000 students per annum. The Foundation has also raised over half a million euro in Donal’s memory. We would like to thank Elma Walsh for her talk on @DonalLiveLife and mental health. Her inspirational and compassionate talk was greatly appreciated by our fifth year students.

DUHALLOW LOCAL LEGEND - Eily Buckley A new feature where we talk to a ‘Local Legend’.

They get to share their experience and thoughts regarding living in Duhallow through the past, present and future.

This issue - Eily Buckley was a terrible blow. I have no memory of her, but not having a loving Mom to cling to made us all very self reliant and strong willed.

Children that time were kept down. Nobody ever praised any efforts they made. Finding a life’s partner was made almost impossible. In some cases, the old custom of having to marry the man of your parents choice was still in vogue. So all meetings and courting had to be done well under cover. That is one of the biggest changes that I have seen over the years. Nowadays young people can bring a friend home, mix with the family, feel free to socialise, and then make up their minds to marry or not. Surely to choose a life’s partner has to be the most important thing in life.

I used to see young people serving their time to a trade, which took up to three or four years, and they would not get good employment if they were not qualified. To name the other changes that I have come through would fill volumes, but that’s another job for another day.

From where we lived, there is a beautiful view of Duhallow with our railway station in the foreground.

When the trains were passing, the whole valley would be a blur of steam as it wafted along in the wake of the speeding locomotive.

We loved picking out the various towns in Duhallow; Cullen, Kiskeam, Boherbue, and others, plus the Kerry Hills were within our view. How it fed our curiosity as we wondered who lived in these places? Would we ever be able to travel all that way to see them some day? Little did I think that I would “reverse” a 44 seater bus into every one of them some day.

You asked me if I had any advice for the twenty year olds of today; Needless to say the one ingredient which has seen me through all the joys and sorrows of the past 88 years is my Faith.

My trust in God made it all possible. He is like a loving father.

If a small child asks his Dad for something which he knows will hurt or maybe kill him, then he won’t let him have it, but will give him something else instead to satisfy. God is like that. Oh when I think of the things I prayed for in my young days, maybe some gorgeous fellow who didn’t even know I existed, and that I didn’t get (Thank God.)

Inclusion Never Stops

In our busy modern world which is characterised by continuous activity, there has never been a more opportune time to reflect on the issue of inclusion and the importance of its role in communities.

Throughout the Covid 19 pandemic, it was frequently noted that there was a high risk of some individuals and households becoming vulnerable or marginalised due to a lack of connection or social contact.

We regularly heard that social restrictions and service closures disproportionally impacted some members of society. It is well established how our social connections and support networks play a significant role in our lives and impact our health and wellbeing, however for some, local community linkages may be tenuous. This can particularly be the case for members of new communities who are striving to establish vital local connections.

The benefits of social inclusion are multifaceted, but can ultimately lead to opportunities and new connections that are positive and enduring.

Some might say the word inclusion means ‘everyone’ while to others it might evoke a feeling of fairness or belonging. Given the current national context whereby great strides are being taken for the re-introduction of activities, this may be the ideal point in time for us all to pause and reflect on what inclusion and participation means in real terms.

We All Have a Part to Play In order to assess current participation and involvement, meaningful questions that community organisations could reflect on at this point in time include: • Who attends our local activities and events? Are some groups under-represented or not in attendance at all? Is there an identifiable reason why some people are not becoming involved?

• Would now be a good time to start a membership drive?

• Are there people employed in a specific role that we could reach out to in order to expand our reach within the locality?

• Are we familiar with all cohorts of our local community? Are there sectors that would benefit from becoming involved with our particular activity?

• Are people aware of our organisation and role within the community? Is there potential to expand our membership by reaching out to members of new

communities who may wish to become involved but are not sure how to?

• Can we establish linkages with other active organisations who maybe influential in the lives of minority groups or members of disadvantaged communities in order to encourage new membership?

• What are the existing characteristics of our group that make it inclusive, what initiatives could we undertake to build upon these attributes?

It is with all of the above in mind that groups can maximise community inclusion, and see the greatest amount of people benefiting from their activities, potentially creating big changes with small steps.

Discover Duhallow...A Day of the Region

A Day of the Region is a LEADER funded transnational community project with the aim of building capacity and boosting regional pride in our rural communities through communityled events and activities.

