SCULLYS FEST... ONLINE Despite having to cancel the popular Scullys Fest live music and culture weekender due to Covid-19 restrictions, fans were not left disappointed after organisers moved the long-running event online.

More than 30 acts came together virtually to put on a tremendous show, ensuring

an unbroken record for the celebration of the traditional music and culture of Duhallow and Sliabh Luachra that has been running since 2004 to mark the regular Monday night sessions that began all the way back in 1974.

Solution to empty beds This year’s gardening season seems to be coming to a premature end. The plants are reacting to the cold temperatures and high rainfall by beginning to shut down and prepare for winter. It is disappointing after a glorious start to the season.

But it’s not all doom and gloom.

OK, so tomatoes are struggling to ripen, and growth of carrots is slow, but brassicas are flying, early potatoes should be harvested and garlic can be lifted, dried and stored.

Onions are swelling nicely, and hopefully will ripen without their stems rotting which can lead to problems with storage.

As vegetable crops are harvested, there is always the dilemma of what to do with the empty beds. August is too early to be putting the winter cover on and there is no point leaving it all to go to weeds.

There are crops that can be successfully planted out after garlic and early spuds, including leeks, beets, salads and French beans, although this requires a degree of forward planning, beans and leeks must be module sown earlier in the season. Beets and salads also do better sown in advance to be planted when the bed becomes free, but you can risk a cheeky direct sowing of these crops.

When putting in successional crops, don’t forget to keep an eye on your crop rotation.

Clovers make a good green manure An alternative solution is to sow a green manure. These are crops grown to improve soil during times when there would be no other plants in the ground. They are typically dug back into the soil before the following crop to allow it to benefit from the nutrients released. A wide range of plant species can be used with different ones providing different benefits such as: providing nutrients and organic matter for following crops, breaking up heavy soil and creating habitat for insects.

Clovers, vetches, field beans and lupins are all fertility building green manures due to their nitrogen fixing properties. These are great to use to replenish the soil after a hungry crop has been lifted. Ryegrass, buckwheat and phacelia are soil

improvers, which means their strong roots break up the soil increasing worm activity and drainage, and leaving a lovely workable tilth behind them.

As with all seeds, timing is of the essence. Particularly with winter green manures it is important to sow them early enough so that they can establish a good covering over the bed, this will reduce weed competition. August to September is an optimum time, which makes them perfect for following onions, garlic and potatoes.

Summer green manures can be used for beds that are not in use or resting and can be fantastic in bringing bees and pollinators to your garden.

Green manures are especially useful in urban gardens, where access might be difficult for bringing in bulk materials such as manure, and in no dig systems, where the strong root systems of the green manure plants open up the soil to aid aeration and drainage without the intricate structure of the soil being damaged. These are best incorporated into the soil by covering the crop and letting time and worms do the job.

Next season you will have rich friable aerated soil. Perfect for starting all over again!

A reminder to CARE

Mayor of the County of Cork Cllr Mary Linehan Foley has appealed to young people to help curb the spread of Covid-19 Mayor of the County of Cork Cllr Mary Linehan Foley has joined representatives from Cork County Comháirle na nÓg to issue a reminder of the importance of adhering to public health guidelines to suppress the spread of Covid-19 and protect one another.

Echoing Cork County Council’s CARE message, the Comháirle na nÓg group joined together to encourage other younger people to be aware of the needs and safety of older and more vulnerable people as our towns and villages reopen gradually. Developed as part of the Council’s Project ACT, an initiative to help activate the county’s towns during the Covid-19 crisis, the CARE guidelines were developed in collaboration with the Cork Older People’s Council to promote consideration for more vulnerable people during the crisis.

The guidelines ask people to observe the following points:

“I urge young people to adhere to the government guidelines in relation to social distancing, wear a face covering when required and avoid large gatherings to protect those close to you, as well as your wider community. We are in this together and we can overcome Covid 19 if we all do our part.” n

Our Afterschools is fully compliant with Covid guidelines and is operating in 'play pods' as per HSA advice. The service offers bus transfers from the two schools in Newmarket to our facility, a nutritious meal provided by Duhallow Community Food Services, one-to-one homework support and lots of fun, games, arts, baking etc. once homework is completed.