First brought to Ireland in 2012

by IRD Duhallow, the concept of the Discover Duhallow… A Day of the Region Initiative captures the essence of life in Duhallow, and encourages both locals and visitors alike to come out into their communities and to take part in the wide range of amenities, clubs, activities, and resources that are on the doorstep in the region.

Dumfries and Galloway were the first regions in the UK to deliver the Day of the Region Initiative in 2011. As part of the IRD Duhallow Day of the Regions project, we have visited our partners in Dumfries and Galloway LEADER in Scotland to learn from their experiences.

This project is a celebration of rural community life and an opportunity to showcase all that Duhallow has to offer individuals living in the region and people visiting.

It is a fantastic opportunity to make people who are new to the community aware of the wealth of activities and resources available right here on their doorstep. There is something for everything to see and do regardless of age and gender.

Duhallow’s strongest asset is its people and IRD Duhallow

has supported them through the bottom up approach to rural development in identifying the events they wished to organise and host for the Day of the Regions Initiative. The wide variety of events which take part in this LEADER funded initiative are a perfect example of the strong sense of community spirit that has been fostered and developed in Duhallow. IRD Duhallow would like to thank all community groups and businesses for continuing to support this initiative.

The delivery of events was unfortunately curtailed by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic however we are excited to take expressions of interests and applications for events. Please contact IRD Duhallow on 02960633 for further information.

#SICAPstories Labour Market Activation

By STEPHANIE MOYNIHAN Through our Labour Market Activation offerings, we aim to provide programmes supporting those in the search of employment or those seeking to update their skillset. Course offerings are flexible and responsive in relation to different industry needs. This entails different programmes depending on where the client is at, for example some people are relatively close to the labour market and “job ready” and may need short term job specific training whilst other individuals may need more intensive supports and guidance and require one to one assistance to help overcome the challenges they

face. A range of training has been delivered in the past to meet the varying needs included Safe Pass training, 360 Excavator training, Front Line Office Skills, Warehouse, Operative training, Good Agricultural and Collection Practices and most recently a workshop focussing on remote working opportunities. To further support the communities we are serving, we also provide an emotional support and counselling service for job seekers.

The Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP) 2018 – 2022 provides funding to tackle poverty and social exclusion through local engagement and partnerships between disadvantaged individuals, community organisations and public sector agencies.

Managing Job Search Anxiety

Looking for a job is a very exciting time even though it may sometimes not feel this way. Job search and ultimately getting a new job means change in ones’ life and trusting the process is often daunting. Remember that you are not alone in this. Everybody would feel anxiety to varying degrees.

Here are a few tips that can help you to manage anxiety during job search.

Stay positive and realistic Looking for a job and the overall recruitment process can take time.

Try to remain realistic and most of all positive.

Give yourself credit for small successes along the way. Keep your chin up and be kind to yourself.

Celebrate small successes Submitting applications is a major step, securing an interview is a great success and even actively researching your opportunities is a great step forward. Treat job hunting like a job that you start at the same time every morning, take a lunch break from and that ends at the same time every day.

This will give your day structure and routine which will help you to remain focussed.

Give yourself a break It is very important that you take regular breaks from your job search allowing you to give your mind a break. Spending time outdoors, exercising and spending quality times with friends and family will help you recharge.

A Look Back In Time

Through the years In this section, we take a photographic look back at IRD Duhallow and its involvement and relationship with the region through the years.

This issue - 2014

Back in 2014, the now well established Newmarket Pitch and Putt was but a dream on the cusp of coming true. The official opening saw familiar faces in Duhallow, such as Jack Roche and Cllr Bernard Moynihan, but cutting the ribbon was the then President of the Pitch and Putt Union of Ireland, Eamon Birchall.

In this issue, we celebrate the Pitch and Putt's reopening (see pgs. 12 & 13), and with it, the relationship it has formed with the barony in those years.

Newmarket Pitch and Put

With Covid restrictions easing, Newmarket Pitch and Putt is looking forward to the 2022 season, starting on the first day of March. Located on the grounds of the James O’Keeffe institute, this stunning 18 hole pitch and putt course was newly renovated and redesigned in 2015 to USGA standards.