Kanturk RFC in bid for try relay record There is still time to sign up to support Kanturk RFC in the club’s bid for the longest try relay to raise funds for the club along with Mercy House Support Group and Kanturk Community Hospital.

The event takes place over Friday and Saturday August 21st and 22nd. Participants will walk or run the distance from Kanturk Rugby Football Club to the Aviva

Location: This scenic walk with truly amazing views is near the start of the Duhallow Way, in County Kerry. It goes through a stunning pass between the Paps mountains and Knocknabro mountain at the side of Caherbarnagh mountain, part of the Derrynasagart mountain range.

For those who may not know, the Paps were named after the breasts of Danu, the Celtic Goddess of fertility and these mountains are

iconic of this part of Duhallow. The track is relatively straight, going past the beautiful Shrone Lake, before climbing up to go into the Clydagh Valley on the southerly side of the Derrynasaggarts. The track then descends until it meets with the turning point at the road below. Some more energetic walkers may wish to explore the forested Clydagh Valley at this point.

Alternative walk: Besides the opportunity to explore the roads of the Clydagh Valley, some people opt to walk up from Shrone Church, enjoying the quiet single track roads and stunning views en route. This option would add 7.1km to the walk (coloured orange on map).

Walk class: It is a moderate walk of two descents and one climb on the outward journey and two climbs and one descent on the return.

Duration/length: An hour’s duration, 6.3km (coloured yellow on map) Footwear: It is a track throughout and sturdy footwear is sufficient.

Directions: Take the N72 out of Old Rathmore, passing Reens Peugeot garage on the right, take the next left for Shrone (2km). Continue until you reach a T-junction (3.3km). Turn left and pass the church, take the first right (1.45km). Follow this road until you reach a gate across the road (2.3km), there is parking on the other side of the gate. The surface of this road deteriorates the last half a kilometre, before you reach the gate.

Originally a place of pagan beliefs, it has for centuries been one of faith, traditional music and dancing. It is now a place of pilgrimage on Lá Bealtaine, or May Day, when people walk around the fort and take the water from the well. The fort’s name came from one of a triad of pagan

KEEPING SOIL HEALTHY Abundant plant growth requires a soil environment that is free from inhibiting factors such as toxic substances, impenetrable layers and extremes in temperature and acidity.

The soil provides the essential nutrients required for human, animal and plant nutrition. With an increase in crop production due to consumer demand, deficiencies in soil nutrient content and soil organic matter is of primary concern. However, organic fertilisers and lime can address these issues while providing an economic advantage to the farmer.

The addition of organic manures can have both beneficial and detrimental impacts on soil properties such as essential element content, organic matter percent and soil pH. Over application, time of application and non-adherence to prescribed buffer zones from water bodies can have extremely detrimental impacts on natural ecosystems.

Soil fertility is described as the ability of the soil to maximise plant productivity within economic constraints. There is at present a decline in natural soil fertility affecting global soil degradation, due mainly to two primary factors, overgrazing and deforestation.

Nutrient movement through ecosystems is a natural process, but these movements are increased on land used for agricultural purposes.

Nutrients essential for soil fertility are lost from agricultural systems through product removal (grazing and cropping), losses to non-labile soil pools, nutrient leaching, and losses through forms of erosion.

Excessive soil tillage on agricultural land also results in a more rapid degradation of organic material and increased soil erosion. The rapid decline in soil fertility is correlated with the increased demand for food due to expanding populations.

Nutrients derived from soil play a significant role in terms of human, livestock and plant functionality.

Humans as part of a balanced diet must consume large amounts of

Milk and dairy products enriched with nutrients can address common dietary deficiencies in humans.