Newmarket Pitch and Putt offers players a very challenging round over 18 holes. All holes are within the pitch and putt union of Ireland’s regulations, with the longest hole being 70 meters. There are plenty of bunkers and two small ponds to make it more challenging.

Over the past few years, we were delighted to welcome visitors from other clubs as well as visitors on holidays. We were especially happy to welcome our national schools who come here every year on a three week course run by pitch and putt Ireland’s head coach, who shows them everything from pitching to putting.

Entry At the start of Covid, we installed a new fob system to reduce the use of handling pens and paper.

When a member first registers, they will be given a personal electronic fob which cost €10, not included in membership. When they approach the entry gate to the course, they just wave the fob in front of the panel and the gate will open for them. Exiting is the same procedure. There is no signing in as the fob logs each member into the system. Non members wishing to use the course can pay via secretary and access will be given via password.

Hand sanitisers are still in use at the course gate.

Over the years, Duhallow schools have had a ball learning the basics of pitch and putt.

New Members New members are always most welcome and encouraged to try out our weekly competitions; it’s a great way to make new friends and get tips to improve their game.

Along with these competitions, we also run an over 50s competition once a month.

Membership is available to people all over Duhallow and we encourage our family package.

Membership can be paid online via our website pitchandputtnewmarket.ie.

How To Be More Open-Minded

It is fair to say that the world is changing. We live in a much more tolerant world today than in the past. Our children are growing up to live a life of freedom, expression, and understanding.

Judgement and ridicule are no longer tolerated. Nothing is outside the norm anymore because we have broadened our inhibitions and stretched our parameters.

All of this is a wonderful thing but what if you struggle to keep up?

What if you really want to be openminded, but you don’t know where to start?

Open-mindedness involves being receptive to new ideas, new concepts, and new information.

We can find it hard to embrace all new ideas and lifestyles if that idea conflicts with our existing, longstanding beliefs.

Being open-minded does not mean that you must sympathise and agree with every new idea. You can be open-minded in other ways: • Being curious to hear the views of others.

• Allowing your own ideas to be challenged.

• Having empathy for others.

• Being humble with your own knowledge.

• Wanting to hear what others

have to say.

Allowing your mind to be open to the changing views of the world can be very beneficial. You gain insight into fresh approaches, you become open to new experiences, and you can achieve personal growth. You also learn to be more optimistic and less negative in your views. The biggest benefit however is that you might learn new things - it is hard to keep learning when you are surrounded by the same old ideas. Open mindedness can broaden your mind to new beliefs and new learning.

Even though it can be a challenge to be more open-minded, it is possible. Sometimes it involves examining the beliefs you thought you knew, setting aside your judgements and looking at the new evidence before you. Ask yourself questions and give it time.

Life as we knew it is almost back in full swing and social calendars are beginning to fill up once again.

A catch up with a family member.

Unexpected drinks with friends.

Weddings. Christenings.

It is all going on again and, if you’re like me, you will be delighted with all the social events!

If reducing body fat is your goal, events can create a lot of anxiety and stress. These events are usually based around food and drinks, and its rarely vegetables and water as the options!

My advice is to view every social event in isolation and win the rest of your day that day.

• Eat lots of vegetables and protein on the day of the event • Get out for a walk or do a class to get some movement in on the day • Drink lots of water the day of the event and the day after, especially if drinking alcohol

And if you do over consume food or alcohol, remember that it is 1 meal out of 21 meals that week.

Where you will begin to hinder your progress is when you have a party on Friday night, you eat a slice of cake and then you tell yourself you have “broken” your diet so you continue eating for the whole weekend. This is what leads

to overconsumption of calories and that Monday morning feeling of being bloated, lethargic and feeling the need to start again.

Multi Species Swards Part 1:

Benefits to the farmer and the environment

With the rising costs of inputs, farmers are looking for innovative solutions of producing more with less. Multi-species swards may provide one of these solutions.

Sowing a multi-species sward involves using a seed mixture that contains multiple plant species, including grasses, legumes and herbs, as opposed to a grass monoculture or a grass and clover mix. Typical species include ryegrass, timothy, red and white clover, chicory, and plantain. Each

of these species compliment each other and bring their own qualities to the sward. Grasses species are important for productivity and strong spring growth. Legumes make nitrogen in the atmosphere available for plant uptake and are a source of protein. Herbs are deep rooting, breaking up the soil and preventing compaction and sucking up diverse nutrients from deeper in the soil profile. Herbs also ‘climate-proof’ the sward as they are often more tolerant to drought.