Nutrients also have the potential to increase milk yield thus resulting in an economical advantage for the farmer. The dietary nutrient requirements of grazing livestock can be addressed by access to fresh and conserved forages, concentrates, supplements, water troughs and salt licks. A successful nutrient balance in the diet of livestock can benefit animal, farmer and consumer.

Industry and agriculture are stated as the primary sources for pollution of the environment with toxic metals, although a proportion originates from natural geological sources.

Intensive plant production systems have led to an increase in crop yield resulting in a depletion of nutrients in the soil. Evidence suggests that foods grown on soils lacking in essential nutrients may provide insufficient human and animal

The economic viability of chemical fertiliser use in agriculture is questionable, therefore the adequate utilisation of organic manures and a liming programme presents a more viable option for farmers and promotes the natural fertility process in soils. Organic wastes applied to agricultural land principally as livestock manures in combination with a liming programme has been traditionally used for maintaining soil fertility in terms of nutrient status and organic matter levels. As intensification has increased there is a greater demand and requirement for organic manures in the form of slurries.

The soil is a complex structure in which the balancing of its components, specifically water, organic matter and mineral content is essential in maintaining soil fertility. If an imbalance occurs in one or more of these components, plant uptake and subsequently animal health can be adversely affected. Maintaining soil fertility, primarily with organic substances is important in promoting trace element concentrations within the soil.

Interests In ‘olden times’, many young girls realistically had only two expectations in life. They could marry and move into a home of their own or remain a spinster and stay with their parents, looking after the family home. For most, education was very basic and employment prospects were limited, to say the least.

Not surprisingly, finding a husband was a high priority and marriage divination was a device widely used to discover some little snippet of information about the prey. A girl could perhaps hope to discover the colour of her lover’s hair, the sound of his voice or perhaps the direction in which he lived.

Finding the ring in the barm brack at Hallowe’en was a sure sign of wedding bells before the twelve months were out; putting a piece of wedding cake under your pillow to dream of your future husband was a common practice, or eating a salted herring at bedtime provided a similar result. The leaf of an ash tree was even used as a matrimonial oracle. The girl plucks an even leaf

Does anyone believe in marriage divination/prediction today? Does this ageold custom/superstition still survive in the rational and pragmatic 21st century? In these days of equal opportunity and gender equality, if it is

practiced at all, it is just for fun and entertainment, but, at one time, it was serious business.

Shelling peas for dinner the other night I remembered another one: If a young girl finds nine peas in a pod the next single male she meets will be her future husband, or, at least, have the same initials. It depends on the strain of peas, but the average seems to be six or seven peas to the pod. Nine-pea pods are not all that unusual though, and, if it were not for the two terrible ‘isms’, sexism and ageism, I might be Sultan of a handy harem before the year is out.

A word of warning to any young lady contemplating a raid on my garden in search of a nine-pea pod, the first single male you are likely to meet is a very disgruntled and grumpy old gardener.

Hedgerow recipes: Wood sorrel Wood sorrel (seamsóg) has bright green tri-foiled leaves with white flowers that have a purple vein through them. It has a sour taste reminiscent of lemons. It is high in vitamin C and is very refreshing on hot days, sometimes called ‘Thirst Quencher’. The leaves, flowers, seed pods and roots are all edible either raw or cooked. It can be eaten as is, added to soups, made in a sauce or used as a seasoning and compliments fish very well.

WARNING: Wood sorrel should NOT be consumed by people with kidney disease, kidney stones, rheumatoid arthritis or gout as it has high oxalic acid levels. Excess consumption can cause calcium to leech out of the bones. It also has a laxative effect if consumed in excess. Also, when cooking wood sorrel you must NOT use non-stick saucepans as the plant chemicals react with the coating.

SORREL TARTLETS Ingredients Sweet shortcrust pastry (enough to line 12 tartlet tins) n 150g sorrel leaves (shredded) n 120g caster sugar n 1 tbsp cornflour n

Method First prepare your pastry by rolling it out, and using a pastry cutter to cut the circles with which to line the tartlet tins. To a pan add the shredded sorrel leaves along with the caster sugar and 60ml water.