Grasses Ryegrass is easily digestible and ensures strong spring growth.

Timothy again is easily digestible and is more tolerant of wetter soils. Increasing the amount of Timothy in the sward may prove valuable in wetter areas or where flooding is an issue, especially as climate change intensifies (Meadow Fescue could also be sown to ensure yields on wet soils).

Legumes Both Red and White Clover, as legumes, are natural nitrogen-fixers and will improve yields without the need of chemical inputs. They are also high in protein which benefits animal nutrition and improves milk solids.

Herbs Plantain is a herb that is important for animal nutrition due to its high mineral content. It also performs well under dry conditions, a trait that may prove useful considering the increased likelihood of droughts that farmers now face during summer months.

Chicory is a herb that similar to plantain is high in minerals and is very drought tolerant. Chicory is also easily digestible by ruminants.

Research Research is increasingly focusing on multi-species swards each year in Ireland. A recent report from Teagasc indicated that under normal weather conditions, a sixspecies sward, receiving 150kg N/ha/year, outyielded a perennial ryegrass sward receiving 300kg N/ ha/year by over one tonne of dry matter. Under drought conditions the six-species sward receiving 150kg N/ha/year, again out yielded the perennial ryegrass sward receiving 300kg N/ha/year.

Benefits to the Environment There are several environmental benefits of multi-species swards.

These include: • Reduced chemical fertilizer use, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and leaching • Reduced dependence on fossil fuels to produce and transport fertilizers • Increased earthworm activity due to the increased diversity of root systems • Greater carbon sequestration due to deeper rooting systems • Enhanced pollination activity due to a greater diversity of flowering species The sowing of a multi-species sward on at least 6% of eligible hectares will form one measure under the new voluntary ecoscheme that will replace the greening payment in next year’s Common Agricultural Policy.

The Hubble Space Telescope

By TREVOR O’DONOGHUE Thirty-two years ago, in April 1990, the Space Shuttle Discovery blasted off carrying what was to become one of the most successful scientific missions of all time; The Hubble Space Telescope. Hubble and the images it produced have, more than any other mission since the heady days of the Apollo space programme, brought the magic of space to the public.

Hubble has probed the depths of space and brought its wonders to our magazines, televisions, and computer screens where humanity has looked on in awe.

It wasn’t always plain sailing for Hubble. Shortly after Hubble’s launch, astronomers and scientists eagerly waited for the first images to be sent back. When the images finally arrived, they were out of focus, soft and blurry, not greatly, but enough to leave all concerned quite upset, to say the least. The telescope was launched at a cost

Pillars of creation is a Hubble image showing magnificent star forming regions within the Eagle Nebula of 1.5 billion dollars and it really didn’t perform as well as it should.

It turned out that the large 2.4m diameter mirror used to collect the light had a slight flaw. A trip to the opticians was in order, but since the telescope orbits at a distance of over 500 miles from the Earth,

a Space Shuttle mission with corrective optics - or “glasses” - and a crew of astronauts to fit them was in order.

Three years after the telescope was launched, seven astronauts fitted the new optics system and a bunch of cameras and other instruments. Finally, Hubble could perform as it was designed to, and the images it sent back were breath-taking. Images showing stars being born, solar systems forming around distant suns, the planets in mesmerising detail. High resolution vistas of distant galaxies and the Hubble Deep Field and Ultra Deep Field Views. 10,000 galaxies packed into an area of the sky 25 times smaller than the full moon. Each galaxy packed with hundreds of billions of suns. That’s a pretty impressive picture!

As the James Webb Space Telescope is fine tuning its set up, we can only hope that it catches the public imagination in the same way that the Hubble Space Telescope did.

The Season Of Lent

The season of Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 2nd. This year, it is six and a half weeks before Easter and provides a 40 day fast (Sundays excluded) in imitation of Jesus Christ fasting in the wilderness before he began his public ministry.

Lent is an important religious observance in the Christian world.