Bring to a simmer, cover and cook, stirring occasionally, until the sorrel leaves wilt down and you end up with a soft green mass (about 20 minutes). Mix the cornflour with 2 tbsp water and add this to the

sorrel mixture. Mix well until it is combined and cook for 5 more minutes. Allow the sorrel mix to cool, then spoon into the tartlets, filling about ¾ of the way. Place in an oven pre-heated to 180°C and bake for approximately 20 minutes until the pastry is a pale golden colour. Allow to cool then remove from the tins and serve. These are best served warm.

This week we’re going to chat about the sticky subject of pet insurance.

However you choose to provide for your pet’s medical care is a very personal decision. In taking on the joy and companionship of having a four legged friend in the household, you have also taken on the responsibility of making sure that the care they need should they become ill or injured is provided for.

This is the stuff we don’t like to think about until it happens, but trust me, the last thing you want to have bothering you if your pet is ill is the financial aspect.

Let me tackle the elephant in the room first – vets are not in it for the money. Believe me, if I was in this for the money, I made a very, very wrong career move when filling out my CAO application years ago. I, like most other vets, are in this as a vocation. We care about preventing pain and suffering, and healing animals – it’d be a lot more convenient for us it we didn’t have to think about the finances at all!

But there is no escaping it – like any business, vets have overheads.

Except with a medical business, the overheads are huge. Simply keeping a veterinary hospital staffed with excellent vets, nurses and customer care staff, fully insured and registered, stocked with all

Pet insurance may save the day in the event of costly emergency procedures of the necessary medicines and equipment required and having arrangements in place to offer 24 hour emergency care means that about 70-80% of every veterinary bill is swallowed up in costs to keep the veterinary care afloat in the first place.

So, when it comes to having a discussion about costs of pet healthcare, please think before you complain and guilt your vet about how expensive it sounds. It is that expensive because we will be the ones there carefully taking care of your pet at 4am when an accident has happened, with all of the medicines, state-of-the-art equipment and expertise it needs to give it the best chance of making it through.

So when your pet does become ill, what is your plan? Veterinary bills for serious illness or accidents can run into the thousands when gold standard care is provided.

Some people find that adding to a little ‘rainy day’ pet fund on a regular basis works well for them. I prefer pet insurance, as for a small monthly payment I have access to far more money for veterinary care

than I could ever manage to put away in a pet fund – its simply more cost effective.

A few tips on pet insurance: n Insure your pet early in life if you can, but older pets can still benefit greatly from insurance; n Get a policy that covers your pet for a lifetime. Ask the insurance provider this question: ‘If my pet gets a chronic illness like diabetes, will your insurance continue to pay for the insulin (medication) it needs until the end of its life?’. If they say yes, you’re on to a winner. If they say no, run a mile; n The cheapest insurance is rarely the best – you get what you pay for; n Remember that insurance is for unexpected illness. It usually does not cover the routine preventative care required for every pet, i.e. vaccinations, flea and worm treatment, and most dental work as this was a known cost when you took on the pet.

At the end of the day, it offers peace of mind. Hopefully the worst will never happen, but if it does, you wont have to worry about the finances and can focus on your pet instead.

Part 1 of 3 Improve your balance

Get Ready

1. Posture Perfect Start with your feet slightly apart, toes facing forward, knees soft (slightly bent). Raise your shoulders, roll them back and drop them down - arms by your side.

2. East / West Shift Lift your right leg and turn your hip so that your right foot points out to the right (East). Step out to East (bending your knee as you take the weight). Push back again so that you are standing with your feet almost together. Repeat 5 times and then repeat to the left (West) with your left foot.

3. North / South Shift Take a long step forward with either foot. Make sure your toes are out further than your knee.

Slowly shift your body forward (North) onto the foot in front, (bending your knee slightly to take the weight) until there is no weight on your back foot. Slowly move your weight backwards (South) onto your back foot, (bending the knee slightly to take the weight) until there is no weight on the front foot.