Lent is the season we observe and commemorate the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, the son of God, our Saviour and Redeemer. It is an opportune time to reflect on what it means to be a follower of Christ. It affords us an opportunity to walk with Jesus on the road to Calvary and rejoice in the Risen Jesus on Easter Morning.

As we slowly emerge and recover from the Covid restrictions, let us use this Lent to do the things we neglected to do in the past two years.

Lent is a time for spiritual renewal. It gives us a tremendous opportunity to grow closer to God. It is therefore a Grace filled time.

Like Jesus, we enter in to the desert so to speak. We examine ourselves and we see how we can improve our relationship with ourselves, others, and with a God who loves us unconditionally.

We begin at the start of the year with a list of New Year resolutions which may have gone astray. Lent is a great time to start again with Spring approaching, daffodils appearing, and longer evenings giving a much needed lift to our spirits.

On Ash Wednesday, we receive ashes on our foreheads to remind us that we are mortal, fragile, and merely pilgrims passing through this world. The words of the priest

emphasise this; “remember you are dust and in to dust you shall return”. These are sobering words indeed reminding us of the brevity of life and the need to be ready to meet our Maker when we die.

The ashes used are from the blessed palms used on Palm Sunday the previous year, these are burned and blessed. The priest makes the sign of the cross on our foreheads reminding us of our commitment to the Gospel values; “repent and believe the good news”.

Ash Wednesday is one of the most significant days the Church celebrates, even though not a day of obligation. It is however a day of fast and abstinence - the other day being Good Friday - when we are allowed only one main meal which usually contains fish.

During our Lenten preparation perhaps, we could pray more with increased fervour. Let us make a resolution to pray The Rosary every day and we will see miracles happen in our lives.

Pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy each day for peace in our world. Let us return to Mass on a regular basis.

Perhaps we could fast a little. We have lost the sense of fasting today. Perhaps we could say no to some things that we like. Say no to the internet, T.V. shows, and radio. Reduce time spent on our phones. Cut back on alcohol consumption.

Allow God’s Spirit to

reign in our souls.

Perhaps we could give alms or help those who are in need.

Maybe we could make a conscious effort to visit the lonely, elderly, or the sick. Let us make an effort to listen to people more. The idea is to give of yourself.

Another great focus for Lent is to try to trust God more. Every morning, first thing, offer up your day to Him. Allow him to use you as His instrument to do good in the world.

The more we give of ourselves this Lent, the more we will be blessed, and the more the miracle of Easter will come alive for us.

Whatever we do, let us make preparations to be worthy to rejoice with the entire world to welcome the Risen Jesus in to our hearts on Easter Morning.

The Arena of the Unwell FILM REVIEW

It’s the end of an era for two substance abusing actors towards the end of the 1960s, in Bruce Robinson’s iconic British comedy, Withnail & I (1986).

Withnail & I is a perfect example of not needing a strong plot to have a great movie. Often in European cinema, character was the plot.

And what great characters we have here! The story follows two substance-abusing, unemployed actors in London in 1969 who retreat to the countryside for a holiday that proves disastrous.

Withnail and the eponymous ‘I’ (in the script he’s referred to as Marwood) are in a right stupor; out of work and wallowing in hangovers and boredom, as Marwood writes, referring to the

header. It has an infamous drinking game popular among students; take a drink every time our characters take a drink. And what an intake of alcohol that is. I never attempted it but I can promise it’s not advisable.

It’s expertly written, peppered throughout with the most iconic quotes. And while it’s visuals may not be the most cinematic, its look nails that nicotine stained, rain soaked squalor just perfectly.

It’s both a fish out of water and coming of age comedy. But

then the melancholy gradually creeps in; Robinson based the piece on his own experiences as a struggling actor in his 20s.

There was a real life Withnail who came to a rough end due to alcoholism. It’s a cautionary tale of squandering one’s talents, succumbing to substance abuse.

It’s driven by a need to change one’s situation and the fact that, ultimately, everything comes to end, good or bad, and how we deal with that fact.

But man alive is it funny.

Richard E. Grant gives the greatest drunken performance ever on screen. Period. But Paul McGann as ‘I’, Richard Griffith as Uncle Monty,and Ralph Brown as Danny the Dealer are absolutely fantastic as well. Check it out but maybe skip the drinking game!