Repeat 5 times and then repeat with the other foot in front.

Step one foot out and return at random to different clock positions from 9 o’clock to 12 o’clock using your left foot and 12 o’clock to 3 o’clock using your right foot.

Remember to: • turn your hip so that the foot points at the time, • shift your weight out to the position and bend your knee to take the weight

Step at random to different o’clocks 12 to15 times.

Take a breather. Repeat this 3 times, taking a breather between sessions.

5. Tightrope Walking Slowly step forward and place your heel-to-toe (as if you are on a tightrope). Slowly shift your weight forward onto the front foot, before slowly moving your back foot forward and placing it heel-to-toe.

Repeat for 10 to12 steps - saying ‘move’, ‘place’ and ‘shift’.

Then try stepping backwards (slowly and carefully), each time placing the foot toe-to-heel.

Duhallow Sports Greats Q & A 1. What/who inspired you to become a sportsperson in your field?

My dad encouraged my sisters and I to play and I just seemed to have a talent for it so it spurred me on. I really enjoyed going on trips with my dad and playing rounds of golf with him.

2. What was the moment that you knew you were on the right track?

When I was selected to represent Munster at the Interprovincials. I enjoyed that few days so much I knew golf was what I loved. I was really shy growing up so playing with other girls my age and having something in common helped me enjoy it even more.

3. What is your greatest strength?

My work ethic is my greatest strength, I wouldn’t be where I am without putting in the work.

4. What is your greatest sporting achievement?

Individually my greatest sporting achievement is probably winning the Irish Girls Close Championship. As a team, winning the Girls Home internationals for the first time in history.

5. What is your greatest personal achievement?

I would say making the move to college in America. I was quite a shy and reserved person so moving half way across the world was a big deal for me as it would be for anyone, but it has also been the best decision I ever made.

6. What was the greatest challenge you faced in your career and how did you overcome it?

I struggled with a wrist injury my first and second year of college, which was tough as I couldn’t prepare the way I would like to usually for tournaments as I had to rest up as much as I could in between tournaments. As a result

it was tough on me mentally, so I did a lot of work with my physical therapist and worked really hard to be able to play injury free and I’m glad to say that it has improved immensely.

7. Who supported you the most in your career?

I have been lucky enough to have a lot of support from everyone at Kanturk Golf Club and at Killarney Golf and Fishing Club. My family have been so supportive as well. They support me in everything I do whether that be virtually when I’m in America or driving me around the country when I’m at home. I really do appreciate everyone’s support and it means a lot that I can play my sport with people behind me. I also receive a lot of support from my coach Mark Heinnemann and my Physio Therapist Ailish Mulcahy.

8. What advice would you give to young players just starting out?

I would say enjoy it as much as you can. Golf can be a really difficult game at the best of times and it’s always the people who persevere and work hard who will come out on top.

Mairead Martin, 20, from Kanturk has been playing golf since she was 11 and started representing Ireland at the age of 14. She earned a scholarship to the University of Louisville, Kentucky where she is going into her 3rd year, majoring in Sports Administration and minoring in Communications. Her best result in college so far is finishing runner up in the Cardinal Cup which is a tournament held at the University of Louisville Golf Club. She has represented Ireland at Junior and Women’s level. She represented Great Britain and Ireland at the Junior Vagliano aged 15 and was Irish Girls Close Champion in 2017, where she won in Mallow Golf Club with a lot of support from home. She is also the 2 x Leinster Women’s Champion, winning this for the first time aged 15. She is an Honorary Life member of Kanturk Golf Club and Killarney Golf and Fishing Club.

She holds the course record at Killarney Golf and Fishing Club with a score of 11 under par. She also won the Best Female Cork Youths Sports Person of the Year for 2017.

9. What do you do outside of sports?

I like spending time with my family, which usually consists of going to hurling, football or basketball matches and going on bike rides. I play the concertina too.

10. What are your goals going forward?

To turn professional and play on the LPGA Tour, graduate from college and win a college tournament as an individual.
